Abstract
Ethnopharmacological relevance As a representative classical prescription, Sijunzi decoction has powerful therapeutic effects on spleen-stomach qi insufficiency. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic, diffuse, and non-specifically inflammatory disorder, the etiology of which still remains unclear. In the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) perspective, splenic asthenia is the primary cause of UC. Based on this, Sijunzi decoction has been extensively used in TCM clinical practice to alleviate UC in recent years. However, the pharmacological mechanism of Sijunzi decoction in modern medicine is still not completely clear, which limits its clinical application. Aim of the study The purpose of this study was to investigate the Sijunzi decoction's curative effect on acute UC mice and probe into its potential pharmacological mechanism. Materials and methods The UC mouse model was set up by freely ingesting a 3% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) solution. The relieving role of Sijunzi decoction on UC in mice was analyzed by evaluating the changes in clinical parameters, colon morphology, histopathology, inflammatory factor content, intestinal epithelial barrier protein expression level, and gut microbiota balance state. Finally, multivariate statistical analysis was conducted to elucidate the relationship between inflammatory factors, intestinal epithelial barrier proteins, and gut microbiota. Results First, the research findings revealed that Sijunzi decoction could visibly ease the clinical manifestation of UC, lower the DAI score, and attenuate colonic damage. Moreover, Sijunzi decoction could also significantly inhibit IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α while increasing occludin and ZO-1 expression levels. Subsequently, further studies showed that Sijunzi decoction could remodel gut microbiota homeostasis. Sijunzi decoction was beneficial in regulating the levels of Alistipes, Akkermansia, Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group, and other bacteria. Finally, multivariate statistical analysis demonstrated that key gut microbes were closely associated with inflammatory factors and intestinal epithelial barrier proteins. Conclusion Sijunzi decoction can significantly prevent and treat UC. Its mechanism is strongly associated with the improvement of inflammation and intestinal epithelial barrier damage by regulating the gut microbiota.

Abstract
Compound Chinese medicine (F1) is a traditional prescription in Chinese medicine that is commonly used to treat spleen deficiency diarrhea (SDD). It has demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in clinical practice. However, the precise mechanism by which it exerts its antidiarrheal effect is still unclear. This study aimed at investigating the antidiarrheal efficacy and mechanism of F1 on senna-induced secretory diarrhea (SDD). Senna was utilized to induce the development of a mouse model of senna-induced secretory diarrhea (SDD) in order to observe the rate of diarrhea, diarrhea index, blood biochemistry, and histopathological changes in the small intestine. Additionally, the levels of sodium and hydrogen exchange protein 3 (NHE3) and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The impact of F1 on the senna-induced SDD mouse models was evaluated by monitoring changes in the gut microbiota through 16S rRNA (V3-V4) sequencing. The results demonstrated that F1, a traditional Chinese medicine, effectively increased the body weight of SDD mice and reduced the incidence of diarrhea and diarrhea index. Additionally, F1 restored liver and kidney function, reduced the infiltration of inflammatory cells in intestinal tissue, and promoted the growth of intestinal villi. Furthermore, F1 was found to enhance the expression of NHE3 and SCFAs. It also increased the abundance of Firmicutes and Lactobacillus species, while decreasing the abundance of Proteobacteria and Shigella.