Comparison of invasive methods and two different stool antigen tests for diagnosis of H pylori infection in patients with gastric bleeding

Abdominal Pain of Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders in Dietary Diversity Patterns and Its Determinants among Healthy Adults in Jimma City, Southwest Ethiopia

Background

Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (FGIDs) and their risk factors vary from region to region. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of abdominal pain of FGIDs in different dietary diversity score (DDS) and its determinant factors among adults in Jimma City, Southwest Ethiopia.

Methods

A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from July 17 to October 27, 2019. The study included systematically selected healthy adults aged ≥ 18years. Data were collected on gastrointestinal symptoms (Rome III), and DDS (24-dietary recall).

Results

Of 865 healthy adults, the prevalence of abdominal pain symptoms co-occurrence was 168(19.4%), dyspepsia, 152(17.6%) and IBS, 133(15.4). Similarly, the co-occurrence was distributed as 81(9.4%) in middle, 64(7.4%) in high and 23(2.6%) in low DDS groups. Although this distribution was different in the DDS groups, it is not significantly associated. With potential confounders adjusted, the behavioral factors associated with the co-occurrence with an AOR (95% CI) were khat chewing: 7.37 (1.76 - 30.87), drinking alcohol: 3.24 (1.15 - 9.18), sedentary life: 12.28 (3.19 - 48.40) and less physical activity: 4.44 (1.43-13.75). Moreover, elevated TAG: 5.44 (2.78 - 8.10), elevated LDL: 4.26 (1.61-11.29), central obesity: 2.78 (1.08 -7), low HDL 5.89 (2.22-15.60), positive H.pylori stool test: 2.7 (1.86 -7.72), being diabetic: 2.7 (1.79 -7.79) and hypertensive: 2.79 (1.08 - 7.14) were associated with the co-occurrence.

Conclusion

Abdominal pain and FGIDs had significant distribution among adults in Jimma City. Therefore, early screening and managing FGIDs in the community is recommendable.

Accuracy of the Helicobacter pylori diagnostic tests in patients with peptic ulcer bleeding: a systematic review and network meta-analysis

INTRODUCTION

Some studies suggest that the accuracy of Helicobacter pylori diagnostic tests is decreased in peptic ulcer bleeding (PUB). We aimed to assess the accuracy of diagnostic tests for H. pylori in patients with PUB in a diagnostic test accuracy (DTA) network meta-analysis.

METHODS

A systematic search was carried out in seven databases until November 2019. We collected or calculated true and false positive and negative values, and constructed 2×2 diagnostic contingency tables with reference standards including histology, rapid urease test, urea breath test, serology, stool antigen test, culture, and polymerase chain reaction. We ranked the index tests by the superiority indices (SI) and calculated pooled sensitivity and specificity of each test.

DISCUSSION

Our search yielded 40 eligible studies with 27 different diagnostic strategies for H. pylori. In 32 articles, the reference standard was a combination of multiple tests. In 12 studies, the index tests were compared with a single testing method. We analyzed seven networks with the reference standards against a single or a combination of diagnostic index tests. None of the index tests had better diagnostic accuracy (SI between 9.94 and 2.17) compared with the individual index tests as all the confidence intervals included 1. Combined testing strategies had higher sensitivities (0.92-0.62) and lower specificities (0.85-0.46) while single tests proved to have higher specificities (0.83-0.77) and lower sensitivities (0.73-0.42).

CONCLUSION

Use of combined tests may have a rationale in clinical practice due to their higher sensitivities. The differences between the included DTA studies limited the comparison of the testing strategies.

Detection of Helicobacter pylori in gastric cancer tissue through histopathology, immunohistochemistry and real-time reverse transcription-PCR

Aim: Helicobacter pylori is usually detected based on hematoxylin-eosin (H-E) features, but, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and real-time PCR (RT-PCR) are more precise in chronic-gastritis. We evaluated the relevance of these tests in Peruvian gastric cancer samples. Materials & methods: We performed and evaluated H-E, IHC staining and RT-PCR in 288 gastric tumors. Slides were independently evaluated by three pathologists. Results: H. pylori was detected in 167/287 through H-E, 140/288 through IHC and 175/288 through RT-PCR, and positive-status were associated (p < 0.001). H. pylori detection by H-E had a good concordance with IHC (kappa index = 0.632) but poor with RT-PCR (kappa index = 0.317). Higher median gene-copies were found in high H. pylori density through H-E or IHC (p < 0.001). Conclusion: H-E evaluation is accurate in gastric cancer, and IHC and RT-PCR can complement its results.

