Abstract
The prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) continues to rise, making it one of the most prevalent chronic liver disorders. MASLD encompasses a range of liver pathologies, from simple steatosis to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) with inflammation, hepatocyte damage, and fibrosis. Interestingly, the liver exhibits close intercommunication with fatty tissue. In fact, adipose tissue could contribute to the etiology and advancement of MASLD, acting as an endocrine organ that releases several hormones and cytokines, with the adipokines assuming a pivotal role. The levels of adipokines in the blood are altered in people with MASLD, and recent research has shed light on the crucial role played by adipokines in regulating energy expenditure, inflammation, and fibrosis in MASLD. However, MASLD disease is a multifaceted condition that affects various aspects of health beyond liver function, including its impact on hemostasis. The alterations in coagulation mechanisms and endothelial and platelet functions may play a role in the increased vulnerability and severity of MASLD. Therefore, more attention is being given to imbalanced adipokines as causative agents in causing disturbances in hemostasis in MASLD. Metabolic inflammation and hepatic injury are fundamental components of MASLD, and the interrelation between these biological components and the hemostasis pathway is delineated by reciprocal influences, as well as the induction of alterations. Adipokines have the potential to serve as the shared elements within this complex interrelationship. The objective of this review is to thoroughly examine the existing scientific knowledge on the impairment of hemostasis in MASLD and its connection with adipokines, with the aim of enhancing our comprehension of the disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The resistin/uric index has been considered a prognostic factor for identifying young people with obesity. Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome (MS) are an important health problem in females. AIMS The objective of this work was to evaluate the relationship of resistin/acid uric index with Metabolic Syndrome on Caucasian females with obesity. METHODS We conducted a cross sectional study in 571 females with obesity. Measurements of anthropometric parameters, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, insulin concentration, insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), lipid profile, C reactive protein, uric acid, resistin and prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome were determined. The resistin/uric acid index was calculated. RESULTS In total, 249 subjects had MS (43.6%). We detected higher levels in the following parameters (Delta; p values); waist circumference (3.1 ± 0.5 cm; p = 0.04), systolic blood pressure (5.3 ± 3.6 mmHg; p = 0.01), diastolic blood pressure (2.3 ± 0.4 mmHg; p = 0.02), glucose levels (7.5 ± 0.9 mg/dL; p = 0.01), insulin levels (2.5 ± 0.3 UI/L; p = 0.02), HOMA-IR (0.7 ± 0.2 units; p = 0.03), uric acid levels (0.9 ± 0.2 mg/dl; p = 0.01), resistin levels (4.1 ± 0.4 ng/dl; p = 0.01) and resistin/uric acid index (0.61 ± 0.01 mg/dl; p = 0.02) in subjects of the high resistin/uric acid index group than low index group. Logistic regression analysis reported a high percentage of hyperglycemia (OR = 1.77, 95% CI = 1.10-2.92; p = 0.02), hypertension (OR = 1.91, 95% CI = 1.36-3.01; p = 0.01), central obesity (OR = 1.48, 95% CI = 1.15-1.84; p = 0.03) and metabolic syndrome percentage (OR = 1.71, 95% CI = 1.22-2.69; p = 0.02) in high resistin/uric acid index group. CONCLUSIONS Resistin/uric acid index is related with Metabolic syndrome (MS) risk and criteria of it in a population of Caucasian females with obesity and this index is a correlated with glucose levels, insulin levels and insulin resistance (HOMA-IR).