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Postoperative non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients frequently encounter a deteriorated quality of life (QOL), disturbed immune response, and disordered homeostasis. Si-Jun-Zi Decoction (SJZD), a well-known traditional Chinese herbal formula, is frequently employed in clinical application for many years. Exploration is underway to investigate the potential therapeutic effect of SJZD for treating postoperative NSCLC. OBJECTIVE To assess the efficacy of SJZD on QOLs, hematological parameters, and regulations of gut microbiota in postoperative NSCLC patients. METHODS A prospective observational cohort study was conducted, enrolling 65 postoperative NSCLC patients between May 10, 2020 and March 15, 2021 in Yueyang Hospital, with 33 patients in SJZD group and 32 patients in control (CON) group. The SJZD group comprised of patients who received standard treatments and the SJZD decoction, while the CON group consisted of those only underwent standard treatments. The treatment period was 4 weeks. The primary outcome was QOL. The secondary outcomes involved serum immune cell and inflammation factor levels, safety, and alterations in gut microbiota. RESULTS SJZD group showed significant enhancements in cognitive functioning (P = .048) at week 1 and physical functioning (P = .019) at week 4. Lung cancer-specific symptoms included dyspnea (P = .001), coughing (P = .008), hemoptysis (P = .034), peripheral neuropathy (P = .019), and pain (arm or shoulder, P = .020, other parts, P = .019) eased significantly in the fourth week. Anemia indicators such as red blood cell count (P = .003 at week 1, P = .029 at week 4) and hemoglobin (P = .016 at week 1, P = .048 at week 4) were significantly elevated by SJZD. SJZD upregulated blood cell cluster differentiation (CD)3+ (P = .001 at week 1, P < .001 at week 4), CD3+CD4+ (P = .012 at week 1), CD3+CD8+ (P = .027 at week 1), CD19+ (P = .003 at week 4), increased anti-inflammatory interleukin (IL)-10 (P = .004 at week 1, P = .003 at week 4), and decreased pro-inflammatory IL-8 (P = .004 at week 1, p = .005 at week 4). Analysis of gut microbiota indicated that SJZD had a significant impact on increasing microbial abundance and diversity, enriching probiotic microbes, and regulating microbial biological functions. CONCLUSIONS SJZD appears to be an effective and safe treatment for postoperative NSCLC patients. As a preliminary observational study, this study provides a foundation for further research.

Abstract
Purpose This study was conducted to explore the mechanism of Sijunzi Decoction (SJZ) in the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC). Methods The study aimed to investigate the active components and targets of SJZ in the treatment of UC by screening databases such as TCMSP, GeneCards, OMIM, Distinct, TTD, and Drugbank. An online Venn tool, Cytoscape 3.7.2, and Autodock Tools were used to analyze the components and targets. The study also used a mouse model of UC to further investigate the effects of SJZ. HE staining, immunofluorescence, ELISA, qPCR, and Western blot were used to detect various indices. Results Eighty-three active components and 112 action targets were identified from SJZ, including 67 targets for treating UC-related NETs. The five core targets identified were AKT1, JUN, IL1B, PTGS2, and TNF, and molecular docking studies indicated that the five targets were well-docked with ginsenoside Rh2, isoflavones, and formononetin. Animal experiments demonstrated that SJZ could alleviate various parameters such as weight, colon length, spleen index, disease activity index, and intestinal pathology of the UC mice. Immunofluorescence and Western blot showed that SJZ could reduce the expression of IL1B and TNF in intestinal neutrophils while increasing the expression of Occludin. Cellular immunofluorescence suggests that SJZ can reduce the expression of TNF and IL1B in NETs. The qPCR results also suggested that SJZ could inhibit TNF signal. Furthermore, ELISA results suggested that SJZ could inhibit the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6) while promoting the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10, IL-37, TGF-β). Conclusion SJZ treats UC by reducing the content of intestinal NETs, with primary targets on the NETs being IL1B and TNFand suppress TNF signal. The practical components of SJZ may be ginsenoside Rh2, isoflavones, and formononetin.

