Directional motion contrast sensitivity in developmental dyslexia

The present study compared the perception of visual motion in two dyslexia classification schemes; the [Boder, E. (1973). Developmental dyslexia: a diagnostic approach based on three atypical reading-spelling patterns. Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology, 15, 663-687.] dyseidetic, dysphonetic and mixed subgroups and [Williams, M. J., Stuart, G. W., Castles, A., & McAnally, K. I. (2003). Contrast sensitivity in subgroups of developmental dyslexia. Vision Research, 43, 467-477.] surface, phonological and mixed subgroups by measuring the contrast sensitivity for drifting gratings at three spatial frequencies (1.0, 4.0, and 8.0 c/deg) and five drift velocities (0.75, 3.0, 6.0, 12.0, and 18.0 cyc/s) in a sample of 32 children with dyslexia and 32 matched normal readers. The findings show that there were no differences in motion direction perception between normal readers and the group with dyslexia when dyslexia was taken as a homogeneous group. Motion direction perception was found to be intact in the dyseidetic and surface dyslexia subgroups and significantly lowered in both mixed dyslexia subgroups. The one inconsistency in the findings was that motion direction perception was significantly lowered in the [Boder, E. (1973). The findings also provide evidence for the presence of a disorder in sequential and temporal order processing that appears to reflect a difficulty in retaining sequences of non-meaningful auditory and visual stimuli in short-term working memory in children with dyslexia.

Pattern-reversal visual-evoked potentials in children with migraine and other primary headache: evidence for maturation disorder?

Recently, evidence for a disturbed maturation of cerebral information processing in migraine came from studies investigating the auditory-evoked contingent negative variation and the auditory-evoked potential from childhood to adulthood. This study is to clarify whether age-dependent development is altered also for the processing of visual stimuli in migraine. Components of pattern-reversal visual-evoked potentials at four different spatial frequencies (which can preferentially activate the magno- and the parvocellular visual system) were compared between children aged 6 and 18 years with primary headache (N = 123; 67 migraine without aura, MO; 32 migraine with aura, MA; 24 tension-type headache, TH) in the headache-free interval and healthy controls (N = 82). Children were divided into two age groups: 6-11 years (pre- and early puberty) and 12-18 years (late and post-puberty). Age-dependent development was normal for N80 and P100 latency in children with primary headache, but altered for N135 latency as indicated by a significant interaction among the factors diagnosis, spatial frequency and age group (P < 0.01). In headache-free controls, N135 latency reduction between pre- and post-puberty age was most pronounced at high spatial frequency. The main 'decline' of N135 latency with increasing age was shifted to lower spatial frequencies in the headache subgroups. The results give evidence that maturation of visual processing is partly disturbed in migraineurs.

Magnocellular and parvocellular contributions to backward masking dysfunction in schizophrenia

Patients with schizophrenia have repeatedly shown deficits in visual processing. These deficits have been well documented using visual backward masking (VBM). The VBM deficit in schizophrenia is thought to be due to aberrant interactions between magnocellular (M) and parvocellular (P) visual pathways. To date, no study has studied these claims with rigorous stimuli isolating M and P pathway responses. This study examined the function of each pathway and their interactions by creating M- and P-biased targets based on their known physiological properties. The M system responds to very low luminance contrast whereas the P system does not, and the P system responds to color contrast whereas the M system generally does not. Thus, to activate the P system, target letters and masks utilized color contrast, and to activate the M system, target letters and masks utilized very low luminance contrast. Four conditions were presented such that M- and P-biased targets were paired with both M- and P-biased masks. A significant Group x Mask Condition interaction was found when a P target was used in combination with an M or P mask, but not when an M target was used. In particular, schizophrenia patients needed significantly longer interstimulus intervals (ISIs) than controls to escape from masking in the P target/M mask condition, but not in any of the other three conditions. In addition, the critical stimulus durations (CSDs) for unmasked stimuli were significantly increased for both M and P targets in patients relative to controls. These findings demonstrate a significant impairment in M, but not P pathway, function in patients with schizophrenia. Furthermore, deficits of letter identification, including those of P targets, may also reflect impairment of the M pathway given the priming function of the dorsal stream.

