Abstract
The enantioselective carbene insertion into N-H bonds of anilines has been realized by cooperative catalysis of ruthenium complexes and chiral phosphoric acids, providing the expected α-aryl glycines in moderate to good yields with high enantioselectivity. Typically, by slightly modifying the reaction conditions, this approach allows the N-H bond insertion reaction to be effective for both α-aryl and α-alkyl diazoacetates for the first time with high enantioselectivity (up to 96% and 95% ee, respectively).

Abstract
An efficient asymmetric synthesis of isochromanone derivatives was realized through Z-selective-1,3-OH insertion/aldol cyclization reaction involving acyclic carboxylic oxonium ylides. The combination of achiral dirhodium salts and chiral N,N′-dioxide–metal complexes, along with the use of α-diazoketones instead of α-diazoesters, enables the cascade reaction efficiently. A variety of benzo-fused δ-lactones bearing vicinal quaternary stereocenters were obtained with good to excellent enantioselectivity, bypassing the competitive 1,1-OH insertion and racemic background aldol reaction. A highly enantioselective cascade Z-selective-1,3-OH insertion/aldol cyclization of ketoacids with diazoketones involving carboxylic oxonium ylides was achieved by using a bimetallic Rh(ii)/chiral N,N′-dioxide-Fe(iii) or Sc(iii) complex catalyst.![]()

Abstract
This work focuses on oxidatively induced regioselective intramolecular C-C bond formations based on the RhIII complexes synthesized from dirhodium(II) trifluoroacetate with 2-arylpyridines. With the selection of electron-donating groups on the arene rings of 2-arylpyridines, the unusual meta-ortho C-C bond-forming was favored, which led to the formation of meta-substituted 2-arylpyridine homocoupling dimers. On the contrary, the electron-withdrawing groups have tendency to occur conventional ortho-ortho bond-forming, resulting in the formation of new RhIII complexes possessing the intriguing RhIII (TFA)3 fragment. Preliminary mechanistic experiments suggest that the sequential oxidation of RhIII occurred in the reaction.

Abstract
The first examples of a highly efficient and enantioselective carbene-mediated insertion reaction, from a sulfur ylide, are described. By way of a catalytic asymmetric insertion reaction into N-H bonds from carbonyl sulfoxonium ylides and anilines, using a copper-bifunctional squaramide cooperative catalysis approach, thirty-seven α-arylglycine esters were synthesized in enantiomeric ratios up to 92 : 8 (99 : 1 after a single recrystallization) and reaction yields ranging between 49-96%. Furthermore, the protocol benefits from quick reaction times and is conducted in a straightforward manner.

Abstract
Catalytic carbene-transfer reactions constitute a class of highly useful transformations in organic synthesis. Although catalysts based on a range of transition-metals have been reported, the readily accessible nickel(II)-based complexes have been rarely used. Herein, an air-stable nickel(II)-carborane complex is reported as a well-defined, versatile and recyclable catalyst for selective carbene transfer reactions with low catalyst loading under mild conditions. This catalyst is effective for several types of reactions including diastereoselective cyclopropanation, epoxidation, selective X-H insertions (X = C, N, O, S, Si), particularly for the unprotected substrates. This represents a rare example of carborane ligands in base metal catalysis.

Abstract
Gold-catalyzed oxidations of thioalkynes with 8-methylquinoline oxides afford 2-phenylthioketenes that can be trapped efficiently with alcohols. The synthetic utility is manifested by terminal and internal thioalkynes over a wide scope, bearing esters, ketones, alkyl, and oxime substituents. Our density functional theory calculations suggest that gold-catalyzed oxidations of terminal and internal thioalkynes with 8-methylquinoline oxides generate gold-bound ketene intermediates without the intermediacy of α-oxo gold carbene.

Abstract
A new highly enantioselective route to α-alkenyl α-amino acid derivatives, which are important naturally occurring compounds with attractive bioactivity and synthetic utility, was developed using a N-H insertion reaction of vinyldiazoacetates and tert-butyl carbamate cooperatively catalyzed by achiral dirhodium(ii) carboxylates and chiral spiro phosphoric acids under mild, neutral conditions. This reaction has a broad substrate scope, a fast reaction rate (turnover frequency > 6000 h-1), a high yield (61-99%), and excellent enantioselectivity (83-98% ee). The chiral spiro phosphoric acid, which is proposed to realize the enantioselectivity of the insertion reaction by promoting the proton transfer of a ylide intermediate by acting as a chiral proton shuttle catalyst, can suppress several usual side reactions of vinyldiazoacetates and broaden the applications of these versatile carbene precursors in organic synthesis. To our knowledge, it is the first highly enantioselective carbene insertion reaction of vinyldiazoacetates with heteroatom-hydrogen bonds in which the heteroatom has lone-pair electrons.

Abstract
Carbon-heteroatom bonds (C-X) are ubiquitous and are among the most reactive components of organic compounds. Therefore investigations of the construction of C-X bonds are fundamental and vibrant fields in organic chemistry. Transition-metal-catalyzed heteroatom-hydrogen bond (X-H) insertions via a metal carbene or carbenoid intermediate represent one of the most efficient approaches to form C-X bonds. Because of the availability of substrates, neutral and mild reaction conditions, and high reactivity of these transformations, researchers have widely applied transition-metal-catalyzed X-H insertions in organic synthesis. Researchers have developed a variety of rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric C-H insertion reactions with high to excellent enantioselectivities for a wide range of substrates. However, at the time that we launched our research, very few highly enantioselective X-H insertions had been documented primarily because of a lack of efficient chiral catalysts and indistinct insertion mechanisms. In this Account, we describe our recent studies of copper- and iron-catalyzed asymmetric X-H insertion reactions by using chiral spiro-bisoxazoline and diimine ligands. The copper complexes of chiral spiro-bisoxazoline ligands proved to be highly enantioselective catalysts for N-H insertions of α-diazoesters into anilines, O-H insertions of α-diazoesters into phenols and water, O-H insertions of α-diazophosphonates into alcohols, and S-H insertions of α-diazoesters into mercaptans. The iron complexes of chiral spiro-bisoxazoline ligands afforded the O-H insertion of α-diazoesters into alcohols and water with unprecedented enantioselectivities. The copper complexes of chiral spiro-diimine ligands exhibited excellent reactivity and enantioselectivity in the Si-H insertion of α-diazoacetates into a wide range of silanes. These transition-metal-catalyzed X-H insertions have many potential applications in organic synthesis because the insertion products, including chiral α-aminoesters, α-hydroxyesters, α-hydroxyphosphonates, α-mercaptoesters, and α-silyl esters, are important building blocks for the synthesis of biologically active compounds. The electronic properties of α-diazoesters and anilines markedly affected the enantioselectivity of N-H insertion reaction, which supports a stepwise ylide insertion mechanism. A novel binuclear spiro copper complex was isolated and fully characterized using X-ray diffraction analysis and ESI-MS analysis. The positive nonlinear effect indicated that binuclear copper complexes were the catalytically active species. The 14-electron copper centers, trans coordination model, perfect C(2)-symmetric chiral pocket, and Cu-Cu interaction facilitate the performance of the chiral spiro catalysts in X-H insertion reactions.