Abstract
There is a continuous worldwide increase in incidences of metabolic
syndrome (MetS) reaching about a quarter of the world’s population.
Thus, studies that allow for a robust diagnosis of MetS are of
paramount importance from an economic and medical point of view. This
study was carried out in a group of men diagnosed with MetS using
consensus definition criteria that included the definitions of the
International Diabetes Foundation and Diabetes Federation and the
American Heart Association/National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
The control group consisted of men for whom the parameters that define
the MetS were in the norm. This study analyzed statistical differences
between MetS and healthy men and the correlations between the set of
14 potential markers of MetS, that is, between body mass index, total
cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density
lipoprotein, triglycerides, cortisol, adiponectin, monocyte
chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), C-reactive protein (CRP), adipsin,
leptin, resistin, and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI)-1. This
report revealed a significant difference between MetS and healthy men
in most of the parameters studied. Furthermore, a strong positive
correlation between cortisol levels and body mass index was
demonstrated. Furthermore, MCP-1 levels in men with MetS were
significantly higher than their levels in healthy men. Finally, a
strong positive correlation was also observed between adiponectin and
adipsin in Mets men. Thus, this study reveals the potential usefulness
of adiponectin, MCP-1, adipsin, leptin, resistin, and PAI-1 as markers
of MetS in adult men.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of metabolic indicators that increase the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Visceral obesity and factors derived from altered adipose tissue, adipokines, play critical roles in the development of metabolic syndrome. Although the adipokines leptin and adiponectin improve insulin sensitivity, others contribute to the development of glucose intolerance, including visfatin, fetuin-A, resistin, and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1). Leptin and adiponectin increase fatty acid oxidation, prevent foam cell formation, and improve lipid metabolism, while visfatin, fetuin-A, PAI-1, and resistin have pro-atherogenic properties. In this review, we briefly summarize the role of various adipokines in the development of metabolic syndrome, focusing on glucose homeostasis and lipid metabolism.

Abstract
AIM Metabolic syndrome (MS) refers to a group of co-morbidities which include central obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia. Previously, we reported that childhood lymphatic filariasis (LF) confers significant protection against type-1 and type-2 forms of diabetes, by means of immunomodulation. In the present study, we studied the effect of LF on endocrine dysfunction in MS and Non-MS patients in baseline and after 10 years of follow-up. METHODS We quantified the serum levels of pancreatic hormones (insulin and glucagon), incretins (Ghrelin, GIP and GLP-1) and adipokines (leptin, adiponectin, adipsin, visfatin, PAI-1 and resistin) by multiplex bead array system. RESULTS MS (both LF- and LF+) subjects had increased insulin levels compared to NMS (both LF- and LF+) subjects. MS-LF+ subjects had significantly increased levels of glucagon, ghrelin, GIP and GLP-1 and decreased levels of adipsin, compared to MS-LF- subjects. Interestingly this effect was short-lived and was not seen in the follow-up samples. CONCLUSION Overall, LF infection might confer limited short-term beneficial effects against MS, by means of modulating the incretin levels,either directly or indirectly.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome is one of the major risk factors that lead to various serious complications like cardiovascular abnormalities, hyperlipidemia and diabetes. Its co-incidence with other organs dysfunction results in further deterioration of the condition or precipitation of other dysfunctions. This study aimed at studying the changes in the hepatic functions after the co-incidence of the high fat or fructose diets induced metabolic syndrome along with the gentamicin induced nephrotoxicity. Briefly, six groups of male Sprague Daley rats (n = 10-12) were fed with different feeding protocols; viz; standard rodent's chow, an experimental high fat or high fructose diets feedings. For each, two groups were allocated that one of them was injected with normal saline and the other with 80 mg/kg/day I.P gentamicin during the last 24 days of the feeding period. The rats were monitored for changes in the metabolic data, glycemic control, lipid profile, renal and hepatic functions, oxidative stress and the inflammatory response. The study revealed stronger hepatic changes in the renal failure groups fed with the high fat diet rather than that in the groups fed with the high fructose diet. Although, the latter experienced a stronger deterioration in the glycemic control. The study suggests that the incidence of the hepatic changes is more linked to the incidence of the deterioration in the lipids profile that was observed after the high fat diet feeding. Overall, the co-incidence of the high fat diet induced metabolic syndrome along with the renal failure constitutes a risk factor for the hepatic dysfunction.

