A Ni(OH)2 nanopetals network for high-performance supercapacitors synthesized by immersing Ni nanofoam in water

Probing the Ni(OH)2 Precursor for LiNiO2 at the Atomic Scale: Insights into the Origin of Structural Defect in a Layered Cathode Active Material

In lithium ion batteries (LIBs), the layered cathode materials of composition LiNi_{1- x - y} Co_x Mn_y O₂  are critical for achieving high energy densities. A high nickel content (>80%) provides an attractive balance between high energy density, long lifetime, and low cost. Consequently, Ni-rich layered oxides cathode active materials (CAMs) are in high demand, and the importance of LiNiO₂ (LNO) as limiting case, is hence paramount. However, achieving perfect stoichiometry is a challenge resulting in various structural issues, which successively impact physicochemical properties and result in the capacity fade of LIBs. To better understand defect formation in LNO, the role of the Ni(OH)₂  precursor morphology in the synthesis of LNO requires in-depth investigation. By employing aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and precession electron diffraction, a direct observation of defects in the Ni(OH)₂  precursor preparedis reported and the ex situ structural evolution from the precursor to the end product is monitored. During synthesis, the layered Ni(OH)₂  structure transforms to partially lithiated (non-layered) NiO and finally to layered LNO. The results suggest that the defects observed in commercially relevant CAMs originate to a large extent from the precursors, hence care must be taken in tuning the co-precipitation parameters to synthesize defect-free Ni-rich layered oxides CAMs.

Co3O4 Nanopetals Grown on the Porous CuO Network for the Photocatalytic Degradation

Designing a novel photocatalytic composite for the efficient degradation of organic dyes remains a serious challenge. Herein, the multi-layered Co₃O₄@NP-CuO photocatalyst with unique features, i.e., the self-supporting, hierarchical porous network as well as the construction of heterojunction between Co₃O₄ and CuO, are synthesized by dealloying-electrodeposition and subsequent thermal treatment techniques. It is found that the interwoven ultrathin Co₃O₄ nanopetals evenly grow on the nanoporous CuO network (Co₃O₄@NP-CuO). The three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical porous structure for the catalyst provides more surface area to act as active sites and facilitates the absorption of visible light in the photodegradation reaction. Compared with the commercial CuO and Co₃O₄ powders, the newly designed Co₃O₄@NP-CuO composite exhibits superior photodegradation performance for RhB. The enhanced performance is mainly due to the construction of heterojunction of Co₃O₄/CuO, greatly promoting the efficient carrier separation for photocatalysis. Furthermore, the possible photocatalytic mechanism is analyzed in detail. This work provides a promising strategy for the fabrication of a new controllable heterojunction to improve photocatalytic activity.

A Review of Supercapacitors: Materials Design, Modification, and Applications

Supercapacitors (SCs) have received much interest due to their enhanced electrochemical performance, superior cycling life, excellent specific power, and fast charging–discharging rate. The energy density of SCs is comparable to batteries; however, their power density and cyclability are higher by several orders of magnitude relative to batteries, making them a flexible and compromising energy storage alternative, provided a proper design and efficient materials are used. This review emphasizes various types of SCs, such as electrochemical double-layer capacitors, hybrid supercapacitors, and pseudo-supercapacitors. Furthermore, various synthesis strategies, including sol-gel, electro-polymerization, hydrothermal, co-precipitation, chemical vapor deposition, direct coating, vacuum filtration, de-alloying, microwave auxiliary, in situ polymerization, electro-spinning, silar, carbonization, dipping, and drying methods, are discussed. Furthermore, various functionalizations of SC electrode materials are summarized. In addition to their potential applications, brief insights into the recent advances and associated problems are provided, along with conclusions. This review is a noteworthy addition because of its simplicity and conciseness with regard to SCs, which can be helpful for researchers who are not directly involved in electrochemical energy storage.