Triple-nanostructuring-based noninvasive electro-immune sensing of CagA toxin for Helicobacter pylori detection

BACKGROUND

Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) is gram-negative, spiral, and microaerophilic bacteria which can survive in ~2%-10% oxygen level. It was reported to populate in human gastric mucosa and leads to gastric cancer without any age or gender difference.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In this study, we are targeting label-free electrochemical immunosensor development for rapid H pylori detection after covalently immobilizing the antibody (CagA) over the nanomaterials modified Au electrode. Titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO₂ NPs), carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (c-MWCNT), and conducting polymer polyindole carboxylic acid (Pin5COOH) composites (TiO₂ NPs/c-MWCNT/Pin5COOH) were synthesized and further utilized in immunosensor development as an electrochemical interface onto Au electrode. The stepwise modifications of CagAantibody/TiO₂ NPs/c-MWNCT/Pin5COOH/Au electrode were electrochemically studied.

RESULTS

Possessing the unique features of advanced materials, the proposed immunosensor reported low sensing limit of 0.1 ng/mL in dynamic linear range of 0.1-8.0 ng/mL with higher stability and reproducibility. Furthermore, developed sensor-based determination of H pylori in five human stool specimens has shown good results with suitable accuracy.

CONCLUSIONS

This work lays strong foundation toward developing nanotechnology-enabled electrochemical sensor for ultrasensitive and early detection of H pylori in noninvasively collected clinical samples.

Zinc Oxide Tetrapods Based Biohybrid Interface for Voltammetric Sensing of Helicobacter pylori

Helicobacter pylori is a Gram-negative, spiral shaped, microaerophilic bacteria that colonizes human gastric mucosa and causes various gastric diseases. In this work, the utilization of ion irradiated zinc oxide tetrapods (ZnO-T) based biohybrid interface accentuates the development of an electrochemical immunosensor for the fast and sensitive detection of H. pylori. After coating of (ZnO-T) over the surface of screen printed electrode (SP-AuE) through electrodeposition, the ZnO-T/SP-AuE was irradiated with N₂⁺ ion of energy 100 keV. The ion irradiation significantly enhances the conductivity of ZnO-T coated SP-AuE. The revamped SP-AuE is further used for establishing an immunosensor interface based upon immobilization of the CagA antigen on ZnO-T electrodeposited over the surface of SP-AuE. The sensing interface demonstrated good linearity (0.2 ng/mL to 50 ng/mL) and limit of detection (0.2 ng/mL). The ion beam irradiated ZnO-T based immunosensor showed significantly high conductivity and enhanced the analytical properties of the working electrode in terms of the sensitivity, detection limit, and response time. A study on the comparison of irradiated and pristine electrode is performed for amperometric sensing of H. pylori. In addition, the significance of work conducted on ion irradiated ZnO-T based interfaces provides a basis of further development of electrochemical immunosensors.

Non-invasive diagnostic tests for Helicobacter pylori infection

BACKGROUND

Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection has been implicated in a number of malignancies and non-malignant conditions including peptic ulcers, non-ulcer dyspepsia, recurrent peptic ulcer bleeding, unexplained iron deficiency anaemia, idiopathic thrombocytopaenia purpura, and colorectal adenomas. The confirmatory diagnosis of H pylori is by endoscopic biopsy, followed by histopathological examination using haemotoxylin and eosin (H & E) stain or special stains such as Giemsa stain and Warthin-Starry stain. Special stains are more accurate than H & E stain. There is significant uncertainty about the diagnostic accuracy of non-invasive tests for diagnosis of H pylori.

OBJECTIVES

To compare the diagnostic accuracy of urea breath test, serology, and stool antigen test, used alone or in combination, for diagnosis of H pylori infection in symptomatic and asymptomatic people, so that eradication therapy for H pylori can be started.