The effect of peripheral visual motion on focal contrast sensitivity in positive- and negative-symptom schizophrenia

The aim of the present research was to investigate the effect of peripheral (ambient) stimulation on focal visual processing using the far-out jerk effect in normal observers and subgroups with positive- and negative-symptoms in schizophrenia. The far-out jerk effect refers to a reduction in sensitivity of a briefly presented stimulus in central vision in the presence of a sudden movement or oscillation of a stimulus in peripheral vision. In order to measure the far-out jerk effect the focal contrast sensitivity of 5.0Hz modulated sinusoidal target gratings (0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, and 8.0 number of cycles per degree (c/degrees )) was measured in the presence of three kinds of peripheral surround: a blank field, a stationary 0.75 c/degrees grating, and a 5.0Hz drifting 0.75 c/degrees grating (far-out jerk effect). The findings showed that there were no significant differences in focal contrast sensitivity between the control and positive-symptom group with a blank field and stationary grating surround. However, a 5.0Hz drifting grating surround resulted in a significant reduction in contrast sensitivity at 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 c/degrees in the positive-symptom group. In comparison with the control group the negative-symptom group showed a generalised reduction in focal contrast sensitivity, a significantly smaller far-out jerk effect, and a significant reduction in contrast sensitivity at 0.5 c/degrees with a stationary grating surround. The finding that both stationary and moving peripheral surrounds have an inhibitory effect on focal contrast sensitivity suggests that there is a dispersion in the visual demarcation between stationary and temporal events in the perception of visual motion in the negative-symptom group.

Visual backward-masking deficits in schizophrenia: relationship to visual pathway function and symptomatology

Patients with schizophrenia have information processing deficits which can be measured using visual backward-masking (VBM) tasks. There are two types of visual pathways: transient and sustained. The former is more sensitive to low spatial frequency (LSF) and the latter to high spatial frequency (HSF) stimuli. It has been hypothesized that the VBM deficit in schizophrenia is due to an overactive transient channel response to the mask. To examine this hypothesis, patients with schizophrenia and comparison volunteers were tested on a traditional backward-masking task as well as on tasks that altered the mask to bias stimulation toward transient (LSF) or sustained (HSF) channels. Medication effects and relationship to symptomatology were also examined. Patients with schizophrenia showed a significant deficit on the traditional backward-masking task and were also significantly impaired on the LSF- and HSF-masking tasks, though a differential deficit was not found on the latter two tasks. A U-shaped function, indicative of masking by interruption, was found on the LSF- and HSF-masking tasks. Masking performance was not altered when the same patients were tested on and off medication, and performance was related to positive and negative symptoms. In conclusion, the finding of a deficit in patients with schizophrenia on tasks producing a U-shaped function suggests that an aberrant transient response to the mask is producing increased interruption of the sustained response to the target.

Large repulsion, but not attraction, tilt illusions occur when stimulus parameters selectively favour either transient (M-like) or sustained (P-like) mechanisms

A vertical test grating appears tilted away from a surrounding inducing grating which is 15 degrees from vertical (repulsion effect) but towards an inducer 75 degrees from vertical (attraction effect). This is the tilt illusion (TI) and similar effects occur when inducing and test stimuli are presented successively (tilt after-effect or TAE). When it was reported [Wolfe, J. (1984). Vision Research, 24, 1959-1964] that large repulsion TAEs occurred with short test flashes, Wolfe postulated that either there are distinct mechanisms which process brief and longer duration stimuli; or that there are distinct mechanisms which are not primarily concerned with duration but are differentially responsive to temporal parameters, amongst several others. Other evidence that TI attraction effects are not modulated by test flash duration resulted in an hypothesis that repulsion and attraction effects are mediated by transient and sustained mechanisms, respectively [Wenderoth, P., van der Zwan, R., & Johnstone, S. (1989). Perception, 18, 715-728]. We demonstrate that large repulsion TIs can be induced when parameters other than duration are manipulated, including contrast and spatial frequency but that these parameters fail to modulate attraction TIs. These results are consistent with some previous hypotheses regarding the origin of repulsion and attraction effects and with Wolfe's latter hypothesis but do not support the view that the two effects are processed, respectively, by transient and sustained mechanisms.

