Characteristics of Nitrate Removal from Aqueous Solution by Modified Steel Slag

Nitrate and ammonium removal in constructed wetlands: Experimental insights and zero-dimensional numerical modeling

Constructed wetlands (CWs) have emerged as effective wastewater treatment systems, mimicked natural wetland processes but engineered for enhanced pollutant removal efficiency. Ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3-) are among common pollutants in wastewater, posing significant environmental and health risks. The primary objective of this study is to compares the performance of CWs using gravel and three sizes of natural pumice, along with phragmites australis, in horizontal and horizontal-vertical CWs for nitrate and ammonium removal in the complementary treatment of domestic wastewater. Additionally, the study aims to develop and validate a numerical model using MATLAB software to predict the removal efficiency of these pollutants, thereby contributing to the optimization of CW design and operation. The model operates as a zero-dimensional model based on the law of mass conservation, treating the wetland as a completely mixed reactor, thus avoiding complexities associated with solute movement in porous media. It accurately could predict removal efficiency of chemical, biochemical, and biological indicators while considering active and passive absorption mechanisms by plant uptake. Notably, the determination of coefficients in the model equation does not rely on potentially error-prone laboratory measurements due to sampling issues. Instead, optimization techniques alongside field data robustly estimate these coefficients, ensuring reliability and practicality. Results indicate that higher pollutant concentrations increase reaction rates, particularly enhancing CW efficiency in ammonium removal. Pumice, especially in larger sizes, exhibits superior absorption due to increased porosity and surface area. Overall, the model accurately predicts nitrates concentrations, demonstrating its potential for CW performance optimization and confirming the significance of effective pollutant removal strategies in wastewater treatment.

Utilization of ferrous slags as coagulants, filters, adsorbents, neutralizers/stabilizers, catalysts, additives, and bed materials for water and wastewater treatment: A review

Solid waste is currently produced in substantial amounts by industrial activities. While some are recycled, the majority of them are dumped in landfills. Iron and steel production leaves behind ferrous slag, which must be created organically, managed wisely and scientifically if the sector is to remain more sustainably maintained. Ferrous slag is the term for the solid waste that is produced when raw iron is smelted in ironworks and during the production of steel. Both its specific surface area and porosity are relatively high. Since these industrial waste materials are so easily accessible and offer such serious disposal challenges, the idea of their reuse in water and wastewater treatment systems is an appealing alternative. There are many components such as Fe, Na, Ca, Mg, and silicon found in ferrous slags, which make it an ideal substance for wastewater treatment. This research investigates the potential of ferrous slag as coagulants, filters, adsorbents, neutralizers/stabilizers, supplementary filler material in soil aquifers, and engineered wetland bed media to remove contaminants from water and wastewater. Ferrous slag may provide a substantial environmental risk before or after reuse, so leaching and eco-toxicological investigations are necessary. Some study revealed that the amount of heavy metal ions leached from ferrous slag conforms to industrial norms and is exceedingly safe, hence it may be employed as a new type of inexpensive material to remove contaminants from wastewater. The practical relevance and significance of these aspects are attempted to be analyzed, taking into account all recent advancements in the fields, in order to help in the development of informed decisions about future directions for research and development related to the utilization of ferrous slags for wastewater treatment.

Competitive adsorption of nitrate, phosphate, and sulfate on amine-modified wheat straw: In-situ infrared spectroscopic and density functional theory study

Amine-modified wheat straw (AMWS) has already been reported as a promising adsorbent for nitrate (NO₃) removal due to its cost-effectiveness and high efficiency. However, the NO₃ removal mechanism has not been well understood, especially in the presence of co-existing ions. Here, the effect of co-existing anions on NO₃ removal by AMWS was investigated and the underlying mechanisms were revealed using a combination of in-situ infrared (IR) spectroscopy and computational modeling. The in-situ IR results indicated that NO₃, sulfate (SO₄), and phosphate (PO₄) are all adsorbed as outer-sphere complexes on AMWS. The two-dimensional-correlation spectroscopy analysis implied the adsorption sequence of SO₄ > PO₄ > NO₃. The adsorption energies obtained from density functional theory calculation range from -0.24 to 0.51 eV (-23.2 to 49.2 kJ/mol), confirming that these anions adsorb on AMWS as outer-sphere complexes. For the first time, this study provides direct spectroscopic evidence of the outer-sphere adsorption of NO₃ on AMWS, as well as identifies the adsorption sequence, confirmed by computational modeling. The competitive mechanism of NO_3, SO₄, and PO₄ revealed in this study is helpful to understand and predict the applications of AMWS.

