Abstract
The issue of missed nursing care is a problem that affects the overall quality of nursing care in hospitals around the world. However, there is limited research about it in Ethiopia. This study assessed missed nursing care and factors among nurses. An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 485 nurses at the University of Gondar Specialized Hospital. The data were collected from May 15 to June 15, 2022 using a self-administered questionnaire. A simple random sampling technique was used to select study participants. The data was entered to EPI DATA version 4.6 and exported to SPSS version 23 for analysis. Descriptive statistics were computed, and a summative score of missed nursing care was calculated. Then, multiple linear regression analysis was used to identify the factors. A P-value of 0.05 was used to declare significant level. In this study, missed nursing care was 62.5% (95% CI 60.98-64.02). Documentation, vital signs assessment, intravenous care, and assessment as per hospital policy and patient education were the most frequently missed nursing care. Being single in marital status (B = -4.609, P = 0.004), adequacy of nursing staff (B = -2.458, P = 0.003), satisfaction with income (B = -8.753, P = 0.007), working in medical unit (B = -5.708, P = 0.002) and working in both day and night shift (B = 1.731, P = 0.027) were statistically associated factors. More than half of the participants missed basic nursing care. Most of the identified factors correlated with missed nursing care negatively. Efforts should be done to enhance communication between health team members, assign a manageable number of patients per nurse, and adjust shifts and units.

Abstract
AIM To critically evaluate missed care measurement approaches and their application in long-term aged care (LTAC) settings. DESIGN Systematic review using Tawfik's guideline. DATA SOURCES PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL and ProQuest were searched. Supplemental searching was from reference lists of retrieved records, first authors' ORCID homepages and Google advanced search for grey literature. Search limitations were English language, published between 1 January 2001 and 31 December 2022. REVIEW METHOD COVIDENCE was utilized for screening, data extraction and quality appraisal. JBI Critical Appraisal Tools and COSMIN Risk of Bias Tool were used for quality appraisal. Data were summarized and synthesized using narrative analysis. RESULTS Twenty-four publications across 11 regions were included, with two principal methods of missed care measurement: modified standard scales and tailored specific approaches. They were applied inconsistently and generated diverse measurement outcomes. There were challenges even with the most commonly used tool, the BERNCA-NH, including absence of high-quality verification through comparative analysis against an established 'gold standard', reliance on self-administration, incomplete assessment of constructs and inadequate exploration of psychometric properties. CONCLUSION Globally, there are deficiencies in the effectiveness and comprehensiveness of the instruments measuring missed care in LTAC settings. Further research on theoretical and practical perspectives is required. IMPLICATIONS Findings highlighted a critical need to establish a standardized, validated approach to measure missed care in LTAC settings. This review calls for collaborative efforts by researchers, clinical staff and policymakers to develop and implement evidence-based practices as a way of safeguarding the well-being of older clients living in LTAC settings. IMPACT Measurements of missed care in LTAC settings rely on adapting acute care tools. There is a critical gap in measuring missed care in LTAC settings. Developing a new tool could improve care quality and safety in LTAC settings globally. REPORTING METHOD Adhered to PRISMA guideline. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION No patient or public contribution.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Visits to Emergency Departments (ED) can be traumatic for Nursing Home (NH) residents. In Italy, the rate of ED visits by NH residents was recently calculated as 3.3%. The reduction of inappropriate ED visits represents a priority for National Healthcare Systems worldwide. Nevertheless, research on factors associated with ED visits is still under-studied in the Italian setting. This study has two main aims: (i) to describe the baseline characteristics of NH residents visiting ED at regional level; (ii) to assess the characteristics, trends, and factors associated with these visits. METHODS A retrospective study of administrative data for five years was performed in the Piedmont Region. Data from 24,208 NH residents were analysed. Data were obtained by merging two ministerial databases of residential care and ED use. Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the residents, trends, and rates of ED visits were collected. A Generalized Linear Model (GLM) regression was used to evaluate the factors associated with ED visits. RESULTS In 5 years, 12,672 residents made 24,609 ED visits. Aspecific symptoms (45%), dyspnea (17%) and trauma (16%) were the most frequent problems reported at ED. 51% of these visits were coded as non-critical, and 58% were discharged to the NH. The regression analysis showed an increased risk of ED visits for men (OR = 1.61, 95% CI 1.51-1.70) and for residents with a stay in NH longer than 400 days (OR = 2.19, 95% CI 2.08-2.31). CONCLUSIONS Our study indicates that more than half of NH residents' ED visits could potentially be prevented by treating residents in NH. Investments in the creation of a structured and effective network within primary care services, promoting the use of health technology and palliative care approaches, could reduce ED visits and help clinicians manage residents on-site and remotely.

