Abstract
BACKGROUND In patients with post-stroke depression (PSD) in diabetes, the situation may be more complex, requiring simultaneous treatment of blood glucose, depressive symptoms, and neurological dysfunction. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy can improve tissue oxygen content and improve the situation of ischemia and hypoxia, thus playing a role in protecting brain cells and restoring the function of brain cells. However, there are few studies on HBO therapy for patients with PSD. This study explores the clinical efficacy of such therapy for stroke complicated with depression and diabetes mellitus, and to provide reference and basis for clinical treatment and development through the application of relevant rating scales and laboratory test indicators.
AIM To evaluate the clinical effects of HBO therapy on patients with diabetes with PSD.
METHODS A total of 190 diabetic patients with PSD were randomly divided into observation and control groups (95 patients per group). The control group received escitalopram oxalate 10mg once a day for eight weeks. In addition, the ob-servation group was also given HBO therapy, once a day, five times a week, for eight weeks. The Montgomery Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), hypersensitive C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and fasting glucose levels were compared.
RESULTS There were no significant differences in age, sex, or depression course between the groups (P > 0.05). After HBO treatment, MADRS scores in both groups decreased significantly (14.3 ± 5.2), and were significantly lower in the control group (18.1 ± 3.5). After HBO treatment, NIHSS scores in both groups decreased significantly, and scores in the observation group (12.2 ± 4.0) decreased more than in the control group (16.1 ± 3.4), the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.001). The levels of hypersensitive C-reactive protein and TNF-α in both groups were significantly decreased, and the observation group was significantly lower than the control group (P < 0.001). Fasting blood glucose levels in both groups decreased significantly, and those in the observation group decreased more (8.02 ± 1.10) than in the control group (9.26 ± 1.04), with statistical significance (t = -7.994, P < 0.001).
CONCLUSION HBO therapy can significantly improve depressive symptoms and neurological dysfunction in patients with PSD, and reduce the levels of hypersensitive C-reactive protein, TNF-α and fasting blood glucose.

Abstract
Multiple factors associate diabetes with cognitive impairment and depression. Antidiabetic drugs have reported antidepressant and pro-cognitive effects in diabetic and non-diabetic subjects. Antidepressant and pro-cognitive effects of metformin are reported in various studies; however, these effects are not consistent among researches. We designed a cross-sectional study. We recruited patients with T2D diagnosis from the Diabetes Clinic of the Regional Hospital of High Specialty "Dr. Gustavo A. Rovirosa Pérez" from January 2019 to May 2022. We included 431 subjects with T2D, 374 patients with metformin treatment and 57 subjects without metformin. These patients were on intensive therapies and had not a previous diagnosis of cognitive impairment or depression. We applied Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) to evaluate cognitive impairment, and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) to assess depressive signs. Our sample had a mean age of 53.77 ± 13.43 years. Metformin users were 374 individuals, and 57 subjects didn't use metformin. MMSE found cognitive impairment in 8.3% (n = 31) of metformin users, and 14.8% (n = 8) of patients without metformin. HAM-D scale showed that 39.5% (n = 147) of patients with metformin had depression signs, subjects without metformin and depressive signs were 44.6% (n = 25). We found no differences between groups for cognitive impairment and depression grades. We did not find associations between metformin treatment, cognitive impairment measures and depression sign measures. However, chronic metformin treatment, insulin use, glycemic control and age could influence our results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Emerging evidence showed metformin may have pleiotropic effects on ameliorating depression. However, whether metformin was associated with decreased risk of depression remains unclear. METHODS A historical cohort study was conducted based on a medical claim database from 2010 to 2017 in Beijing, China. Patients newly diagnosed with T2D were classified into the metformin and non-metformin groups according to their initial antidiabetic prescription. The incidences of depression between the groups were compared using Cox proportional regression model. RESULTS There were 193,624 (37.4 %) and 323,930 (62.6 %) T2D patients in the metformin and non-metformin groups. The mean age was 54.9 (SD: 13.1) years and 53.9% were females. With a median follow-up of 3.2 years, 64,963 patients developed depression. The adjusted incidence of depression in the metformin group (30.6, 95 % CI: 30.1, 31.0 per 1000 person-years) was significantly lower than in the non-metformin group (39.6, 95 % CI: 39.3, 40.0 per 1000 person-years, P < 0.001). The metformin group was significantly associated with a lower risk of depression compared with the overall non-metformin group (HR: 0.77, 95% CI: 0.75, 0.78), as well as compared with α-glucosidase inhibitors (HR: 0.73, 95 % CI: 0.71, 0.74), sulfonylureas (HR: 0.84, 95 % CI: 0.82, 0.86), and glinides (HR: 0.85, 95 % CI: 0.82, 0.88), except for thiazolidinediones (HR: 0.96, 95 % CI: 0.91, 1.01). The association between metformin and lower depression risk was significant in all the age and sex subgroups. CONCLUSIONS Metformin was associated with a lower risk of depression compared with other oral hypoglycemic agents, indicating a potential pleiotropic effect on depression.