SEARCH METHODS

We searched MEDLINE, Embase, the Science Citation Index and the National Institute for Health Research Health Technology Assessment Database on 4 March 2016. We screened references in the included studies to identify additional studies. We also conducted citation searches of relevant studies, most recently on 4 December 2016. We did not restrict studies by language or publication status, or whether data were collected prospectively or retrospectively.

SELECTION CRITERIA

We included diagnostic accuracy studies that evaluated at least one of the index tests (urea breath test using isotopes such as 13C or 14C, serology and stool antigen test) against the reference standard (histopathological examination using H & E stain, special stains or immunohistochemical stain) in people suspected of having H pylori infection.

DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS

Two review authors independently screened the references to identify relevant studies and independently extracted data. We assessed the methodological quality of studies using the QUADAS-2 tool. We performed meta-analysis by using the hierarchical summary receiver operating characteristic (HSROC) model to estimate and compare SROC curves. Where appropriate, we used bivariate or univariate logistic regression models to estimate summary sensitivities and specificities.

MAIN RESULTS

We included 101 studies involving 11,003 participants, of which 5839 participants (53.1%) had H pylori infection. The prevalence of H pylori infection in the studies ranged from 15.2% to 94.7%, with a median prevalence of 53.7% (interquartile range 42.0% to 66.5%). Most of the studies (57%) included participants with dyspepsia and 53 studies excluded participants who recently had proton pump inhibitors or antibiotics.There was at least an unclear risk of bias or unclear applicability concern for each study.Of the 101 studies, 15 compared the accuracy of two index tests and two studies compared the accuracy of three index tests. Thirty-four studies (4242 participants) evaluated serology; 29 studies (2988 participants) evaluated stool antigen test; 34 studies (3139 participants) evaluated urea breath test-13C; 21 studies (1810 participants) evaluated urea breath test-14C; and two studies (127 participants) evaluated urea breath test but did not report the isotope used. The thresholds used to define test positivity and the staining techniques used for histopathological examination (reference standard) varied between studies. Due to sparse data for each threshold reported, it was not possible to identify the best threshold for each test.Using data from 99 studies in an indirect test comparison, there was statistical evidence of a difference in diagnostic accuracy between urea breath test-13C, urea breath test-14C, serology and stool antigen test (P = 0.024). The diagnostic odds ratios for urea breath test-13C, urea breath test-14C, serology, and stool antigen test were 153 (95% confidence interval (CI) 73.7 to 316), 105 (95% CI 74.0 to 150), 47.4 (95% CI 25.5 to 88.1) and 45.1 (95% CI 24.2 to 84.1). The sensitivity (95% CI) estimated at a fixed specificity of 0.90 (median from studies across the four tests), was 0.94 (95% CI 0.89 to 0.97) for urea breath test-13C, 0.92 (95% CI 0.89 to 0.94) for urea breath test-14C, 0.84 (95% CI 0.74 to 0.91) for serology, and 0.83 (95% CI 0.73 to 0.90) for stool antigen test. This implies that on average, given a specificity of 0.90 and prevalence of 53.7% (median specificity and prevalence in the studies), out of 1000 people tested for H pylori infection, there will be 46 false positives (people without H pylori infection who will be diagnosed as having H pylori infection). In this hypothetical cohort, urea breath test-13C, urea breath test-14C, serology, and stool antigen test will give 30 (95% CI 15 to 58), 42 (95% CI 30 to 58), 86 (95% CI 50 to 140), and 89 (95% CI 52 to 146) false negatives respectively (people with H pylori infection for whom the diagnosis of H pylori will be missed).Direct comparisons were based on few head-to-head studies. The ratios of diagnostic odds ratios (DORs) were 0.68 (95% CI 0.12 to 3.70; P = 0.56) for urea breath test-13C versus serology (seven studies), and 0.88 (95% CI 0.14 to 5.56; P = 0.84) for urea breath test-13C versus stool antigen test (seven studies). The 95% CIs of these estimates overlap with those of the ratios of DORs from the indirect comparison. Data were limited or unavailable for meta-analysis of other direct comparisons.

AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS

In people without a history of gastrectomy and those who have not recently had antibiotics or proton ,pump inhibitors, urea breath tests had high diagnostic accuracy while serology and stool antigen tests were less accurate for diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection.This is based on an indirect test comparison (with potential for bias due to confounding), as evidence from direct comparisons was limited or unavailable. The thresholds used for these tests were highly variable and we were unable to identify specific thresholds that might be useful in clinical practice.We need further comparative studies of high methodological quality to obtain more reliable evidence of relative accuracy between the tests. Such studies should be conducted prospectively in a representative spectrum of participants and clearly reported to ensure low risk of bias. Most importantly, studies should prespecify and clearly report thresholds used, and should avoid inappropriate exclusions.

Uninvestigated dyspepsia and associated factors of patients with gastrointestinal disorders in Dessie Referral Hospital, Northeast Ethiopia

Background

Dyspepsia is a common problem in the community and clinical practice with symptom(s) considered arising from the gastroduodenal region. Dyspepsia burden and associated factors vary from country to country. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of uninvestigated dyspepsia (UD) using Rome III criteria, associated risk factors and self-reported dyspepsia symptoms’ correlation with H. pylori infection.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted among randomly selected 318 out patients with gastrointestinal complaints during the period from September 1 to December 30, 2015. All patients completed a questionnaire for collecting data regarding sociodemographic, lifestyle and functional gastrointestinal disorders. Diagnosis of dyspepsia was made according to the Rome III criteria. H. pylori infection was assessed using stool antigen test. SPSS version 20.0 statistical software package was used for data analysis.

Results

From a total of 318 patients, 48.4% had UD according to Rome III criteria; with 42.1% symptoms of epigastric pain/burning, 26.1% postprandial fullness and 22.6% early satiation. Epigastric pain/burning (AOR = 1.92, 95% CI 1.07–3.43), early satiation (AOR = 2.68, 95% CI 1.38–5.20) and belching (AOR = 4.7, 95% CI 1.54–14.40) were significantly correlated with H. pylori infection. H. pylori infection (AOR = 4.33, 95% CI 2.41–7.76) and aspirin/NSAIDs consumption (AOR = 5.29, 95% CI 2.82–9.93) were independent risk factors for UD. However, consumption of raw fruits/ vegetables at least once a week (AOR = 0.48, 95% CI 0.24–0.98) and taking two or more cups of tea a day (AOR = 0.339, 95% CI 0.17–0.70) were inversely associated with UD.

Conclusions

UD is highly prevalent among adults with gastrointestinal complaints. H. pylori infection is significantly associated with UD and correlates with its symptoms. Individuals with epigastric pain/burning, early satiation and belching should be primary focus of H. pylori infection diagnosis and treatment. The role of consumption of tea, raw fruits and vegetables on dyspepsia needs further large scale study.

Review: clinical management of Helicobacter pylori infection in China

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection has been associated with gastric disorders. The situation of H. pylori infection in China-where a high prevalence of H. pylori infection, a high incidence of gastric cancer, and widespread resistance to clarithromycin, metronidazole, and levofloxacin exist-is quite different from that in Western countries. In order for Chinese clinicians to better manage H. pylori infection, a Chinese Study Group on H. pylori published four consensus reports regarding the management of H. pylori infection in China between 1999 and 2012. The eradication rate with standard triple therapy was <80% in most areas of China. Bismuth is available in China, and bismuth-containing quadruple therapy has been shown to produce a high eradication rate; thus, bismuth quadruple therapy could be recommended both as an initial and as a rescue therapy in China. There is no advantage of sequential therapy over triple therapy in Chinese patients, but the efficacy of concomitant therapy must be studied further. This review introduces the epidemiology, diagnosis, indicators, and therapies for the eradication of H. pylori in China in recent years.

Prevalence of Helicobacter pylori in symptomatic patients and detection of clarithromycin resistance using melting curve analysis

Abstract.

BACKGROUND

Clarithromycin is often a component of combination therapies for Helicobacter pylori eradication; however, increases in resistance rates have decreased the success of the treatment.

OBJECTIVE

This study was designed to determine the prevalence of H pylori infection in symptomatic patients and to detect clarithromycin resistance rates using melting curve analysis.