Abstract
Arsenic poisoning is one of the most serious health hazards of recent times. It has been estimated that more than 200 million people of about 105 countries in the world are affected due to arsenic poisoning. Except mitigation, there is no such mode by which the population can be prevented from being exposed to arsenic. Tinospora cordifolia (T. cordifolia) is widely used in the folk medicine system for the treatment of various diseases. Hence, the aim of the present study was to investigate the antidote effects of ethanolic extract of T. cordifolia stem against arsenic induced hepato-renal toxicity in rat model. Twenty-four male Charles Foster rats (weighing 160-180 g) were randomly divided into two groups, where six rats were used as control group. Eighteen rats were orally treated with arsenic at the dose of 8 mg/kg body weight for 90 days daily and then further divided into three sub groups (n = 6 each). Sub group I-arsenic treated rats, were sacrificed after treatment; sub group II rats were used as arsenic control and the sub group III rats were administrated with T. cordifolia at the dose of 400 mg/kg body weight/day for 90 days. After the completion of dose duration, all the control and treatment group rats were sacrificed to evaluate the various parameters. Arsenic induced rats had significantly (p < 0.0001) altered biochemical serum levels of SGPT, SGOT, ALP, total bilirubin, urea, uric acid, creatinine and albumin; But, after the administration of T. cordifolia there was significant (p < 0.0001) restoration observed in these liver and kidney function parameters. The T. cordifolia administration also significantly (p < 0.0001) restored the serum MDA levels and arsenic concentration in blood, liver and kidney tissues, as well as significant (p < 0.0001) improvement in haematological variables. In histopathological study, the arsenic treated rats showed degenerative changes in the liver and kidney tissues such as lesions and vacuolizations in hepatocytes and nephrocytes respectively. However, after the administration with T. cordifolia rats, there was considerably significant restoration in liver and kidney tissues. The entire study suggests that arsenic caused severe damage to the liver and kidney at haematological, biochemical and histopathological levels in rats. However, T. cordifolia played the vital role to combat the arsenic induced toxicity in rats. Hence, T. cordifolia might be used as a nutritional supplement to combat the arsenic led toxicity among the exposed population.

Estimation of genetic diversity and population structure in Tinospora cordifolia using SSR markers. 3 Biotech 2020; 10:310. Abstract
Thirty polymorphic SSRs, derived from RNA sequencing of Tinospora cordifolia (willd.), were utilized for genetic diversity and population structure evaluation among 96 accessions collected from ten different geographical regions of India. A total of 7611 SSRs were identified from 268149 transcripts. Of all SSR loci, 69.07% of them were tri-nucleotide repeat motifs, followed by di-nucleotide repeat motifs (12.82%). A total of 230 alleles were generated by 30 SSRs with an average of 7.67 alleles per locus with comparatively higher polymorphic information content (average 0.68). The expected (He) and observed (Ho) heterozygosity means were 0.71 and 0.12, respectively. All the loci showed significant deviation from Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium (HWE). The neighbor joining clustering based on jaccard's coefficient grouped all the 96 accessions into three major cluster which was also in congruence with model-based structure plot. The result of molecular variance (AMOVA) revealed higher genetic variance within populations than among populations. The result reflects an existence of high level of genetic diversity in the collected accessions of T. cordifolia. The accessions Tc131, Tc31, Tc129, Tc38, Tc16, Tc59, Tc60, Tc17, Tc106 and Tc130 was found to be potential and diverse in nature and the SSRs TCSSR-18, TCSSR-37, TCTSSR-59, TCTSSR-92, TCTSSR-123 and TCTSSR-126 as potential markers. These accessions and newly developed SSR markers provide valuable resource and could be strategically utilized for further genetic improvement of T. cordifolia.

