Functional Charge Transfer Plasmon Metadevices

Uncovering the Evolution of Low-Energy Plasmons in Nanopatterned Aluminum Plasmonics on Graphene

We report adjusting the charge-transfer-plasmon (CTP) resonances of aluminum (Al) bowties on suspended monolayer graphene via controlled nanofabrication and focused electron-beam irradiation. CTP resonances of bowties with a conductive junction blue-shift with an increase in junction width, whereas their 3λ/2 and λ resonances barely red-shift. These plasmon modes are derived and confirmed by an LC circuit model and electromagnetic simulations performed with boundary-element and frequency-domain methods. A monotonic decay of the CTP lifetime is observed, while the junction width is extended. Instead, the lifetimes of 3λ/2 and λ resonances are nearly independent of junction width. When the junction is shrunk by electron-beam irradiation, all antenna resonances red-shift. Having created an electron-beam-induced sub 5 nm gap in bowties, we monitor the unambiguous transition of a CTP into a bonding-type gap mode, which is highly sensitive to the separation distance. Meanwhile, the 3λ/2 and λ resonances evolve into dipolar bright and dipolar dark modes.

Probing Charge Transport Kinetics in a Plasmonic Environment with Cyclic Voltammetry

Possible modifications in electrochemical reaction kinetics are explored in a nanostructured plasmonic environment with and without additional light illumination using a cyclic voltammetry (CV) method. In nanostructured gold, the effect of light on anodic and cathodic currents is much pronounced than that in a flat system. The electron-transfer rate shows a 3-fold increase under photoexcitation. The findings indicate a possibility of using plasmonic excitations for controlling electrochemical reactions.

Electron-Beam-Induced Molecular Plasmon Excitation and Energy Transfer in Silver Molecular Nanowires

We investigate (1) electron-beam-induced plasmon absorption spectra of Ag molecular nanowire dimers and (2) electron-beam-induced energy transfer between two nanowires. We employ linear-response time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) and real-time TDDFT methods to simulate the electron-beam-induced plasmonic excitations, dynamics, and corresponding electron energy loss spectrum for small models of a single molecular nanowire with four Ag atoms and for two Ag nanowires. An array of different relative orientations of nanowires and of different initial excitation conditions resulting from applying an electron beam at different positions with respect to the Ag nanowires is investigated. The results demonstrate (1) an electron beam can induce plasmonic excitations from the molecular Ag nanowire ground state to the excited states that are both optically allowed and forbidden, (2) a tunability for selective excitations that can be controlled by the position of a focused electron beam, and (3) kinetic and dynamic behaviors of time-dependent electron-beam-induced energy transfer between two Ag molecular nanowires depend on the position of the beam source and nanowire separation distance, providing insights into the spatial dependences of plasmonic couplings in nanowire arrays.

A Low-Threshold Miniaturized Plasmonic Nanowire Laser with High-Reflectivity Metal Mirrors

A reflectivity-enhanced hybrid plasmonic GaAs/AlGaAs core-shell nanowire laser is proposed and studied by 3D finite-difference time-domain simulations. The results demonstrate that by introducing thin metal mirrors at both ends, the end facet reflectivity of nanowire is increased by 30–140%, resulting in a much stronger optical feedback. Due to the enhanced interaction between the surface charge oscillation and light, the electric field intensity inside the dielectric gap layer increases, resulting in a much lower threshold gain. For a small diameter in the range of 100–150 nm, the threshold gain is significantly reduced to 60–80% that of nanowire without mirrors. Moreover, as the mode energy is mainly concentrated in the gap between the nanowire and metal substrate, the output power maintains >60% that of nanowire without mirrors in the diameter range of 100–150 nm. The low-threshold miniaturized plasmonic nanowire laser with simple processing technology is promising for low-consumption ultra-compact optoelectronic integrated circuits and on-chip communications.

Tunable metamaterial filter for optical communication in the terahertz frequency range

We present a design of a tunable terahertz (THz) filter (TTF) used in an indoor communication system. The unit cell of TTF is composed of ring-shaped and cross-shaped nanostructures. By utilizing the micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) technique to modify the height between the ring-shaped and cross-shaped nanostructures in the incident transverse electric (TE) mode, the resonant frequencies can be tuned from 0.530 THz to 0.760 THz, which covers an atmospheric window from 0.625 THz to 0.725 THz for indoor wireless optical communication applications. This design of TTF provides an effective approach to select and filter specific signals. It makes the data processing more flexible at the transmission end of the communication system. Furthermore, such a TTF design can be realized the commercialization of communication system components due to its integrated circuit (IC) process compatibility, miniaturization and high flexibility.

High-Efficiency, Broadband, Near Diffraction-Limited, Dielectric Metalens in Ultraviolet Spectrum

Ultraviolet (UV) optical devices have plenteous applications in the fields of nanofabrication, military, medical, sterilization, and others. Traditional optical components utilize gradual phase accumulation phenomena to alter the wave-front of the light, making them bulky, expensive, and inefficient. A dielectric metasurface could provide an auspicious approach to precisely control the amplitude, phase, and polarization of the incident light by abrupt, discrete phase changing with high efficiency due to low absorption losses. Metalenses, being one of the most attainable applications of metasurfaces, can extremely reduce the size and complexity of the optical systems. We present the design of a high-efficiency transmissive UV metalens operating in a broadband range of UV light (250–400 nm) with outstanding focusing characteristics. The polarization conversion efficiency of the nano-rod unit and the focusing efficiency of the metasurface are optimized to be as high as 96% and 77%, respectively. The off-axis focusing characteristics at different incident angles are also investigated. The designed metalens that is composed of silicon nitride nanorods will significantly uphold the advancement of UV photonic devices and can provide opportunities for the miniaturization and integration of the UV nanophotonics and its applications.