Abstract
Objectives Ulcerative colitis (UC) remains an enduring, idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease marked by persistent mucosal inflammation initiating from the rectum and extending in a proximal direction. An ethanol extract of Periplaneta americana L., namely Kangfuxin (KFX), has a significant historical presence in Traditional Chinese Medicine and has been broadly utilized in clinical practice for the treatment of injury. Here, we aimed to determine the effect of KFX on 2,4,6-trinitro'benzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced UC in Sprague-Dawley rats. Materials and Methods We established the UC model by TNBS/ethanol method. Then, the rats were subject to KFX (50, 100, 200 mg/kg/day) for 2 weeks by intragastric gavage. The body weight, disease activity index (DAI), colonic mucosal injury index (CMDI), and histopathological score were evaluated. The colonic tissue interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), IL-10, transforming growth factor-1 (TGF-β1), and epidermal growth factor (EGF) were determined by Elisa. To study T-lymphocyte subsets, flow cytometry was performed. In addition, the expression level of NF-κB p65 was evaluated by immunohistochemistry and western blot analysis. Results Compared with the TNBS-triggered colitis rats, the treatment of rats with KFX significantly increased the body weight, and decreased DAI, CMDI, and histopathological score. Also, KFX elicited a reduction in the secretion of colonic pro-inflammatory cytokines, namely IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α, concomitant with up-regulation of IL-10, TGF-β1, and EGF levels. Upon KFX treatment, the CD3+CD4+/CD3+CD8+ ratio in the spleen decreased, while the CD3+CD8+ subset and the CD3+CD4+CD25+/CD3+CD4+ ratio demonstrated an increase. In addition, the expression of NF-κB p65 in the colon was decreased. Conclusion KFX effectively suppresses TNBS-induced colitis by inhibiting the activation of NF-κB p65 and regulating the ratio of CD4+/CD8+.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to identify the main medicinal active components of Panax ginseng (P. ginseng) in the compatibility environment of clinical application. For this purpose, the anti-inflammatory ingredients of P. ginseng were investigated based on its therapeutic effect in Sijunzi Decoction (SJD) which is a widely used traditional Chinese formula. Methods The fingerprints of 10 batches of SJD consisting of different sources of P. ginseng were established by UPLC technique to investigate the chemical components. At the same time, the anti-inflammatory effects of these components were evaluated by dextran sulfate sodium-induced ulcerative colitis mouse model. Grey relational analysis was applied to explore the correlation degree between fingerprints and anti-inflammatory effects in SJD. Lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW264.7 murine macrophages were established to evaluate the anti-inflammatory action of the screened effective substances of P. ginseng. Results According to grey relational analysis, notoginsenoside R1, ginsenoside Rg2 and ginsenoside Rb3 of P. ginseng were the major anti-inflammatory contributions in SJD. They had been proven to be closely associated with the anti-inflammatory process of SJD and displayed a close effect compared with SJD by LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 murine macrophages. Conclusion Our work provides a general strategy for exploring the pharmacological ingredients of P. ginseng in traditional Chinese formulas which is beneficial for establishing the quality standards of traditional herbs in traditional Chinese medicine prescription based on their clinical therapeutic effect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic nonspecific inflammatory disease that causes a heavy burden and lacks effective treatments. Chinese herbal medicine prescriptions (CHMPs), which are characterized by a synergistic usage of herbs, are widely used in the management of IBD. The molecular mechanisms of action of CHMP are still ambiguous as the canonical "one-compound-one-target" approach has difficulty describing the dynamic bioreactions among CHMP objects. It seems more flexible to define the holism of CHMP for IBD by employing high-throughput analysis. However, studies that discuss the development of CHMP in treating IBD in a holistic view are still lacking. PURPOSE This review appraised preclinical and clinical research to fully describe the anti-IBD capacity of CHMPs and discussed CHMPs' holistic characteristics that can contribute to better management of IBD. METHODS & RESULTS We screened clinical and preclinical references of CHMP being used as treatments for IBD. We discussed the complexity of IBD and the development of CHMP to present the sophistication of CHMP treatments. To describe the clinical effectiveness of CHMPs against IBD, we performed an umbrella review of CHMP-associated META analyses, in which 1174 records were filtered down to 12 references. Then, we discussed 14 kinds of CHMPs that had a long history of use and analyzed their mechanisms of action. Representative herbs were employed to provide a subordinate explanation for the whole prescription. As holism is the dominant characteristic of CHMPs, we explored applications of CHMPs for IBD with the help of omics, gut microbiome, and network pharmacology, which are potential approaches to a dynamic figure of bioactions of CHMPs. CONCLUSION This review is the first to discuss the potential of CHMPs to manage IBD in a holistic context and will provide inspiring explanations for CHMP applications for further product transformation and application to other diseases.

