Adsorption Capacity of a Volcanic Rock—Used in ConstructedWetlands—For Carbamazepine Removal, and Its Modification with Biofilm Growth

Treatment of tequila vinasse mixed with domestic wastewater in two types of constructed wetlands

Tequila vinasse (TV) is a high-strength effluent generated during the production of tequila, with a chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration of up to 74 g/L. In this study, the treatment of TV was evaluated in a 27-week study in two types of constructed wetlands (CWs), namely horizontal subsurface flow wetlands (HSSFWs) and vertical upflow wetlands (VUFWs). The pre-settled and neutralized TV was diluted at 10, 20, 30, and 40% with domestic wastewater (DWW). Volcanic rock (tezontle) was used as the substrate and Arundo donax and Iris sibirica as emergent vegetation. The two systems showed similar high removal efficiencies for COD, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD₅), turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS), true colour (TC), electrical conductivity (EC), and total nitrogen (TN). The highest average percentages of removal were obtained at 40% of dilution: 95.4 and 95.8% for COD, 98.1 and 98.2% for turbidity, 91.8 and 95.9% for TSS, and 86.5 and 86.4% for TC in the HSSFWs and the VUFWs, respectively. This study demonstrates the potential of CWs for TV treatment as a major step in a treatment system.

Volcanic rock powder residues as precursors for the synthesis of adsorbents and potential application in the removal of dyes and metals from water

The present study verified the potential of volcanic rock powder residues originating from the extraction of semi-precious rocks in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, as precursors or adsorbents for dyes and metallic ion removal from water. In this way, it is possible to add value and give an adequate destination to this waste. Volcanic rock powder residues from Ametista do Sul (AME) and Nova Prata (NP) were the starting materials. These were used naturally or submitted to the alkaline activation process at 60 °C and alkaline fusion at 550 °C. The analysis of the starting samples by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) revealed that they are mainly composed of aluminum, calcium, iron, and silicon oxides, which corroborates the presence of numerous crystalline phases observed in the X-ray diffraction spectra (XRD). Moreover, by XRD analysis of the synthesized samples, alkaline fusion proved to be more efficient in the dissolution of crystalline phases and consequently in the formation of the amorphous phase (more reactive). Furthermore, the adsorption tests with acid green and acid red dyes and Ag⁺, Co²⁺, and Cu²⁺ ions indicated the viability of using residual volcanic rock powder as raw material for the production of adsorbents functionalized with sodium hydroxide, being that the samples synthesized by alkaline fusion showed better results of removal and adsorption capacity for all the contaminants used in the study.

Plant Biomass Production in Constructed Wetlands Treating Swine Wastewater in Tropical Climates

The production of both aboveground and belowground plant biomass in constructed wetlands (CW) is a poorly understood topic, although vegetation plays an important role in the process of pollutant removal from wastewater. The objective of this study was to evaluate the aboveground and belowground biomass production of Typha latifolia and Canna hybrids in a large-scale constructed wetland treating swine wastewater in tropical climates. Parameters, such as temperature, DO, pH, COD, TSS, TN, TP, and TC, as well as destructive and non-destructive biomass, were evaluated. It was found that, despite the high concentrations of pollutants, the vegetation adapted easily and also grew healthily despite being exposed to high concentrations of pollutants from swine water. Although Typha latifolia (426 plants) produced fewer plants than Canna hybrids (582 plants), the higher biomass of the Typha latifolia species was slightly higher than that of Canna hybrids by 5%. On the other hand, the proximity of the water inlet to the system decreased the capacity for the development of a greater number of seedlings. As for the elimination of pollutants, after treatment in the constructed wetland, COD: 83.6 ± 16.9%; TSS: 82.2 ± 17.7%; TN: 94.4 ± 15.8%; TP: 82.4 ± 23.2%; and TC: 94.4 ± 4.4% were significantly reduced. These results show that wetlands constructed as tertiary systems for the treatment of swine wastewater produce a large amount of plant biomass that significantly helps to reduce the concentrations of pollutants present in this type of water in tropical areas. The use of these plants is recommended in future wetland designs to treat swine wastewater.

Constructed Wetlands in Latin America and the Caribbean: A Review of Experiences during the Last Decade

The review aims to report the state-of-the-art constructed wetlands (CW) in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region not limited to national and local conditions. The aim is with a broader view, to bring updated and sufficient information, to facilitate the use of the CW technology in the different countries of LAC. Thus, 520 experiences extracted from the 169 reviewed documents in 20 countries were analyzed. According to the data, horizontal subsurface flow wetlands are the most reported CW in the region (62%), the second most common CW technology in the region is free water surface CW (17%), then vertical flow systems (9%), followed by intensified constructed wetlands (8%), and finally French systems (4%). The performance for nutrient removal is analyzed, finding that the mean of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Nitrogen (TN), and Total Phosphorous (TP) removal efficiencies varies from 65% to 83%, 55% to 72%, and 30% to 84%, respectively. The results suggest a generally good performance for COD and TN removal, but a low performance for TP removal. Regarding plant species used for CWs, 114 different plant species were reported, being until now the most extensive report about plant species used in CWs in the LAC region.

Removing Organic Matter and Nutrients from Pig Farm Wastewater with a Constructed Wetland System

Pollutants from pig farms in Mexico have caused problems in many surface water reservoirs. Growing concern has driven the search for low-cost wastewater treatment solutions. The objective of this research was to evaluate the potential of an in-series constructed wetland to remove nutrients from wastewater from a pig farm. The wetland system had a horizontal flow that consisted of three cells, the first a surface water wetland, the second a sedimentation cell, and the third a subsurface flow wetland. The vegetation used was Thypa sp. and Scirpus sp. A mix of soil with red volcanic rock (10–30 mm diameter) and yellow sand (2–8 mm diameter) was used as a substrate for the vegetation. The experiments were carried out in duplicate. Water samples were collected at the inflow and outflow of the cells. Two hydraulic retention times (HRT) (5 and 10 days) and three treatments were evaluated: 400, 800, and 1200 mg·L⁻¹ of chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration. Data was collected in situ for temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), electrical conductivity (EC), and total dissolved solids (TDS). COD, total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), ammonia nitrogen (NH₃–N), and total phosphorous (TP) were analyzed in the laboratory. The results showed that the in-series constructed wetland is a feasible system for nutrient pollutant removal, with COD removal efficiency of 76% and 80% mg·L⁻¹ for a 5- and 10-day HRT, respectively. The removal efficiency for TKN, NH₃–N, and TP reached about 70% with a 5-day HRT, while a removal of 85% was obtained with a 10-day HRT. The wetland reached the maximum removal efficiency with a 10-day HRT and an inflow load of 400 mg·L⁻¹ of organic matter. The results indicate that HRT positively affects removal efficiency of COD and TDS. On the other hand, the HRT was not the determining factor for TP removal. Treatment one, with an initial COD concentration of 400 mg·L⁻¹, had the highest removal of the assessed pollutants, allowing for the use of water for irrigation according to Mexican regulatory standards (NOM-001). The water quality resulting from treatments two and three (T2 = 800 mg·L⁻¹ of COD and T3 = 1200 mg·L⁻¹ of COD) did not comply with minimal requirements for irrigation water.