Abstract
Background In nursing homes, elder neglect has come to the forefront. Currently, few studies have examined the impact of personal and organizational factors of geriatric nursing assistants on elder neglect. From the perspective of geriatric nursing assistants, this study aims to explore the current situation and influencing factors of elder neglect in Chinese nursing homes. Methods A convenience sampling method was used to recruit 412 geriatric nursing assistants from 50 nursing homes in China. Participants were surveyed using a demographic questionnaire, the Elder Neglect Scale for Geriatric Nursing Assistants, the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), and the Proactive Personality Scale (PPS). Spearman correlation analysis and multiple linear regression were used to analyze the factors influencing elder neglect. Results Geriatric nursing assistants scored a median of 74 out of 85 on the Elder Neglect Scale. Multiple linear regression analyses showed that the main personal factors influencing geriatric nursing assistants' elder neglect were general self-efficacy (β = 0.312), proactive personality (β = 0.180), and advanced qualification (β = 0.084), while the main organizational factors included monthly salary ≤ 1,900 RMB (β = -0.256), no regular training after induction (β = -0.253), and the number of days off per month (3-4 days off β = 0.192, ≥ 5 days off β = 0.101). Conclusion Although geriatric nursing assistants are at low levels of elder neglect, it remains a cause for concern. Among the personal factors, geriatric nursing assistants who possessed proactive personalities, high self-efficacy and advanced qualifications, exhibited low levels of elder neglect. Among the organizational factors, those who possessed a high number of days off per month portrayed low levels of elder neglect. Conversely, those who received low monthly salaries and no regular training after induction portrayed high levels of elder neglect. To reduce the risk of elder neglect, nursing homes should give due consideration to candidates' self-efficacy and proactive personality traits when recruiting, and focus on fostering these personality traits in their employees during their work. In addition, strengthening regular training for geriatric nursing assistants, optimizing the salary structure, and arranging rest days in a reasonable manner are also necessary measures.

Abstract
AIMS To explore and understand lived experiences of end-of-life communication among nursing home staff. DESIGN Interpretive phenomenological study. METHODS In-person, semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted from May to August 2021 with 21 nursing home staff members involved in end-of-life communication (four managers, four chief nurses, three chief medical officers, three nurses, three psychologists, two occupational therapists, one chief nurse aide and one nurse aide). Data were analysed by van Manen's hermeneutic approach, which uses the lifeworld existentials of spatiality, corporeality, temporality and relationality to guide reflection on the human experience. Data were reported according to the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research. RESULTS Thirteen categories were identified and framed within the four existentials. Regarding spatiality, end-of-life communication took place in a physical, mental, socio-cultural and professional competence space. With regard to corporeality, interviewees reported difficulties in managing their own feelings and those of family caregivers. For temporality, interviewees reported delays in end-of-life communication due to staffing issues and an increase in urgent and temporary relief admissions to nursing homes. To compensate, they tried to assure that all interactions that did take place were of high quality. Finally, with regard to relationality, interviewees lived end-of-life communication through their relationships with family caregivers and colleagues. The supportive role of colleagues was expressed as teamwork, which helped promote reflexivity about how to tailor communication, manage challenging emotions and situations, set aside time for communication, and prepare family caregivers for death. CONCLUSION End-of-life communication was an all-encompassing experience for nursing home staff. The supportive role of colleagues was stressed across all existentials, suggesting that teamwork is essential in delivering effective communication at the end-of-life. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION There was no patient or public contribution to this study, which addresses the experiences of nursing home staff only.

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Nursing Care: A Cross-Sectional Survey-Based Study. J Pers Med 2021; 11:jpm11100945. Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a severe impact on nursing care. This cross-sectional survey-based study compared aspects of nursing care and nurses’ satisfaction with care provided before and during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 936 registered nurses (RNs) rated the frequency with which they performed fundamental care, nursing techniques, patient education, symptom management, and nurse–patient relationships before and during the pandemic. A recursive partitioning for ordered multivariate response in a conditional inference framework approach was applied. More frequent fundamental cares were associated with their frequency before the pandemic (p < 0.001), caring for COVID-19 patients (p < 0.001), and workplace reassignment (p = 0.004). Caring for COVID-19 patients (p < 0.001), workplace reassignment (p = 0.030), and caring for ≤7.4 COVID-19 patients (p = 0.014) increased nursing techniques. RNs in high-intensity COVID-19 units (p = 0.002) who educated patients before the pandemic, stopped this task. RNs caring for COVID-19 patients reported increased symptom management (p < 0.001), as did RNs caring for more non-COVID-19 patients (p = 0.037). Less frequent nurse–patient relationships before the pandemic and working in high-intensity COVID-19 units decreased nurse–patient relationships (p = 0.002). Despite enormous challenges, nurses continued to provide a high level of care. Ensuring the appropriate deployment and education of nurses is crucial to personalize care and to maintain nurses’ satisfaction with the care provided.
