Abstract
Although the ability to recognise familiar faces is a critical part of everyday life, the process by which a face becomes familiar in the real world is not fully understood. Previous research has focussed on the importance of perceptual experience. However, in natural viewing, perceptual experience with faces is accompanied by increased knowledge about the person and the context in which they are encountered. Although conceptual information is known to be crucial for the formation of new episodic memories, it requires a period of consolidation. It is unclear, however, whether a similar process occurs when we learn new faces. Using a natural viewing paradigm, we investigated how the context in which events are presented influences our understanding of those events and whether, after a period of consolidation, this has a subsequent effect on face recognition. The context was manipulated by presenting events in 1) the original sequence, or 2) a scrambled sequence. Although this manipulation was predicted to have a significant effect on conceptual understanding of events, it had no effect on overall visual experience with the faces. Our prediction was that this contextual manipulation would affect face recognition after the information has been consolidated into memory. We found that understanding of the narrative was greater for participants who viewed the movie in the original sequence compared to those that viewed the movie in a scrambled order. To determine if the context in which the movie was viewed had an effect on face recognition, we compared recognition in the original and scrambled condition. We found an overall effect of conceptual knowledge on face recognition. That is, participants who viewed the original sequence had higher face recognition compared to participants who viewed the scrambled sequence. However, our planned comparisons did not reveal a greater effect of conceptual knowledge on face recognition after consolidation. In an exploratory analysis, we found that overlap in conceptual knowledge between participants was significantly correlated with the overlap in face recognition. We also found that this relationship was greater after a period of consolidation. Together, these findings provide new insights into the role of non-visual, conceptual knowledge for face recognition during natural viewing.

Abstract
How does our environment impact what we will later remember? Early work in real-world environments suggested that having matching encoding/retrieval contexts improves memory. However, some laboratory-based studies have not replicated this advantageous context-dependent memory effect. Using virtual reality methods, we find support for context-dependent memory effects and examine an influence of memory schema and dynamic environments. Participants (N = 240) remembered more objects when in the same virtual environment (context) as during encoding. This traded-off with falsely "recognizing" more similar lures. Experimentally manipulating the virtual objects and environments revealed that a congruent object/environment schema aids recall (but not recognition), though a dynamic background does not. These findings further our understanding of when and how context affects our memory through a naturalistic approach to studying such effects.

Abstract
Successful memory retrieval relies on memory processes to access an internal representation and decision processes to evaluate and respond to the accessed representation, both of which are supported by fluctuations in theta (4-8Hz) activity. However, the extent to which decision making processes are engaged following a memory response is unclear. Here, we recorded scalp electroencephalography (EEG) while human participants performed a recognition memory task. We focused on response-locked data, allowing us to investigate the processes that occur prior to and following a memory response. We replicate previous work and find that prior to a memory response theta power is greater for identification of previously studied items (hits) relative to rejection of novel lures (correct rejections; CRs). Following the memory response, the theta power dissociation 'flips' whereby theta power is greater for CRs relative to hits. We find that the post-response 'flip' is more robust for hits that are committed quickly, potentially reflecting a positive feedback signal for strongly remembered experiences. Our findings suggest that there are potentially distinct processes occurring before and after a memory response that are modulated by successful memory retrieval.

Abstract
Reinstating the context present at encoding during the test phase generally enhances recognition memory compared with changing the context when specific item-context associations are established during encoding. However, it remains unclear whether context reinstatement improves the performance in differentiating between old and similar items in recognition memory tests and what underlying cognitive processes are involved. Using the context reinstatement paradigm together with event-related potentials (ERP), we examined the context-dependent effects of background scenes on recognition discrimination among similar objects. Participants were instructed to associate intentionally specific objects with background scenes during the encoding phase and subsequently complete an object recognition memory task, during which old and similar new objects were presented superimposed over the studied old or similar new background scenes. Electroencephalogram was recorded to measure the electrophysiological manifestations of cognitive processes associated with episodic retrieval. Behavioral results revealed enhanced performance in differentiating old from similar objects in the old context, as opposed to the similar context condition. Importantly, ERP results indicated a more pronounced recollection-related parietal object old/new effect in the old context compared to the similar context condition. This suggests that the ability to distinguish between old and similar objects in recognition memory is primarily driven by recollection rather than familiarity, particularly when the encoding context is reinstated during the test phase. Our findings are in line with the account that the impact of context reinstatement on object recognition memory is attributable to the enhanced recollection of specific item-context associations during retrieval and provides evidence for the specificity of episodic associative representations.

Abstract
Evidence suggests that physical changes in word appearance, such as those written in all capital letters, and the use of effective encoding strategies, such as self-referential processing, improves memory. In this study we examined the extent both physical changes in word appearance (case) and encoding strategies engaged at study influence memory as measured by both explicit and implicit memory measures. Participants studied words written in upper and lower case under three encoding conditions (self-reference, semantic control, case judgment), which was followed by an implicit (word stem completion) and then an explicit (item and context) memory test. There were two primary results. First, analyses indicated a case enhancement effect for item memory where words written in upper case were better remembered than lower case, but only when participants were prompted to attend to the case of the word. Importantly, this case enhancement effect came at a cost to context memory for words written in upper case. Second, self-referencing increased explicit memory performance relative to control, but there was no effect on implicit memory. Overall, results suggest an item-context memory trade-off for words written in upper case, highlighting a potential downside to writing in all capital letters, and further, that both physical changes to the appearance of words and differing encoding strategies have a strong influence on explicit, but not implicit memory.

