Abstract
Vegetable oils, whose hydrocarbon structure is very similar to that of petroleum products, are ideal renewable and sustainable alternatives to petroleum lubricants. Bio-lubricants are commonly synthesized by modifying the chemical structure of vegetable oils. In this study, microwave irradiation was applied to intensify the mass-transfer-limited transesterification reaction to produce trimethylolpropane triester (bio-lubricant) from camelina oil as a promising local energy crop. A rotatable RSM-BBD method was applied to find the optimal levels of experimental factors, namely reaction time (67.8 min), the catalyst concentration (1.4 wt%) and the molar ratio (3.5). In these optimal levels, the reaction yield of 94.3% was obtained with desirability of 0.975. The quadratic statistical model with a determination coefficient of 97.97%, a standard deviation of 0.91 and a variation coefficient of 1% was suggested as the most appropriate model by Design-Expert software. Finally, the physicochemical properties of the purified product were in accordance with the requirements of the ISO-VG22 base oil standard.

Abstract
The superhydrophobic surfaces inspired by the lotus have excellent performances and are known for their low contact angle hysteresis and smooth surfaces. However, there are still some problems, such as the unstable structure, poor durability, high product cost and so on that need to be improved. Those issues can be avoided via liquid-infused surfaces(LIS), which are inspired by Nepenthes and consist of a mico-nano structured substrate and a smooth continuous atomic-grade lubricant. Compared with superhydrophobic surfaces, LIS not only achieves the same hydrophobic properties but also has smaller contact angle hysteresis, smoother surface, more stable structure and lower preparation cost. Although the existence of a lubricant layer improves the performance of the material, it also leaves a hidden danger, which is easy to lose and leads to the deterioration of the durability of the material. Therefore, the lubricant-free slipper materials have attracted more and more attention in recent years due to their low volatility, good durability and excellent lubrication performance. In this review, the types of LIS lubricants and their physicochemical properties were summarized at the beginning and then the applications of LIS in various fields were introduced. At the end of this paper, some solid lubricants and their applications were described, and the future development prospects of LIS lubricants also were expected.

Abstract
This work reports the results of a study on the behaviour of five sensors recently developed for oil conditions monitoring, installed in-line in an experimental test rig for lubricants. The tests were carried out on seven oils of different origins (one synthetic ester, two bio-based synthetic esters, four vegetable oils) and use (two UTTOs and five hydraulic oils), under controlled working conditions, according to a specially designed test method. At first, the study concerned the identification of the conditions for the correct sensors' installation. Then, the tests started applying to the fluids severe work cycles intended to accelerate oil ageing. The data of viscosity, permittivity, relative humidity, electric conductivity, particle contamination, and ferro-magnetic particles provided by the sensors were compared to the results of laboratory analyses made on oil samples taken during the tests with the aim of verifying the sensors measurements accuracy and reliability and selecting the more suitable ones to in-line oil conditions monitoring, in the perspective of introducing them also in field applications, e.g., on agricultural tractors, for preventing damages due to oil deterioration, and in managing the machine maintenance.

Abstract
Antioxidants can effectively protect vegetable-oil-based lubricants against oxidative degradation and prolong their service life. A novel compound, (E)-4-({3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-[(diphenylboranyl)oxy]benzylidene}amino)-N-phenylaniline (BSPD) or {2-[(4-anilinophenyl)iminomethyl-κN]-4,6-di-tert-butylphenolato-κO}diphenylboron, C39H41BN2O, was synthesized by a one-pot reaction of the Schiff base bridged phenolic diphenylamine 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-{N-[4-(phenylamino)phenyl]carboximidoyl}phenol (SPD) with phenylboronic acid. The corresponding single-crystal X-ray study revealed that the B atom in BSPD has a typical tetrahedral geometry, and the N,O-chelated six-membered ring adopts a chair conformation. According to thermogravimetric analysis, the 5% weight-loss temperature of BSPD increases to 328 °C and the 95% weight-loss temperature is up to 414 °C. More importantly, the antioxidant capability of BSPD in vegetable oil is much better than that of commercial antioxidants [diphenylamine (DPA) and 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT)] and unmodified SPD.