Abstract
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with a low cure rate. Periplaneta americana is a traditional American Cockroach and reportedly has potential therapeutic roles for UC treatment; however, its mechanisms remain unclear. To address this, we investigated the therapeutic effects and underlying molecular mechanisms of Ento-A, a Periplaneta americana extract, in a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced chronic and recurrent UC mouse model. Ento-A treatment decreased pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion, disease activity index (DAI), colon mucosa damage index (CMDI), histopathological scores (HS), and increased colon length. Additionally, Ento-A effectively increased interleukin-4 (IL-4), and forkhead transcription factor protein 3 (Foxp3) expression levels, while it abated interferon-γ (IFN-γ) and IL-17 levels in spleen lymphocytes. Conversely, in mesenteric lymph nodes, IL-4 and Foxp3 expression were decreased, while IFN-γ and IL-17 expression was increased. Furthermore, Ento-A blocked p-PI3K, p-AKT,*and p-NF-κB activation. In conclusion, Ento-A improved UC symptoms and exerted therapeutic effects by regulating immune responses and inhibiting PI3K/AKT/NF-κB signaling.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sijunzi decoction (SJZD), reported in "Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang" of the Song dynasty, is the basic prescription for the treatment of spleen deficiency syndrome (SDS) in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It is composed of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Atractylodisa Macricephalae Rhizoma, Poria and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata Cum Melle. PURPOSE This study sought to explore the effects of different components in SJZD (including nonpolysaccharide NPS and active polysaccharide S-3) on SDS rats and their underlying mechanisms. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS First, SDS model rats were established by reserpine injection and then treated with SJZD, NPS and S-3. To clarify their effect on GI motility and immune function, the gastrointestinal (GI) hormone levels in rat serum and their related receptor expressions in rat intestine were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and western blot, and the intestinal T lymphocyte expression were quantified by flow cytometry. The levels of SCFAs in feces and serum were measured by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and the gut microbiota composition was determined by 16S RNA sequencing. Furthermore, pseudo-germ-free (pGF) and gut microbiota dysbiosis (GMD) model rats were established to verify the key role of the gut microbiota in the treatment of SDS with SJZD, NPS and S-3. RESULTS SJZD has a stronger therapeutic effect on intestinal immune and GI hormone secretion in SDS rats, while the efficacy of NPS and S-3 showed slight differences. NPS mainly regulated the secretion of GI hormones in SDS rats and directly improved intestinal immunity by increasing the expression of T lymphocyte cells, while S-3 mainly enhanced intestinal immune function by increasing the expression of T lymphocyte cells and repairing the intestinal barrier in both direct and indirect ways. Additionally, experiments in pGF and GMD rats have proven that the immune-enhancing effects of SJZD, NPS, and S-3 on SDS rats and the regulation of GI hormones of S-3 are related to modulation of the gut microbiota composition, while the regulation of GI hormones by SJZD and NPS is not completely dependent on this modulation. In particular, Lactobacillus, SMB53, Blautia, Dorea, Collinsella and Adlercreutzia were significantly modulated by SJZD, and 3 genera (including Lactobacillus, Dorea and SMB53) were also remarkably regulated by NPS. S-3 significantly increased the abundance of Butyricimonas and Collinsella, which were different from altered genera in the SJZD group. CONCLUSION This study uncovered that NPS and S-3 are inseparable effective substances for SJZD in the treatment of SDS rats, in which NPS mainly improves intestinal motility dysfunction and S-3 mainly enhances intestinal immunity. The mediation effect of the gut microbiota is extremely important, but the regulating effect of NPS on gastrointestinal hormones has nothing to do with the gut microbiota.