Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) level and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS This retrospective study analyzed data from 752 T2DM patients treated at Shaoyang Central Hospital between September 2020 and September 2023. Patients were divided into two groups: those with T2DM alone and those with T2DM and PAD. We compared demographic data, biochemical indices, and ankle-brachial index (ABI) values. Pearson correlation and multivariate logistic regression with a forward likelihood ratio method assessed the relationship and risk factors. The predictive value of serum 25(OH)D levels for PAD was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. RESULTS The T2DM+PAD group was older and had a longer duration of diabetes compared to the T2DM group. This group also had lower BMI, diastolic blood pressure, and ABI values, but higher levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and total cholesterol (TC) (all P<0.05). Serum 25(OH)D levels were significantly lower in the T2DM+PAD group (P<0.05). ABI negatively correlated with age, diabetes duration, LDL-C, and TC, and positively with BMI and 25(OH)D levels (all P<0.05). Older age, lower BMI, higher LDL-C, and lower 25(OH)D levels were independent risk factors for PAD (ORs: 1.060, 0.781, 1.083, and 0.959, respectively; all P<0.05). The risk of PAD was significantly higher in the 25(OH)D deficiency group (P<0.05). The AUC for serum 25(OH)D in predicting PAD occurrence was 0.629. CONCLUSION Lower serum 25(OH)D levels are associated with higher risk of PAD in patients with T2DM. Early identification and management of 25(OH)D deficiency may be crucial for preventing PAD in this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Osteoporosis is a major clinical problem in elderly men and women. The correlation between total cholesterol and bone mineral density remains controversial. NHANES is the cornerstone for national nutrition monitoring to inform nutrition and health policy. METHODS Sample sizes and the location of the study and the time when it was conducted: we obtained 4236 non-cancer elderly from NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) database from 1999 to 2006. Data were analyzed with the use of the statistical packages R and EmpowerStats. We analyzed the relationship between total cholesterol and lumbar bone mineral density. We performed research population description, stratified analysis, single factor analysis, multiple equation regression analysis, smooth curve fitting, and threshold effect and saturation effect analysis. RESULTS A significant negative association between serum cholesterol levels and bone mineral density of the lumbar spine in US non cancer affected older adults aged 60 years or older. Older adults ≥ 70 years of age had an inflection point at 280 mg / dl, and those with moderate physical activity had an inflection point at 199 mg / dl, The smooth curves they fitted were all U-shaped. CONCLUSIONS There is a negative association between total cholesterol and lumbar spine bone mineral density in non-cancer elderly greater than or equal to 60 years of age.

Abstract
Background: There are several possible links that have been used to claim that osteoporosis and peripheral artery disease (PAD) are associated; however, the solid evidence is not sufficient. This study aimed to use the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) to determine if osteoporosis is associated with peripheral artery disease (PAD). Method: NHIRD records from 23 million patients were collected to recruit two matched cohort groups: 64,562 patients with and 64,562 patients without osteoporosis. To compare the crude hazard ratio (HR) and the incidence rate ratio between the two cohort groups for PAD, the Cox model was used. Result: With an adjusted HR of 1.18 (95% CI, 1.08-1.29), the osteoporosis cohort group had a significantly greater risk for PAD than the group without osteoporosis. The cumulative incidence of PAD in the cohort group was also statistically higher than it was in the group without osteoporosis (1.71% and 1.39%; p ≤ 0.0001, log-rank) over the 10-year follow-up period. In addition, the osteoporotic patients with ischemic stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and congestive heart failure (CHF) had a significantly increased risk of PAD based on subgroup analysis. Conclusions: There was a positive association between osteoporosis and the development of PAD, as patients with osteoporosis had an increased incidence of PAD over time.

