Perceptual processing at adjacent locations on a single finger: masking and response competition

The impact and specificity of nerve perturbation on novel vibrotactile sensory letter learning

The purposes of this study were to determine if induced radiating paresthesia interferes with (a) acquisition and/or (b) utilization of complex tactile information, and (c) identify whether interference reflects tactile masking or response competition. Radiating ulnar (experiment 1) and median (experiment 2) nerve paresthesia was quantified on ulnar innervated vibrotactile Morse code letter acquisition and recollection tasks. Induced paresthesia differentially impacted letter acquisition and recollection, but only when presented to the same anatomical spatial location.

Short article: The role of working memory in tactile selective attention

Load theory suggests that working memory controls the extent to which irrelevant distractors are processed (e.g., Lavie, Hirst, De Fockert, & Viding, 2004). However, so far this proposal has only been tested in vision. Here, we examine the extent to which tactile selective attention also depends on working memory. In Experiment 1, participants focused their attention on continuous target vibrations while attempting to ignore pulsed distractor vibrations. In Experiment 2, targets were always presented to a particular hand, with distractors being presented to the other hand. In both experiments, a high (vs. low) load in a concurrent working memory task led to greater interference by the tactile distractors. These results establish the role of working memory in the control of tactile selective attention, demonstrating for the first time that the principles of load theory also apply to the tactile modality.

Tactile pattern discrimination at adjacent locations along the proximal-distal axis of the index finger

A discrimination task was used to examine how locations on the glabrous skin of the terminal and middle phalanges of the index finger affect the perceived shape of tactile patterns. On each trial, a pair of same-shape or different-shape patterns was presented successively on the distal half, on the proximal half, or on both halves of a phalanx. Observers responded "same" or "different" depending on the perceived pattern shape. Performance was compared between the two phalanges, with two different pattern sets. For patterns at separate locations, performance was uniformly poor. For patterns at the same location, performance was better on the distal halves than on the proximal halves of both phalanges for one pattern set but not for the other. Performance was best on the distal half of the terminal phalanx. The results are discussed in terms of the densities of innervation of first-order afferents.

Tactile selective attention and body posture: Assessing the multisensory contributions of vision and proprioception

This study addressed the role of proprioceptive and visual cues to body posture during the deployment of tactile spatial attention. Participants made speeded elevation judgments (up vs. down) to vibrotactile targets presented to the finger or thumb of either hand, while attempting to ignore vibrotactile distractors presented to the opposite hand. The first two experiments established the validity of this paradigm and showed that congruency effects were stronger when the target hand was uncertain (Experiment 1) than when it was certain (Experiment 2). Varying the orientation of the hands revealed that these congruency effects were determined by the position of the target and distractor in external space, and not by the particular skin sites stimulated (Experiment 3). Congruency effects increased as the hands were brought closer together in the dark (Experiment 4), demonstrating the role of proprioceptive input in modulating tactile selective attention. This spatial modulation was also demonstrated when a mirror was used to alter the visually perceived separation between the hands (Experiment 5). These results suggest that tactile, spatially selective attention can operate according to an abstract spatial frame of reference, which is significantly modulated by multisensory contributions from both proprioception and vision.

Temporal masking of multidimensional tactual stimuli

Experiments were performed to examine the temporal masking properties of multidimensional tactual stimulation patterns delivered to the left index finger. The stimuli consisted of fixed-frequency sinusoidal motions in the kinesthetic (2 or 4 Hz), midfrequency (30 Hz), and cutaneous (300 Hz) frequency ranges. Seven stimuli composed of one, two, or three spectral components were constructed at each of two signal durations (125 or 250 ms). Subjects identified target signals under three different masking paradigms: forward masking, backward masking, and sandwiched masking (in which the target is presented between two maskers). Target identification was studied as a function of interstimulus interval (ISI) in the range 0 to 640 ms. For both signal durations, percent-correct scores increased with ISI for each of the three masking paradigms. Scores with forward and backward masking were similar and significantly higher than scores obtained with sandwiched masking. Analyses of error trials revealed that subjects showed a tendency to respond, more often than chance, with the masker, the composite of the masker and target, or the combination of the target and a component of the masker. The current results are compared to those obtained in previous studies of tactual recognition masking with brief cutaneous spatial patterns. The results are also discussed in terms of estimates of information transfer (IT) and IT rate, are compared to previous studies with multidimensional tactual signals, and are related to research on the development of tactual aids for the deaf.

A broadband tactile array on the fingertip

A stimulator array is described which can deliver a wide range of displacement waveforms from each contactor, allowing vibratory stimuli to be targeted towards different populations of mechanoreceptors in the skin. The array has a working bandwidth of 20-400 Hz and 100 moving contactors covering an area of 1 cm2 on the fingertip. The array was validated with two experiments on the perception of moving vibratory targets within a uniform background vibration. In the first experiment, with target and background at the same frequency, equivalent discrimination of target movement was obtained at higher values of target/background amplitude ratio for 40-Hz stimuli than for 320-Hz stimuli. In the second experiment, discrimination of target movement within a different-frequency background (320-Hz target and 40-Hz background, or vice versa) was found to be much easier than within a same-frequency background. These results suggest that tactile spatial acuity is better at 320 Hz than 40 Hz and that it is possible to target different receptor populations in the skin by using these frequencies. However, there are problems with this interpretation: on the basis of characterization of touch receptors in previous studies, spatial acuity is expected to be worse at 320 Hz than at 40 Hz.
