Effect of airborne particle abrasion and sintering order on the surface roughness and shear bond strength between Y-TZP ceramic and resin cement

Different surface treatments and adhesive monomers for zirconia-resin bonds: A systematic review and network meta-analysis

This review examined the efficacy of surface treatments and adhesive monomers for enhancing zirconia-resin bond strength. A comprehensive literature search in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library yielded relevant in vitro studies. Employing pairwise and Bayesian network meta-analyses, 77 articles meeting inclusion criteria were analyzed. Gas plasma was found to be ineffective, while treatments including air abrasion, silica coating, laser, selective infiltration etching, hot etching showed varied effectiveness. Air abrasion with finer particles (25-53 µm) showed higher immediate bond strength than larger particles (110-150 µm), with no significant difference post-aging. The Rocatec silica coating system outperformed the CoJet system in both immediate and long-term bond strength. Adhesives containing 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP) were superior to other acidic monomers. The application of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and silane did not improve bonding performance. Notably, 91.2 % of bonds weakened after aging, but this effect was less pronounced with air abrasion or silica coating. The findings highlight the effectiveness of air abrasion, silica coating, selective infiltration etching, hot etching, and laser treatment in improving bond strength, with 10-MDP in bonding agents enhancing zirconia bonding efficacy.

Effect of different surface treatments and adhesive cementation on the surface topography and flexural strength of translucent and ultra-translucent monolithic zirconia

PURPOSE

To evaluate the effect of different surface treatments and adhesive cementation on the miniflexural strength (MFS) of monolithic zirconia.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Two-hundred and forty (240) sintered bars of translucent zirconia (ZT) and ultra-translucent zirconia (ZUT) were obtained (8 mm ×2 mm ×1 mm). The bars were divided into 16 groups (n = 15) according to the factors "Zirconia" (ZT and ZUT), "Cementation" (Cem) and "surface treatment" (Ctrl:Control, Al:Aluminum oxide/Al2O3 50 µm, Si:Silica/SiO2 coated alumina particles oxide 30 µm, Gl:Glazing+hydrofluoric acid). Half of the bars received an adhesive layer application, followed by application of resin cement and light curing. The surface roughness was measured in non-cemented groups. All the bars were subjected to the MFS test (1.0 mm/min; 100 kgf). Scanning electron microscopy was used for qualitative analyses. MFS data (MPa) and roughness (µm) were statistically evaluated by three-way and two-way ANOVA respectively and Tukey's test (5%).

RESULTS

The surface treatment and the interaction were significant for roughness. Glazing promoted less roughness compared to silicatization. Regarding MFS, only the zirconia and surface treatment factors were significant. For ZT, the sandblasted groups had an increase in MFS and glazing reduced it. There was no difference between the groups without cementation for the ZUT; however, ZUT.Si/Cem, and ZUT.Al/Cem obtained superior MFS among the cemented groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Sandblasting increases the flexural strength for ZT, while glaze application tends to reduce it. Applying resin cement increases the flexural strength of ZUT when associated with sandblasting. Sandblasting protocols promote greater surface roughness.

An in vitro evaluation of bond strength and failure behavior between 3D-printed cobalt-chromium alloy and different types of denture base resins

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to evaluate the shear bond strength and failure behavior between cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy and different types of denture base resins (DBRs) over time.

METHODS

Seventy-two disk-shaped specimens (8 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness) were manufactured using a selective laser melting technology-based metal 3D printer. Three types of DBRs were used: heat-cure (HEA group), cold-cure (COL group), and 3D-printable (TDP group) DBRs (n = 12 per group). Each DBR specimen was fabricated as a 5 mm × 5 mm × 5 mm cube model. The specimens of the TDP group were manufactured using a digital light processing technology-based 3D printer. Half of the DBRs were stored in distilled water at 37 °C for 24 h, whereas the remaining half underwent thermocycling for 10,000 cycles. Shear bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine; failure modes were observed, and metal surfaces were evaluated using energy dispersive spectrometry.

RESULTS

The shear bond strength did not differ between the DBR types within the non-thermocycled groups. Contrarily, the TDP group exhibited inferior strength compared to the HEA group (P = 0.008) after thermocycling. All three types of DBRs exhibited a significant decrease in the shear bond strength and an increased tendency toward adhesive failure after thermocycling.