Abstract
Tinospora cordifolia (TC) is scientifically proven immunomodulatory drug being used for centuries. Ancient literature reported that inter-specific interactions change medicinal properties of TC. Thus, the current study is aimed to understand the influence of interspecific biotic interactions on chemo-profiles of TC. To explore it, TC samples collected from six co-occurring plants, i.e. Azarditchita indica, Acacia nilotica, Albezia lebbeck, Ficus benghalensis, Tamarandus indica and Acacia leucophloea were analyzed by HPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS. Mass data were subjected to multivariate analysis. Support vector machines (SVMs) was found to be best classifier (r2 < 0.93). Data analysis showed the specific compounds in all TC due to inter-specific interactions. Data were further analyzed with SNK post-hoc test followed by permutative (n = 50) Bonferroni FDR multiple testing correction. The compound without any missing values reduced the number of variables to 133 (p < 0.01). Statistical analysis revealed that TC having interactions with A.lebbeck and A. nilotica formed the most distant groups. However, TC co-occurred with A. indica showed the highest number of up-regulated metabolites, including jatrorrhizine, chrysin, peonidin, 6-methylcoumarin and some terpenoids. Some metabolites, including jatrorrhizine and magnoflorine were quantified to confirm the accuracy of qualitative analysis. Results demonstrated the influence of inter-specific biotic interactions on TC chemo-profiles, hence its medicinal properties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is characterized as a cluster of metabolic disorder including increased blood pressure, elevated blood glucose level, high cholesterol level and visceral fat obesity. Polypeptide hormones such as adiponectin and resistin play a significant role in glucose and lipids metabolism, liver and pancreas function. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum adiponectin and resistin with MetS criteria among Temiar subtribe in Kuala Betis. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross sectional study involved 123 subjects from Temiar subtribe in Kuala Betis, Gua Musang, Kelantan. MetS criteria were measured according to standard protocol by modified National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP III) guideline. Anthropometric and biochemical measurements were performed including serum adiponectin and resistin for every study subjects. RESULTS Serum adiponectin was significantly lower in MetS subjects (7.98 ± 5.65 ng/ml) but serum resistin was found to be significantly higher in MetS subjects (11.22 ± 6.34 ng/ml) compared to non-MetS subjects with p < 0.001 and p = 0.002 respectively. Serum adiponectin was negatively correlated with most of the cardio-metabolic risk factors; BMI, waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, triglyceride and total cholesterol. Serum resistin was found to be positively correlated with BMI, waist circumference, fasting blood glucose and total cholesterol. CONCLUSION The difference in serum adiponectin and resistin level among MetS individuals indicated the potential of serum adiponectin and resistin to be used as a biomarker for the diagnosis of MetS among Temiar subtribe.

Abstract
Stressors of different kinds adversely affect life history parameters like growth, development, and reproduction. Organisms overcome the negative impact of environmental stressors and strive to reach a tolerant state through genetic and metabolic activities. Ayurvedic formulations are reported to have life trait benefitting properties which improve capacity to withstand stress and tolerate adverse conditions. Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) and Madhuyashti (Glycirrhiza glabra) Ayurvedic formulations are known to have immunomodulatory, intellect promoting, and adaptogenic properties, thus favoring good health and healthy aging. Present study investigates the efficacy of Guduchi and Madhuyashti in providing tolerance to different stresses and the underlying mechanisms using the Drosophila model. Drosophila larvae/flies fed on Guduchi or Madhuyashti were better thermo-protected, which correlated with increased expression of heat shock genes even without the heat shock. Guduchi or Madhuyashti feeding also increased antimicrobial peptide expression, thus providing better tolerance to pathogenic assaults. Feeding on Guduchi- or Madhuyashti- supplemented food also enhanced starvation and desiccation tolerance. However, neither of these formulations provided beneficial effects when grown under crowded conditions or when exposed to oxidative stressors.

