Abstract
PURPOSE Rehabilitation professionals prescribe patients with suitable powered mobility aids (PMAs) based on patient characteristics, e.g., age and mobility. However, there is paucity of literature examining patient characteristics associated with PMA types in Asian contexts. This research aims to study (i) characteristics of Singapore PMA users and (ii) correlations between characteristics and two PMA types - motorised wheelchairs and powered scooters. It is hypothesised that patients' age, mobility status and medical conditions have correlations with PMA types. METHODOLOGY A cross-sectional, retrospective study design was used to investigate characteristics of patients (age ≥ 21 years) at Tan Tock Seng Hospital Occupational Therapy Seating Clinic between 2017 and 2019. Comparisons of proportions of motorised wheelchair users versus powered scooter users based on characteristics were analysed using Chi-square test. Subsequently, statistically significant patient characteristics were selected for a multiple logistic regression. RESULTS Among 352 patients, 21% and 79% were prescribed motorised wheelchairs and powered scooters, respectively. Patients aged 61-90 years were twice those aged 21-60 years. Males were double of females. Patients of (i) an older age, (ii) more ambulant, (iii) independent in transfers and (iv) in activities of daily living (ADLs), were more likely powered scooter users. Conversely, patients of (i) a younger age, (ii) less ambulant, (iii) require assistance in transfers and (iv) in ADLs were more likely motorised wheelchair users. Patients' gender and caregiver status showed no statistically significant correlations with PMA types. CONCLUSIONS Rehabilitation professionals could consider patients' age, mobility status, transfer status and ADL status when prescribing PMA for Asian populations.

Abstract
Monitoring joystick operations in power wheelchairs (PWCs) is promising for investigating user-wheelchair interaction and providing quantitative measures to assess the user's driving performance. In this paper, an add-on measurement system, Power Wheelchair Maneuvering Logger (PWhML), is developed to provide an easy-to-implement and cost-effective solution for monitoring the user's joystick operations in PWCs. The proposed system uses two compact inertial measurement units (IMUs), which are respectively attached to the joystick and wheelchair armrest for movement sensing. A coordinate transformation-based method is proposed to estimate the joystick operating angles using the acceleration data measured by the attached IMUs. The accuracy of the proposed method was thoroughly evaluated under different conditions. The evaluation trials in a stationary PWC reported a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.59° in the forward/backward direction and 0.64° in the leftward/rightward direction, validating the established geometry model for coordinate transformation. The subsequent driving experiments on outdoor test courses demonstrated the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method in various terrain conditions (MAE of less than 3°). A clustering analysis based on the t-distributed stochastic neighborhood embedding method correctly categorized different driving activities using the joystick operating angles measured by PWhML. These results indicate that integrating the developed PWhML into PWCs can facilitate a quantitative measurement of the user's driving behavior, providing valuable insights to identify careless operation patterns and help PWC users to improve driving performance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify the trends of wheelchair use and physical characteristics among older people who used wheelchairs relative to those who did not. DESIGN Cohort and survey. SETTING General community. PARTICIPANTS 7026 participants (N=7026) were selected from the 2011 cohort of the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS), which is made up of Medicare beneficiaries over the age of 65. Repeated observations among participants in the 2011 cohort were analyzed in the 4 following rounds: 2013 (N=4454), 2015 (N=3327), 2017 (N=2623), and 2019 (N=2091). Participants were divided into 2 groups: those who used and did not use wheelchairs. INTERVENTIONS Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURES Physical characteristics, including pain, strength limitation, balance problems, mobility disability, as well as the frequency of going outside. RESULTS The number of older adults who use wheelchairs had increased significantly from 4.7 per 100 people in 2011 to 7.1 in 2019 (P<.001). The logistic regression analysis indicated that participants who reported less frequently going out were at least 4.27 times more likely to be wheelchair users than non-wheelchair users (P<.01). Participants who reported health and physical problems were at least 2.48 times more likely to be wheelchair users than non-wheelchair users from 2011 to 2017 (P<.0001). Balance or coordination problems increased (24%-38%) significantly among non-wheelchair users from 2011 to 2019 (all P<.05). CONCLUSIONS Current wheelchair users reported more physical difficulties and were much less likely to go outside. This lower outdoor mobility could be due to physical difficulties or potential barriers in physical and socio-cultural environments. In addition, older adults who do not use wheelchairs showed increasing physical problems over time (including balance or coordination problems). Clinicians should consider older wheelchair users' health and physical limitations when prescribing wheelchairs.

