Potential impacts of tolerance to herbivory on population dynamics of a monocarpic herb

Altitude, habitat type and herbivore damage interact in their effects on plant population dynamics

Insects represent one of the most abundant groups of herbivores, and many of them have significant impacts on the dynamics of plant populations. As insects are very sensitive to changes in climatic conditions, we hypothesize that their effects on plant population dynamics will depend on climatic conditions. Knowledge of the variation in herbivore effects on plant population dynamics is, however, still rather sparse. We studied population dynamics and herbivore damage at the individual plant level of Salvia nubicola along a wide altitudinal gradient representing a range of climatic conditions. Using integral projection models, we estimated the effect of changes in herbivore pressure on plant populations in different climates and habitat types. Since we recorded large differences in the extent of herbivore damage along the altitudinal gradient, we expected that the performance of plants from different altitudes would be affected to different degrees by herbivores. Indeed, we found that populations from low altitudes were better able to withstand increased herbivore damage, while populations from high altitudes were suppressed by herbivores. However, the pattern described above was evident only in populations from open habitats. In forest habitats, the differences in population dynamics between low and high altitudes were largely diminished. The effects of herbivores on plants from different altitudes were thus largely habitat specific. Our results indicate potential problems for plant populations from high altitudes in open habitats because of increased herbivore damage. However, forest habitats may provide refuges for the plants at these high altitudes.

Chronic leaf harvesting reduces reproductive success of a tropical dry forest palm in northern Mexico

Palm leaves represent one of the most important non-timber forest products in tropical and subtropical regions. Brahea aculeata is an endemic palm of northwest Mexico, whose leaves are intensively exploited for roof thatch and handcrafts. As part of a long-term defoliation experiment, we evaluated the effects of different leaf harvest on foliar and reproductive traits of adults and attributes of their progeny. We conducted a six-year manipulative experiment and applied three harvesting treatments to adults: high harvest, low harvest and no harvest (control). We recorded leaf production and size, flower and fruit production, seed germination and seedling growth. We also explored trade-offs among foliar and reproductive traits. Harvested palms exhibited drastically reduced reproductive activity, producing fewer flowers and fruits (up to 80 and 90% fewer than unharvested palms). However, individuals in both harvest treatments had larger leaves and increased leaf production rates, compared to control palms. For harvested palms, we registered first a slight increase in leaf traits and a decline in reproductive attributes. These traits showed a gradual reduction and for six period attained very low proportional values compared to control palms (~0.10), however individuals in the harvested treatments maintained the greatest leaf lengths and leaf production rates. Seed germination and seedling growth rates of progeny from harvested palms were significantly lower than control palms, with seeds from the high harvest treatment having the lowest seed production and germination rates. Relationships among leaf (size/production) and reproductive traits (flower/fruit production) were positive during the fourth year, but showed negative relationships for the fifth year suggesting a trade-off between reproduction and growth functions. Leaf harvesting in B. aculeata seems to alter patterns of resource allocation away from reproduction as reflected in a decrease in the probability of reproduction, seed number, germination, and vigor, causing a strong decrease in the reproductive success of this species. Results showed that the consequences of long-term leaf harvest not only affect harvested individuals, but also the fitness and vigor of progeny. This type of long-term studies is essential to understand the population dynamics of non-timber forest products and helps inform sustainable harvesting programs considering intensity, frequencies and periods for recovery from defoliation. Also results may help to explain how intensive and non-planned management schemes may negatively affect vital rates and long-term dynamics of populations from non-timber forest products and other components of the ecosystem.

Cumulative herbivory outpaces compensation for early floral damage on a monocarpic perennial thistle

Floral herbivory represents a major threat to plant reproductive success, driving the importance of plant tolerance mechanisms that minimize fitness costs. However, the cumulative insect herbivory plants experience under natural conditions complicates predictions about tolerance contributions to net fitness. Apical damage can lead to compensatory seed production from late season flowering that ameliorates early season fitness losses. Yet, the compensation realized depends on successful development and herbivore escape by later season flowers. Using monocarpic perennial Cirsium canescens, we quantified seed-reproductive fitness of plants with vs. without experimental damage to the early-developing large apical flower head, with and without a 30-40% herbivory reduction on subsequent flower heads, for two flowering cohorts. Plants with reduced herbivory clearly demonstrated the release of apical dominance and compensation, not overcompensation, for apical damage via greater seed maturation by later flower heads. In contrast, plants that experienced ambient herbivory levels on subsequent heads undercompensated for early apical damage. Individuals had lower total seed set when the apical head was damaged. Compensation was, therefore, possible through a small increase in total flower heads, caused by a higher rate of floral bud survival, and a higher seed maturation rate by subsequent heads, leading to more viable seeds per matured flower head. With ambient cumulative floral herbivory, compensation for apical damage was not sufficient to improve fitness. Variation in the intensity of biological interactions played a role in the success of plant tolerance as a mechanism to maximize individual fitness.