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to determine the effect of kangfuxin liquid (KFXL) on inflammatory response, and its underlying mechanism in treating acute ulcerative colitis (UC) in mice induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS). MATERIAL AND METHODS Mice were provided drinking water containing DSS (3%) for 7 days to induce acute enteritis. The mice were divided into 6 groups: a control group, a DSS-induced (vehicle) group, a sulfasalazine (SASP) group, and low-, medium-, and high-dose kangfuxin liquid groups. Disease activity index (DAI), colon mucosa damage index (CMDI), histopathological score (HS), and organ index were monitored daily. The levels of interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), interleukin-10 (IL-10) in serum and interleukin-17 (IL-17) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) in colon tissue were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Flow cytometry was used to assess the changes of T lymphocyte subsets in spleens of mice to evaluate the therapeutic effect of drugs on acute UC in mice. RESULTS Different doses of kangfuxin liquid reduced the DAI, CMDI, and HS scores (P<0.01 or P<0.05) of acute UC mice, reduced the level of IL-1ß and IL-17 in serum, increased the expression of IL-10 in serum and EGF in colon tissue, increased the number of CD3⁺ T cells, and decreased the level of CD4⁺ T cells and the ratio of CD4⁺/CD8⁺. CONCLUSIONS Kangfuxin liquid has a therapeutic effect on DSS-induced acute UC in mice, and its mechanism of action may be associated with regulating immune function and reducing intestinal inflammatory response.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic non-specific intestinal inflammatory disease with unknown etiology. In recent years, the global incidence has been increasing. Sijunzi decoction (SJZD) is a traditional Chinese medicine that has been used for treatment of other diseases in previous studies as it has no side effects and it has a pharmacological effect in gastrointestinal function, immune system, ulcers, and tissue repair. METHODS PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, GeenMedical, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Sci-tech Journals full-text Database, Chinese Biomedical Database, and Chinese Science Citation Database were searched to screen the related literatures of "ulcerative colitis" and "Jiawei Sijunzi decoction". The research data extracted from above studies was analyzed by Review Manager 5.3 and Stata14.2 software. RESULTS This systematic review and meta-analysis will evaluate the efficacy and safety of Jiawei SJZD in the treatment of UC and provide effective evidence for clinical use. CONCLUSION In this study, the published evidence of modified SJZD in the treatment of UC was systematically summarized and evaluated, so that it can be better applied in clinic. Abstract
Background Modified Sijunzi decoction (SJZD) has been used to treat ulcerative colitis (UC) in remission. However, more rigorous clinical trials are necessary to evaluate its effectiveness. Therefore, a series of single-case randomised controlled trials (N-of-1 trials) is proposed to compare the efficacy of modified SJZD with mesalazine for treating UC in remission. Methods This is a single-site, hospital-based, double-blind N-of-1 trial for 10 single subjects. Three cycles of N-of-1 trials are planned. There are two treatment periods in each cycle. Modified SJZD combined with mesalazine placebo or mesalazine combined with modified SJZD placebo will be randomised during each 8-week treatment period. There is no washout period in the study. Subjects will be selected by the researcher strictly in accordance with the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Discussion Paired t tests and mixed-effect models will be used to analyse the visual analogue scale (VAS) for clinical symptoms and the quality of life questionnaire responses. The findings will be interpreted with caution. We anticipate that the results will show that modified SJZD is effective for patients with UC in remission. Abstract
