Janus Micromotors for Photophoretic Motion and Photon Upconversion Applications Using a Single Near-Infrared Wavelength

External stimuli can trigger changes in temperature, concentration, and momentum between micromotors and the medium, causing their propulsion and enabling them to perform different tasks with improved kinetic efficiencies. Light-activated micromotors are attractive systems that achieve improved motion and have the potential for high spatiotemporal control. Photophoretic swarming motion represents an attractive means to induce micromotor movement through the generation of temperature gradients in the medium, enabling the micromotors to move from cold to hot regions. The micromotors studied herein are assembled with Fe3O4 nanoparticles, and NaGdF4:Yb3+,Er3+/NaGdF4:Yb3+ and LiYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+ upconverting nanoparticles. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles were localized to one hemisphere to produce a Janus architecture that facilitates improved upconversion luminescence with the upconverting nanoparticles distributed throughout. Under 976 nm excitation, Fe3O4 nanoparticles generate the temperature gradient, while the upconverting nanoparticles produce visible light that is used for micromotor motion tracking and triggering of reactive oxygen species generation. As such, the motion and application of the micromotors are achieved using a single excitation wavelength. To demonstrate the practicality of this system, curcumin was adsorbed to the micromotor surface and degradation of Rhodamine B was achieved with kinetic rates that were over twice as fast as the static micromotors. The upconversion luminescence was also used to track the motion of the micromotors from a single image frame, providing a convenient means to understand the trajectory of these systems. Together, this system provides a versatile approach to achieving light-driven motion while taking advantage of the potential applications of upconversion luminescence such as tracking and detection, sensing, nanothermometry, particle velocimetry, photodynamic therapy, and pollutant degradation.

Photothermal-driven micro/nanomotors: From structural design to potential applications

Micro/nanomotors (MNMs) that accomplish autonomous movement by transforming external energy into mechanical work are attractive cargo delivery vehicles. Among various propulsion mechanisms of MNMs, photothermal propulsion has gained considerable attention because of their unique advantages, such as remote, flexible, accurate, biocompatible, short response time, etc. Moreover, besides as a propulsion source, the light has been extensively investigated as an excitation source in bioimaging, photothermal therapy (PTT), photodynamic therapy (PDT) and so on. Furthermore, the geometric topology and morphology of MNMs have a tremendous impact on improving their performance in motion behavior under NIR light propulsion, environmental suitability and functional versatility. Hence, this review article provides a comprehensive overview of structural design principles and construction strategies of photothermal-driven MNMs, and their emerging nanobiomedical applications. Finally, we further provide an outlook towards prospects and challenges during the development of photothermal-driven MNMs in the future. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Photothermal-driven micro/nanomotors (MNMs) that are regarded as functional cargo delivery tools have gained considerable attention because of unique advantages in propulsion mechanisms, such as remote, flexible, accurate and fully biocompatible light manipulation and extremely short light response time. The geometric topology and morphology of MNMs have a tremendous impact on improving their performance in motion behavior under NIR light propulsion, environmental suitability and functional versatility of MNMs. There are no reports about the review focusing on photothermal-driven MNMs up to now. Herein, we systematically review the latest progress of photothermal-driven MNMs including design principle, fabrication strategy of various MNMs with different structures and nanobiomedical applications. Moreover, the summary and outlook on the development prospects and challenges of photothermal-driven MNMs are proposed, hoping to provide new ideas for the future design of photothermal-driven MNMs with efficient propulsion, multiple functions and high biocompatibility.

Untethered Micro/Nanorobots for Remote Sensing: Toward Intelligent Platform

Untethered micro/nanorobots that can wirelessly control their motion and deformation state have gained enormous interest in remote sensing applications due to their unique motion characteristics in various media and diverse functionalities. Researchers are developing micro/nanorobots as innovative tools to improve sensing performance and miniaturize sensing systems, enabling in situ detection of substances that traditional sensing methods struggle to achieve. Over the past decade of development, significant research progress has been made in designing sensing strategies based on micro/nanorobots, employing various coordinated control and sensing approaches. This review summarizes the latest developments on micro/nanorobots for remote sensing applications by utilizing the self-generated signals of the robots, robot behavior, microrobotic manipulation, and robot-environment interactions. Providing recent studies and relevant applications in remote sensing, we also discuss the challenges and future perspectives facing micro/nanorobots-based intelligent sensing platforms to achieve sensing in complex environments, translating lab research achievements into widespread real applications.