Visually evoked potentials evoked by moving unidimensional noise stimuli: effects of contrast, spatial frequency, active electrode location, reference electrode location, and stimulus type

We determined the relative importance of electrode derivation, stimulus type, spatial frequency and contrast in determining the relative size of the late negative and early positive responses of motion elicited VEPs. Seven subjects aged 22-48 years with normal vision were tested binocularly. Motion onset and motion reversal were employed as modes of stimulus presentation. For both, pseudo-random one-dimensional noise patterns whose peak power was at 5.2, 2.6, 1.3, 0.325 and 0.1625 cycles per degree (cpd) were stimuli. Contrasts were 70% and 5%. Active electrodes were placed at Oz, 5 cm to the left of Oz, 5 cm to the right of Oz and a frontal midline position (Fpz) and referenced to linked mastoids. Transient motion reversal elicited a prominent positive response present in all subjects and at low contrasts. Motion onset VEPs have a complex waveform which may be either predominantly positive or negative. The most important variables in determining whether a prominent positivity or negativity is present in the motion onset VEP are the contrast and the spatial frequencies. Data such as these are first efforts in developing recommendations for the motion VEP.

Temporal modulation enhances the efficiency of spatial offset discriminations by 6-month-olds

Fourteen- and 24-week-old infants were tested for sensitivity to small position differences under two conditions: (a) the Vernier stimulus was flashed on and off at 1.2 or 4.8 Hz (flash condition); and (b) the Vernier breaks were presented in apparent motion at 1.2 or 4.8 Hz (motion condition). The latter stimulus also contained local flicker cues. Each infant was tested at one temporal frequency with both stimuli. No benefit was shown by 14-week-olds at either temporal frequency from the additional motion and flicker cues. However, 24-week-olds required spatial offsets only one third as large in the motion condition as they required in the flash condition at 4.8 Hz. Ideal observer methodology was used to ensure that the spatial information for both of these discriminations was held strictly equivalent. Increasing sensitivity to flicker and/or motion or uncertainty reduction may underlie the enhancement in discrimination shown by 24-week-olds at 4.8 Hz.

Effects of spatial frequency, duration, and contrast on discriminating motion directions

The minimum speed required for discriminating the direction of drifting gratings was measured at a variety of spatial frequencies, display durations, and contrasts. As was reported previously, speed thresholds were relatively constant for middle and high spatial frequencies, but speed threshold was found to be almost inversely proportional to spatial frequency in the range of 0.25 to 1.0 c/deg. Speed threshold was also found to be inversely proportional to duration between 73 and 40 ms. These results at low frequencies and short durations are shown to be consistent with limits set by the spread of energy in the stimuli, producing velocity uncertainty. A quantitative model of temporal filtering is presented that largely accounts for results at all spatial frequencies and durations by the inclusion of constant positional noise. A discussion includes the possible roles of magnocellular and parvocellular mechanisms in mediating speed thresholds.

Contrast sensitivity in dyslexia

Contrast sensitivity was determined for dyslexic and normal readers. When testing with temporally ramped (i.e. stimuli with gradual temporal onsets and offsets) gratings of 0.6, 4.0, and 12.0 cycles/deg, we found no difference in contrast sensitivity between dyslexic readers and controls. Using 12.0 cycles/deg gratings with transient (i.e. abrupt) onsets and offsets, we found that dyslexic individuals had, compared to controls, markedly inferior contrast sensitivity at the shortest stimulus durations (i.e. 17, 34, and 102 ms). This deficit may reflect more sluggish temporal summation. There was no difference in sensitivity to 0.6 cycles/deg gratings with transient onsets and offsets. Under these conditions, the two groups showed a consistent and equal increase in sensitivity relative to the ramped baseline condition at 0.6 cycles/deg at the longer stimulus durations. This demonstrates that dyslexic readers have no deficit in their ability to detect stimulus transients, a finding which appears to be inconsistent with a transient system deficit. That detection of the low-frequency stimuli was mediated by the transient system is further indicated by the fact that these stimuli were more susceptible to forward masking than were the high-frequency stimuli. The effects of masking of both high and low spatial-frequency stimuli were about equal for dyslexic readers and controls. This is not in agreement with the transient system deficit theory, according to which one would expect there to be less masking of high spatial-frequency stimuli in the case of dyslexic readers.

Visual search, visual streams, and visual architectures

Most psychological, physiological, and computational models of early vision suggest that retinal information is divided into a parallel set of feature modules. The dominant theories of visual search assume that these modules form a "blackboard" architecture: a set of independent representations that communicate only through a central processor. A review of research shows that blackboard-based theories, such as feature-integration theory, cannot easily explain the existing data. The experimental evidence is more consistent with a "network" architecture, which stresses that: (1) feature modules are directly connected to one another, (2) features and their locations are represented together, (3) feature detection and integration are not distinct processing stages, and (4) no executive control process, such as focal attention, is needed to integrate features. Attention is not a spotlight that synthesizes objects from raw features. Instead, it is better to conceptualize attention as an aperture which masks irrelevant visual information.