Abstract
Aflatoxin is among the natural toxins that cause serious side effects on living things. Diosmin is also one of the compounds with broad pharmacological effects. In this study, the effects on the oxidant/antioxidant system of 50 mg/kg body weight/day dose of diosmin, aflatoxin (500 μg/kg body weight/day), and combined aflatoxin (500 μg/kg body weight/day) plus diosmin (50 mg/kg body weight/day) given to the stomach via catheter female adult Wistar Albino rats is examined. Forty rats were used in the experiment, and these animals were randomly allocated to four equal groups. The test phase lasted 21 days, and blood samples and tissue (liver and kidney) samples were taken after this period was over. Some biochemical parameters (glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, uric acid, lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, total protein, albumin) and levels of malondialdehyde, nitric oxide, and 4-hydroxynonenal and activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase were analyzed in the samples. The aflatoxin administered over the period indicated a significant increase in levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO), and 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) in all tissues and blood samples. Therewithal, the activity of antioxidant enzymes showed a change in the decreasing direction. Biochemical parameters of the group in which aflatoxin were administered alone changed unfavorably. Parallel effects were also observed in the histopathological findings of this group. The results showed that aflatoxin changed antioxidant/oxidant balance in favor of oxidant and eventually led to lipid peroxidation. Diosmin administration to aflatoxin-treated animals resulted in positive changes in antioxidant enzyme activities while the levels of MDA, NO, and 4-HNE were reduced in all tissues and blood samples examined. Diosmin alleviates the oxidative stress caused by aflatoxin. Similar improvement was observed in biochemical parameters of this group as well as in liver and kidney histopathology. No significant change was observed in the group treated with diosmin alone in terms of the parameters examined and histologic findings. As a result, diosmin may be included in compounds that can be used as a therapeutic and prophylactic agent in the event of the formation of aflatoxin exposure and poisoning in animals.

Abstract
Diabetes is estimated to be one of the major causes of deaths in most countries due to its high prevalence rate, which was 8.8% in 2015. Hyperglycemia detected during pregnancy is known as gestational diabetes mellitus and it increases the potential risk of development of Type 2 diabetes in mothers with its varying prevalence rate of 1-14% in different populations. It also leads to the higher risk of developing abnormal glucose tolerance and obesity in their child at an early age. Recent studies show that potential mediators of insulin resistance such as adipokines - adiponectin, leptin and resistin are important for glucose and lipid metabolism. Adipokines are directly involved in the regulation of insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity in the liver, muscle and adipose tissue. It is also involved in inflammation, adipose tissue accumulation, adverse fat distribution and subsequently affects glucose metabolism. This review highlights the role of resistin (an adipokine) in the development of gestational diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Schizophrenia is associated with excess cardiovascular comorbidity and mortality related to lifestyle factors, such as lack of physical activity, poor diet, and smoking. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome is increased among patients with schizophrenia, with the highest rates among patients on clozapine treatment. Smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, airway inflammation and obstruction, and adipose tissue and inflammatory marker activation are related in systemic inflammation. Low-grade inflammation is also associated with schizophrenia. Adipokine resistin is a biomarker involving several acute and chronic inflammatory states. However, the inflammatory role of resistin is so far inconclusive and studies in schizophrenia are scanty. AIMS The aim of the present study was to explore the role of serum resistin as an inflammatory marker in patients with schizophrenia on clozapine treatment. METHODS Associations between serum levels of resistin and some other selected cytokines/adipokines (adiponectin, leptin, adipsin, IL-6, IL-1Ra, TNF-α, hs-CRP) and metabolic markers in 190 patients with schizophrenia on clozapine treatment were studied using a cross-sectional study design. RESULTS Among male patients especially, smokers had higher levels of resistin than non-smokers, and among smokers resistin levels were associated with IL-1Ra and hs-CRP levels. In the whole patient group levels of resistin associated with levels of IL-1Ra, and among male patients with low HDL-cholesterol. CONCLUSIONS Resistin is a biomarker of systemic inflammation associated with smoking among patients with schizophrenia on clozapine treatment. Resistin might have a role as a marker of cardiovascular comorbidity.