Nitrate contamination in water resources, human health risks and its remediation through adsorption: a focused review

The level of nitrate in water has been increasing considerably all around the world due to vast application of inorganic nitrogen fertiliser and animal manure. Because of nitrate's high solubility in water, human beings are getting exposed to it mainly through various routes including water, food etc. Various regulations have been set for nitrate (45-50 mgNO₃^-/L) in drinking water to protect health of the infants from the methemoglobinemia, birth defects, thyroid disease, risk of specific cancers, i.e. colorectal, breast and bladder cancer caused due to nitrate poisoning. Different methods like ion exchange, adsorption, biological denitrification etc. have the ability to eliminate the nitrate from the aqueous medium. However, adsorption process got preference over the other approaches because of its simple design and satisfactory results especially with surface modified adsorbents or with mineral-based adsorbents. Different types of adsorbents have been used for this purpose; however, adsorbents derived from the biomass wastes have great adsorption capacities for nitrate such as tea waste-based adsorbents (136.43 mg/g), carbon nanotube (142.86 mg/g), chitosan beads (104 mg/g) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide modified rice husk (278 mg/g). Therefore, a thorough literature survey has been carried out to formulate this review paper to understand various sources of nitrate pollution, route of exposure to the human beings, ill effects along with discussing the key developments as well as the new advancements reported in procuring low-cost efficient adsorbents for water purification.

Removal of p-Nitrophenol from simulated sewage using steel slag: Capability and mechanism

The steel slag was investigated for the removal of p-nitrophenol (4-NP) from simulated sewage by batch adsorption and fixed-bed column absorption experiments. The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity was 109.66 mg/g at 298 K, pH of 7, initial concentration 100 mg/L, and dose 0.8 g/L. The adsorption process fitted the Langmuir isothermal adsorption model and followed pseudo-second-order kinetic models, the activation energy of adsorption (Ea) was 10.78 kJ/mol, which indicated that the adsorption was single-molecule layer physical adsorption. The regeneration efficiency was still maintained at 84.20% after five adsorption-desorption cycles. The column adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption capacity of the Thomas model reached 13.69 mg/g and the semi-penetrating time of the Yoon-Nelson model was 205 min at 298 K. Fe₃O₄ was identified as the main adsorption site by adsorption energy calculation, XRD and XPS analysis. The FT-IR, Zeta potential, and ionic strength analysis indicated that the adsorption mechanism was hydrogen bonding interaction and electrostatic interaction. This work proved that steel slag could be utilized as a potential adsorbent for phenol-containing wastewater treatment.

Abstract: Description of Pistacia leaves powder using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), specific surface area according to nitrogen adsorption (SBET) and methylene Blue (MB), and point of zero charge determination (pHpzc). A series of batch adsorption tests were conducted to study effect of various factors (plant powders dose, contact time, temperature, pH) on the percentage of nitrate and phosphate removal from domestic wastewater. The adsorption kinetics, regeneration ability test of plant powder, and phytotoxicity tests for treated water and spent powder on germination were studied. Results of SBET analysis showed that Pistacia leaves powders have a low surface area and microscopic pores, SEM images revealed rough surfaces with uneven cavities, EDX analysis showed that there are high percentages of carbon and oxygen, good percentages for nitrogen, and few percentages of potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, sulfur and chlorine, and FTIR analysis showed that there are more than five distinct absorption peaks. The maximum value of nitrate and phosphate removal was 76.47% and 52.20%, respectively, at powder dose of 2 g/L, temperature 25 °C, and pH 5, and the percentage of nitrate and phosphate removal increased with increasing contact time until equilibrium was reached after 120 min for nitrate and 180 min for phosphate, and It was found that adsorption of ions follows kinetics of reaction from pseudo-second-order model, and powders can be Regeneration and used for two successive cycles with a slight decrease in removal efficiency. Germination tests on Lepidium sativum indicate no phytotoxicity. That is, Pistacia leaves powder is one of the natural products that are effective in removing nitrate and phosphate from domestic wastewater.

Adsorption Behavior of Lead Ions from Wastewater on Pristine and Aminopropyl-Modified Blast Furnace Slag