Objective: Whether to conduct Sijunzi decoction combined with enteral nutrition (SJZD/EN) in patients with gastric cancer (GC) remains controversial. This study was aimed to systematically analyze the efficacy and safety of SJZD/EN in patients with gastric cancer.Methods: We performed searches in PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Scientific Journal Database (VIP), Wanfang database, and Chinese Biomedicine Literature Database (SinoMed) to identify relevant literature comparing SJZD/EN with conventional EN for GC patients. The analysis was carried out with RevMan 5.3.Results: A total of 10 randomized controlled trials (688 patients) were included. Meta-analysis showed a significantly shorter time to flatus (t/h) (MD, -9.45; 95% CI, -10.76 to -8.13; p < 0.00001), a shorter length of hospital stay (t/d) (MD, -5.22; 95% CI, -7.46 to -2.99; p < 0.00001), and a lower incidence of postoperative complications (%) (OR, 0.14; 95% CI, 0.03-0.64; p = 0.01) in the SJZD/EN group than the EN group. Compared with the EN, the SJZD/EN group had a higher level of albumin(g/L) (MD, 2.59; 95% CI, 1.90-3.28; p < 0.00001), prealbumin (mg/L) (MD, 36.81; 95% CI, 13.41-60.20; p = 0.002), transferrin (g/L) (MD, 0.19; 95% CI, 0.10-0.28; p < 0.0001), immunoglobulin G (g/L) (MD, 2.61; 95% CI, 2.12-3.09; p < 0.00001), immunoglobulin A (g/L) (MD, 0.38; 95% CI, 0.31-0.45, p < 0.00001), immunoglobulin M (g/L) (MD, 0.31; 95% CI, 0.22-0.41; p < 0.00001), CD3+ (%) (MD, 6.73; 95% CI, 3.48-9.98; p < 0.0001), CD4+ (%) (MD, 4.32; 95% CI, 3.30-5.33; p < 0.00001), and CD4+/CD8+ (MD, 0.20; 95% CI, 0.11-0.28; p < 0.00001).Conclusions: Sijunzi decoction combined with enteral nutrition appears to have efficacy and safety for gastric cancer.

Abstract
Background: Modified Si–Jun–Zi–Tang (MSJZT), a multi-herb formulation, is frequently used in traditional Chinese medicine for patients during the remission stage of asthma. However, the pharmacological basis underlying the effects of MSJZT on asthma has yet to be elucidated. This study aims at evaluating the anti-asthmatic effects of MSJZT and investigating its possible mechanism. Methods: A chronic murine model of asthma was established by sensitization and repeated challenge with ovalbumin (OVA) in female BALB/c mice, followed with oral administration of MSJZT during remission, and then mouse were re-challenged by OVA. The chemical profile of MSJZT was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. The characteristic features of allergic asthma, including airway hyperreactivity, histopathology, cytokine levels (IL-4, -5, -13, -17, and INF-γ), T regulatory (Treg) lymphocytes (Foxp3+CD4+CD25+), and T effector (Teff) lymphocytes (Foxp3-CD25+CD4+) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and downstream proteins of mTORC1/2 signaling pathway were examined. Results: MSJZT markedly suppressed airway hyper-responsiveness to aerosolized methacholine, and reduced levels of IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13 in the BALF. Histological studies showed that MSJZT significantly reduced inflammatory infiltration in lung tissues. The percentage and absolute number of Teff cells were suppressed to a remarkable level by MSJZT without affecting Treg cells. Furthermore, MSJZT effectively inhibited the mTORC1 activity, but exerted limited effects on mTORC2, as assessed by the phosphorylation of the mTORC1 and mTORC2 substrates, S6 ribosomal protein, p70 S6 kinase, mTOR S2481, and Akt, respectively. Conclusion: MSJZT attenuated chronic airway inflammation in a mouse model of asthma by inhibiting Teff cells, which occurred, at least in part, via modulation of the mTORC1 signaling pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sagunja-tang (SGT) is widely used in traditional herbal medicine to treat immune system and gastrointestinal disorders and reportedly has protective effects against inflammation, cancer, and osteoporosis. In this study, we fermented SGT with different Latobacillus strains and investigated the change in phytochemical compositions in SGT and enhancement of it neuroprotective effects in SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma. METHODS Marker components, including ginsenoside Rg1, glycyrrhizin, liquiritin, liquiritigenin, atractylenolide I, atractylenolide