METHODS

Patients scheduled for upper endoscopy at the Endoscopy Unit of the Department of Gastroenterology, Duzce University, Medical Faculty Hospital, Konuralp/Duzce, Turkey, were assessed for enrollment in the study. Two pairs of gastric biopsy specimens (antrum and corpus) were obtained from each study patient. Histopathologic examination, rapid urease test, culture, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the specimens were used to identify H pylori infection. Clarithromycin resistance was detected using melting curve analysis.

RESULTS

Seventy-five patients (41 women, 34 men; mean [SD]age, 42.6 [14.5] years [range, 17-70 years]) were included in the study. Using histopathology and rapid urease test, H pylori was detected in 40 (53.3%) of the 75 specimens. H pylori was detected using PCR in 40 (53.3%) specimens and by culture in 10 (13.3%) specimens. The specificity and sensitivity of PCR and culture were interpreted by comparing them with the results of histopathologic examination and urease tests. The specificity and sensitivity of PCR were 68.6% and 72.5%, respectively, and the specificity and sensitivity of culture were 97.1% and 22.5%, respectively. Of the 40 isolates, 21 (52.5%) were susceptible to clarithromycin, 12 (30.0%) were resistant, and a mixed susceptibility pattern was detected in 7 (17.5%) specimens. H pylori isolates from 19 (79.2%) of the 24 patients who had formerly used clarithromycin showed clarithromycin resistance.

CONCLUSIONS

The prevalence of H pylori infection was 53.3% for the symptomatic patients in this study, and 47.5% of the isolates showed clarithromycin resistance using melting curve analysis. The PCR-based system used in this study was accurate for the detection of H pylori infection as well as clarithromycin susceptibility testing directly in biopsy specimens.

Comparison of five diagnostic methods for Helicobacter pylori

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Invasive and non-invasive techniques are used to diagnose H. pylori infection. Some factors influence the choice of a diagnostic test, such as the sensitivity and specificity of the tests, the clinical circumstances and the cost-effectiveness of the testing strategy. The aim of this study was to reveal the relationship between different H. pylori infection diagnosis methods, and clarify the application scope of each diagnosis method.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

patients were included in the study, and specimens including biopsies, blood and stool were taken. Biopsies were evaluated by hematoxylin and eosin, and Giemsa staining. A sequence of 294 bp in the ureC (glmM) gene was amplified. The rapid urease test (RUT) was performed using a non-commercial validated test. Stool samples were analyzed using a polyclonal ELISA stool antigen test. A serological assay for IgG antibodies was performed by a commercial Helicobacter pylori IgG ELISA kit.

RESULTS

According to the predefined criteria, a total of 46 (50.5%) patients tested were positive by at least 2 of the 3 biopsy-based methods. The best sensitivity (95.6%) belonged to histology and RUT. The sensitivities of other tests including PCR, serology and stool antigen test were 93.5%, 91.3% and 73.9%, respectively. RUT showed the best specificity (100%), and the specificities of the other tests, including PCR, stool antigen test, histology and serology, were 95.6%, 86.7%, 77.8% and 55.6%, respectively.

CONCLUSION

In view of the better results obtained for invasive vs non-invasive tests, for a more accurate diagnosis, it is advisable not to solely rely on non-invasive methods of H. Pylori diagnosis.

Performance of a one-step fecal sample-based test for diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection in primary care and mass screening settings

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE

An alternative screening test is needed to efficiently eradicate Helicobacter pylori from a population with prevalent upper gastrointestinal lesions. We evaluated the performance of a new one-step fecal test for H. pylori for diagnosis of H. pylori infection in Taiwan.

METHODS

We developed a fecal test to detect H. pylori based on the immunochronomatographic assay and a mixture of monoclonal antibodies. We first recruited symptomatic patients from the primary care setting to evaluate fecal test performance using a reference standard consisting of (13)C urea breath test, rapid urease test, and histology. We also compared the performance of the fecal test with that of others. Next, we recruited asymptomatic participants from the mass screening setting to evaluate population attendance for the fecal test and compared its performance with that of (13)C urea breath test.