The potential possibility of blast furnace slag as a low-cost adsorbent to remove lead ions from wastewater was investigated in detail in the present work. Both single factor experiment and orthogonal experiment were performed to reveal the effect of pH, adsorption temperature, contact time and initial concentration of lead ions on the adsorption performance of pristine slag. In order to make clear the correlation between the lead ion adsorption performance and the structure of slag, solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was conducted to reveal the network structure and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) was used to calculate the nonbridging oxygen in the network-forming tetrahedra. For the purpose of improving the adsorption performance, γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was adopted to modify the slag via post-grafting method. The results show that the slag is predominately composed of SiO2, Al2O3, CaO and MgO, exhibiting an amorphous network structure based on SiO4 and AlO4 tetrahedra. The conditions for adsorption can be optimized as follows: a pH of 7, an adsorption temperature of 60 °C, a contact time of 120 min and an initial lead ion concentration of 40 mg·L−1. Under the optimal conditions, a removal rate of 99.98% and an adsorption capacity of 49.99 mg·g−1 are obtained for the pristine slag. The adsorption complies with the Langmuir model thermodynamically and conforms to the pseudo-second order model kinetically. It is noted that aminopropyl-modification has considerably enhanced the removal rate of lead ions from 20.71 to 64.32% and the adsorption capacity from 29.01 to 96.48 mg·g−1 since amino groups (-NH2) are more inclined to form a complex with lead ions than hydroxyl groups due to the higher nucleophilicity of amino groups than that of hydroxyl groups. However, it is necessary to develop more low-cost modification agents in the future work.

Immobilization persistence of Cu, Cr, Pb, Zn ions by the addition of steel slag in acidic contaminated mine soil

Adding steel slag to the acidic contaminated mine soil can immobilize heavy metal ions, but immobilization persistence of the metal ions needs to be determined. In this study, dynamic column simulation experiments were set up to compare the immobilization persistence of Cu, Cr, Pb and Zn ions in original soil and with the addition of slag, lime or fly ash to the soil during a simulated 36-month of acid rain leaching. After adding slag and lime, the pH, organic matter content and cation exchange capacity of soil were significantly increased. Compared with the original soil, additions of slag and lime to the soil were able to persistently immobilize the metal ions, whereas fly ash additions had little effect. During simulation, the metal ion concentrations in the slag group leaching solution were essentially consistent with Standard IV for groundwater. The metal ions were immobilized to form instable hydroxides and stable fractions following adding slag to soil. The hydroxide could rerelease metal ions by acid rain leaching, part of which were re-immobilized into stable fractions by entering slag lattice and complexing with soil organic matter. Therefore, adding slag to soil can persistently immobilize metal ions for heavy metal-contaminated acidic mine soil.

Ironmaking and Steelmaking Slags as Sustainable Adsorbents for Industrial Effluents and Wastewater Treatment: A Critical Review of Properties, Performance, Challenges and Opportunities

This paper critically discusses the structure, properties and applications of ironmaking and steelmaking slags and their silicate-based variants as low-cost adsorbents for removing cations and anions from industrial effluents and wastewater. Undoubtedly, the performance of slag-based adsorbents depends on their physical, chemical and phase chemical properties. The presence of crystalline phases, for example, has a significant effect on the adsorption capacity. However, despite their low cost and ubiquity, their chemical and geometric heterogeneity significantly affects the performance and applications of slag-based adsorbents. These challenges notwithstanding, the efficacy of slag-based adsorbents can be significantly enhanced through purposeful activation to increase the specific surface area and density of adsorption sites on the surfaces of adsorbent particles. The synthesis of functionalised adsorbents such as geopolymers, zeolites and layered double hydroxides from silicate and aluminosilicate precursors can also significantly increase the performance of slag-based adsorbents. In addition, the ability to stabilise the dissolved and/or entrained toxic metal species in stable phases in slags, either through controlled post-process fluxing or crystallisation, can significantly enhance the environmental performance of slag-based adsorbents. Most critical in the design of future slag-based adsorbents is the integration of the engineered properties of molten and solidified slags to the recovery and stabilisation of dissolved and/or entrained metals.

Effect of Fly Ash on the Properties of Ceramics Prepared from Steel Slag

In this study, SiO2–Al2O3–CaO–MgO steel slag ceramics containing 5 wt % MgO were used for the preparation of ceramic bodies, with the replacement of 5–20 wt % quartz and feldspar by fly ash. The effect of the addition of fly ash on the sintering shrinkage, water absorption, sintering range, and flexural strength of the steel slag ceramic was studied. Furthermore, the crystalline phase transitions and microstructures of the sintered samples were investigated by XRD, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and SEM. The results showed that the addition of fly ash affected the crystalline phases of the sintered ceramic samples. The main crystal phases of the base steel slag ceramic sample without fly ash were quartz, diopside, and augite. With increasing fly ash content, the quartz diffraction peak decreased gradually, while the diffraction peak intensity of anorthite became stronger. The mechanical properties of the samples decreased with the increasing amount of fly ash. The addition of fly ash (0–20 wt %) affected the optimum sintering temperature (1130–1160 °C) and widened the sintering range. The maximum addition amount of fly ash should be 15 wt %, for which the optimum sintering temperature was 1145 °C, water absorption was 0.03%, and flexural strength was 43.37 MPa higher than the Chinese national standard GBT 4100-2015 requirements.