In Situ Formation of Nano Ni-Co Oxyhydroxide Enables Water Oxidation Electrocatalysts Durable at High Current Densities

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) limits the energy efficiency of electrocatalytic systems due to the high overpotential symptomatic of poor reaction kinetics; this problem worsens over time if the performance of the OER electrocatalyst diminishes during operation. Here, a novel synthesis of nanocrystalline Ni-Co-Se using ball milling at cryogenic temperature is reported. It is discovered that, by anodizing the Ni-Co-Se structure during OER, Se ions leach out of the original structure, allowing water molecules to hydrate Ni and Co defective sites, and the nanoparticles to evolve into an active Ni-Co oxyhydroxide. This transformation is observed using operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy, with the findings confirmed using density functional theory calculations. The resulting electrocatalyst exhibits an overpotential of 279 mV at 0.5 A cm^-2 and 329 mV at 1 A cm^-2 and sustained performance for 500 h. This is achieved using low mass loadings (0.36 mg cm^-2 ) of cobalt. Incorporating the electrocatalyst in an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer yields a current density of 1 A cm^-2 at 1.75 V for 95 h without decay in performance. When the electrocatalyst is integrated into a CO₂ -to-ethylene electrolyzer, a record-setting full cell voltage of 3 V at current density 1 A cm^-2 is achieved.

Harnessing Electrostatic Interactions for Enhanced Conductivity in Metal-Organic Frameworks

The poor electrical conductivity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been a stumbling block for its applications in many important fields. Therefore, exploring a simple and effective strategy to regulate the conductivity of MOFs is highly desired. Herein, anionic guest molecules are incorporated inside the pores of a cationic MOF (PFC-8), which increases its conductivity by five orders of magnitude while maintaining the original porosity. In contrast, the same operation in an isoreticular neutral framework (PFC-9) does not bring such a significant change. Theoretical studies reveal that the guest molecules, stabilized inside pores through electrostatic interaction, play the role of electron donors as do in semiconductors, bringing in an analogous n-type semiconductor mechanism for electron conduction. Therefore, we demonstrate that harnessing electrostatic interaction provides a new way to regulate the conductivity of MOFs without necessarily altering the original porous structure. This strategy would greatly broaden MOFs' application potential in electronic and optoelectronic technologies.

Electrodeposition of NiSn-rGO Composite Coatings from Deep Eutectic Solvents and Their Physicochemical Characterization

The present work describes, for the first time, the electrodeposition of NiSn alloy/reduced graphene oxide composite coatings (NiSn-rGO) obtained under pulse current electrodeposition conditions from deep eutectic solvents (choline chloride: ethylene glycol eutectic mixtures) containing well-dispersed GO nanosheets. The successful incorporation of the carbon-based material into the metallic matrix has been confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and cross-section scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A decrease in the crystallite size of the coating was evidenced when graphene oxide was added to the electrolyte. Additionally, the topography and the electrical properties of the materials were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The corrosion behavior in 0.5 M NaCl solution was analyzed through potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods for different immersion periods, up to 336 h, showing a slightly better corrosion performance as compared to pure NiSn alloy.

The Effect of an External Magnetic Field on the Electrochemical Capacitance of Nanoporous Nickel for Energy Storage

This work investigates the effect of a magnetic field on the electrochemical performance of nanoporous nickel (np-Ni). We first compare the electrochemical capacitance of np-Ni electrodes, which were prepared using the chemical dealloying strategy under different magnetic flux densities (B = 0, 500 mT). Our experimental data show that np-Ni₅₀₀ prepared under an external magnetic field of 500 mT exhibits a much better electrochemical performance, in comparison with that (np-Ni₀) prepared without applying a magnetic field. Furthermore, the specific capacitance of the np-Ni₀ electrode could be further enhanced when we increase the magnetic flux densities from 0 T to 500 mT, whereas the np-Ni₅₀₀ electrode exhibits a stable electrochemical performance under different magnetic flux densities (B = 0 mT, 300 mT, 500 mT). This could be attributed to the change in the electrochemical impedance of the np-Ni₀ electrode induced by an external magnetic field. Our work thus offers an alternative method to enhance the electrochemical energy storage of materials.