Abstract
AIMS There is increasing evidence linking a shift work schedule with various adverse health effects. The present study aimed to examine the relationship between shift work and the metabolic syndrome (MetS) in male steel workers, and also the possible mechanism of shift work-related metabolic derangements. METHODS A total of 1732 men aged 42 ± 8 years were enrolled in this cross-sectional study, including 862 day workers and 870 shift workers. Circulating levels of resistin were measured by ELISA using monoclonal specific antibodies. RESULTS The shift workers had higher rates of MetS and its components (central obesity, hypertension, and hypertriglyceridemia) than the day workers. In multiple logistic regression analysis, shift work was independently associated with MetS. In further analysis, the shift workers had elevated circulating levels of resistin (13 ± 10 vs. 10 ± 7 ng/mL) and total white blood cell (WBC) count (6.865 ± 1.819 vs. 6.304 ± 1.547 109/L) than the day workers. In addition, both resistin level and total WBC count were significantly associated with shift work, MetS, and its components (body mass index, fasting glucose, triglyceride, and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels), and plasma resistin levels were significantly associated with total WBC count (β = 0.34, p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION Shift work was independently associated with MetS in male steel workers. Resistin and WBC count were associated with shift work-related metabolic derangements.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between tissue distributions of modified Wuzi Yanzong prescription (, MWP) in rats and meridian tropism theory. METHODS A high-performance liquid chromatography with Fourier transform-mass spectrometry (HPLC-FT) method was used to identify the metabolites of MWP in different tissues of rats after continued oral administration of MWP for 7 days. The relationship between MWP and meridian tropism theory was studied according to the tissue distributions of the metabolites of MWP in rats and the relevant literature. RESULTS Nineteen metabolites, mainly flavanoid compounds, were detected in the different rat tissues and classified to each herb in MWP. Further, it was able to establish that the tissue distributions of the metabolites of MWP were consistent with the descriptions of meridian tropism of MWP available in literature, this result might be useful in clarifying the mechanism of MWP on meridian tropism. In the long run, these data might provide scientific evidence of the meridian tropism theory to further promote the reasonable, effective utilization, and modernization of Chinese medicine. CONCLUSION The tissue distributions of MWP in vivo were consistent with the descriptions of meridian tropism of MWP.

Abstract
Biomarkers of the metabolic syndrome are divided into four subgroups. Although dividing them in groups has some limitations, it can be used to draw some conclusions. In a first part, the dyslipidemias and markers of oxidative stress are discussed, while inflammatory markers and cardiometabolic biomarkers are reviewed in a second part. For most of them, the biochemical background and clinical significance are discussed, although here also a well-cut separation cannot always be made. Altered levels cannot always be claimed as the cause, risk, or consequence of the syndrome. Several factors are interrelated to each other and act in a concerted, antagonistic, synergistic, or modulating way. Most important conclusions are summarized at the end of every reviewed subgroup. Genetic biomarkers or influences of various food components on concentration levels are not included in this review article.

Abstract
Background Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a clinical constellation comprising risk factors associated with developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Resistin has been suggested as a linkage between obesity, inflammation and type 2 diabetes. This study aimed to investigate resistin concentrations and hematological-biochemical parameters in MS subjects and controls, and to determine whether two resistin gene (RETN) polymorphisms (−420C>G & +299G>A) are linked to resistin levels and MS among Thais. Methods This case-control study was performed with 322 Thai volunteers: 160 MS subjects and 162 controls. Anthropometric parameters and hematological-biochemical variables were determined. The RETN −420C>G (rs1862513) and +299G>A (rs3745367) polymorphisms were genotyped by PCR-RFLP technique. Results The resistin levels of the MS group were significantly higher than those of the control group. Resistin levels were positively correlated with anthropometric parameters and WBC count in the MS group. According to RETN −420C>G polymorphism, MS subjects with the G allele (CG/GG) (3.9 μg/L) had significantly higher resistin concentrations than in subjects with the CC genotype (2.4 μg/L); with regard to RETN +299G>A polymorphism, carriers with the A allele (GA/AA) (3.8 μg/L) had significantly higher resistin levels than subjects with the GG genotype (2.7 μg/L), after adjusting for potential covariates. However, the RETN −420C>G and +299G>A polymorphisms were not found to be associated with MS, hematological-biochemical parameters and anthropometric variables. Conclusions These findings suggest resistin levels are linked with MS and the RETN −420C>G and +299G>A polymorphisms have impacted the circulating resistin concentrations. However, these two RETN polymorphisms probably do not influence susceptibility to MS among Thais.