II, atractylenolide III, and pachymic acid, in SGT, were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. SGT was fermented with eight different Lactobacillus strains to yield eight fermented SGTs (FSGTs). The conversion efficiencies of SGT marker components were determined in each FSGT. To detect the protective effect of SGT and FSGT, reactive oxygen species (ROS) assay and mitochondrial membrane potentials (MMPs) assay were performed in SH-SY5Y cells. RESULTS Compared with the other FSGTs, SGT166, i.e., SGT fermented with L. plantarum 166, had high conversion efficiency, as indicated by increased amounts of glycyrrhizin, liquiritigenin, and atractylenolides I-III. In SH-SY5Y cells, protection against cell death induced by H2O2 and etoposide was high using SGT166 and very low using SGT. Furthermore, ROS production and mitochondrial membrane potential disruption in SH-SY5Y cells were markedly suppressed by SGT166 treatment, which demonstrated that inhibition of ROS generation may be one of the neuroprotective mechanisms of SGT166. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated that fermentation of SGT with L. plantarum 166 enhanced suppression of oxidative stress and MMP loss. This enhanced neuroprotective effect was thought to be caused by the conversion of SGT phytochemicals by fermentation. SGT166 shows potential for treating neurological damage-related diseases.

Abstract
Objective This aim is to evaluate the effect of Sijunzi decoction (SJZD) treating chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG). Methods We performed searches in seven databases. The randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing SJZD with standard medical care or inactive intervention for CAG were enrolled. Combined therapy of SJZD plus conventional therapies compared with conventional therapies alone was also retrieved. The primary outcome included the incidence of gastric cancer and the improvement of atrophy, intestinal metaplasia, and dysplasia based on the gastroscopy and pathology. The secondary outcomes were Helicobacter pylori clearance rate, quality of life, and adverse event/adverse drug reaction. Results Six RCTs met the inclusion criteria. The research quality was low in the trials. For the overall effect rate, pooled analysis from 4 trials showed that modified SJZD plus conventional medications exhibited a significant improvement (OR = 4.86; 95% CI: 2.80 to 8.44; P < 0.00001) and without significant heterogeneity compared with the conventional medications alone. None reported the adverse effect. Conclusions Modified SJZD combined with conventional western medicines appears to have benefits for CAG. Due to the limited number and methodological flaw, the beneficial and harmful effects of SJZD for CAG could not be identified. More high-quality clinical trials are needed to confirm the results.

Abstract
This study aims to determine the effects of the Jianpi Qingchang decoction (JQD) on the quality of life (QOL) of patients with spleen deficiency and dampness-heat syndrome ulcerative colitis (UC).A total of 120 active UC patients with spleen deficiency and dampness-heat syndrome were enrolled into this study. These patients were randomly divided into 2 groups: test group and control group (n = 60, each group). Patients in the test group were treated with JQD, while patients in control group were treated with 5-amino salicylic acid. After treatment for 8 weeks, differences in inflammatory bowel disease questionnaire (IBDQ) scores, short form-36 health survey questionnaire (SF-36) scores, and Sutherland Disease Activity Index (DAI) values were compared between these 2 groups to assess the QOL of patients.Sutherland DAI scores decreased in both groups after the treatment, but the difference was not statistically significant (P < .05). However, the difference in bowel symptoms, systemic symptoms, total scores of the 4 IBDQ dimensions (physical function, bodily pain, vitality, and mental health), and total scores of the SF-36 questionnaires between these 2 groups were statistically significant (P < .05).JQD can be used as supplementary and alternative therapy to relieve clinical symptoms in patients with mild to moderate active UC, and consequently improve their QOL.
