Mothers' experiences of privacy in neonatal intensive care units: A qualitative study

BACKGROUND

Examining the privacy experiences of mothers in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) can play a crucial role in bolstering patient privacy safeguards and elevating the overall quality of health care. However, our understanding of mothers' experiences regarding privacy issues they may face after their infants' hospitalization in the NICU is limited.

AIM

This study aimed to investigate the experiences of mothers concerning privacy within NICUs to contribute valuable insights for improving infant care and privacy protection.

DESIGN

A qualitative content analysis using a conventional approach was conducted. A total of 18 participants, with diverse sociodemographic backgrounds, were interviewed using open-ended questions. Qualitative content analysis was undertaken for data analysis.

SETTING

The study was conducted in the NICU of an urban teaching hospital in Iran.

RESULTS

The study identified four main themes: 'understanding of privacy', 'fluctuating respect for privacy', 'efforts to maintain privacy' and 'privacy barriers'. Participants viewed privacy as multidimensional, influenced by cultural and religious factors. Respect for privacy varied, with instances of both adherence and violation. Mothers employed strategies to preserve privacy, emphasizing the importance of their infants' privacy. Privacy barriers included hospital attire, the physical space of the NICU, inhomogeneous human resources and insufficient supervision and training.

CONCLUSION

This study, the first of its kind in the NICU context, provides valuable insights into maternal experiences of privacy. Integrating these insights into practice and future research can contribute to creating more empathetic and privacy-respecting NICU environments.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

Health care providers can use these findings to enhance support for mothers, potentially reshaping physical spaces and communication practices within NICUs.

Perception of Privacy: An Ethnocentric Study of Turkish Muslim Female Surgical Patients

PURPOSE

This study aimed to investigate the perception of privacy among Turkish Muslim female patients who have undergone surgery.

DESIGN

A descriptive-qualitative study design was employed.

METHODS

In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 study participants.

FINDINGS

The findings revealed three main themes and two subthemes. The main themes were physical privacy, the influence of culture, and responses to privacy violations. The subthemes pertained solely to responses to privacy violations and included behavioral and emotional responses.

CONCLUSIONS

The participants' perception of privacy was primarily focused on the physical aspects of privacy. Muslim and Turkish cultures played a significant role in shaping the patients' perception of privacy. The participants reported experiencing emotional and behavioral responses when their privacy was violated. This study reveals the perception of privacy among 10 Turkish Muslim female patients, emphasizing the significance of understanding and considering this perception in nursing care.

Patients' expectations of and experiences with psychosocial care needs in perioperative nursing: a descriptive study

BACKGROUND

Meeting inpatients' psychosocial care needs is essential for their wellbeing, recovery, and positive experiences. This study aimed to describe and compare surgical inpatients' subjective perceptions of the importance of fundamental psychosocial and overall care received.

METHODS

A descriptive study with a convenient sample was conducted from September 2019 to April 2020. A total of 194 surgical inpatients from Norway and Denmark answered a perioperative user participation questionnaire on the day of discharge. The questionnaire was previously face- and content validated. The questionnaire assessed patients' sociodemographic characteristics and four dimensions of fundamental care domains: Psychosocial, Relational, Physical, and System level. This study reports the results from the psychosocial domain. Descriptive statistics including frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations were used to analyze background information variables. The congruency between participants' expectations of and experiences with psychosocial care is presented.

RESULTS

The inpatients expected (and experienced) the healthcare personnel to treat them with respect and dignity, and to be involved and informed throughout their perioperative care. The average ratings regarding these aspects of psychosocial care needs were 72.1-93.8%. There was congruency between patients' perceptions of the subjective importance (SI) of psychosocial fundamental care and their perceived reality (PR) of care. Congruency between high SI and high PR ranged from 59.1 to 92.2%, and congruency between low SI and low PR ranged from 0 to 6.6%. Incongruency between SI and PR varied between 5.9 and 39.6% and was mainly related to higher PR than SI. We found no association between education level, sex, length of stay, age, and patient expectations of or experiences with psychosocial care needs.

CONCLUSIONS

Surgical inpatients in Norway and Denmark experience respectful and dignified treatment, and they feel involved and informed in their perioperative care. It is important to include patient perspectives in further research to avoid missed care and disconnection between what patients prefer and what healthcare personnel plan to do. Understanding patient preferences might also lead to less stress and workload for healthcare personnel.

