Abstract
The impacting research on emotions of the last decades was carried out with different methods. The most popular was based on the use of a validated sample of slides, the International Affective Pictures System (IAPS), divided mainly into pleasant, neutral and unpleasant categories, and on fMRI as a measure of brain activation induced by these stimuli. With the present coordinate-based meta-analysis (CBMA) based on ALE approach, we aimed to unmask the main brain networks involved in the contrast of pleasant vs. neutral and unpleasant vs. neutral IAPS slide categories. Furthermore, we included studies employing both IAPS and non-IAPS (but analogously validated) pictures, a condition termed as IAPS EXTENDED. After selecting 97 papers published in the 2000-2023 interval, the planned contrasts were analyzed by also considering their interaction with the Load factor of the concomitant task, which comprised the conditions: No Load (passive viewing), Low-Load tasks and High-Load tasks. We analyzed a total of 152 experiments (106 focusing on the negative vs. neutral contrast; 46 reporting positive vs. neutral contrasts). We additionally performed conjunction and contrast analyses. Results confirmed outcomes of past meta-analyses on the involvement of a number of cortical and subcortical paralimbic and limbic regions during unpleasant picture processing, but the increase of the pubblications on this topic in last years, together with a more fine-grained analysis, allowed us to find also the involvement of additional areas, such as the right middle frontal gyrus, left inferior frontal gyrus (BA 9), posterior cingulate, and left inferior parietal lobule. Concerning passive viewing and low-load tasks, a clear frontal asymmetry emerged with greater right prefrontal activation (BA9) to unpleasant vs. pleasant pictures, whereas, during No Load tasks only, left frontal dominance to pleasant vs. unpleasant stimuli was found (BA13). The unpleasant vs. neutral comparison on High-Load tasks (the pleasant condition had an insufficient sample size) revealed a specific lateralization of several areas of the right hemisphere (STG-BA 38, MFG-BA 46, FG-BA 37), whereas, in the other load conditions, the inferior frontal gyrus was right lateralized, but the main activated regions were bilateral or left lateralized. Results are discussed considering the effects of both valence and task/load variables, and the involvement of hippocampus/amygdala, hemispheric asymmetries of emotions, the occipito-temporal areas, several sub-regions of the prefrontal/orbitofrontal cortex, and an extended motor network.

Abstract
Obesity results from excessive caloric input associated with overeating and presents a major public health challenge. The hypothalamus has received significant attention for its role in governing feeding behavior and body weight homeostasis. However, extrahypothalamic brain circuits also regulate appetite and consumption by altering sensory perception, motivation, and reward. We recently discovered a population of basal forebrain cholinergic (BFc) neurons that regulate appetite suppression. Through viral tracing methods in the mouse model, we found that BFc neurons densely innervate the basolateral amygdala (BLA), a limbic structure involved in motivated behaviors. Using channelrhodopsin-assisted circuit mapping, we identified cholinergic responses in BLA neurons following BFc circuit manipulations. Furthermore, in vivo acetylcholine sensor and genetically encoded calcium indicator imaging within the BLA (using GACh3 and GCaMP, respectively) revealed selective response patterns of activity during feeding. Finally, through optogenetic manipulations in vivo, we found that increased cholinergic signaling from the BFc to the BLA suppresses appetite and food intake. Together, these data support a model in which cholinergic signaling from the BFc to the BLA directly influences appetite and feeding behavior.

Abstract
Behavioral and functional studies describe hemispheric asymmetry in anxiety and metabolic behaviors in responses to stress. However, no study has reported serotonergic receptor (the 5-HT1A receptor) lateralization in the basolateral amygdala (BLA) in vivo on anxiety and metabolic behaviors under stress. In the present study, the effect of unilateral and bilateral suppression of the 5-HT1A receptor in the BLA on anxiety, and metabolic responses to chronic restraint stress was assessed. Male Wistar rats 7 days after cannulation into the BLA received chronic restraint stress for 14 consecutive days. 20 minutes before induction of stress, WAY-100-635 (selective 5-HT1A antagonist) or sterile saline (vehicle) was administered either uni- or bi-laterally into the BLA. Behavioral (elevated plus maze; EPM, and open field test), and metabolic parameter studies were performed. Results showed that stress causes a significant increase in weight gain compared to control. In the non-stress condition, the left and bilaterally, and in the stress condition the right, left, and both sides, inhibition of 5-HT1A in the BLA reduced weight gain. In the restraint stress condition, only inhibition of the 5-HT1A receptor in the left BLA led to decreased food intake compared to the control group. In stress conditions, inhibition of the 5-HT1A receptor on the right, left, and bilateral BLA increased water intake compared to the stress group. Inhibition of the 5-HT1A receptor on the left side of the BLA by WAY-100-635 induced anxiety-like behaviors in stressed rats. Similarly, WAY-100-635 on the left BLA effectively caused anxiety-like behaviors in both EPM and open field tests in the control animals. In conclusion, it seems that 5-HT1A receptors in the left BLA are more responsible for anxiety-like behaviors and metabolic changes in responses to stress.