Abstract
Background Liver histology remains the gold standard for assessing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Noninvasive serological markers have been developed to evaluate steatosis to avoid biopsy. In NAFLD patients, serum resistin was higher than those in control lean and obese patients. Objective of the study To investigate serum resistin and its receptor gene expression in liver biopsy as predictors for NAFLD severity. Patients and methods This study was conducted on 54 obese patients, with suspected fatty liver by ultrasound (excluding diabetic, alcoholic, hepatitis C virus antibody (HCVAb) or hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) positive patients). They were subjected to anthropometric measurements, laboratory studies including serum resistin, abdominal ultrasonography (US) and liver biopsy. The 15 lean subjects were included as a control group. According to biopsy results, patients were subdivided into nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) group (46 patients) and non-NASH group (8 patients). Results Significantly higher levels of resistin were detected in NAFLD patients compared to control subjects (p = 0.0001). Also, higher levels of resistin were recorded in NASH group compared to the non-NASH group; however, the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.584). Serum alanine aspirate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) were higher in NASH patients than non-NASH group (p = 0.223, p = 0.005 and p = 0.006 respectively). Abdominal US showed high sensitivity in NAFLD diagnosis (sensitivity of sonar in detecting steatosis grade compared to biopsy was 61% in grade 1, 25% in grade 2 and 75% in grade 3). Abstract
AFB1 is a mycotoxin which exerts their cytotoxicity through increasing oxidative damage in target organ. Kidney is one of target organs vulnerable to damage caused by AFB1. In this study, Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells were used to evaluate the AFB1-induced cell damage by the MTT assay. The results revealed that the toxic effect of AFB1 on MDCK cells is both dose and time dependent. Half maximal toxic concentration (IC50) was noted at 0.25 μg/ml of AFB1. Further, protective effect of six different concentrations (0.2, 0.8, 1, 2, 4, and 8 μM) of selenomethionine (SeMet) was observed against 0.25 μg/ml of AFB1-induced damage. The results showed that 0.25 μg/ml of AFB1 caused significant increase in oxidative stress, which was demonstrated by significant increase of malondialdehyde (MDA) level, reduction of intracellular GSH level, as well as GPX1 activity and mRNA level in MDCK cells when compared with control. SeMet protected the cells from AFB1-induced oxidative damage in a dose-dependant manner. Good protection could be achieved between 1 and 4 μM of concentration. Amid this range, MDA level significantly decreased while intracellular GSH level and GPX1 activity in addition to mRNA level significantly increased. Moreover, cell viability was significantly improved. It could be concluded that SeMet is a potential antioxidative agent to alleviate AFB1-induced oxidative stress.

Abstract
A total of 45 patients with acute hepatitis were detected in a medical facility of Bangladesh over a period of 6 months. All of them were physicians, nurses, students or employees of the hospital. About 50% of these patients suffered from acute hepatitis within a period of 2 months. All of them had clinical and biochemical evidences of acute hepatitis. All of them shared common working places as well as common dining and cooking facilities. Although the disease was supposed to be caused by hepatitis viruses, none of them were expressing IgM type antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (IgM anti-HBc) or hepatitis C virus (IgM anti-HCV). IgM type antibody to hepatitis A virus (IgM HAV) was detected in one patient and IgM type antibody to hepatitis E virus (anti-HEV IgM) were found in 14 patients. In conclusion, diagnosis of etiological agent of viral acute hepatitis constitutes a formidable challenge to the existing health care delivery system in developing countries as available serological and routine screening fails to find the proper etiological agent. Abstract
The study was designed to investigate the protective effect of esculin against pro-oxidant aflatoxin B1 (AFB1)-induced nephrotoxicity in mice. In this study toxicity was developed by oral administration of AFB1 at a dose of 66.60 μg/kg bw/day for 90 days in male Swiss albino mice. Esculin (150 mg/kg bw/0.2 ml/day) and standard compound ascorbic acid (300 mg/kg bw/0.2 ml/day) was given after 30 min of AFB1 administration for 90 days. Protective efficacy was assessed by measuring the levels of lipid peroxidation (LPO) and non-enzymatic antioxidants such as reduced glutathione (GSH) and also by measuring activities of enzymatic antioxidants such as glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), glutathione reductase (GR), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in kidney. Results were analysed at the 30(th), 60(th) and 90(th) day of the daily treatments, which showed a decrease in the level of LPO and an increase in the levels of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants. The protective effect of esculin was further proved by histopathological findings as it exhibited regenerative activities in mice renal tubules against AFB1-induced nephrotoxicity. The results obtained clearly demonstrate that the protective efficacy of esculin against pro-oxidant AFB1-induced nephrotoxicity in mice might be due to its antioxidants and free radical scavenging properties.