The Parturient Women's Privacy Preservation in the Delivery Rooms: A Qualitative Study

Introduction: Parturient women's privacy preservation and respectful maternity care (RMC) in delivery room is an important principle in the high quality of midwifery care to achieve maternal satisfaction and positive childbirth experience. Hence, it is essential to make natural vaginal delivery (NVD) a positive experience and increase the mothers' satisfaction. This study aimed to investigate the privacy preservation of parturient women's in the delivery room. Methods: Using conventional content analysis, this qualitative study was conducted from June 2018 to December 2020 at two hospitals and three health centers in Shahroud, Iran. Purposeful sampling was employed and it was continued till data saturation through in-depth interviews with 37 participants. Results: The results of interviews with 21 women with NVD experience and 16 maternity health service providers resulted in the extraction of four themes including physical, spiritual-mental, informational, and social privacy. Conclusion: Various mechanisms were found to promote the privacy and satisfaction of parturient women in the delivery room. They included the necessity continuous education, monitoring about mother's privacy preservation and intervention to improve effective communication skills among staff in delivery rooms.

Research output of Iran over the past two years: Contributions from the European Journal of Translational Myology

Over the last two decades, all branches of science and technology have rapidly progressed, including the medical area. In Middle Eastern countries, including Iran, the increased growth of technology and science production has led to this rapid medical progress. Recent evidence has revealed that the increase in the number of scientific papers generated in Iran after the Iraqi imposed war against Iran has been eight times that in six main countries in the Middle East, including Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Syria. Although Iran’s output in sciences has been still small in comparison to developed countries, it has significantly grown in the last decade, which is hoped to continue to increase and improve. The current paper shows a portion of the science production in Iran over the past two years based on papers published in the European Journal of Translational Myology in 2020 and 2021. Although the Issue 32(1), 2022 in a special section contains several typescripts from Iran, they were not included in our analysis since they have not been yet indexed in the Scopus database. However, our report would encourage researchers of diverse nationalities to take part in research works and author joint papers. Further, this paper can be used to rate the universities and research centers regarding their science output, as well as being beneficial to university students, lecturers, and governments.

Affecting Factors of Parturient Women's Privacy Preservation in The Maternity Ward: A Qualitative Study

Objective: Different factors have an important role in the positive and negative childbirth experiences of the mothers. The parturient mother's privacy preservation is one of the factors for increasing the mothers' satisfaction consistent with natural childbirth. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the factors affecting the parturient mother's privacy preservation. Materials and methods: Content analysis was used in this qualitative study that is based on the semi structured individual interviews with women who had experienced natural vaginal delivery, midwives, and the specialist in a maternity ward from 2018 to 2021 in Shahroud, Iran. The collected data were analyzed simultaneously with the sampling procedure using a five-step qualitative content analysis method. To ensure the robustness of the data, Lincoln and Guba's four criteria (credibility, dependability, confirmability, and transferability) were used. Results: The findings of the study with 40 participants resulted in the extraction of 28 codes, 9 subcategories, and 2 main categories entitled extra-and intra personal factors affecting the mother's privacy. Conclusion: To foster the mother's awareness of her rights and privacy during pregnancy and delivery, continuous education, monitoring, and evaluating both the students and the staff to respect preserving the mother's privacy is necessary to develop an instrument to measure the preservation of the mother's privacy in the maternity ward.

Privacy, or the Lack Thereof, and Its Implications for Dignity in Mobile COVID-19 Testing

INTRODUCTION

Chicago's COVID-19 Rapid Response Team (CRRT) is a decentralized, interprofessional group of nurses, residents, students, and faculty who provide free COVID-19 testing for those living or working in congregate settings (i.e., shelters, long term care facilities, prisons and encampments) due to their increased risk. Individuals within these vulnerable populations regularly experience stigma, a lack of privacy, and healthcare discrimination as they are often in low-income and underserved communities. The CRRT tests in settings that are necessarily large (cafeterias, meeting areas, gymnasiums, recreation rooms), and provide little physical privacy. Regardless of patient circumstances, respecting patient dignity is a professional standard of care, and patient privacy is consistent with that standard.

METHODS

Guided by trauma-informed care techniques, emancipatory nursing practice, and cultural safety methodology, student members of the CRRT initiated a project focused on expanding physical privacy protection for those undergoing COVID-19 testing.

CONCLUSION

Though the introduction of a portable privacy screen started as an initiative to safeguard the dignity for underserved populations, this call to action implores current and future health care providers to prioritize the ethical treatment of those most vulnerable by advocating for patient dignity and privacy.