Abstract
This literature review reflects modern ideas about the combination of heart failure (HF) and osteoporosis, common risk factors for these diseases, and pathophysiological mechanisms of metabolic bone diseases in HF. Despite a growing number of studies on the combined cardiovascular and skeletal system pathology, the relationship between a decrease in bone mineral density and HF risk remains poorly understood. Both conditions are common causes of disability, death, prolonged hospitalizations and a significant reduction in quality of life, while its combination exacerbates their course and increases the incidence of adverse outcomes, which is a heavy burden for a patient and health care in general. Abstract
Vascular complications are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). These vascular abnormalities result in a chronic hyperglycemic state, which influences many signaling molecular pathways that initially lead to increased oxidative stress, increased inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction, leading to both microvascular and macrovascular complications. Endothelial dysfunction represents the initial stage in both types of vascular complications; it represents "mandatory damage" in the development of microvascular complications and only "introductory damage" in the development of macrovascular complications. Increasing scientific evidence has revealed an important role of the Wnt pathway in the pathophysiology of the vascular wall. It is well known that the Wnt pathway is altered in patients with T2DM. This review aims to be an update of the current literature related to the Wnt pathway molecules that are altered in patients with T2DM, which may also be the cause of damage to the vasculature. Both microvascular complications (retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy) and macrovascular complications (coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, and peripheral arterial disease) are analyzed. This review aims to concisely concentrate all the evidence to facilitate the view on the vascular involvement of the Wnt pathway and its components by highlighting the importance of exploring possible therapeutic strategy for patients with T2DM who develop vascular pathologies.

Abstract
Peripheral arterialdisease (PAD) can result in diabetic foot ulcers, gangrene, and even amputation. Since most cases of PAD in diabetic patients are associated with peripheral neuropathy, the symptoms of vascular disease are easily concealed by the symptoms of neuropathy and are ignored by people, so it is critical for health care providers to screen PAD for the diabetes patients. This study was carried out to identify theprevalence and related factors of PAD in diabetes mellitus inpatients. This was a cross-sectional observational study. A total of 855 patients were enrolled in the study from December 2018 to December 2019. The patients were divided into a non-PAD group (ABI = 0.9-1.3) and a PAD group (ABI <0.9). Logistic multivariate regression analysis showed that age, LDL-C, dorsalis pedis artery pulsation (left foot), and sensory-current threshold (right foot) were related factors for peripheral arterial disease. Patients who are older and have a higher LDL-C level, abnormal dorsal foot pulse, and abnormal sensory-current threshold must be vigilant, and receive early screening for PAD diagnosis and treatment to avoid a malignant outcome. In clinical work, medical staff should actively apply PAD screening to diabetic patients, identify risk factors as early as possible, conduct early interventions, reduce the risk of PAD in patients, and avoid the occurrence of adverse outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are age-related diseases. It is reported that patients with CVD have a higher risk of bone loss. This retrospective study sought to reveal the association between osteoporosis and CVD in Chinese women. Although epidemiological evidence has indicated a relationship between the two, clinical data in southeast China are lacking. METHODS In total, 2873 participants completed the baseline survey from January 2007 to October 2019, and 2039 were included in this retrospective study. We divided all subjects into an osteoporosis group and a non-osteoporosis group based on their bone mineral density (BMD). Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was used to examine BMD. The general information came from the questionnaire survey. Cardiovascular diseases were defined by asking participants at the first visit and checking relevant medical records if they had suffered from hypertension, coronary heart disease, or cerebral infarction. RESULTS According to the criterion, the osteoporosis group had 678 subjects, and the non-osteoporosis group had 1361 subjects. Subjects in the osteoporosis group had a significantly higher prevalence of hypertension and coronary heart disease. Besides, the proportion of subjects who drank tea and drank milk were relatively higher in the osteoporosis group. The odds ratio (OR) for suffering from osteoporosis was high if the patients had hypertension. CONCLUSIONS This study indicated that Chinese postmenopausal women with osteoporosis had a higher prevalence of hypertension. Hypertension was significantly associated with osteoporosis.

Abstract
Bone is a complex tissue composing of mineralized bone, bone cells, hematopoietic cells, marrow adipocytes, and supportive stromal cells. The homeostasis of bone and marrow niche is dynamically regulated by nutrients. The positive correlation between cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis risk suggests a close relationship between hyperlipidemia and/or hypercholesterolemia and the bone metabolism. Cholesterol and its metabolites influence the bone homeostasis through modulating the differentiation and activation of osteoblasts and osteoclasts. The effects of cholesterol on hematopoietic stem cells, including proliferation, migration, and differentiation, are also well-documented and further relate to atherosclerotic lesions. Correlation between circulating cholesterol and bone marrow adipocytes remains elusive, which seems opposite to its effects on osteoblasts. Epidemiological evidence has demonstrated that cholesterol deteriorates or benefits bone metabolism depending on the types, such as low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. In this review, we will summarize the latest progress of how cholesterol regulates bone metabolism and bone marrow microenvironment, including the hematopoiesis and marrow adiposity. Elucidation of these association and factors is of great importance in developing therapeutic options for bone related diseases under hypercholesterolemic conditions.