Abstract
Insulin-sensitizing medications were originally used in psychiatric practice to treat weight gain and other metabolic side effects that accompany the use of mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, and some antidepressants. However, in recent studies these medications have been shown to cause improvement in depressive symptoms, creating a potential new indication outside of metabolic regulation. However, it is still unclear whether the antidepressant properties of these medications are associated with improvements in metabolic markers. We performed a systematic search of the literature following PRISMA guidelines of studies investigating antidepressant effects of insulin-sensitizing medications. We specifically focused on whether any improvements in depressive symptoms were connected to the improvement of metabolic dysfunction. Majority of the studies included in this review reported significant improvement in depressive symptoms following treatment with insulin-sensitizing medications. Nine out of the fifteen included studies assessed for a correlation between improvement in symptoms and changes in metabolic markers and only two of the nine studies found such association, with effect sizes ranging from R2 = 0.26-0.38. The metabolic variables, which correlated with improvements in depressive symptoms included oral glucose tolerance test, fasting plasma glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin following treatment with pioglitazone or metformin. The use of insulin-sensitizing medications has a clear positive impact on depressive symptoms. However, it seems that the symptom improvement may be unrelated to improvement in metabolic markers or weight. It is unclear which additional mechanisms play a role in the observed clinical improvement. Some alternative options include inflammatory, neuroinflammatory changes, improvements in cognitive functioning or brain structure. Future studies of insulin-sensitizing medications should measure metabolic markers and study the links between changes in metabolic markers and changes in depression. Additionally, it is important to use novel outcomes in these studies, such as changes in cognitive functioning and to investigate not only acute, but also prophylactic treatment effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The preclinical and clinical data regarding the efficacy of metformin as a pro-cognitive and anti-depressant therapy is mixed. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials investigating the effects of metformin on cognition and depressive symptoms. METHODS The study was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO identifier: CRD42020184547). PubMed and Web of Science were searched (inception through to May 6, 2020) for trials which measured the effects (change from baseline to end-of-treatment) of metformin on cognition and depressive symptoms, compared to either placebo or other oral antidiabetic therapies. When feasible, pooled meta-analytic estimates were provided using a random-effects model. RESULTS Eight studies met the inclusion criteria: four assessed only cognition, three assessed only depressive symptoms, and one study assessed both cognition and depressive symptoms. Results suggested that metformin was significantly superior to placebo in improving cognitive function in patients suffering with clinical conditions associated with cognitive impairment (SMD: 0.80; 95%CI: 0.46 to 1.15; p < 0.001; N = 2 studies; I2 = 0.0%). One study reported an association between improved cognition and depressive symptoms in a cohort of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and depression. Two studies investigating metformin versus pioglitazone showed a superior, but not significant, effect of pioglitazone on depressive symptoms (SMD: 1.56; 95%CI: -0.52 to 3.56; p = 0.13;I2 = 94.9%; N = 2 studies). LIMITATIONS Assessment of risk of bias identified two studies as having "some concerns". CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that metformin might be re-purposed for the treatment of cognitive deficits in select clinical conditions.