Abstract
Wheelchair users (WCUs) face high rates of shoulder overuse injuries. As exercise is recommended to reduce cardiovascular disease prevalent among WCUs, it is becoming increasingly important to understand the mechanisms behind shoulder soft-tissue injury in WCUs. Understanding the kinetics and kinematics during upper-limb propulsion is the first step toward evaluating soft-tissue injury risk in WCUs. This paper examines continuous kinetic and kinematic data available in the literature. Attach-unit and recumbent handcycling are examined and compared. Athletic modes of propulsion such as recumbent handcycling are important considering the higher contact forces, speed, and power outputs experienced during these activities that could put users at increased risk of injury. Understanding the underlying kinetics and kinematics during various propulsion modes can lend insight into shoulder loading, and therefore injury risk, during these activities and inform future exercise guidelines for WCUs.

Abstract
Impaired shoulder function hinders the ability of wheelchair users to maintain independence. The current state of the literature delineates the risks and benefits of surgical techniques for the management of shoulder pathologies. To the best of our knowledge, there is no study that has investigated complications following total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) in wheelchair users. Utilizing the PearlDiver Mariner national administrative database, 72,108 patients were identified who underwent TSA with a concurrent diagnosis of a rotator cuff tear. Two matched cohorts, one of wheelchair users and one of non-wheelchair users, were created. Due to limitations within PearlDiver, one-year outcomes, including comorbidity and complication rates and readmission statistics, were compared between the two cohorts. Each matched cohort of 869 patients underwent TSA with a concurrent diagnosis of a rotator cuff tear. The rate of readmission in wheelchair users was greater than in non-wheelchair users (24.05% vs. 9.55%, OR: 3.00, CI: 2.279, 3.946). Patients in the wheelchair cohort exhibited higher rates of complications and comorbidities (p < 0.001). Among the most likely to be readmitted after TSA were patients with osteoarthritis, pulmonary heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and hypertension (p < 0.05). Significant differences in surgical outcomes existed between wheelchair and non-wheelchair users in terms of preoperative comorbidities, postoperative complications, and readmission rates.

Abstract
Changes in the composition of the body mass of functionally limited older patients may contribute to a decrease in functional fitness and the development of chronic diseases. This research aimed to assess the differences in anthropometric parameters and physical fitness of older patients, over the age of 65, in a 12-week clinical intervention study. Method: The study participants were nursing home inhabitants aged 65-85 who were functionally limited. Persons meeting the inclusion criteria were assigned to one of the three groups: Group 1-basic exercises/BE group (n = 56); Group 2-physical exercises with elements of dancing/PED group (n = 57); Group 3-control group/CO group (n = 56) routine care. The data were collected at the beginning of the study and at the 12-week mark. The outcome was observed for hand grip strength (HGS), arm curl test (ACT), Barthel Index (BI), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), triceps skin fold (TSF), waist-to-hip-ratio (WHR), and arm muscle area (AMA). Results: The study included 98 women and 71 men. The average age of the participants was 74.40 years. The analysis of the effects of the 12-week exercise program showed the greatest changes in HGS, ACT, and BI in the exercise groups, especially in the PED group compared to the BE group. Statistically significant differences in the examined parameters of the PED vs. BE vs. CO groups were demonstrated in favour of the exercising groups. In conclusion, a 12-week program of group physical exercises, both PED and BE, improves physical fitness indicators and anthropometric indicators.