Abstract
Depression is a common psychiatric disorder. Due to the disadvantages of current clinical drugs, including poor efficacy and unnecessary side effects, research has shifted to novel natural products with minimal or no adverse effects as therapeutic alternatives. The ocean is a vast ecological home, with a wide variety of organisms that can produce a large number of natural products with unique structures, some of which have neuroprotective effects and are a valuable source for the development of new drugs for depression. In this review, we analyzed preclinical and clinical studies of natural products derived from marine organisms with antidepressant potential, including the effects on the pathophysiology of depression, and the underlying mechanisms of these effects. It is expected to provide a reference for the development of new antidepressant drugs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exercise is a promising nonpharmacological intervention to improve executive function (EF). However, results from randomized trials and meta-analyses examining the effects of exercise on working memory in adults with depression are mixed, and the influence of exercise on EF, as well as the key moderators of the relationship, remain inconclusive. OBJECTIVE The present systematic review with meta-analysis examined the influence of exercise interventions on EF in adults with depression, and the influence of key moderating variables. METHODS Electronic searches were conducted using Embase, Cochrane Central, Scopus, Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Database, and Weipu Database up to 25 June 2022, and updated on 16 January 2023. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining the effects of exercise training on EF in adults with depression were included. A three-level meta-analysis based on a random-effects model was applied in R. Study quality was assessed using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale. RESULTS A total of 14 RCTs that evaluated 1201 adults with depression were included. The results indicated that exercise significantly improved global EF [g = 0.180; 95% confidence intervals (CI) = 0.038, 0.323], and the subdomains of working memory (g = 0.182; 95% CI = 0.015, 0.350), cognitive flexibility (g = 0.222; 95% CI = 0.048, 0.395), and reasoning/planning (g = 0.889; 95% CI = 0.571, 1.206). In subgroup analyses, significant improvements in EF were only observed for aerobic exercise (g = 0.203; 95% CI = 0.023, 0.382), moderate-to-vigorous intensity exercise (g = 0.200; 95% CI = 0.022, 0.379), exercise performed three or more times per week (g = 0.207; 95% CI = 0.026, 0.388), in sessions ≤ 60 min (g = 0.173; 95% CI = 0.003, 0.343), and in program durations lasting at least 13 weeks (g = 0. 248; 95% CI = 0.034, 0.462). CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis demonstrates the benefits of exercise training for improving EF and the subdomains of working memory, cognitive flexibility, and reasoning/planning in adults with depression. Future randomized clinical trials are warranted to determine the therapeutic effects of exercise training on EF and cognitive symptoms in depressed patients.

Abstract
Depression is a common neuropsychiatric disorder with long-term recurrent depressed mood, pain and despair, pessimism and anxiety, and even suicidal tendencies as the main symptoms. Depression usually induces or aggravates the development of other related diseases, such as sleep disorders and endocrine disorders. In today's society, the incidence of depression is increasing worldwide, and its pathogenesis is complex and generally believed to be related to genetic, psychological, environmental, and biological factors. Current studies have shown the key role of glial cells in the development of depression, and it is noteworthy that some recent evidence suggests that the development of depression may be closely related to viral infections, such as SARS-CoV-2, BoDV-1, ZIKV, HIV, and HHV6, which infect the organism and cause some degree of glial cells, such as astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and microglia. This can affect the transmission of related proteins, neurotransmitters, and cytokines, which in turn leads to neuroinflammation and depression. Based on the close relationship between viruses and depression, this paper provides an in-depth analysis of the new mechanism of virus-induced depression, which is expected to provide a new perspective on the mechanism of depression and a new idea for the diagnosis of depression in the future.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The interleukin-6/janus kinase 2/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (IL-6/JAK2/STAT3) pathway plays an important role in immune function, but little research has focused on this pathway in depression. We sought to examine the relationship between the IL-6/JAK2/STAT3 pathway and depressive-like behavior. METHODS Using a chronic mild stress (CMS) paradigm, a total of 36 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four matched groups: (1) control + vehicle, (2) CMS + vehicle, (3) control + paroxetine, and (4) CMS + paroxetine. We investigated the effects of CMS on depressive-like behavior by using the forced swimming test (FST). Subsequently, the mRNA levels of members of the IL-6/JAK2/STAT3 pathway were assessed by qRT-PCR. RESULTS We found that rats exposed to CMS displayed a significant increase in immobility time and a decrease in climbing time in the FST. Moreover, mRNA levels of IL-6, JAK2, and STAT3 in the hypothalamus were increased following CMS. We also found that mRNA levels of IL-6, JAK2, and STAT3 were normalized by paroxetine administration, which coincided with normalization of the depressive-like behavior. CONCLUSIONS The IL-6/JAK2/STAT3 pathway may be activated in depression, and targeting this pathway may provide a novel effective therapeutic approach for the treatment of depression.