Abstract
Metformin is a first-line drug for treating type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and one of the most commonly prescribed drugs in the world. Besides its hypoglycemic effects, metformin also can improve cognitive or mood functions in some T2DM patients; moreover, it has been reported that metformin exerts beneficial effects on many neurological disorders, including major depressive disorder (MDD), Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Fragile X syndrome (FXS); however, the mechanism underlying metformin in the brain is not fully understood. Neurotransmission between neurons is fundamental for brain functions, and its defects have been implicated in many neurological disorders. Recent studies suggest that metformin appears not only to regulate synaptic transmission or plasticity in pathological conditions but also to regulate the balance of excitation and inhibition (E/I balance) in neural networks. In this review, we focused on and reviewed the roles of metformin in brain functions and related neurological disorders, which would give us a deeper understanding of the actions of metformin in the brain.

Abstract
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disease with symptoms that go beyond the domain of glucose metabolism. In fact, research has shown that T2DM is accompanied by neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation. Interestingly, Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), a mood disorder characterized mainly by depressed mood and anhedonia is a key feature of T2DM. A body of evidence demonstrates that there are many shared neuroimmune mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology of T2DM and MDD. Therefore, here we review the state-of-art regarding the underlying factors common to both T2DM and MDD. Furthermore, we briefly discuss how depressive symptoms in diabetic patients could be tackled by using novel therapeutic approaches uncovered by these shared mechanisms. Understanding the comorbidity of depression in diabetic patients is essential to fully address T2DM pathophysiology and treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metformin is the most widely used drug for treating type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), which frequently co-occurs with depressive disorders. Thus, patients with depression are likely to receive metformin. Metformin activates AMP-activated kinase (AMPK), which inhibits mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) signaling. mTORC1 activation is essential for the antidepressant effects of ketamine and scopolamine. Thus, we hypothesized that metformin may attenuate ketamine- or scopolamine-induced antidepressant efficacies by blocking their mTORC1 activation. METHODS We assessed the acute and sustained antidepressant-like actions of ketamine and scopolamine in male Sprague-Dawley rats subjected to the forced swim test with or without metformin pretreatment. The expressions of AMPK, mTORC1, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in their prefrontal cortex were assessed. RESULTS Metformin (50 mg/kg) attenuated the sustained, but not acute, antidepressant-like effects of ketamine (10 mg/kg) and scopolamine (25 μg/kg). Although metformin reduced mTORC1 downstream activated P70S6K, it did not significantly alter mTORser2448 activation and even increased BDNF expression. Notably, ketamine, scopolamine, and metformin all exerted significant antidepressant-like actions, as evidenced by increased AMPK phosphorylation and BDNF expression. CONCLUSIONS Metformin-induced attenuation of sustained antidepressant-like effects are not directly dependent on AMPK-deactivated mTORC1. Our results indicate the complexity of interactions between AMPK, BDNF, and mTORC1. Further research, including mechanistic studies, is warranted to comprehensively evaluate the application of metformin in patients receiving mTORC1-based antidepressants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Diabetes is associated with an increased risk of depression. Some antidiabetes agents, specifically metformin and pioglitazone, have been suggested to have beneficial effects on depression, but associations between antidiabetes drugs and depression have not been systematically investigated. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We combined four Danish population-based registers to investigate whether the 20 most widely used orally administered antidiabetes drugs were associated with an altered risk of incident depression. Analyses of insulin were included for comparisons. All persons in Denmark in 2005 were included in the study and followed until 2015. Two different outcome measures of incident depression were included: 1) a diagnosis of depressive disorder at a psychiatric hospital as an inpatient or outpatient and 2) a combined measure of a diagnosis of depression or use of antidepressants. Data were analyzed using Cox regression models. RESULTS A total of 360,205 individuals using orally administered antidiabetes drugs and 64,582 using insulin at any time during the study period were included in the analyses. Continued use of metformin and combinations of drugs including metformin were associated with decreased rates of incident depression. Pioglitazone was not associated with a decreased rate of incident depression. No other antidiabetes drugs or insulin showed significant associations with depression. CONCLUSIONS Real-life population-based data suggest a positive effect of metformin on depression rates. This evidence should be used in guiding prescriptions for patients with type 2 diabetes who are at risk for developing depression, including those with prior depression or anxiety and patients with a family history of depression.