CONCLUSIONS

The bond strength between 3D-printable DBRs and Co-Cr alloy was comparable to that of heat-and cold-cure DBRs before thermocycling. However, it exhibited a considerable weakening in comparison to heat-cure DBRs after simulated short-term use.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The application of 3D-printable DBR in metal framework-incorporated removable partial dentures may be feasible during the early phase of the treatment. However, its application is currently limited because the bond strength between the 3D-printable DBR and metal may weaken after short-term use. Further studies on methods to increase the bond strength between these heterogeneous materials are required.

Effect of Surface Treatments with Low-Pressure Plasma on the Adhesion of Zirconia

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of low-pressure plasma on the contact angle, shear bond strength (SBS), and the failure mode of zirconia ceramic. Zirconia specimens were divided into three groups according to the surface treatment methods as follows: sandblasting with aluminum oxide (ZR-C), sandblasting with aluminum oxide and oxygen plasma (ZR-CP), and argon plasma (ZR-P). The contact angle, SBS, and surface characteristics were tested after thermocycling. Data analysis was made using the Kruskal-Wallis test and one-way analysis of variance. Plasma treatment significantly reduced the contact angle (p < 0.001) with the lowest value for the Zr-P group. An increase in oxygen and a decrease in carbon was observed on the zirconia surface in both plasma groups. For the SBS, there were significant differences among the groups (p < 0.018), the Zr-CP group showing the highest bond strength. Mixed failures were the most frequent. Plasma treatment was effective in increasing the wettability, increasing the oxygen/carbon ratio without changing zirconia surface morphology. The sandblasting plus plasma with oxygen group exhibited the highest bond strength.

Physicochemical Properties of Dentine Subjected to Microabrasive Blasting and Its Influence on Bonding to Self-Adhesive Prosthetic Cement in Shear Bond Strength Test: An In Vitro Study

The aim of this in vitro study was to assess the influence of microabrasive blasting on the physicochemical properties of dentine and shear bond strength (SBS) of self-adhesive resin cement (Maxcem Elite, Kerr, Orange, CA, USA) bonded to the dentine surface. Ninety cylindrical specimens with exposed dentine of human teeth were prepared and divided into three randomized, parallel sample sets A, B, and C. Groups B and C were subjected to abrasive blasting using a micro-sandblasting device (Microetcher IIa, Danville Materials, Carlsbad, CA, USA) with two gradations of Al₂O₃ abrasives (Group B, abrasion with a gradation of 50 μm; group C, abrasion with a gradation of 27 μm). SEM imaging, profilometry, chemical composition analysis, contact angle measurements, surface free energy, and SBS tests were performed. The resulting data were statistically analyzed using the Statistica software (ver. 13.3, Tibco Software Inc., Palo Alto, CA, USA). Microabrasive blasting caused changes in surface topography, structural features, and the connection strength between the dentin surface and self-adhesive prosthetic cement. Air microabrasion through the multifactorial positive reorganization of the treated surface of dentine is recommended as a pretreatment method in fixed prosthodontics adhesive cementation protocols.

Current scenario on adhesion to zirconia; surface pretreatments and resin cements: A systematic review

Several methods have been proposed to increase bonding of zirconia with resin. However, we are still to find the Holy Grail. A systematic literature review was performed through PubMed on international literature from January 2000 to May 2021 with relevant Medical Subject Headings terms. 56 articles were found to be relevant. Of all the different methods proposed, mechanochemical pretreatment of zirconia surface with alumina oxide and use of 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate were found to be most effective as per majority of studies. New methods that require further research also surfaced.

