Abstract
OBJECTIVE Numerous physiological changes occur during pregnancy, which affect both the mother and the fetus. The objective of this study was to evaluate the magnesium, calcium, phosphate, parathormone (PTH), and vitamin D levels in each trimester of pregnancy. METHODS In this study, 30 pregnant women in the first trimester, 30 pregnant women in the second trimester, 30 pregnant women in the third trimester, and 30 healthy, non-pregnant women (control) in the same age group were included. The serum magnesium, calcium, phosphate, PTH, and vitamin D levels were measured in all the participants. RESULTS No statistically significant difference was found in the PTH and phosphate levels within the groups. In contrast, a significant difference was found in the vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium levels (p<0.001 for all). By analyzing the differences between the groups, the vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium levels were found to decrease with increase in the gestational weeks. CONCLUSION For maintaining a healthy pregnancy and fetus, we recommend vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium levels to be included in routine follow-ups for each trimester and supplemented in case of deficiency.

Abstract
In the present study, first, the role of high-fat diet (HFD) in insulin resistance (IR) in offspring with diabetic and non-diabetic parents, and then the effect of magnesium sulfate (Mg) administration on improved IR in HFD diabetic parents, and their offspring were investigated. Induction of diabetes was carried out by eating HFD and a low dose of streptozotocin (STZ). Diabetic rats were divided into three groups: diabetic control (DC), insulin, and Mg-treated (Mg). The non-diabetic control (NDC) group received a normal diet. Their offspring were fed on a regular diet for four months. Blood glucose and body weight of all animals were measured weekly, and IPGTT, urine volume, and water intake were measured monthly. In both parents and their offspring, the hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp was conducted, and blood samples were obtained. In all groups, the expression of IRS1, Akt and GLUT4 genes in muscle was measured. The HFD-fed rats exhibited a significant increase in blood glucose, body weight and IPGTT. In diabetic parents and their offspring, Mg or insulin therapy lowered blood glucose, IPGTT, and HbA1c relative to the DC group. They also increased GIR in parents and their offspring. Compared to the DC group, the expression of IRS1, Akt and GLUT4 genes was increased in both parents. Mg had positive effects on the expression of IRS1, Akt and GLUT4 genes in Mg treated offspring and reduced IR in them. As a result, magnesium may have beneficial effects on IR by increasing the expression of IRS1, Akt and GLUT4 genes.

Abstract
Magnesium is an essential trace metal and a necessary factor for multiple biochemical functions in humans. Its role in biology is fundamental in over 600 enzymatic reactions implicated in protein synthesis, mitochondrial functions, neuromuscular activity, bone formation, and immune system competence. Magnesium status is relevant in fetal development during gestation and in the newborn growth during the perinatal period. Moreover, magnesium is able to influence fetal programming and disease presentation in childhood or adulthood. The aim of this review is to focus on this metal homeostasis, analyzing its normal values, the causes of hypomagnesemia, the interaction with drugs and other conditions, and the diseases associated with magnesium value alteration during pregnancy, in order to study its role in fetal programming of adult diseases. The data here reported clearly indicated the existence of a connection between magnesium status and human pathology starting from intrauterine life and extending into childhood and adulthood.

Abstract
Objective To assess the calorie intake and nutritional content of the maternal diet in regions with different culinary traditions and typical foods, and to understand the nutritional profile so as to provide information about the consumption of this population and promote maternal and perinatal health. Methods From a cohort of 1145 pregnant women with diverse socio‐backgrounds we analyzed the dietary characteristics profile according to three guidelines and compared the differences between regions of Brazil. Results Women from the northeast had the lowest level of income, occupation, education, and age (P < 0.001). Intakes of unprocessed/minimally processed foods and processed foods were more prevalent in women from the northeast than in southern/southeastern women (P < 0.001). The consumption of dairy products and vegetables was less than the recommended intake, with lower intake in southern/southeastern women (P < 0.001). This study showed a lower consumption of dairy and vegetables, with a shortfall of vitamins K and D, iron, calcium, folate, magnesium, and chromium from natural and fortified foods. We observed a greater consumption of unprocessed or minimally processed food in women from the northeast of Brazil. Conclusion Our findings indicate the importance of differentiating the source of calorie intake between regional nutritional guidance and the diversity of local cuisine. Data from 1145 maternal diets show adequate intake of calories but poor consumption of dairy, vegetables, and micronutrients from natural and fortified food.