Abstract
Close connections between depression and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) have been suggested by many epidemiological and experimental studies. Disturbances in insulin sensitivity due to the disruption of various molecular pathways cause insulin resistance, which underpins many metabolic disorders, including diabetes, as well as depression. Several anti-hyperglycemic agents have demonstrated antidepressant properties in clinical trials, probably due to their action on brain targets based on the shared pathophysiology of depression and T2DM. In this article, we review reports of clinical trials examining the antidepressant effect of these medications, including insulin, metformin, glucagon like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA), and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-γ agonists, and briefly consider possible molecular mechanisms underlying the associations between amelioration of insulin resistance and improvement of depressive symptoms. In doing so, we intend to suggest an integrative perspective for understanding the pathophysiology of depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and depression occur comorbidly and share some pathophysiological mechanisms. The course of depression in patients with the two conditions is severe. Treatment of depression in diabetic patients requires special attention because most of psychopharmacological agents can worsen glycemic control. This article aims to review studies evaluating the antidepressant effect of anti-hyperglycemic agents from preclinical perspective. METHODS A literature search was performed with PubMed and Google Scholar using relevant keywords (antidiabetic; diabetes; depression; antidepressant; animals) to extract relevant studies evaluating the antidepressant activity of anti-hyperglycemic agents in experimental models. RESULTS Several studies have reported that some traditional anti-hyperglycemic agents reduce depression-like behavior in the absence or presence of diabetes. These drugs include insulin, glyburide, metformin, pioglitazone, vildagliptin, liraglutide, and exenatide. The antidepressant activity of anti-hyperglycemic agents may be mediated by reducing the blood glucose level, ameliorating the central oxidative stress and inflammation, and regulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPAA). CONCLUSIONS Drugs which have both antidiabetic and antidepressant activities can provide better treatment strategy for patients with diabetes-associated depression. However, further research studies are still required in human subjects.

Abstract
The long noncoding RNA, steroid receptor RNA activator (SRA), has been reported to be involved in the development of many types of disease in humans. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether SRA was associated with poststroke depression (PSD). A PSD rat model was established, and depression-like behaviors and sucrose consumption in rats with PSD were analyzed. Reverse transcription-quantitative PCR (RT-PCR), western blot and luciferase dual reporter assay analyses were performed to detect the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) expression following SRA small interfering RNA (siRNA) treatment. Compared with the control, the horizontal and vertical movement scores and consumption of sucrose solution were decreased in the PSD, PSD + LV-SRA and PSD + pioglitazone groups at 7 days post-SRA-siRNA treatment, while they were increased in the PSD + LV-SRA and PSD + pioglitazone groups. Furthermore, SRA expression in the PSD, PSD + LV-SRA and PSD + pioglitazone groups was lowered compared with the control group at 7 days postinjection. SRA increased the reported luciferase activity, but pioglitazone had no effect on the luciferase activity induced by SRA. SRA upregulated PPARγ mRNA and protein expression, whereas SRA siRNA significantly downregulated its expression. No significant differences in characteristics were identified between rats with and without PSD. SRA was more highly expressed in rats with PSD than rats without PSD. Collectively, this study suggests that SRA is associated with PSD through PPARγ signaling, indicating a potential therapeutic target of SRA for controlling PSD.

Abstract
Modern times have seen depression and cardiovascular disease (CVD) become notorious public health concerns, corresponding to alarming proportions of morbidity, mortality, decreased quality of life, and economic costs. Expanding comprehension of the pathogenesis of depression as an immunometabolic disorder has identified numerous pathophysiologic phenomena in common with CVD, including chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, and oxidative stress. These shared components could be exploited to offer improved alternatives in the joint management of these conditions. Abundant preclinical and clinical data on the impact of established treatments for CVD in the management of depression have allowed for potential candidates to be proposed for the joint management of depression and CVD as immunometabolic disorders. However, a large proportion of the clinical investigation currently available exhibits marked methodological flaws which preclude the formulation of concrete recommendations in many cases. This situation may be a reflection of pervasive problems present in clinical research in psychiatry, especially pertaining to study homogeneity. Therefore, further high-quality research is essential in the future in this regard.