Effects of Different Air Particle Abrasion Protocols on the Biaxial Flexural Strength and Fractography of High/Ultra-Translucent Zirconia

In this study, the biaxial flexural strength (BFS) and fractography of high/ultra-translucent monolithic zirconia ceramics subjected to different mechanical surface pretreatments were evaluated. A total of 108 disc-shaped samples (12 mm diameter, 1.2 mm thickness) of three zirconia materials (5Y-ZP KATANA Zirconia UTML (ML), 3Y-TZP DD Bio ZX2 (DB), and 5Y-ZP DD cube X2 (DC)) were used. The BFS was investigated after subjecting the samples to surface treatment using air abrasion particles of two types (aluminum oxide or glass microbeads). The data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance, followed by Scheffe's post hoc test for multiple comparisons. The mean ± standard deviation BFS for DB was highest after treatment with 50 µm Al₂O₃ (1626.05 ± 31.9 MPa), with lower values being observed following treatment with 50 µm glass microbeads (1399.53 ± 24.2 MPa) and in the control sample (1198.51 ± 21.1 MPa). The mean ± standard deviation (SD) BFSs for DC and ML were the highest in the control groups. Surface air abrasion with 50 µm Al₂O₃ particles and 2 bar pressure is recommended for 3Y-TZP translucent zirconia, while no abrasion of 5Y-ZP translucent zirconia ceramic.

Phase Transformations and Subsurface Changes in Three Dental Zirconia Grades after Sandblasting with Various Al2O3 Particle Sizes

Although sandblasting is mainly used to improve bonding between dental zirconia and resin cement, the details on the in-depth damages are limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate phase transformations and subsurface changes after sandblasting in three different dental zirconia (3, 4, and 5 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia; 3Y-TZP, 4Y-PSZ, and 5Y-PSZ). Zirconia specimens (14.0 × 14.0 × 1.0 mm³) were sandblasted using different alumina particle sizes (25, 50, 90, 110, and 125 µm) under 0.2 MPa for 10 s/cm². Phase transformations and residual stresses were investigated using X-ray diffraction and the Williamson-Hall method. Subsurface damages were evaluated with cross-sections by a focused ion beam. Stress field during sandblasting was simulated by the finite element method. The subsurface changes after sandblasting were the emergence of a rhombohedral phase, micro/macro cracks, and compressive/tensile stresses depending on the interactions between blasting particles and zirconia substrates. 3Y-TZP blasted with 110-µm particles induced the deepest transformed layer with the largest compressive stress. The cracks propagated parallel to the surface with larger particles, being located up to 4.5 µm under the surface in 4Y- or 5Y-PSZ subgroups. The recommended sandblasting particles were 110 µm for 3Y-TZP and 50 µm for 4Y-PSZ or 5Y-PSZ for compressive stress-induced phase transformations without significant subsurface damages.

Bond durability and surface states of titanium, Ti-6Al-4V alloy, and zirconia for implant materials

PURPOSE

Screw-retained implant crowns used as dental implants comprise a zirconia coping and titanium base bonded using resin cement. These devices are prone to debonding failures. This study investigated the bond characteristics of implant materials based on shear bond strength (SBS) and surface characteristics.

METHODS

Chemically pure (CP) titanium grade-4 (Ti), Ti-6Al-4V alloy (Ti-6Al-4V), and tetragonal polycrystalline zirconia (zirconia) were evaluated as adherent materials. Plates of each material were polished, primed for the respective resin cements, and cemented using either methyl methacrylate-based resin cement (Super-Bond) or composite-based resin cement (Panavia). The cemented samples were subjected to 10,000 thermocycles alternating between 5 and 55 °C, and the SBS were obtained before and after thermocycling. The sample surfaces were characterized based on surface observations, roughness, and free energy (SFE).

RESULTS

The SBSs of all materials bonded using Panavia were significantly compromised during thermocycling and reached zero. Although the SBSs of Ti and Ti-6Al-4V bonded using Super-Bond were not significantly affected by thermocycling, those of zirconia decreased significantly. The bond durability between zirconia and Super-Bond was improved via alumina air-abrasion, which caused no significant loss of SBS after thermocycling. Surface analyses of the air-abraded zirconia validated these results and confirmed that its surface roughness and SFE were significantly increased.

CONCLUSIONS

The bond durability between resin cement and zirconia was lower than that between Ti and Ti-6Al-4V. The alumina air-abrasion pretreatment of zirconia improved the SFE and surface roughness, thereby enhancing bond durability.