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Several diseases and conditions, such as cerebrovascular disease, arthritis, previous fractures, neurological diseases, or amputation, can result in severe immobility justifying wheelchair use for increased mobility. Immobility results in disuse osteoporosis and is considered a risk factor for fracture, although there are no large cohort studies that have investigated fracture risk in patients who use wheelchairs compared with an ambulatory control group. OBJECTIVE To investigate whether immobilized adults who used wheelchairs had a different risk of fracture and injurious falls compared with matched ambulatory controls. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This retrospective cohort study compared patients who used wheelchairs and controls (propensity score matched 1:1 using 22 variables relating to anthropometrics, general condition, comorbidity, and fall and fracture risk), identified through a national database of adults 65 years or older who underwent a health evaluation (baseline) at Swedish health care facilities. Patients were followed up from January 1, 2007, to December 31, 2017, and data analysis was performed between June 1 and 30, 2022. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Incident fracture, injurious falls without fracture, and deaths. RESULTS A total of 55 442 adults using wheelchairs were included in the analysis (mean [SD] age, 83.2 [8.3] years; 60.5% women). Those who used wheelchairs and the 55 442 matched controls were followed up for a median of 2.0 (IQR, 0.5-3.2) and 2.3 (IQR, 0.8-3.6) years, respectively. Patients who used wheelchairs had a lower risk of any fracture (hazard ratio [HR], 0.43 [95% CI, 0.41-0.44]), major osteoporotic fracture (HR, 0.32 [95% CI, 0.31-0.33]), and hip fracture (HR, 0.30 [95% CI, 0.28-0.32]) compared with the ambulatory controls, associations that were only marginally affected by multivariable (same as the matching variables) adjustment. The risk of fall injury was lower among those who used wheelchairs than among ambulatory controls (unadjusted HR for Cox proportional hazards models, 0.48 [95% CI, 0.47-0.50]) and remained highly similar after adjustments. Patients who used wheelchairs had a significantly increased risk of death (HR, 1.35 [95% CI, 1.33-1.36]) compared with controls. Association between wheelchair use and fracture outcomes and injurious falls, calculated using a Fine and Gray model with death as a competing risk, was similar to associations obtained using Cox proportional hazards regression for all fracture outcomes. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE In this retrospective cohort study of older adults, wheelchair use was associated with a lower risk of fracture than observed in ambulatory controls. These findings suggest that immobility associated with wheelchair use should not be considered a risk factor for fracture.

Abstract
Objective Chair-based resistance band exercise (CRBE) is a simple and safe physical activity for persons with limited mobility. This study aimed to review and analyze CRBE effects on physical functioning, sleep quality, and depression among older adults in long-term care facilities (LTCF). Method A systematic search guided by the PRISMA 2020 approach was performed on specific databases: AgeLine, CINAHL, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science. The randomized controlled trial studies that trialed CRBE for older adults in LTCF, peer-reviewed articles published in the English language from inception to March 2022 were retrieved. Methodological quality was established using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database scale. The random and fixed effects model were used to generate the pooled effect size. Results Nine studies met the eligibility criteria and were synthesized. The results revealed that CRBE significantly promoted the activity of daily living (six studies; SMD = 0.30, P = 0.001), lung capacity (three studies; MD = 40.35, P < 0.001), handgrip strength (five studies; MD = 2.17, P < 0.001), upper limb muscle endurance (five studies; MD = 2.23, P = 0.012), lower limb muscle endurance (four studies; MD = 1.32, P < 0.001), upper body flexibility (four studies; MD = 3.06, P = 0.022), lower body flexibility (four studies; MD = 5.34, P < 0.001), dynamic balance (three studies; MD = -0.35, P = 0.011), sleep quality (two studies; MD = -1.71, P < 0.001), and reduced depression (two studies; SMD = -0.33, P = 0.035). Conclusion The evidence suggests that CRBE improved physical functioning parameters, and sleep quality, and lowers depression among older adults in LTCF. This study could be used to persuade long-term care facilities to allow people with limited mobility to engage in physical activity.