Abstract
Introduction: Post-stroke depression (PSD) is a common clinical problem affecting approximately one-third of stroke survivors. PSD is associated with poor functional outcome and higher morbidity and mortality rates. Currently, uncertainty remains regarding optimal pharmacological strategies for its prevention and treatment.Areas covered: This article reviews the state of the current literature on pharmacologic intervention strategies for PSD, providing a summary of the most recent evidence to support pharmacological treatment in PSD.Expert opinion: Experimental and clinical research have increased our knowledge on PSD, although unanswered questions still remain regarding the best time to begin treatment, the effect of the antidepressants in areas other than emotion, or their capability to reduce mortality in stroke patients, among others.Currently, though numerous trials and meta-analyses suggest that antidepressants are effective in treating PSD and guidelines recommend their use for PSD, in the daily clinical practice, only a minority of patients are properly assessed and treated. Therefore, though further evidence is needed to clarify the real role of antidepressants in patients with stroke, physicians and other healthcare professionals must be familiar with the pharmacological treatment of PSD, in order to improve the outcome and increase the quality of life of this vulnerable group of patients.

Abstract
Background At present, only a few studies have focused on the risk factors for depression in elderly diabetic patients, and there is little evidence for the effect of metformin in depressed elderly patients with diabetes than on its effect on blood glucose. The aim of the current work was to study the risk factors for depression in elderly diabetic patients and to ascertain the effects of metformin on the depressive state. Methods We initiated a 1:4 matched case–control study. The case group comprised 110 elderly diabetic patients with depression from nine communities in Shenyang in 2017. The control group comprised 440 non-depressed elderly diabetic patients from the same communities, which were matched by gender and age (± 2 years of age) with the case group. Depression was measured using the Geriatric Depression Scale-15, and we performed matched univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Results In the multivariate analysis, overweight status, poor physical capabilities and low activity level, and the presence of more than two additional illnesses were risk factors for depression in elderly patients with diabetes. For these risk factors, the adjusted ORs (all P < 0.05) were as follows: an adjusted OR of 2.031 and 95% CI of 1.180–3.495; an adjusted OR of 2.342 and 95% CI of 1.465–3.743; and an adjusted OR of 5.350 and 95% CI of 2.222–12.883, respectively. Patients taking metformin had a lower risk of depression than those taking no medication, with an adjusted OR of 0.567 and 95% CI of 0.323–0.997 (P < 0.05). Conclusions Overweight status, poor physical capabilities and low activity level, and the presence of more than two additional illnesses were risk factors for depression in elderly diabetic patients, and metformin was a protective factor against depression in elderly diabetic patients.