Adhesion to Zirconia: A Systematic Review of Surface Pretreatments and Resin Cements

This systematic review aims to evaluate the different pretreatments of the zirconia surface and resin cement in order to determine a valid operative protocol for adhesive cementation. Methodologies conducted for this study followed the Prisma (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) guidelines. An electronic search was performed in four databases. The established focus question was: “What type of surface conditioning method is the one that obtains the best adhesion values to zirconia over time by applying a resin cement?” Forty-five relevant papers were found to qualify for final inclusion. In total, 260 different surface pretreatment methods, mainly combinations of air-abrasion protocols and adhesive promoters, were investigated. Altogether, the use of two artificial aging methods, three types of cement and four testing methods was reported. The results showed that mechanicochemical surface pretreatments offered the best adhesive results. Self-adhesive cement and those containing 10-MDP obtained the best results in adhesion to zirconia. Artificial aging reduced adhesion, so storage in water for 30 days or thermocycling for 5000 cycles is recommended. A standardized adhesive protocol has not been established due to a lack of evidence

Influence of Low-Pressure Plasma on the Surface Properties of CAD-CAM Leucite-Reinforced Feldspar and Resin Matrix Ceramics

The introduction of new ceramic materials for dental restorations is currently a reality; however, little information is available on their surface treatment for the bonding process. Furthermore, surface treatment with plasma on ceramic materials has been recently introduced, although not many studies are available. The aim of this study was to evaluate the surface properties of a leucite-reinforced feldspar ceramic (LIC) and resin matrix ceramic (RMC) after low-pressure plasma treatment. From each material, 48 discs were prepared and subject to surface treatment. The LIC group was treated by hydrofluoric acid (HF) (LIC-HF), plasma with oxygen (LIC-O2), and plasma with argon (LIC-Ar). The RMC group was treated by sandblasting with alumina (RMC-SB), plasma with oxygen (RMC-O2), and plasma with argon (RMC-Ar). The groups whose surfaces were not subjected to treatment were considered as the control group. Surface wettability and roughness was analyzed. The results showed significant differences among the treatments for both ceramics regarding wettability and roughness. Plasma treatments increased the wettability and had a very low effect on the roughness. Plasma treatments achieved similar values for both surface properties in each ceramic group with no differences between both treatments. Plasma treatment seems to be a promising alternative for ceramic surface treatments since it increased the surface energy of the ceramics analyzed and hardly affects the roughness. Further studies are necessary to evaluate the effect of plasma treatment on the bond strength of ceramics.

Impact of multiple firings and resin cement type on shear bond strength between zirconia and resin cements

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of multiple firings on the bond strength between yttria-tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP) and 2 types of resin cements.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Sixty 3Y-TZP specimens (LAVA Frame Multi) were divided into 3 groups depending on the following firing procedures: (1) 2-firing cycles, (2) 5-firing cycles, (3) 10-firing cycles. Two samples from each group were investigated by using SEM to determine the morphological changes. All specimens were treated with 125 µm airborne-particle abrasion and the surface roughness of each specimen was measured. The specimens from each firing group were then further divided into 2 subgroups (n = 9) to apply 2 types of resin cement (MDP-free resin cement: RelyX Unicem-RU, and MDP containing resin cement: Panavia F 2.0-PA). The shear bond strength (SBS) test was performed and failure types of all the debonded specimens were classified by using a stereomicroscope as adhesive, cohesive, and mixed. The statistical analysis of surface roughness and SBS data were performed by using 1-way ANOVA and 2-way ANOVA followed by Tukey-HSD tests (α=.05). Failure modes were calculated as a percentage for each group.

RESULTS

The bond strength of RU and PA to the specimens obtained with 2 firings were not statistically different from each other (P=.1). However, the SBS values of PA were found to be significantly higher than RU for the specimens obtained with 5 and 10 firing cycles (P=.001 and P=.02, respectively). Surface roughness analysis revealed no statistical difference between groups (P=.2). The SEM analysis of samples fired 5- and 10- times showed irregularities and boundary loss in zirconia grains, and empty spaces between zirconia grains.

CONCLUSION

The bond strength of PA cement was higher than that of RU to the zirconia subjected to repeated firings (5 and 10 firing cycles). When zirconia is subjected to multiple firings, using MDP-containing resin cement can be recommended.

Yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal/resin luting agent bond strength: Influence of Titanium dioxide nanotubes addition in both materials

PURPOSE

To evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) between Y-TZP and a resin luting agent, after 1 of 2 enhancing strategies with TiO_2--nts was applied, either to the resin luting agent or the Y-TZP mass, in different concentrations.