Abstract
The context reinstatement (CR) effect is the finding that target stimuli are better remembered when presented in the same context as during initial encoding, compared with a different context. It remains unclear, however, whether emotional features of the context affect this memory benefit. In two experiments, we investigated whether the anxiety-provoking nature of a context scene might influence the CR effect. During encoding, participants viewed target faces paired with scenes validated as either highly anxiety-provoking or not, half of which contained other faces embedded within the scene. During retrieval, target faces were presented again with either the same or a new context scene. In Experiment 1, the expected CR effect was observed when the contexts were low-anxiety scenes or high-anxiety scenes without embedded faces. In contrast, the CR effect was absent when the contexts were high-anxiety scenes containing embedded faces. In Experiment 2, to determine whether the presence of embedded faces or the anxiety level of scenes reduced the CR effect, we included an additional context type: low-anxiety scenes with embedded faces. Once again, the CR effect was absent only when the context scene was highly anxiety-provoking with embedded faces: reinstating this context type failed to benefit memory for targets. Results suggest that the benefit to target memory via reinstating a context depends critically on emotional characteristics of the reinstated context.

Abstract
We can recognise people that we know across their lifespan. We see family members age, and we can recognise celebrities across long careers. How is this possible, despite the very large facial changes that occur as people get older? Here we analyse the statistical properties of faces as they age, sampling photos of the same people from their 20s to their 70s. Across a number of simulations, we observe that individuals' faces retain some idiosyncratic physical properties across the adult lifespan that can be used to support moderate levels of age-independent recognition. However, we found that models based exclusively on image-similarity only achieved limited success in recognising faces across age. In contrast, more robust recognition was achieved with the introduction of a minimal top-down familiarisation procedure. Such models can incorporate the within-person variability associated with a particular individual to show a surprisingly high level of generalisation, even across the lifespan. The analysis of this variability reveals a powerful statistical tool for understanding recognition, and demonstrates how visual representations may support operations typically thought to require conceptual properties.

How do we learn what we know about others? Answering this question requires understanding the perceptual mechanisms with which we recognize individuals and their actions, and the processes by which the resulting perceptual representations lead to inferences about people's mental states and traits. This review discusses recent behavioral, neural, and computational studies that have contributed to this broad research program, encompassing both social perception and social cognition.

Abstract
Feeling-of-knowing (FOK) judgments are judgments of future recognizability of currently inaccessible information. They are known to depend both on the access to partial information about a target of retrieval and on the familiarity of the cue that is used as a memory probe. In the present study we assessed whether FOK judgments could also be shaped by incidental environmental context in which these judgments are made. To this end, we investigated 2 phenomena previously documented in studies on recognition memory-a context familiarity effect and a context reinstatement effect-in the procedure used to investigate FOK judgments. In 2 experiments, we found that FOK judgments increase in the presence of a familiar environmental context. The results of both experiments further revealed still higher FOK judgments when made in the presence of environmental context matching the encoding context of both cue and its associated target. The effect of context familiarity on FOK judgment was paralleled by an effect on the latencies of an unsuccessful memory search, but the effect of context reinstatement was not. Importantly, the elevated feeling of knowing in reinstated and familiar contexts was not accompanied by an increase in the accuracy of those judgments. Together, these results demonstrate that metacognitive processes are shaped by the overall volume of memory information accessed at retrieval, independently of whether this memory information is related to a cue, a target, or a context in which remembering takes place. Abstract
Research on context-mediated facilitation of recognition memory distinguishes between the effects of reinstating the exact same context previously associated with a target and a context that is familiar but not directly associated with the target. As both effects are difficult to produce reliably in recognition experiments, attention has turned to measures that may explain inconsistencies, such as the extent to which instructions encourage association between targets and contexts. The aim of the current study was to examine the distinctive and interactive effects of three factors that may lead to variability in context effects (CEs), namely type of instructions given at learning, delay between learning and test, and exposure time for targets and contexts at learning. Using a comprehensive paradigm developed by Vakil and colleagues, with photographs of faces serving as target and context stimuli, both exposure time and delay were shown to be associated with the occurrence of CEs and appeared to interact with one another in determining the nature of these effects. Unlike several previous studies, false alarms did not increase when foils were presented with familiar contexts. Also unexpectedly, the instruction manipulation did not appear to strengthen target-context binding. It may instead have increased attention to contexts at the expense of targets, as suggested by the finding that direct memory for context improved under associative instruction conditions. Overall, the study demonstrates the importance of understanding and controlling various factors that may potentially influence the emergence of both reinstatement and familiarity-based CEs, among them exposure time and learning-to-test delay.