Abstract
This article summarizes the results of studies in which functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was performed to investigate the neurofunctional activations involved in processing visual stimuli from food in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED). A systematic review approach based on the PRISMA guidelines was used. Three databases-Scopus, PubMed and Web of Science (WoS)-were searched for brain correlates of each eating disorder. From an original pool of 688 articles, 30 articles were included and discussed. The selected studies did not always overlap in terms of research design and observed outcomes, but it was possible to identify some regularities that characterized each eating disorder. As if there were two complementary regulatory strategies, AN seems to be associated with general hyperactivity in brain regions involved in top-down control and emotional areas, such as the amygdala, insula and hypothalamus. The insula and striatum are hyperactive in BN patients and likely involved in abnormalities of impulsivity and emotion regulation. Finally, the temporal cortex and striatum appear to be involved in the neural correlates of BED, linking this condition to use of dissociative strategies and addictive aspects. Although further studies are needed, this review shows that there are specific activation pathways. Therefore, it is necessary to pay special attention to triggers, targets and maintenance processes in order to plan effective therapeutic interventions. Clinical implications are discussed.

Abstract
Emotional eating is commonly defined as the tendency to (over)eat in response to emotion. Insofar as it involves the (over)consumption of high-calorie palatable foods, emotional eating is a maladaptive behavior that can lead to eating disorders, and ultimately to metabolic disorders and obesity. Emotional eating is associated with eating disorder subtypes and with abnormalities in emotion processing at a behavioral level. However, not enough is known about the neural pathways involved in both emotion processing and food intake. In this review, we provide an overview of recent neuroimaging studies, highlighting the brain correlates between emotions and eating behavior that may be involved in emotional eating. Interaction between neural and neuro-endocrine pathways (HPA axis) may be involved. In addition to behavioral interventions, there is a need for a holistic approach encompassing both neural and physiological levels to prevent emotional eating. Based on recent imaging, this review indicates that more attention should be paid to prefrontal areas, the insular and orbitofrontal cortices, and reward pathways, in addition to regions that play a major role in both the cognitive control of emotions and eating behavior. Identifying these brain regions could allow for neuromodulation interventions, including neurofeedback training, which deserves further investigation.

Abstract
Obesity remains a pandemic of the 21st century. While there are many causes of obesity and potential treatments that are currently known, source data indicate that the number of patients is constantly increasing. Neural mechanisms have become the subject of research and there has been an introduction of functional magnetic resonance imaging in obesity-associated altered neural signaling. Functional magnetic resonance imaging has been established as the gold standard in the assessment of neuronal functions related to nutrition. Thanks to this, it has become possible to delineate those regions of the brain that show altered activity in obese individuals. An integrative review of the literature was conducted using the keywords ““functional neuroimaging” OR “functional magnetic resonance “OR “fmri” and “obesity” and “reward circuit and obesity” in PubMed and Google Scholar databases from 2017 through May 2022. Results in English and using functional magnetic resonance imaging to evaluate brain response to diet and food images were identified. The results from functional magnetic resonance imaging may help to identify relationships between neuronal mechanisms and causes of obesity. Furthermore, they may provide a substrate for etiology-based treatment and provide new opportunities for the development of obesity pharmacotherapy.

Abstract
Food can relieve an individual's emotions, especially for emotional eaters. For instance, chewing alleviates negative emotions. Solid and liquid foods comprise a huge part of our daily lives, and the chewiness of solid foods is always high. Here, we explored whether people, especially emotional eaters, have higher eating intentions to eat highly chewy foods while experiencing negative emotions by comparing their eating intentions toward solid and liquid foods. To this end, we conducted a survey of 147 participants using a questionnaire (Experiment 1) to understand their eating intention toward five types of food (purple potato, maize, black soya bean, mango, and soybean; each food group contained a solid food and a liquid food) while experiencing negative emotions. The results showed that individuals exhibited higher eating intention toward solid food compared with liquid food while experiencing negative emotions. In Experiment 2, we selected 85 and 65 high-emotional and low-emotional eaters, respectively, and further explored their preference for solid foods. The results showed that individuals with high levels of emotional eating exhibited higher intentions toward solid food while experiencing negative emotions compared with those with low levels of emotional eating. In conclusion, this study proved that individuals' higher eating intentions toward highly chewable food were pronounced among individuals with high levels of emotional eating under negative emotion conditions.