Abstract
With aging, an increased prevalence of a clustering of metabolic abnormalities has been observed. These abnormalities include obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and insulin resistance and are collectively known as metabolic syndrome (MetS), a low-grade, systemic, inflammatory condition associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other adverse health outcomes. A number of studies have demonstrated that centenarians' offspring have a significant survival advantage and a lower risk of developing the most important age-related diseases. They therefore represent one of the best models with which to study the familiar component of human longevity. The aim of this study was to determine if the offspring of centenarians (n = 265 subjects) showed a different prevalence of MetS in comparison to the offspring of non-long-lived parents (controls, n = 101 subjects). In addition, we assessed whether centenarians' offspring showed particular features of MetS and a distinct regulation of circulating adipokines, cytokines, and metabolic mediators. Although the prevalence of MetS was quite similar both in the offspring of centenarians and the controls, MetS-affected centenarians' offspring seemed healthier, more functionally fit, and had lower resistin levels. MetS prevalence did not change in centenarians' offspring across resistin, IGF-1, and resistin/IGF-1 ratio tertiles. On the other hand, in controls, MetS prevalence strongly increased across resistin tertiles and in the third resistin/IGF-1 ratio tertile, indicating a dramatic increase in MetS prevalence when the ratio between these two factors is unbalanced, with high levels of resistin and low levels of IGF-1.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity associated insulin resistance is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus. Resistin is recently reported to provide a link between obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus. We aimed to investigate the possible associations of resistin gene (RETN) polymorphisms with obesity, and to detect whether these polymorphisms are associated with glucose intolerance and type 2 diabetes mellitus in obese patients. METHODS One hundred and forty-five Egyptian obese patients with or without glucose intolerance and 155 unrelated healthy controls were enrolled in this study. Polymorphisms of RETN +299G>A and RETN -420 C>G gene were detected by polymerase chain reaction - restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Serum resistin was measured by ELISA. RESULTS RETN +299 AA and RETN -420 GG genotypes were significantly associated with obesity in Egyptian population. Moreover, the mutant alleles or genotypes of both examined polymorphisms were associated with impaired glucose tolerance and diabetes mellitus compared to normal glucose tolerant obese patients. Furthermore, our results revealed elevated waist/hip ratio, BMI, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose level, HOMA-IR, triglycerides, total cholesterol, resistin level, and decreased HDL cholesterol level in homozygote mutant genotypes carriers of both RETN polymorphisms among obese patients. CONCLUSION Resistin gene polymorphisms may play an important role in pathogenesis and susceptibility to obesity, impaired glucose tolerance, and type 2 diabetes mellitus in Egyptian population.

Abstract
Resistin has been implicated in coronary atherosclerotic disease and congestive heart failure. Recent studies have extended its involvement in peripheral artery disease. Despite some controversial data, the mainstream clinical literature supports that resistin is associated with both coronary and peripheral artery diseases including ischemic stroke. In this review, the multiple roles of resistin as screening, diagnostic, and prognostic marker for cardiovascular disease are discussed. The independence of resistin in disease prediction and diagnosis appears complicated by its confounders, such as C-reactive protein. A clear-cut biomarker function of resistin in cardiovascular disease needs be clarified by additional large-scale, well-designed prospective studies.