Abstract
Background Individuals who use wheelchairs and scooters rarely undergo fall risk screening. Mobile health technology is a possible avenue to provide fall risk assessment. The promise of this approach is dependent upon its usability. Objective We aimed to determine the usability of a fall risk mobile health app and identify key technology development insights for aging adults who use wheeled devices. Methods Two rounds (with 5 participants in each round) of usability testing utilizing an iterative design-evaluation process were performed. Participants completed use of the custom-designed fall risk app, Steady-Wheels. To quantify fall risk, the app led participants through 12 demographic questions and 3 progressively more challenging seated balance tasks. Once completed, participants shared insights on the app’s usability through semistructured interviews and completion of the Systematic Usability Scale. Testing sessions were recorded and transcribed. Codes were identified within the transcriptions to create themes. Average Systematic Usability Scale scores were calculated for each round. Results The first round of testing yielded 2 main themes: ease of use and flexibility of design. Systematic Usability Scale scores ranged from 72.5 to 97.5 with a mean score of 84.5 (SD 11.4). After modifications were made, the second round of testing yielded 2 new themes: app layout and clarity of instruction. Systematic Usability Scale scores improved in the second iteration and ranged from 87.5 to 97.5 with a mean score of 91.9 (SD 4.3). Conclusions The mobile health app, Steady-Wheels, has excellent usability and the potential to provide adult wheeled device users with an easy-to-use, remote fall risk assessment tool. Characteristics that promoted usability were guided navigation, large text and radio buttons, clear and brief instructions accompanied by representative illustrations, and simple error recovery. Intuitive fall risk reporting was achieved through the presentation of a single number located on a color-coordinated continuum that delineated low, medium, and high risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Older nursing home residents are often characterized by multimorbidity and dependency in activities of daily living. Most exercise studies in this setting aim at residents who are still able to walk despite the huge group of residents that is unable to walk. Thus, little is known about the effectiveness to improve cognitive and motor functions as well as well-being within this target group, e.g., by use of chair-based exercises. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of a 16-week multicomponent chair-based exercise intervention on motor functions, cognition and well-being for nursing home residents who are unable to walk. METHODS A two-arm single-blinded multicenter randomized controlled trial integrated N = 52 nursing home residents with a mean age of 81 ± 11 years (63% female), randomly assigned to a training (n = 26, 16 weeks; twice a week; 60 min) or a wait-list control group (n = 26). The intervention followed the F.I.T.T. principles (frequency, intensity, time and type) and was continuously adapted to residents' performance level. The outcomes motor function (hand grip strength, sitting balance, manual dexterity), cognitive performance (cognitive status, working memory) and psychosocial resources (physical and mental well-being (SF12), satisfaction with life (SWLS), depressive symptoms (CES-D)) were assessed at baseline (pre-test) and after 16-weeks (post-treatment). Statistics were performed using ANOVA for repeated measures. RESULTS The results of the ANOVA showed significant improvements of the intervention group for hand grip strength (Pre: M = 12.67, SD = 5.28; Post: M = 13.86, SD = 4.79; Group × Time: F(1, 17) = 10.816, p = .002, ηp2 = 0.241), manual dexterity (Pre: M = 4.50, SD = 5.17; Post: M = 5.30, SD = 4.25; Group × Time: F(1, 7) = 9.193, p = .008, ηp2 = 0.365), cognition (Pre: M = 10.31, SD = 6.87; Post: M = 11.06, SD = 7.50; Group × Time: F(1, 15) = 12.687, p = .001, ηp2 = 0.284), and depression (Pre: M = 5.19, SD = 5.12; Post: M = 4.38, SD = 4.62; Group × Time: F(1, 14) = 5.135, p = .031, ηp2 = 0.150) while the values of the control group decreased. CONCLUSION The multicomponent chair-based intervention over 16 weeks was able to improve motor functions and cognition in nursing home residents who are unable to walk. Other psychological factors remained stable within the intervention group, which can be interpreted as a good result for this target group. All of the investigated parameters showed a significant decrease in the control group. The intervention seemed to cause physiological adaptations even in very old age. Study results encourage to further differentiate the heterogeneous group of nursing home residents concerning mobility aspects and to include chair-based interventions as feasible program to prevent further decline of functional performance and maintain independence in activities of daily living for a better physical and mental well-being.