Abstract
Depression is a common comorbidity in diabetes but conventional antidepressant treatments do not consistently improve outcomes. We tested whether established diabetes treatments can also improve depressive symptoms and examined biological correlates of response. We performed a multi-database systematic search of all clinical trials, which measured the effect of licensed diabetes treatments on depressive symptoms using a validated questionnaire. Results of randomised controlled trials (RCT's) were pooled for meta-analysis. Data were also collected on insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), C-reactive protein (CRP) and fasting blood glucose (FBG) as correlates of response. Nineteen studies (n = 3369 patients) were included in the qualitative synthesis, 9 testing thiazolidenediones, 5 metformin, 2 thiazolidenediones against metformin, 2 incretin-based therapies and 1 insulin. Most studies were of good quality. In random-effects meta-analysis of RCT's, pioglitazone improved depressive symptoms compared to controls (pooled effect size = -0.68 (95% C.I. -1.12 to -0.24), p = .003, Nstudies = 8, I2 = 83.2%). Conversely, metformin was comparable to controls overall (pooled effect size = +0.32 (95% C.I. -0.23 to 0.88), p = .25, Nstudies = 6, I2 = 94.2%), although inferior to active controls (pooled effect size = +1.32 (95% C.I. 0.31-2.34), p < 0.001, Nstudies = 3, I2 = 90.1%). In random-effects meta-regression, female sex (β = -0.023, (95% C.I.-0.041 to -0.0041), p = .016, Nstudies = 8) predicted reduction in depressive symptoms with pioglitazone, but baseline HOMA-IR, FBG and severity of depressive symptoms did not. In conclusion, pioglitazone was associated with improvement in depressive symptoms, an effect more marked in women and poorly explained by effects on glycaemia and insulin resistance. Metformin had no consistent benefit on depressive symptoms. Further mechanistc trials of diabetes treatments as potential antidepressants are needed, stratified by sex and including serial measures of innate inflammation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE It is unknown whether prediabetes is a predictor of poststroke depression (PSD). We aimed to explore the relationship between prediabetes and PSD in Chinese patients with acute ischemic stroke. METHODS This is a prospective cohort study, and a total of 358 patients with acute ischemic stroke were recruited and enrolled. Patients were divided into 3 groups: normal glucose group (NGT, n = 96), prediabetes group (preDM, n = 134, impaired fasting glucose (IFG), and/or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and/or HbA1c (A1c) 5.7%-6.4%), and the diabetes mellitus group (DM, n = 128). At 1 month after stroke, patients with a Hamilton Depression Scale score of ≥8 were diagnosed as PSD. RESULTS In post hoc comparisons, the risk of PSD in patients with diabetes and prediabetes was higher than patients with NGT (37.5% vs 31.3% vs 14.6%, P = .001). Compared with NGT, the incidence rate of PSD in patients with prediabetes with HbA1c 5.7% to 6.4% and patients with prediabetes with IFG/IGT + HbA1c 5.7% to 6.4% was higher (35.3% vs 14.6%, 38.0% vs 14.6%; P = .006; P = .003, respectively). In logistic regression, prediabetes with HbA1c 5.7% to 6.4% and prediabetes with IFG/IGT + HbA1c 5.7% to 6.4% were a significant independent predictor of PSD after adjusting for potential confounding factors, with odd ratios of 1.731 and 1.978, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Our study showed that prediabetes was associated with PSD and may predict its development at 1 month poststroke. In prediabetes subgroups, patients with HbA1c 5.7% to 6.4% were more likely to develop PSD compared to NGT and IFG/IGT groups.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Post-stroke depression (PSD) is a common and serious complication after stroke, occurring in nearly one third of stroke survivors, and affecting mortality rate, functional outcome, rehabilitation results and quality of life. However, in the common clinical practice only a minority of patients are properly treated. A relatively small number of scientific reports are available on clinical usefulness and safety of antidepressants (ADs) in PSD. Areas covered: This report provides an updated review about pharmacological state of art of PSD, including efficacy and safety of different drugs and their role on prevention, treatment and functional outcome. Expert opinion: Even if currently an antidepressant treatment can improve depressive symptoms, neither the optimal drug nor the optimal lengths of treatment, have been identified. Serotonergic drugs are preferable because of their better safety profile, but in the recent years there has been an important debate on possible association between selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor use and increased mortality. Another issue is the potential role of ADs for improving functional recovery. Newer ADs have interesting properties, in particular vortioxetine, due to its properties of enhancing cognitive functions, but further research is needed to clarify its/their role in treatment of PSD.

Abstract
Depression and fatigue are common after stroke and negatively impact the quality of life of stroke survivors. The biological bases of these symptoms are unknown, but an abundance of data point to a role for inflammation. This review highlights evidence supporting the contribution of inflammation to poststroke depression and poststroke fatigue. Potential treatments for poststroke depression and poststroke fatigue are explored, with a special emphasis on those that modulate the immune response.

Abstract
Depression and diabetes are common, chronic, and frequently comorbid diseases that contribute substantially to global disability and mortality. Their relationship is bidirectional: depression increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and diabetes increases the risk of depression. Unhealthy lifestyles and poor self-care by patients with depression contribute to the increased T2DM risk. The psychosocial burden of a diabetes diagnosis and its eventual complications predispose diabetic patients to depressive symptoms. Neuroendocrine alterations and inflammation may underlie the increased risk of T2DM in depression but are also proposed as common causative factors for both illnesses. Screening for depression is essential in T2DM, and vice versa. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors effectively treat depression of patients with diabetes and positively influence glycemic control. Psychological interventions are effective for depressive symptoms, but their effect on glycemic control varies. Novel depression interventions targeting inflammation or insulin resistance underscore the common biological underpinnings of mood and metabolism.