Intelligent sensing based on active micro/nanomotors

In the microscopic world, synthetic micro/nanomotors (MNMs) can convert a variety of energy sources into driving forces to help humans perform a number of complex tasks with greater ease and efficiency. These tiny machines have attracted tremendous attention in the field of drug delivery, minimally invasive surgery, in vivo sampling, and environmental management. By modifying their surface materials and functionalizing them with bioactive agents, these MNMs can also be transformed into dynamic micro/nano-biosensors that can detect biomolecules in real-time with high sensitivity. The extensive range of operations and uses combined with their minuscule size have opened up new avenues for tackling intricate analytical difficulties. Here, in this review, various driving methods are briefly introduced, followed by a focus on intelligent detection techniques based on MNMs. And we discuss the distinctive advantages, current issues, and challenges associated with MNM-based intelligent detection. It is believed that the future advancements of MNMs will greatly impact the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases.

Characterization and Application of Supramolecular Junctions

The convergence of supramolecular chemistry and single-molecule electronics offers a new perspective on supramolecular electronics, and provides a new avenue toward understanding and application of intermolecular charge transport at the molecular level. In this review, we will provide an overview of the advances in the characterization technique for the investigation of intermolecular charge transport, and summarize the experimental investigation of several non-covalent interactions, including π-π stacking interactions, hydrogen bonding, host-guest interactions and σ-σ interactions at the single-molecule level. We will also provide a perspective on supramolecular electronics and discuss the potential applications and future challenges.

Recent advances in lanthanide-doped up-conversion probes for theranostics

Up-conversion (or anti-Stokes) luminescence refers to the phenomenon whereby materials emit high energy, short-wavelength light upon excitation at longer wavelengths. Lanthanide-doped up-conversion nanoparticles (Ln-UCNPs) are widely used in biomedicine due to their excellent physical and chemical properties such as high penetration depth, low damage threshold and light conversion ability. Here, the latest developments in the synthesis and application of Ln-UCNPs are reviewed. First, methods used to synthesize Ln-UCNPs are introduced, and four strategies for enhancing up-conversion luminescence are analyzed, followed by an overview of the applications in phototherapy, bioimaging and biosensing. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of Ln-UCNPs are summarized.

Tailoring Functional Micromotors for Sensing

Micromotors are identified as a promising candidate in the field of sensing benefiting from their capacity of autonomous movement. Here, a review on the development of tailoring micromotors for sensing is presented, covering from their propulsion mechanisms and sensing strategies to applications. First, we concisely summarize the propulsion mechanism of micromotors involving fuel-based propulsion and fuel-free propulsion introducing their principles. Then, emphasis is laid to the sensing stratagems of the micromotors including speed-based sensing strategy, fluorescence-based sensing strategy, and other strategies. We listed typical examples of different sensing stratagems. After that, we introduce the applications of micromotors in sensing fields including environmental science, food safety, and biomedical fields. Finally, we discuss the challenges and prospects of the micromotors tailored for sensing. We believe that this comprehensive review can help readers to catch the research frontiers in the field of sensing and thus to burst out new ideas.

Light-driven microrobots: capture and transport of bacteria and microparticles in a fluid medium

The design of simple microrobotic systems with capabilities to address various applications like cargo transportation, as well as biological sample capture and manipulation in an individual unit, provides a novel route for designing advanced multifunctional microscale systems. Here, we demonstrate a facile approach to fabricate such multifunctional and fully controlled light-driven microrobots. The microrobots are titanium dioxide-silica Janus particles that are propelled in aqueous hydroquinone/benzoquinone fuel when illuminated by low-intensity UV light. The application of light provides control over the speed as well as activity of the microrobots. When modified with additional thin film coatings of nickel and gold, the microrobots exhibit the capturing and transportation of silica microparticles and E. coli bacteria. While transporting, they also show guided swimming under an external uniform magnetic field, which is interesting for deciding their moving path or the start/end positions. The fluorescent dye-based live/dead tests confirm that in the microrobot system almost no bacteria were harmed during the capturing or transportation. The simplistic design and steerable swimming with the ability to capture and transport are the important features of the microrobots. These features make them an ideal candidate for in vitro or lab-on-a-chip based studies, e.g., drug delivery, bacterial sensing, cell treatment, etc., where the capturing and transport of microscopic entities play a crucial role.

Shedding Light on Luminescent Janus Nanoparticles: From Synthesis to Photoluminescence and Applications

Luminescent Janus nanoparticles refer to a special category of Janus-based nanomaterials that not only exhibit dual-asymmetric surface nature but also attractive optical properties. The introduction of luminescence has endowed conventional Janus nanoparticles with many alluring light-responsive functionalities and broadens their applications in imaging, sensing, nanomotors, photo-based therapy, etc. The past few decades have witnessed significant achievements in this field. This review first summarizes well-established strategies to design and prepare luminescent Janus nanoparticles and then discusses optical properties of luminescent Janus nanoparticles based on downconversion and upconversion photoluminescence mechanisms. Various emerging applications of luminescent Janus nanoparticles are also introduced. Finally, opportunities and future challenges are highlighted with respect to the development of next-generation luminescent Janus nanoparticles with diverse applications.