Abstract
Paroxetine is a potent inhibitor of serotonin reuptake and is widely prescribed for the treatment of depression and other neurological disorders. The synthesis of paroxetine and the possibility to prepare derivatives with a specific substitution pattern that may allow their use as biological probes is an attractive topic especially for medicinal chemists engaged in neurosciences research. Considering the extensive work that was developed in the last decade on the total synthesis of paroxetine, this review summarizes the most important contributions in this field, organized according to the reagent that was used as a starting material. Most of the methods allowed to prepare paroxetine in 4-9 steps with an overall yield of 9-66%. Despite the progress made in this area, there is still room for improvement, searching for new eco-friendly and sustainable synthetic alternatives.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Spatial orientation relies mainly on two frameworks. The egocentric depends on our own position and point of view. The allocentric relies on remembering, recalling, and recognizing environmental stimuli called landmarks. The aim of this study was to analyze the egocentric and allocentric spatial memory performance in children of different ages using two experimental memory card-placing tasks. We also aimed to examine relationships between spatial memory and other cognitive, physiological, and behavioral factors that, potentially, could be associated with spatial memory performance. Those were other visuospatial functions, the regular behavior of the child, cortisol levels, and daily life spatial memory. METHODS We assessed 62 children (5, 6, and 7 years) using card-placing tasks. We used RIST for IQ evaluation and subtest from NEPSY-II for visuospatial ability assessment. Collection of saliva sample was carried out for cortisol analysis. Parents completed BASC questionnaire for behavioral evaluation and ECM-Q questionnaire for daily life spatial memory evaluation. RESULTS Our results showed that older children performed better on mental rotation. Directionality, map interpretation, and daily memory were directly associated with both egocentric and allocentric orientation. Egocentric performance was positively related to leadership abilities but negatively to depression and atypicality, while allocentric performance was directly associated with adaptive behavior but inversely with hyperactivity. Finally, cortisol values were positively associated with allocentric performance. CONCLUSIONS Our study shows the development of different spatial abilities between 5 and 7 years, as well as the relationship between orientation performance, visuospatial skills, behavior, and cortisol.

Abstract
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an efficient therapy for major depression and modern ECT requires anesthesia to enhance safety. However, the commonly used anesthetic, propofol, may weaken the treatment efficacy. A recent study confirmed that ketamine rapidly reduced the symptoms of depression in affected patients. A previous study found that electroconvulsive seizure (ECS), the animal model for ECT, under anesthesia of low-dose ketamine combined with propofol could enhance the antidepressant efficacy and improve the cognitive performance. The present study aimed to investigate the responses to different charges (0, 60, 120, 180 or 240 mC) of ECS under compound anesthetics, ketamine combined with propofol, in stressed rats and the underlying mechanisms to aid in optimization of treatment regimens. The results indicated that ECS exhibited an improved antidepressant effects at 120 mC compared with 60 mC, however, no significant differences in antidepressant effects were identified among the 120, 180 and 240 mC groups. Furthermore, rats subjected to ECS at 120 mC exhibited the best cognitive performance. The phosphorylation levels of calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase IIα (CaMKIIα) at Thr286, glutamate receptor 1 (GluR1) at Ser831 and cAMP-response element-binding protein (CREB) at the Ser133 were higher in the 120-mC group compared with all other groups. These results indicated that the ECS at medium intensity (120 mC) with administration of compound anesthetics may exert an improved therapeutic effect on depression compared with other intensities (0, 60, 180 and 240 mC). The results also suggested that the improvement in cognitive function in stressed rats may be attributed to the phosphorylation of CaMKIIα (Thr286), GluR1 (Ser831) and CREB (Ser133).

