Cross metathesis of unsaturated epoxides for the synthesis of polyfunctional building blocks

Regio- and Stereoselective Homologation of 1,2-Bis(Boronic Esters): Stereocontrolled Synthesis of 1,3-Diols and Sch 725674

1,2-Bis(boronic esters), derived from the enantioselective diboration of terminal alkenes, can be selectively homologated at the primary boronic ester by using enantioenriched primary/secondary lithiated carbamates or benzoates to give 1,3-bis(boronic esters), which can be subsequently oxidized to the corresponding secondary-secondary and secondary-tertiary 1,3-diols with full stereocontrol. The transformation was applied to a concise total synthesis of the 14-membered macrolactone, Sch 725674. The nine-step synthetic route also features a novel desymmetrizing enantioselective diboration of a divinyl carbinol derivative and high-yielding late-stage cross-metathesis and Yamaguchi macrolactonization reactions.

Stereocontrolled regeneration of olefins from epoxides

Through treatment with NaI and trifluoroacetic anhydride, which presumably forms trifluoroacetyl iodide in situ, epoxides can be converted to olefins. This reaction now has been shown to tolerate remote olefins without loss of their individual stereochemistry. A reaction sequence involving regiospecific epoxidation of an isoprenoid alcohol, conversion of the alcohol to an azide, and cycloaddition with an acetylene, followed by conversion of the epoxide back to the original olefin, has allowed stereocontrolled preparation of triazole bisphosphonates with a farnesyl or a geranylgeranyl substituent. This strategy may be applicable selective protection of an alkene in other polyolefins, including substrates for metathesis reactions.

One-pot synthesis and postpolymerization functionalization of cyclic carbonate/epoxide-difunctional polycarbonates prepared by regioselective diepoxide/CO2 copolymerization

Polycarbonate with cyclic carbonate and epoxide-difunctional groups is synthesized via a copolymerization of 4-VCHO and CO₂ in one-step, which possess high T_g and afford a versatile platform for the post-functionalziation.