METHODS

In the Strategy TiO₂-nts on ceramic, the resin luting agent Panavia F2.0™ (Kuraray) and an experimental Y-TZP with added concentrations of TiO_2--nts (0%, 1%, 2%, and 5% vol/vol) and a commercial Y-TZP, comprised 5 different groups (n = 10). In the Strategy TiO₂-nts on cement, the resin luting agent RelyX U200™ (3 M ESPE) was added with different concentrations of TiO_2--nts (0%, 0.3%, 0.6%, 0.9% wt/wt) luted to a commercial Y-TZP, comprising 4 different groups (n = 10). The Y-TZP discs were included in acrylic bases, and a cylinder (3 × 3 mm) of the correspondent luting agent for each respective group was applied over them. After 24 h, specimens were subjected to SBS assessments in a universal testing machine. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses were also performed on Y-TZP surfaces. Data were analyzed via analysis of variance and Tukey tests (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

TiO₂-nts on ceramic influenced the bond strength significantly, but not linearly; TiO₂-nts on cement did not influence bond strength when analyzed separately, nor in comparison with the first.

CONCLUSION

Y-TZP enhancements with TiO₂-nts led to a higher SBS with Panavia F2.0, a 5% TiO_2--nt concentration presented the highest bond strength. Modified Rely X U200 did not improve SBS.

Bond strength of surface-treated novel high translucent zirconia to enamel

Aim: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of zirconia, stabilised with 5% yttria, luted to enamel and to evaluate the fracture pattern at loss of retention.

Methods: A total of 53 test specimen were manufactured from two partially stabilised zirconia materials, Zirkonzahn Prettau Anterior (ZPA) (n = 16) and Whitepeaks CopraSmile Symphony 5 layer (WCS) (n = 18), and a lithium disilicate (Ivoclar e.Max Press) (n = 19) acting as control. All test specimens were cemented to human enamel with Variolink Esthetic DC and then subjected to a shear bond strength test. Fracture and surface analysis were performed using light and scanning electron microscope.

Results: No significant differences in shear bond strength were detected when analysing the three groups. Dividing them according to the fracture pattern significant difference in shear bond strength between the two zirconia groups could be seen analysing test bodies with failure of adhesion to the test body, but not to enamel. The ZPA had higher shear bond strength (23.68 MPa) than WCS (13.00 MPa). No significant differences were seen compared to the control group (19.02 MPa).

Conclusion: Partially stabilised zirconia shows potential as a material to be used where macro mechanical bonding is not possible, although this study does not reveal how or if the bonding deteriorates over time.

[Effects of universal adhesives and resin cement on the shear bond strength of zirconia]

OBJECTIVE

To study the effects of universal adhesives and resin cement on the shear bond strength and durability of zirconia ceramics.

METHODS

Zirconia ceramics were sintered into 20 mm×10 mm×10 mm and 10 mm×10 mm×10 mm specimens. The experiment was divided into 12 groups. The two types of specimens were bonded using two variants of resin cement (RelyX Ultimate and Clearfil SAC self-adhesive resin cement), universal adhesives (non-adhesive, Scotchbond uni-versal adhesive, and Clearfil SE One adhesive), and storage conditions (water bath and water bath-thermal cycling). The shear bond strengths were tested, and the fracture morphologies were analyzed.

RESULTS

The cement (F=8.41, P<0.01) and adhesive (F=30.34, P<0.01) exerted a significant effect on the shear bond strength of zirconia, whereas storage condition showed no significant effect on this property (F=1.83, P=0.18). The lowest shear bond strength (14.02 MPa±6.86 MPa) was exhibited by the group treated with RelyX Ultimate resin cement, non-adhesive, and water bath-thermal cycling, whereas the highest shear bond strength (54.12 MPa±8.37 MPa) was displayed by the group treated with RelyX Ultimate resin cement, Scotchbond universal adhesive, and water bath-thermal cycling.

CONCLUSIONS

Universal adhesives can improve the durability of the bonding of resin cement to zirconia. If non-self-adhesive resin cement is used without a universal adhe-sive, the durability of the bond will be greatly reduced.