A pseudomatched filter model applied to the transient system of human vision

A pseudomatched filter configuration is presented as a model for the transient system of the human visual perception. This model has resemblances to the Reichardt [1] and the Rashbass [2] model, but on the other hand the pseudomatched filter model is linear. The choice of the model is based on the shape of the psychophysically measured impulse response and on physiological and functional arguments. The parameters of the model are estimated for different data sets. The behavior of the model agrees with the experimental data in all essential aspects, and can be used for prediction and further modeling of the human visual system.

The shift effect can be elicited with both foveal and peripheral masks

Foveal target detection thresholds are elevated by presenting a counterphasing, vertical squarewave grating in the peripheral retina. This psychophysical "shift effect" has been considered to be an analogue of the neurophysiological "periphery effect" first described by McIlwain (1964; Journal of Neurophysiology, 27, 1154-1173). Physiological response properties of cells from the retina and lateral geniculate nucleus of cat and primate visual systems predict that sensitivity thresholds should also be elevated for peripheral targets in the presence of a foveal counterphasing mask. In these experiments, contrast sensitivities for human observers were obtained using a two-interval forced-choice procedure for peripheral target sinusoids in the presence of a foveal counterphasing mask. A suppressive shift effect was elicited by the foveal counterphasing squarewave mask, but only for counterphasing peripheral sinusoids. Masking was only obtained at the lowest spatial frequencies for both the peripheral and foveal shift effects.

The variety of relations between spatial frequency and reaction time

While stimuli of lower spatial frequency often result in faster responses, this is not invariably the case. Some individuals respond faster to high frequency stimuli on tasks for which most others respond faster to low frequency stimuli. Past experience can also determine the degree to which a low frequency stimulus will mask a high frequency stimulus. These observations suggest that the effects of spatial frequency on visual information processing are under the control of higher level cognitive operations.

Nonlinear parameter estimation applied to psychophysically measured impulse responses

A technique is presented for the estimation of the impulse response, based on data from a psychophysical experiment on threshold vision. A two-step method is used for the estimation of the model parameters. The first step is a Hankel matrix approach, and the second an unweighted least squares method. Results of this estimation technique are presented. The model with the estimated parameters corroborates other psychophysical data. The estimates obtained are adequate for the intended purposes of simulation and modeling.

Contrast, spatial frequency and test duration effects on the tilt aftereffect: implications for underlying mechanisms

The tilt aftereffect (TAE) was measured with a forced-choice technique for gratings of different spatial frequencies, contrasts and adapting and test durations. At short test durations, a 2 c/deg grating gave a larger TAE than a 10 c/deg, while at long test durations the opposite occurred. Low contrast gratings tended to give smaller TAEs at short test durations, and larger TAEs at long durations, than high contrast. A longer adapting duration tended to produce larger TAEs at low contrast for any test duration, but larger TAEs at high contrast only at long test durations. We suggest that the spatial frequency effect reflects differential excitation by the test stimuli of transient and sustained channels, and that the contrast effects reflect both a non-linearity in the relationship between excitation and inhibition, and the adapting effects of the test grating.

Color correspondence in apparent motion

To maintain figural identity during motion perception, the visual system must match images over space and time. Correct matching requires a metric for identifying "corresponding" images, those representing the same physical object. To test whether matching is based on achromatic (black/white) polarity and chromatic (red/green) color, observers viewed an ambiguous motion display and judged the path of apparent motion. Matching preserved black/white identity regardless of whether frames were viewed binocularly or dichoptically. Red/green identity was also preserved, but coherence of motion depended in part on the number of frames in the motion sequence and on the background luminance. These results suggest that correspondence is computed by a weighted metric containing terms for image features coded early in visual processing.

Uniform field flicker: masking and facilitation

The influence of uniform field flicker (UFF) on the contrast threshold for stationary sinusoidal gratings was measured as a function of flicker depth. Changing from no flicker to a flicker depth of 10% produces reliable differences in threshold. Further increases in flicker depth to 60% had little additional influence. The presence of UFF produces masking with low spatial frequency stimuli as expected but at higher spatial frequencies facilitation is obtained. The results are discussed in the context of the distinction between primate Magnocellular and Parvocellular pathways.