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Over the last few decades, the quality of care and the quality of life of nursing home (NH) residents have significantly improved, but insufficient physical activity and social involvement still represent substantial challenges in modern nursing facilities. The main aim of this research was to assess the influence of physical exercises with dance movement therapy (DMT) elements on strength and other fitness components of the upper limbs and the overall functional performance of NH residents in wheelchairs compared to standard exercise programmes and usual care. METHOD The study participants were persons aged 68-85 who lived in NH and used manual wheelchairs as a primary means of mobility. Individuals meeting the inclusion criteria were assigned to one of the three groups: Group 1, basic exercise/BE group (n = 55); group 2, physical exercises with elements of dance movement therapy/PED group (n = 55); and group 3, control group, usual care/CO group (n = 55). The intervention for both exercising groups consisted of a 30-min session, two times a week, for 12 weeks in total. Outcome assessments were performed at baseline, 12 weeks after baseline (immediately after the intervention) and 24 weeks after baseline (12 weeks after the intervention). The main outcome was observed for hand grip strength (HGS), while secondary outcomes for box and block test (BBT), arm curl test (ACT), back scratch test (BS), chair sit-and-reach (CSR), peak expiratory flow (PEF), Barthel Index (BI), Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and the range of motion of the shoulder. RESULTS Prior to the start of the exercise programmes, all the tested groups were homogeneous. After 12 weeks the PED group presented higher statistically significant scores in HGSL, BBT, ACT, BS, CSR, BI, BBS: p < 0.001 and HGSR: p = 0.01, compared to the BE group. After 24 weeks from the beginning of the intervention the comparison between the PED group and the BE group showed statistically significant differences (p < 0.001) in favour of PED group in almost all areas: HGSR, HGSL, BBT: ACT, PEF, BS, CSR, BI. After 12 and 24 weeks both intervention groups performed better than the CO in all measures except for Katz ADL and shoulder extension. CONCLUSION Twelve weeks of physical exercises had beneficial effects on the strength and fitness of the upper limbs and overall functional performance in both exercise groups. This study demonstrated that group performing physical exercises with elements of DMT obtained statistically better scores in the majority of analysed domains than other groups. Abstract
Seated postural control is essential for wheelchair users to maintain proper position while performing activities of daily living. Clinical tests are commonly used to measure seated postural control, yet they are subjective and lack sensitivity. Lab-based measures are highly sensitive but are limited in scope and restricted to research settings. Establishing a valid, reliable, and accessible measurement tool of seated postural control is necessary for remote, objective assessments. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the validity, reliability, and sensitivity of smartphone-based postural control assessments in wheelchair users. Eleven participants (age: 35.4 ± 17.9) completed two experimental visits 1-week apart consisting of three clinical tests: Trunk Control Test (TCT), Function in Sitting Test (FIST), and Tee-shirt Test, as well as, standardized instrumented balance tasks that manipulated vision (eyes open and closed), and trunk movement (functional reach and stability boundary). During these tasks, participants held a smartphone instrumented with a research-grade accelerometer to their chest. Maximum and root mean square (RMS) acceleration in the medial-lateral (ML) and anterior-posterior (AP) axes were derived. Participants were grouped into non-impaired and impaired postural groups based on FIST scores. Spearman rank-order correlations were conducted between the two devices' outcome measurements and between these measures and those of the clinical tests. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and the area under the curves (AUC) were determined to distinguish participants with and without impaired postural control. The reliability of outcome variables was assessed using inter-class correlations. Strong correlations between outputs derived from the smartphone and research-grade accelerometer were seen across balance tasks (ρ = −0.75–1.00; p ≤ 0.01). Numerous significant moderate correlations between clinical test outcomes and smartphone and research-grade RMS ML accelerometry were seen (ρ = −0.62 to 0.83 (p ≤ 0.044)]. On both devices, the AUC for ROC plots were significant for RMS ML sway during the eyes open task and functional stability boundary (p < 0.05). Reliability of smartphone accelerometry was comparable to the research-grade accelerometer and clinical tests. This pilot study illustrated that smartphone-based accelerometry may be able to provide a valid and reliable assessment of seated postural control and have the ability to distinguish between those with and without impaired postural control.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION As our society ages, mobility scooters are a fast-growing mode of transportation. The growing prevalence of mobility scooters as a mode of transportation has the potential to not only affect the lives of older adults who use them but to impact urban environments at large as well as have implications for the safety of pedestrians and of other vehicle users. GOAL The goal of this paper is to explore the gaps in the existing literature regarding mobility scooters, laying out key areas for future research. RESULTS We propose three areas of research that focus on mobility scooter use by older people: (1) research involving users - impacts on older people employing mobility scooters; (2) studying the impact on urban space - public spaces and passageways used as travel routes, the barriers impeding travel and lack of appropriate parking solutions in the urban environment; and (3) issues of safety - mobility scooter driving and travel regulations and infrastructure design regulations. DISCUSSION Addressing these gaps in knowledge has the potential to contribute