Deuterium-enriched water ties planet-forming disks to comets and protostars

Water is a fundamental molecule in the star and planet formation process, essential for catalysing the growth of solid material and the formation of planetesimals within disks^1,2. However, the water snowline and the HDO:H₂O ratio within proto-planetary disks have not been well characterized because water only sublimates at roughly 160 K (ref. ³), meaning that most water is frozen out onto dust grains and that the water snowline radii are less than 10 AU (astronomical units)^4,5. The sun-like protostar V883 Ori (M_* = 1.3 M_⊙)⁶ is undergoing an accretion burst⁷, increasing its luminosity to roughly 200 L_⊙ (ref. ⁸), and previous observations suggested that its water snowline is 40-120 AU in radius^6,9,10. Here we report the direct detection of gas phase water (HDO and [Formula: see text]) from the disk of V883 Ori. We measure a midplane water snowline radius of approximately 80 AU, comparable to the scale of the Kuiper Belt, and detect water out to a radius of roughly 160 AU. We then measure the HDO:H₂O ratio of the disk to be (2.26 ± 0.63) × 10^-3. This ratio is comparable to those of protostellar envelopes and comets, and exceeds that of Earth's oceans by 3.1σ. We conclude that disks directly inherit water from the star-forming cloud and this water becomes incorporated into large icy bodies, such as comets, without substantial chemical alteration.

Relationship between CH3OD Abundance and Temperature in the Orion KL Nebula

The relative abundances of singly deuterated methanol isotopologues, [CH₂DOH]/[CH₃OD], in star-forming regions deviate from the statistically expected ratio of 3. In Orion KL, the nearest high-mass star-forming region to Earth, the singly deuterated methanol ratio is about 1, and the cause for this observation has been explored through theory for nearly three decades. We present high-angular resolution observations of Orion KL using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array to map small-scale changes in CH₃OD column density across the nebula, which provide a new avenue to examine the deuterium chemistry during star and planet formation. By considering how CH₃OD column densities vary with temperature, we find evidence of chemical processes that can significantly alter the observed gas-phase column densities. The astronomical data are compared with existing theoretical work and support D–H exchange between CH₃OH and heavy water (i.e., HDO and D₂O) at methanol’s hydroxyl site in the icy mantles of dust grains. The enhanced CH₃OD column densities are localized to the Hot Core-SW region, a pattern that may be linked to the coupled evolution of ice mantle chemistry and star formation in giant molecular clouds. This work provides new perspectives on deuterated methanol chemistry in Orion KL and informs considerations that may guide future theoretical, experimental, and observational work.

Theoretical Distribution of the Ammonia Binding Energy at Interstellar Icy Grains: A New Computational Framework

The binding energies (BE) of molecules on the interstellar grains are crucial in the chemical evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM). Both temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) laboratory experiments and quantum chemistry computations have often provided, so far, only single values of the BE for each molecule. This is a severe limitation, as the ices enveloping the grain mantles are structurally amorphous, giving rise to a manifold of possible adsorption sites, each with different BEs. However, the amorphous ice nature prevents the knowledge of structural details, hindering the development of a common accepted atomistic icy model. In this work, we propose a computational framework that closely mimics the formation of the interstellar grain mantle through a water by water accretion. On that grain, an unbiased random (but well reproducible) positioning of the studied molecule is then carried out. Here we present the test case of NH₃, a ubiquitous species in the molecular ISM. We provide the BE distribution computed by a hierarchy approach, using the semiempirical xTB-GFN2 as a low-level method to describe the whole icy cluster in combination with the B97D3 DFT functional as a high-level method on the local zone of the NH₃ interaction. The final ZPE-corrected BE is computed at the ONIOM(DLPNO-CCSD(T)//B97D3:xTB-GFN2) level, ensuring the best cost/accuracy ratio. The main peak of the predicted NH₃ BE distribution is in agreement with experimental TPD and computed data in the literature. A second broad peak at very low BE values is also present, which has never been detected before. It may provide the solution to a longstanding puzzle about the presence of gaseous NH₃ also observed in cold ISM objects.

Quantification of the Role of Chemical Desorption in Molecular Clouds

ConspectusDark molecular clouds have low temperatures of approximately 10 K and experience very little UV irradiation. These clouds are the birthplace of new stars and consist of gas and dust particles. The latter can act as a meeting place to facilitate surface chemistry to form saturated molecules such as formaldehyde, methyl formate, and dimethyl ether. These complex organic molecules or COMs become encapsulated in the ice that forms on the dust grains, and these ices are the precursor for cometary ices and other icy bodies. They likely played a role in bringing material to the early earth.Although these COMs are likely formed on the surfaces of dust grains, several of them have been detected in the gas phase. This means that they have desorbed from the grain under these cold, dark conditions where thermal desorption and photodesorption are negligible. It has been speculated that reactive, or chemical, desorption is responsible for the high gas-phase abundance. After a surface reaction, its products might be vibrationally, translationally, and/or rotationally excited. Dissipation of the excess energy to translational energy can briefly increase the desorption rate, leading to chemical desorption. Astrochemical modellers have added terms to their rate equations to account for this effect. These terms, however, have had little experimental or theoretical verification.In this Account, we use classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to give adsorbed molecules a fixed amount of energy as a proxy for excess energy and to record whether this leads to desorption. The excitation energy can be varied freely while keeping all other variables constant. This allows for the study of trends rather than being limited to a single reaction and a single system. The focus is on the dependence of the chemical desorption on the excitation energy, excitation type, and binding energy. Rotational and vibrational excitation was explicitly taken into account. An analytical expression for the chemical desorption probability was obtained in this way. It depends on the binding energy and reaction enthalpy. This expression was then implemented in a gas-grain astrochemical code to simulate the chemical evolution of a dark molecular cloud, and the results were compared against observational abundances of COMs in three different molecular clouds. The results with our new expression based on the MD simulations show good agreement for all species except H2CO, which has both gas-phase and surface-formation routes. This is a significant improvement over models without chemical desorption or with other expressions for chemical desorption, as frequently used by other authors. It is encouraging to see that a general description with a firmer theoretical basis leads to a significant improvement. Understanding chemical desorption can help to explain the unexpectedly high gas-phase abundance of some COMs, and chemical desorption also provides a link between the gas phase and the ice mantle, and its understanding might help in creating a diagnostic tool to learn more about the ice composition.

Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of water ice porosity: extrapolations of deposition parameters from the laboratory to interstellar space

Using an off-lattice kinetic Monte Carlo model we reproduce experimental laboratory trends in the density of amorphous solid water (ASW) for varied deposition angle, rate and surface temperature. Extrapolation of the model to conditions appropriate to protoplanetary disks and interstellar dark clouds indicate that these ices may be less porous than laboratory ices.