Uniform-field flicker masking in control and specifically-disabled readers

Possible transient-system deficiencies in subjects with specific reading disabilities (SRDs) were investigated in groups of 13-year-old SRDs and control normal readers. In experiment 1, in which a 6 Hz uniform-field flicker (UFF) mask and a stationary test stimulus were used, it was found that the overall effect of UFF masking was to reduce differences in contrast sensitivity between SRDs and normal readers. In experiments 2a and 2b, with UFF masks of 6 and 20 Hz and a 6 Hz moving (experiment 2a) or flickering (experiment 2b) test stimulus, contrast sensitivity in both groups was decreased in the presence of the 6 Hz UFF mask. Only the control group, however, showed a further decrease in sensitivity with the 20 Hz UFF mask. This indicates that the groups differ in terms of a mechanism sensitive to high temporal frequencies. A 20 Hz counterphase flickering test stimulus was used in experiment 3 in the presence of 6 Hz UFF, and it was found that SRDs are less sensitive than controls to 20 Hz flicker across all spatial frequencies used. The 6 Hz mask, however, did not differentially affect the two groups. These findings provide further evidence for a transient-system deficit in the visual systems of SRDs, but also suggest a more complex situation by showing that the two groups differ in a high-temporal-frequency mechanism.

Spatial frequency and duration effects on the tilt illusion and orientation acuity

The simultaneous tilt illusion and the decline in variance of orientation judgements (Andrews effect) were measured as a function of exposure duration and spatial frequency. The illusions increased in size (to more than 10 deg) with exposure times up to 30-100 msec, then declined. The Andrews effect was largest at the shortest exposure and asymptoted (for a particular spatial frequency) at about the same exposure duration at which the illusion peaked. The exposure duration at which the illusion peaked was longer if the subject was more dark adapted. When the subjects' rating of the perceptual clarity of the gratings was plotted against the size of the Andrews effect (for the same duration and spatial frequency), the data fell on a single function, whether the spatial frequency was 2, 5, or 10 c/deg. The functional significance of these effects is discussed.

Masking by uniform field flicker: some practical problems

The technique of uniform field flicker (UFF) masking has frequently been used to address issues concerning the relative performance of sustained and transient neural channels in the human visual system. Unfortunately there has been an artifact in the implementation of this method in most published experiments which has meant that the contrast of the target has been flickered in synchrony with the mean luminance. A study is reported in which the artifact was corrected and the effects of UFF masking on the contrast sensitivity function then examined. With this correction, masking was still restricted to low spatial frequencies but it was much weaker than reported originally. It is argued that the original evidence suggesting that UFF masking can be used to examine the functioning of transient and sustained channels has not been interpreted correctly and that the basis for such a claim is weak.

Flicker contrast sensitivity in normal and specifically disabled readers

Temporal contrast sensitivity for counterphase flicker was determined for specifically disabled and normal readers to investigate whether the two groups differ in the functioning of their transient systems. In experiment 1, temporal contrast sensitivity was measured over a range of temporal frequencies with a spatial frequency of 2 cycles deg-1. Disabled readers were less sensitive than the control subjects at all temporal frequencies. In experiment 2, temporal contrast sensitivity was measured at a temporal frequency of 20 Hz over a range of spatial frequencies. Disabled readers were less sensitive than the controls at all spatial frequencies, with the differences between the groups increasing as spatial frequency increased. Both these findings are interpreted as supporting the hypothesis of a transient-system deficit in the visual systems of disabled readers.

Further evidence for a broadband, isotropic mechanism sensitive to high-velocity stimuli

Spatial frequency and orientation selectively, the most prominent properties of image-processing in the striate cortex, are not uniform throughout the spatiotemporal frequency domain. Some current models include one "transient" mechanism at very high velocities (i.e. low spatial and high temporal frequencies), and multiple "sustained" mechanisms elsewhere in the spatiotemporal frequency domain, but they do not consider the parameter of orientation. On the basis of earlier, orthogonal masking experiments, we concluded that the high-velocity mechanism is sensitive to a broad band of spatial frequencies, and has little or no orientation selectivity. In the present study we use pattern adaptation to measure the spatiotemporal properties of this mechanism. In other experiments, we attempt to relate it to the direction-selective motion detectors that also respond at high velocities. Finally we compare the pattern-adaptation results to the results of orthogonal subthreshold summation experiments in the same region of high temporal and low spatial frequencies.