Abstract
The human sense of smell and the ability to detect and distinguish odors allows for the extraction of valuable information from the environment, thereby driving human behavior. Not only can the sense of smell help to monitor the safety of inhaled air, but it can also help to evaluate the edibility of food. Therefore, in an effort to further our understanding of the human sense of smell, the aim of this meta-analysis was to provide the scientific community with activation probability maps of the functional anatomy of the olfactory system, in addition to separate activation maps for specific odor categories (pleasant, food, and aversive odors). The activation likelihood estimation (ALE) method was utilized to quantify all relevant and available data to perform a formal statistical analysis on the inter-study concordance of various odor categories. A total of 81 studies (108 contrasts, 1053 foci) fulfilled our inclusion criteria. Significant ALE peaks were observed in all odor categories in brain areas typically associated with the functional neuroanatomy of olfaction including the piriform cortex, amygdala, insula, and orbitofrontal cortex, amongst others. Additional contrast analyses indicate clear differences in neural activation patterns between odor categories.

Abstract
Overconsumption of high-calorie or unhealthy foods commonly leads to weight gain. Understanding people’s neural responses to high-calorie food cues might help to develop better interventions for preventing or reducing overeating and weight gain. In this review, we conducted a coordinate-based meta-analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging studies of viewing high-calorie food cues in both normal-weight people and people with obesity. Electronic databases were searched for relevant articles, retrieving 59 eligible studies containing 2410 unique participants. The results of an activation likelihood estimation indicate large clusters in a range of structures, including the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), amygdala, insula/frontal operculum, culmen, as well as the middle occipital gyrus, lingual gyrus, and fusiform gyrus. Conjunction analysis suggested that both normal-weight people and people with obesity activated OFC, supporting that the two groups share common neural substrates of reward processing when viewing high-calorie food cues. The contrast analyses did not show significant activations when comparing obesity with normal-weight. Together, these results provide new important evidence for the neural mechanism underlying high-calorie food cues processing, and new insights into common and distinct brain activations of viewing high-calorie food cues between people with obesity and normal-weight people.

Abstract
Food intake and energy expenditure are regulated by peripheral signals providing feedback on nutrient status and adiposity to the central nervous system. One of these signals is the pancreatic hormone, insulin. Unlike peripheral administration of insulin, which often causes weight gain, central administration of insulin leads to a reduction in food intake and body weight when administered long-term. This is a result of feedback processes in regions of the brain that regulate food intake. Within the hypothalamus, the arcuate nucleus (ARC) contains subpopulations of neurones that produce orexinergic neuropeptides agouti-related peptide (AgRP)/neuropeptide Y (NPY) and anorexigenic neuropeptides, pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC)/cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART). Intracerebroventricular infusion of insulin down-regulates the expression of AgRP/NPY at the same time as up-regulating expression of POMC/CART. Recent evidence suggests that insulin activity within the amygdala may play an important role in regulating energy balance. Insulin infusion into the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) can decrease food intake, possibly by modulating activity of NPY and other neurone subpopulations. Insulin signalling within the CeA can also influence stress-induced obesity. Overall, it is evident that the CeA is a critical target for insulin signalling and the regulation of energy balance.

Abstract
Theoretical work suggests that obesity is related to enhanced incentive salience of food cues. However, evidence from both behavioral and neuroimaging studies on the topic is mixed. In this work we review the literature on cue reactivity in obesity and perform a preregistered meta-analysis of studies investigating effects of obesity on brain responses to passive food pictures viewing. Further, we examine whether age influences brain responses to food cues in obesity. In the meta-analysis we included 13 studies of children and adults that investigated group differences (obese vs. lean) in responses to food vs. non-food pictures viewing. While we found no significant differences in the overall meta-analysis, we show that age significantly influences brain response differences to food cues in the left insula and the left fusiform gyrus. In the left insula, obese vs. lean brain differences in response to food cues decreased with age, while in the left fusiform gyrus the pattern was opposite. Our results suggest that there is little evidence for obesity-related differences in responses to food cues and that such differences might be mediated by additional factors that are often not considered.
