New Graduate Nurses' Perceptions of Patient Safety: Describing and Comparing Responses With Experienced Nurses

The Experience of Patient Safety Error for Nursing Students in COVID-19: Focusing on King's Conceptual System Theory

Some nursing students experience errors related to patient safety, such as falls, medication administration errors, and patient identification errors during clinical practice. However, only a few nursing students report errors during clinical practice. Accordingly, the present study aimed to investigate patient safety errors that nursing students experience during clinical practice in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study conducted in-depth interviews with 14 candidates for graduation from the Department of Nursing at a university in South Korea. In addition, after transcribing the collected data, a directed content analysis for the data based on King's interacting system theory was performed. As a result, four core categories were identified: (i) nursing students' perception of patient safety error occurrence, (ii) interaction between nursing students and others, (iii) interaction between nursing students and organizations, and (iv) nursing students' training needs related to patient safety errors. Consequently, this study identified the patient safety error-related experiences of nursing students during clinical practice during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results suggest that in the future, nursing education institutions must establish a system for nursing students to report patient safety errors during clinical practice for patient safety education and develop practical and targeted education strategies in cooperation with practice training hospitals.

Construction of a Training Content System for New Nurses in Cancer Hospital Based on Competency

Objective

To construct a training content system for new nurses in cancer hospitals based on postcompetency and to provide guidance for clinical new nurse training.

Methods

Based on literature review, semistructured interviews, and questionnaire surveys, a new draft of the nurse training content system was initially established, and 17 experts were selected to make two rounds of inquiry on the system by the Delphi method, so as to construct a new nurse training content system.

Results

The effective rate of recovery of the two rounds of expert correspondence was 100%, the cooperation among experts was high, and the authoritative coefficient of experts was 0.89. The content system of new nurse training constructed included 2 first-class indexes, 5 second-class indexes, and 45 third-class indexes.

Conclusion

The new nurse training content system is closely combined with clinical work, pays attention to improving nurses' competence, reflects the characteristics of nursing work in cancer hospitals, has a certain scientific and practical significance, and can provide guidance for the training of new nurses in cancer hospitals.

The Impact of Burnout on Emergency Nurses' Intent to Leave: A Cross-Sectional Survey

INTRODUCTION

Emergency nurses work in one of the busiest and most stressful departments in a hospital and, as such, may experience burnout more often than nurses working in other nursing units. This study examined the relationship among orientation, burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and low sense of personal accomplishment), and intent to leave.

METHODS

A cross-sectional survey design was used. Emergency nurses who were members of the Emergency Nurses Association were invited to participate in an anonymous survey. The Maslach Burnout Inventory tool was used to explore emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and sense of personal accomplishment. Emergency nurses' intent to leave was assessed with the Turnover Intention Scale. A logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the odds of intent to leave for those who scored at or above versus below the median on each burnout subscale.

RESULTS

The findings revealed that a formal orientation enhanced emergency nurses' sense of personal accomplishment and was associated with lower intent to leave. The odds of intent to leave were almost 9 times greater for participants with 5 or more years of experience, approximately 13 times greater for those with above-median emotional exhaustion, and more than 6 times lower for those with above-median sense of personal accomplishment.

DISCUSSION

Emotional exhaustion and low sense of personal accomplishment were key factors influencing emergency nurses' intent to leave. Emergency nurse leaders may find that a formal orientation program enhances sense of personal accomplishment and decreases intent to leave. Creating work environments to help emergency nurses find joy in their work may be critical to work-life balance and staff retention.
