Adaptation to different mouth shapes influences visual perception of ambiguous lip speech

Repetitive Exposure to Orofacial Somatosensory Inputs in Speech Perceptual Training Modulates Vowel Categorization in Speech Perception

Orofacial somatosensory inputs may play a role in the link between speech perception and production. Given the fact that speech motor learning, which involves paired auditory and somatosensory inputs, results in changes to speech perceptual representations, somatosensory inputs may also be involved in learning or adaptive processes of speech perception. Here we show that repetitive pairing of somatosensory inputs and sounds, such as occurs during speech production and motor learning, can also induce a change of speech perception. We examined whether the category boundary between /ε/ and /a/ was changed as a result of perceptual training with orofacial somatosensory inputs. The experiment consisted of three phases: Baseline, Training, and Aftereffect. In all phases, a vowel identification test was used to identify the perceptual boundary between /ε/ and /a/. In the Baseline and the Aftereffect phase, an adaptive method based on the maximum-likelihood procedure was applied to detect the category boundary using a small number of trials. In the Training phase, we used the method of constant stimuli in order to expose participants to stimulus variants which covered the range between /ε/ and /a/ evenly. In this phase, to mimic the sensory input that accompanies speech production and learning in an experimental group, somatosensory stimulation was applied in the upward direction when the stimulus sound was presented. A control group (CTL) followed the same training procedure in the absence of somatosensory stimulation. When we compared category boundaries prior to and following paired auditory-somatosensory training, the boundary for participants in the experimental group reliably changed in the direction of /ε/, indicating that the participants perceived /a/ more than /ε/ as a consequence of training. In contrast, the CTL did not show any change. Although a limited number of participants were tested, the perceptual shift was reduced and almost eliminated 1 week later. Our data suggest that repetitive exposure of somatosensory inputs in a task that simulates the sensory pairing which occurs during speech production, changes perceptual system and supports the idea that somatosensory inputs play a role in speech perceptual adaptation, probably contributing to the formation of sound representations for speech perception.

Influences of selective adaptation on perception of audiovisual speech

Research suggests that selective adaptation in speech is a low-level process dependent on sensory-specific information shared between the adaptor and test-stimuli. However, previous research has only examined how adaptors shift perception of unimodal test stimuli, either auditory or visual. In the current series of experiments, we investigated whether adaptation to cross-sensory phonetic information can influence perception of integrated audio-visual phonetic information. We examined how selective adaptation to audio and visual adaptors shift perception of speech along an audiovisual test continuum. This test-continuum consisted of nine audio-/ba/-visual-/va/ stimuli, ranging in visual clarity of the mouth. When the mouth was clearly visible, perceivers "heard" the audio-visual stimulus as an integrated "va" percept 93.7% of the time (e.g., McGurk & MacDonald, 1976). As visibility of the mouth became less clear across the nine-item continuum, the audio-visual "va" percept weakened, resulting in a continuum ranging in audio-visual percepts from /va/ to /ba/. Perception of the test-stimuli was tested before and after adaptation. Changes in audiovisual speech perception were observed following adaptation to visual-/va/ and audiovisual-/va/, but not following adaptation to auditory-/va/, auditory-/ba/, or visual-/ba/. Adaptation modulates perception of integrated audio-visual speech by modulating the processing of sensory-specific information. The results suggest that auditory and visual speech information are not completely integrated at the level of selective adaptation.

Visual speech acts differently than lexical context in supporting speech perception

The speech signal is often badly articulated, and heard under difficult listening conditions. To deal with these problems, listeners make use of various types of context. In the current study, we examine a type of context that in previous work has been shown to affect how listeners report what they hear: visual speech (i.e., the visible movements of the speaker's articulators). Despite the clear utility of this type of context under certain conditions, prior studies have shown that visually driven phonetic percepts (via the "McGurk" effect) are not "real" enough to affect perception of later-occurring speech; such percepts have not produced selective adaptation effects. This failure contrasts with successful adaptation by sounds that are generated by lexical context-the word that a sound occurs within. We demonstrate here that this dissociation is robust, leading to the conclusion that visual and lexical contexts operate differently. We suggest that the dissociation reflects the dual nature of speech as both a perceptual object and a linguistic object. Visual speech seems to contribute directly to the computations of the perceptual object but not the linguistic one, while lexical context is used in both types of computations.

Adaptation to antifaces and the perception of correct famous identity in an average face

Previous experiments have examined exposure to anti-identities (faces that possess traits opposite to an identity through a population average), finding that exposure to antifaces enhances recognition of the plus-identity images. Here we examine adaptation to antifaces using famous female celebrities. We demonstrate: that exposure to a color and shape transformed antiface of a celebrity increases the likelihood of perceiving the identity from which the antiface was manufactured in a composite face and that the effect shows size invariance (experiment 1), equivalent effects are seen in internet and laboratory-based studies (experiment 2), adaptation to shape-only antifaces has stronger effects on identity recognition than adaptation to color-only antifaces (experiment 3), and exposure to male versions of the antifaces does not influence the perception of female faces (experiment 4). Across these studies we found an effect of order where aftereffects were more pronounced in early than later trials. Overall, our studies delineate several aspects of identity aftereffects and support the proposal that identity is coded relative to other faces with special reference to a relatively sex-specific mean face representation.

Selectivity of face distortion aftereffects for differences in expression or gender

The perceived configuration of a face can be strongly biased by prior adaptation to a face with a distorted configuration. These aftereffects have been found to be weaker when the adapt and test faces differ along a number of dimensions. We asked whether the adaptation shows more transfer between faces that share a common identity, by comparing the strength of aftereffects when the adapt and test faces differed either in expression (a configural change in the same face identity) or gender (a configural change between identities). Observers adapted to expanded or contracted images of either male or female faces with either happy or fearful expressions, and then judged the perceived configuration in either the same faces or faces with a different gender and/or expression. The adaptation included exposure to a single face (e.g., expanded happy) or to alternated faces where the distortion was contingent on the attribute (e.g., expanded happy versus contracted fearful). In all cases the aftereffects showed strong transfer and thus only weak selectivity. However, selectivity was equal or stronger for the change in expression than gender. Our results thus suggest that the distortion aftereffects between faces can be weakly modulated by both variant and invariant attributes of the face.

Facial attractiveness: evolutionary based research

Face preferences affect a diverse range of critical social outcomes, from mate choices and decisions about platonic relationships to hiring decisions and decisions about social exchange. Firstly, we review the facial characteristics that influence attractiveness judgements of faces (e.g. symmetry, sexually dimorphic shape cues, averageness, skin colour/texture and cues to personality) and then review several important sources of individual differences in face preferences (e.g. hormone levels and fertility, own attractiveness and personality, visual experience, familiarity and imprinting, social learning). The research relating to these issues highlights flexible, sophisticated systems that support and promote adaptive responses to faces that appear to function to maximize the benefits of both our mate choices and more general decisions about other types of social partners.