RESULTS

In the primary care setting, 117 patients were recruited; H. pylori infection was confirmed in 58 (49.6%). Fecal test sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and accuracy were 88.0% [95% confidence interval (CI): 79.6-96.4%], 100%, 100%, 89.4% (95% CI, 82.0-96.8%), and 94% (95% CI, 89.7-98.3%), respectively. Fecal test specificity and positive predictive value were significantly higher than those of the serological test, whereas the sensitivity and negative predictive value were lower than those of the (13)C urea breath test (p < 0.05). In the mass screening setting, 2720 of 3520 invited individuals participated (77.3%; 95% CI, 76-78.7%); 649 (23.9%) showed positive results. Concordance rate and kappa statistic between the fecal test and (13)C urea breath test were 91.7% (563/614; 95% CI, 89.9-94.1%) and 0.78 (95% CI, 0.73-0.84), respectively.

CONCLUSION

Given the acceptable sensitivity, excellent specificity, and high participation rate to screening, the one-step H. pylori stool antigen test is feasible for wide application in the community.

Has H. pylori prevalence in bleeding peptic ulcer been underestimated? A meta-regression

OBJECTIVES

It has been suggested that prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) in peptic ulcer bleeding (PUB) is lower than that in non-complicated ulcers. As Hp infection is elusive in PUB, we hypothesized that this low prevalence could be related to an insufficiently intensive search for the bacteria. The aim of the study was to evaluate whether the prevalence of Hp in PUB depends on the diagnostic methods used in a given study.

METHODS

A systematic review was performed of studies assessing the prevalence of Hp infection in patients with PUB. Data were extracted in duplicate. Univariate and multivariate random-effects meta-regression analyses were performed to determine the factors that explained the differences in Hp prevalence between studies.

RESULTS

The review retrieved 71 articles, including 8,496 patients. The mean prevalence of Hp infection in PUB was 72%. The meta-regression analysis showed that the most significant variables associated with a high prevalence of Hp infection were the use of a diagnostic test delayed until at least 4 weeks after the PUB episode-odds ratio: 2.08, 95% confidence interval: 1.10-3.93, P=0.024-and a lower mean age of patients-odds ratio: 0.95 per additional year, 95% confidence interval: 0.92-0.99, P=0.008.

CONCLUSIONS

Studies that performed a delayed test and those including younger patients found a higher prevalence of Hp, approaching that recorded in cases of non-bleeding ulcers. These results suggest that the low prevalence of Hp infection described in PUB may be related to the methodology of the studies and to patients' characteristics, and that the true prevalence of Hp in PUB is still to be determined. Our data also support the recent recommendations of the International Consensus on Non-Variceal Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding regarding the performance of a delayed diagnostic test when Hp tests carried out during the acute PUB episode are negative.

Cost-effectiveness of six strategies for Helicobacter pylori diagnosis and management in uninvestigated dyspepsia assuming a high resource intensity practice pattern

BACKGROUND

Initial assessment of dyspepsia often includes noninvasive testing for Helicobacter pylori infection. Commercially available tests vary widely in cost and accuracy. Although there is extensive literature on the cost-effectiveness of H. pylori treatment, there is little information comparing the cost-effectiveness of various currently used, noninvasive testing strategies.

METHODS

A Markov simulation was used to calculate cost per symptom-free year and cost per correct diagnosis. Uncertainty in outcomes was estimated using probabilistic sensitivity analysis.

RESULTS

Under the baseline assumptions, cost per symptom-free year was $122 for empiric proton pump inhibitor (PPI) trial, and costs for the noninvasive test strategies ranged from $123 (stool antigen) to $129 (IgG/IgA combined serology). Confidence intervals had significant overlap.

CONCLUSIONS

Under our assumptions for how testing for H. pylori infection is employed in United States medical practice, the available noninvasive tests all have similar cost-effectiveness between one another as well as with empiric PPI trial.

Progress in developing accurate tests for the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection

Helicobacter pylori is a chronic infectious agent as defined the major pathogen causing gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcer, gastric carcinoma and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, however little is known about its role in functional dyspepsia. H. pylori is the only microorganism known to inhabit the human stomach and the gastric mucosal cells. Chronic H. pylori infection of the stomach is increasingly recognized as a major risk factor for the development of gastroduodenal disease. H. pylori can be detected by non-invasive and invasive methods, the latter requiring endoscopy.
