Biological Applications of Silica-Based Nanoparticles

Silica nanoparticles have been widely explored in biomedical applications, mainly related to drug delivery and cancer treatment. These nanoparticles have excellent properties, high biocompatibility, chemical and thermal stability, and ease of functionalization. Moreover, silica is used to coat magnetic nanoparticles protecting against acid leaching and aggregation as well as increasing cytocompatibility. This review reports the recent advances of silica-based magnetic nanoparticles focusing on drug delivery, drug target systems, and their use in magnetohyperthermia and magnetic resonance imaging. Notwithstanding, the application in other biomedical fields is also reported and discussed. Finally, this work provides an overview of the challenges and perspectives related to the use of silica-based magnetic nanoparticles in the biomedical field.

Antimicrobial Effects of Nanostructured Rare-Earth-Based Orthovanadates

The search for novel antimicrobial agents is of huge importance. Nanomaterials can come to the rescue in this case. The aim of this study was to assess the cytotoxicity and antimicrobial effects of rare-earth-based orthovanadate nanoparticles. The cytotoxicity against host cells and antimicrobial activity of LaVO₄:Eu³⁺ and GdVO₄:Eu³⁺ nanoparticles were analyzed. Effects of nanomaterials on fibroblasts were assessed by MTT, neutral red uptake and scratch assays. The antimicrobial effects were evaluated by the micro-dilution method estimating the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of nanoparticles against various strains of microorganisms, DNA cleavage and biofilm inhibition. GdVO₄:Eu³⁺ nanoparticles were found to be less toxic against eukaryotic cells compared with LaVO₄:Eu³⁺. Both nanoparticles exhibited antimicrobial activity and the highest MIC values were 64 mg/L for E. hirae, E. faecalis and S. aureus shown by GdVO₄:Eu³⁺ nanoparticles. Nanoparticles demonstrated good DNA cleavage activity and induction of double-strand breaks in supercoiled plasmid DNA even at the lowest concentrations used. Both nanoparticles showed the biofilm inhibition activity against S. aureus at 500 mg/L and reduced the microbial cell viability. Taken the results of host toxicity and antimicrobial activity studies, it can be assumed that GdVO₄:Eu³⁺ nanoparticles are more promising antibacterial agents compared with LaVO₄:Eu³⁺ nanoparticles.

Metal/metal oxide nanocomposites for bactericidal effect: A review

Many microbial species causing infectious disease all over the world became a social burden and creating threat among community. These microbes possess long lifetime, enhancing mortality and morbidity rate in affected organisms. In this condition, the treatment was ineffective and more chances of spreading of infection into other organisms. Hence, it is necessary to initiate infection control efforts and prevention activities against multidrug resistant microbes, to reduce the death rate of people. Seriously concerning towards this problem progress was shown in developing significant drugs with least side effects. Emergence of nanoparticles and its novelty showed effective role in targeting and destructing microbes well. Further, many research works have shown nanocomposites developed from nanoparticles coupled with other nanoparticles, polymers, carbon material acted as an exotic substance against microbes causing severe loss. However, metal and metal oxide nanocomposites have gained interest due to its small size and enhancing the surface contact with bacteria, producing damage to it. The bactericidal mechanism of metal and metal oxide nanocomposites involve in the production of reactive oxygen species which includes superoxide radical anions, hydrogen peroxide anions and hydrogen peroxide which interact with the cell wall of bacteria causing damage to the cell membrane in turn inhibiting the further growth of cell with leakage of internal cellular components, leading to death of bacteria. This review provides the detailed view on antibacterial activity of metal and metal oxide nanocomposite which possessed novelty due to its physiochemical changes.

Antibacterial magnetic nanoparticles for therapeutics: a review

Along with the extensive range of exotic nanoparticle (NPs) applications, investigation of magnetic NPs (MNPs) in vitro has ushered modern antibacterial studies into an increasingly attractive research area. A great number of microorganisms exist in the size scales from nanometre to micrometre regions. The enormous potential of engineered MNPs in therapeutic procedures against various drug-resistant bacteria has declined the menace of fatal bacterial infections. Many biocompatible MNPs have been introduced that possess remarkable impacts on various bacterial strains. Conventional synthesis methods such as co-precipitation or hydrothermal techniques have been widely adopted in the production of MNPs. The MNPs for antibacterial applications are mainly required to be superparamagnetic, recyclable and biocompatible. To implement novel strategies in developing new generation antimicrobial magnetic nanomaterials, it is essential to obtain a comprehensive preview of recent achievements in synthesis, proposed antibacterial mechanisms and characterisation techniques of these nanomaterials. This review highlights notable aspects of antibacterial activity in engineered MNPs and nanocomposites including their particle properties (size, shape and saturation magnetisation), antibacterial mechanisms, synthesis methods, testing methods, surface modifications and minimum inhibitory concentrations.

Functionalization of La0.33Ca0.67MnO3 with biologically active small ligand at room temperature

We report the structural, morphological and optical activities of a paramagnetic manganite (La_0.33Ca_0.67MnO₃) synthesized at 900 °C. A simple method of formation of complex was employed. A complex was formed between a pre-prepared manganite dissolved in HCl and reacted with an organic ligand (ethyl 4-nitrobenzoate). The optical and antimicrobial properties of a complex were determined. The Ultraviolet-visible and Fourier-transform infra-red spectroscopy were used in monitoring optical activities of the resulting product. It was observed to absorb in the visible region (205 nm and 256 nm). The peaks observed from the infra-red spectra indicated that the reaction occurred at the nitroso end of the ethyl 4-nitrobenzoate. The bacterial inhibitory property of the LCMO-ethyl 4-nitrobenzoate was determined against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albican, Aspergillus niger and Staphylococcus auerus. It was observed to inhibit the growth of all the microbes with zone of inhibitions of 60 mm, 56 mm, 45 mm and 32 mm, for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albican, Aspergillus niger and Staphylococcus auerus, respectively.

The method used was simple and a complex was formed within 6 h without the use of complicated equipment.

The method requires no heat treatment and can be prepared at room temperature.

LCMO-ethyl 4-nitrobenzoate was biologically active against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albican, Aspergillus niger and Staphylococcus aureus.