Abstract
The vertebrate body plan is overall symmetrical but left-right (LR) asymmetric in the shape and positioning of internal organs. Although several theories have been proposed, the biophysical mechanisms underlying LR asymmetry are still unclear, especially the role of cell chirality, the LR asymmetry at the cellular level, on organ asymmetry. Here with developing chicken embryos, we examine whether intrinsic cell chirality or handedness regulates cardiac C looping. Using a recently established biomaterial-based 3D culture platform, we demonstrate that chick cardiac cells before and during C looping are intrinsically chiral and exhibit dominant clockwise rotation in vitro. We further show that cells in the developing myocardium are chiral as evident by a rightward bias of cell alignment and a rightward polarization of the Golgi complex, correlating with the direction of cardiac tube rotation. In addition, there is an LR polarized distribution of N-cadherin and myosin II in the myocardium before the onset of cardiac looping. More interestingly, the reversal of cell chirality via activation of the protein kinase C signaling pathway reverses the directionality of cardiac looping, accompanied by a reversal in cellular biases on the cardiac tube. Our results suggest that myocardial cell chirality regulates cellular LR symmetry breaking in the heart tube and the resultant directionality of cardiac looping. Our study provides evidence of an intrinsic cellular chiral bias leading to LR symmetry breaking during directional tissue rotation in vertebrate development.

Abstract
Some studies have indicated that ketamine has a rapid antidepressant effects, but the underlying molecular mechanism is still unclear. Researchers have found that mature brain-derived neurotrophic factor (mBDNF) and its precursor proBDNF are related to depression; they elicit opposite effects on cellular functions. It is clear that tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is a key regulatory element in the conversion of proBDNF to mBDNF. The chronic unpredicted mild stress (CUMS) procedure is a classical and reliable method to establish the model of depression. This study found that sucrose preference and locomotor activity were both reduced in CUMS-treated rats while were increased in those who were injected with ketamine. The hippocampal proBDNF/mBDNF ratio was downregulated after ketamine treatment in those rats, together with an increased level of tPA in the hippocampus. However, tPA activity was unaltered after ketamine intraperitoneal injection. Intrahippocampal injection of active plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (inhibitor of tPA) before ketamine treatment reversed the antidepressant effects and upregulated the proBDNF/mBDNF ratio. The results of this study suggest that the antidepressant action induced by ketamine may be related to tPA-mediated conversion of proBDNF to mBDNF in the hippocampus.

Abstract
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is an anxiety disorder with prolonged distortion of rational behavior. In this study, we report the preclinical potential of olanzapine (OLZ) in the treatment of PTSD. Since the atypical antipsychotics have modulating effects on cell protective and destructive factors, we tested the effects of OLZ in PTSD regarding these cell modulating factors. Rats, when subjected to stress-restress (SRS) model of PTSD, showed a derangement in cell protective factors like the decline in BDNF, ERK, and CREB. While the adversarial factors like caspase-3 were enhanced. Four weeks treatment with OLZ at doses of 1 and 10 mg/kg significantly mitigated the SRS-induced derangement related to PTSD. OLZ at doses of 1 and 10 mg/kg enhanced BDNF, ERK and CREB levels which were reduced by SRS in PTSD animals. Further, at the fore mentioned doses it also inhibited the elevation of caspase-3 a downstream apoptotic factor. Besides, OLZ also showed mitigation in behavioral alterations related to anxiety and memory brought about by PTSD. These effects of OLZ were comparable to that of paroxetine a clinically approved drug for PTSD in terms of biochemical and behavioral assessments indicating its anti-PTSD potential.