Abstract

Abstract
Microbial oil produced from confectionery and wheat milling side streams has been evaluated as novel feedstock for biolubricant production. Nutrient-rich fermentation media were produced by a two-step bioprocess involving crude enzyme production by solid state fermentation followed by enzymatic hydrolysis of confectionery industry waste. Among 5 yeast strains and 2 fungal strains cultivated on the crude hydrolysate, Rhodosporidium toruloides and Cryptococcus curvatus were selected for further evaluation for biolubricant production based on fermentation efficiency and fatty acid composition. The extracted microbial oils were enzymatically hydrolysed and the free fatty acids were esterified by Lipomod 34-MDP in a solvent-free system with trimethylolpropane (TMP) and neopentyl glycol (NPG). The highest conversion yields were 88% and 82.7% for NPG esters of R. toruloides and C. curvatus, respectively. This study also demonstrates that NPG esters produced from microbial oil have promising physicochemical properties for bio-based lubricant formulations that could substitute for conventional lubricants.

Abstract
Vegetable oils extracted from oilseeds are an important component of foods, but are also used in a range of high value oleochemical applications. Despite being biodegradable, nontoxic and renewable current plant oils suffer from the presence of residual polyunsaturated fatty acids that are prone to free radical formation that limit their oxidative stability, and consequently shelf life and functionality. Many decades of plant breeding have been successful in raising the oleic content to ~90%, but have come at the expense of overall field performance, including poor yields. Here, we engineer superhigh oleic (SHO) safflower producing a seed oil with 93% oleic generated from seed produced in multisite field trials spanning five generations. SHO safflower oil is the result of seed-specific hairpin-based RNA interference of two safflower lipid biosynthetic genes, FAD2.2 and FATB, producing seed oil containing less than 1.5% polyunsaturates and only 4% saturates but with no impact on lipid profiles of leaves and roots. Transgenic SHO events were compared to non-GM safflower in multisite trial plots with a wide range of growing season conditions, which showed no evidence of impact on seed yield. The oxidative stability of the field-grown SHO oil produced from various sites was 50 h at 110°C compared to 13 h for conventional ~80% oleic safflower oils. SHO safflower produces a uniquely stable vegetable oil across different field conditions that can provide the scale of production that is required for meeting the global demands for high stability oils in food and the oleochemical industry.

Abstract
Vegetable oil has significant potential as a base oil, and substitute for mineral oil in grease formulation due to its biodegradability, low toxicity and excellent lubrication. This paper studied the development of vegetable oil-based greases with α-Zr(HPO4)2·H2O (α-ZrP) as an additive, exploring base oil influence in tribological behavior. The results demonstrated that the addition of α-ZrP in vegetable-based greases is beneficial to anti-wear property. α-ZrP particles exhibit good performance in anti-wear, friction-reduction and load-carrying capacity, and its tribological performances are better than the normally used molybdenum disulfide and graphite additives. Owing to its superior tribological properties as a vegetable oil-based grease additive, α-ZrP holds great potential for use in environmentally friendly applications in the future.

Abstract
Biomass-derived oils are recognised as the most promising renewable resources for the production of ester-based biolubricants due to their biodegradable, non-toxic and metal adhering properties. Homogeneous acid catalysts have been conventionally used in catalytic esterification and transesterification for the synthesis of ester-based biolubricants. Although homogeneous acid catalysts encounter difficulty during phase separation, they exhibit superior selectivity and good stereochemistry and regiochemistry control in the reaction. Consequently, transition metal complex catalysts (also known as homogeneous organometallic catalysts) are proposed for biolubricant synthesis in order to achieve a higher selectivity and conversion. Herein, the potential of both homogeneous transition metal complexes and heterogeneous supported metal complexes towards the synthesis of biolubricants, particularly, in esterification and transesterification, as well as the upgrading process, including hydrogenation and in situ hydrogenation-esterification, is critically reviewed.