Powering bioanalytical applications in biomedicine with light-responsive Janus micro-/nanomotors

Possessing both unique asymmetric structures and remote-controlled active movement, light-responsive Janus micro-/nanomotors offer the possibility of breaking through the limitations of traditional biomedicine, and have fascinated and inspired researchers. Despite many obstacles toward the clinical application, impressive progress of light-responsive Janus micro-/nanomotors for bioanalytical applications has been made over the past decades. In this review, we first briefly introduced several main light-driven Janus micro-/nanomotors, then focused on their typical bioanalytical applications such as biosensing, bioimaging, and theranostic. In the end, we summarized the remaining challenges of light-responsive Janus micro-/nanomotors in the practical application and also proposed potential solutions in the future.

Three-Dimensional Hierarchical HRP-MIL-100(Fe)@TiO2@Fe3O4 Janus Magnetic Micromotor as a Smart Active Platform for Detection and Degradation of Hydroquinone

A novel multifunctional Janus magnetic micromotor was designed and constructed by using MIL-100(Fe)@TiO₂@Fe₃O₄ multicore-shells modified with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) as a smart active platform to realize detection and degradation of hydroquinone (HQ). The obtained micromotor showed a unique three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical architecture with highly exposed active sites and could autonomously move at a speed of 140 ± 7.0 μm·s^-1 by O₂ bubbles generated from the catalytic decomposition of H₂O₂ fuel. Benefiting from the combination of active self-propulsive motion, high peroxidase-like activity, tuned heterojunctions with matching band structures, and a 3D hierarchical structure, an effective platform involving dynamically sensitive detection and quick removal of HQ from water was established by using the multifunctional HRP-integrated MIL-100(Fe)@TiO₂@Fe₃O₄ Janus micromotor. The proposed multifunctional Janus magnetic micromotor had advantages of simple and feasible fabrication, sensitive detection and effective photo-Fenton degradation of HQ in a wide pH range of 4-7, and magnetic recycling, revealing potential for environmental remediation applications.

Biomedical Micro-/Nanomotors: From Overcoming Biological Barriers to In Vivo Imaging

Self-propelled micro- and nanomotors (MNMs) have shown great potential for applications in the biomedical field, such as active targeted delivery, detoxification, minimally invasive diagnostics, and nanosurgery, owing to their tiny size, autonomous motion, and navigation capacities. To enter the clinic, biomedical MNMs request the biodegradability of their manufacturing materials, the biocompatibility of chemical fuels or externally physical fields, the capability of overcoming various biological barriers (e.g., biofouling, blood flow, blood-brain barrier, cell membrane), and the in vivo visual positioning for autonomous navigation. Herein, the recent advances of synthetic MNMs in overcoming biological barriers and in vivo motion-tracking imaging techniques are highlighted. The challenges and future research priorities are also addressed. With continued attention and innovation, it is believed that, in the future, biomedical MNMs will pave the way to improve the targeted drug delivery efficiency.

Classification of analytics, sensorics, and bioanalytics with polyelectrolyte multilayer capsules

Polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) capsules, constructed by LbL (layer-by-layer)-adsorbing polymers on sacrificial templates, have become important carriers due to multifunctionality of materials adsorbed on their surface or encapsulated into their interior. They have been also been used broadly used as analytical tools. Chronologically and traditionally, chemical analytics has been developed first, which has long been synonymous with all analytics. But it is not the only development. To the best of our knowledge, a summary of all advances including their classification is not available to date. Here, we classify analytics, sensorics, and biosensorics functionalities implemented with polyelectrolyte multilayer capsules and coated particles according to the respective stimuli and application areas. In this classification, three distinct categories are identified: (I) chemical analytics (pH; K⁺, Na⁺, and Pb²⁺ ion; oxygen; and hydrogen peroxide sensors and chemical sensing with surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)); (II) physical sensorics (temperature, mechanical properties and forces, and osmotic pressure); and (III) biosensorics and bioanalytics (fluorescence, glucose, urea, and protease biosensing and theranostics). In addition to this classification, we discuss also principles of detection using the above-mentioned stimuli. These application areas are expected to grow further, but the classification provided here should help (a) to realize the wealth of already available analytical and bioanalytical tools developed with capsules using inputs of chemical, physical, and biological stimuli and (b) to position future developments in their respective fields according to employed stimuli and application areas.