to the social and physical sustainability of future urban environments as well as to the wellbeing of older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Wheelchair users typically receive little training about wheelchair maintenance. Therefore, we developed a peer-led, manual wheelchair skills maintenance training programme, with the intention of evaluating its efficacy in a future experimental study. PURPOSE The purpose of this feasibility study was to examine how well we were able to implement the training programme and to evaluate the feasibility of conducting a larger scale clinical trial. SETTING Spinal cord injury research centre. PARTICIPANTS Five mentors and fifteen mentees were recruited to complete this feasibility study. METHOD We collected information about recruitment capability and sample characteristics, data collection procedure, acceptability of the training programme, resources required, and participants' responses to the intervention. Participants completed all the items and we had little missing data. Participants did not face any difficulty answering the questionnaires or performing the tests. Therefore, we could conclude data collection was feasible moving forward to perform larger efficacy trials. The acceptability of the wheelchair maintenance programme was more than 90%. There was a statistically significant improvement in wheelchair maintenance knowledge test and total rolling resistance. Confidence of mentees increased significantly after the training. Improvements in the 3-cone test and the 6-min push test results were not significant. CONCLUSIONS If recruitment and scheduling challenges can be overcome, our data suggested that it is feasible to conduct a larger experimental study to test the efficacy of the programme.Implications for RehabilitationWheelchair maintenance skills are important to help wheelchair users keep their wheelchairs working safely and efficiently.The findings from this study suggest that a peer-led wheelchair maintenance training programme may improve participants' wheelchair maintenance knowledge and maintenance self-confidence.The study also suggests that a peer-led wheelchair maintenance training programme may decrease the rolling resistance of participants' wheelchairs.A larger clinical trial is needed to demonstrate the efficacy of this intervention authoritatively.

Abstract
Background: The aging is a multi-faceted process comprising both-the physical and mental alterations. Thus, the aim of the study was to evaluate the variables affecting the psychophysical state of the elderly people using wheelchairs and living in nursing homes (NH). Methods: 165 older wheelchair users were included in the study after meeting the inclusion criteria and expressing written consent. The assessment involved cognitive functioning, depression, body balance and flexibility, lung capacity and upper limbs dexterity, strenght and endurance. The results showed negative correlation between depression and balance, upper limb dexterity and endurance and shoulder flexion. A positive correlation between cognitive functioning and balance, upper limb dexterity, strenght and endurance, lung capacity and joint mobility was determined. Also, the study proved positive correlation between daily functioning and functional fitness, muscle strength and endurance, body flexibility, joint mobility. The regression analysis showed that better scores in balance test and joint mobility implied with higher scores in cognitive functioning. The most important determinants of functional fitness were balance, hand grip strenght and joint mobility. Conclusion: The future study should be focused on developing interventions aimed at senior wheelchair users living in NHs to prevent the deterioration of their mental and physical fitness.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the relationships among Assistive Technology (AT) use, race, type of disability and selected other demographic characteristics. METHOD Using 2009 National Health Interview Survey, descriptive statistics, statistical interactions and binary logistic regression were performed to identify, contrast and predict the likelihood of using AT based on the type of disability among African Americans (AAs) and European Americans (EAs). RESULTS We found that more AAs (10% within group proportion of total AAs) used AT compared to EAs (7.5% within group proportion of total EAs). Physical (p < 0.001), auditory (p = 0.028) and emotional (p = 0.008) impairments were statistically significant predictors of AT use. However, physical impairment as a predictor of AT use was greater among AAs (OR = 222.49, CI: 64.04-773.04, p < 0.001) than EAs (OR = 50.77, CI: 31.78-81.12, p < 0.001). EAs had a greater number of disabling conditions that predict the use of AT than AAs, whereas AAs had more demographic characteristics beyond race that predict AT use than EAs. CONCLUSIONS Disparities were observed in AT usage by disability types and demographic characteristics between AAs and EAs. Moreover, the predictive strength of AT usage based on disability types and other demographic variables differed by races. Overall, the findings about the different relationships among race, disability type, and AT use are found. Implications for Rehabilitation The finding may inform the development of initiatives by rehabilitation leaders to encourage the use of AT by AAs and EAs according to their type of impairment. Having identified physical impairment as statistically significant predictor of AT use greater among AAs, rehabilitation leaders should ensure that people living with those types of disability have access to the corresponding type of AT and can use them effectively.
