Abstract
Sarcodon imbricatus (S. imbricatus), a well-known edible mushroom, is one of the most commonly consumed wild mushrooms in China because of its nutritional value. Previous studies have demonstrated that S. imbricatus has immunoregulatory activity. We previously described the potential anti-tumor activity of several types of mushrooms, including S. imbricatus. In this study, the results demonstrate that an aqueous extract of S. imbricatus (SIE) effectively inhibits the growth, migration, and invasion properties of breast cancer cells in vitro and reduces tumor growth in vivo. In addition, the SIE increased serum concentrations of interleukin (IL)-2, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α, natural killer cell activity and the viability of splenocytes and reduced the expression of programmed cell death-Ligand 1 (PD-L1) in 4T1 tumor-bearing mice. Collectively, these results are the first demonstration that the SIE has anti-tumor and immunomodulatory effects in the 4T1 mouse breast cancer model. These findings provide a scientific rationale for the potential therapeutic use of S. imbricatus in breast cancer patients.

Abstract
Mushrooms have an important role in sustainability since they have long been used as valuable food source and traditional medicine around the world. Regrettably, they are among the most rigorously affected populations, along with several plants and animals, due to the destructive activities of mankind. Thus the authentication and conservation of mushroom species are constantly needed to exploit the remarkable potential in them. In this perspective, an attempt has been made to identify and assess the biological attributes of psychedelic mushrooms collected from Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, India. The macromorphological features of the psychedelic mushroom DPT1 helped its presumptive identification and the molecular characters depicted by DNA marker revealed its close relationship with the genus Psilocybe. Accordingly, the psychedelic mushroom was identified as Psilocybe cubensis DPT1 and its crude ethyl acetate extract on analysis revealed the occurrence of phytoconstituents like alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins and carbohydrates. Moreover, it exhibited 80% larvicidal activity against Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito at 800 ppm concentration and an array of antibacterial effects with utmost susceptibility of Proteus vulgaris, and the identification of bioactive compounds by different analytical techniques substantiate that the bioactivities might be due to the presence of phytochemicals. The results of the study indicated that the extract of P. cubensis DPT1 having notable antibacterial and mosquito larvicidal efficacies which could be probed further for the isolation of medicinally important as well as bio-control compounds.

Abstract
A new p-terphenyl, 2',3'-diacetoxy-4,5,5',6',4'',5''-hexahydroxy-p-terphenyl (1), along with 12 known compounds were isolated from the fruiting bodies of Sarcodon imbricatus (Bankeraceae). Their structures were confirmed on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis and comparison with the spectral data in the literature. Compound 1 exhibited weak cytotoxicity against colon cancer SW480 and leukemia HL-60 cell lines, with IC50 values of 55.02 ± 1.79 μM and 44.71 ± 2.15 μM, respectively.

Abstract
The methanolic extract of the wild edible mushroom Cantharellus cibarius Fr. (chanterelle) was analyzed for in vitro antioxidative, cytotoxic, antihypertensive and antibacterial activities. Various primary and secondary metabolites were found. Phenols were the major antioxidant components found in the extract (49.8 mg g(-1)), followed by flavonoids, whose content was approximately 86% of the total phenol content. Antioxidant activity, measured by four different methods, was high for inhibition of lipid peroxidation (EC50 = 1.21 mg mL(-1)) and chelating ability (EC50 = 0.64 mg mL(-1)). The antioxidant activity of the C. cibarius methanol extract was achieved through chelating iron compared to hydrogen atom and/or electron transfer. The extract showed good selectivity in cytotoxicity on human cervix adenocarcinoma HeLa, breast carcinoma MDA-MB-453 and human myelogenous leukemia K562, compared to normal control human fetal lung fibroblasts MRC-5 and human lung bronchial epithelial cells BEAS-2B. The extract had inhibitory activity against angiotensin converting I enzyme (ACE) (IC50 = 0.063 mg mL(-1)). The extract revealed selective antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria with the highest potential against E. faecalis. The medicinal and health benefits, observed in wild C. cibarius mushroom, seem an additional reason for its traditional use as a popular delicacy food.

Abstract
The white button mushroom, Agaricus bisporus, is the most commonly
grown mushroom in Iran; however, there is a significant shortage of research on its
antioxidant activity and other medicinal properties. The aim of this study was to
evaluate antioxidant capacity of the methanolic extracts from four cultivated strains
and four Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS)-identified, Iranian wild isolates of
A. bisporus. Evaluations were made for total
phenols, flavonoids and anthocyanins, and 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)
scavenging activity. Overall, results showed that all the wild isolates exhibited
significantly lower DPPH-derived EC50, compared to the cultivated strains
(p < 0.05). A relatively high relationship was observed between total phenols and
flavonoids or anthocyanins (r2 > 0.60). However, these constituents
could not statistically differentiate the group of wild samples from the cultivated
ones, and there was low correlation with the DPPH-derived EC50s
(r2 < 0.40). In conclusion, comparisons showed that wild isolate 4
and cultivated strains A15 and H1 had higher antioxidant capacity than the others (p
< 0.05). This result identifies these mushrooms as good candidates for further
investigation.

Oral treatment with Euterpe oleracea Mart. (açaí) extract improves cardiac dysfunction and exercise intolerance in rats subjected to myocardial infarction. Abstract
Background This study was designed to evaluate the cardioprotective effects of Euterpe oleracea Mart., popularly known as “açaí”, on rats subjected to myocardial infarction (MI). Methods Hydroalcoholic extracts of açaí were obtained from a decoction of the seeds. Two male Wistar rat groups were delineated: 1) the sham-operated group (control, n = 6), with no surgical amendment, and 2) the MI group (n = 12), in which the anterior descendent coronary artery was occluded during surgery. MI group was divided into two subgroups, in which rats were either treated with hydroalcoholic extract of Euterpe oleracea seeds (100 mg/kg/day p.o.) or received no treatment. Treatment began on the day of surgery, and lasted 4 weeks. Subsequently, rats were subject to an exercise test protocol, hemodynamic evaluation, and histological analysis of the left ventricle. Groups were compared using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Dunnett’s test. Results The total running distance of sham rats was 1339.0 ± 276.6 m, MI rats was 177.6 ± 15.8 m (P < 0.05), and MI-açaí rats was 969.9 ± 362.2 m. Systolic arterial pressure was significantly decreased in MI rats (86.88 ± 4.62 mmHg) compared to sham rats (115.30 ± 7.24 mmHg; P < 0.05). Açaí treatment prevented a reduction in systolic arterial pressure (130.00 ± 8.16 mmHg) compared to MI rats (P < 0.05). Left ventricular (LV) end-diastolic pressure was significantly augmented in MI rats (17.62 ± 1.21 mmHg) compared to sham rats (4.15 ± 1.60 mmHg; P < 0.05), but was 3.69 ± 2.69 mmHg in açaí-treated rats (P < 0.05 vs. MI). The LV relaxation rate (-dp/dt) was reduced in MI rats compared to the sham group, whereas açaí treatment prevented this reduction. Açaí treatment prevented cardiac hypertrophy and LV fibrosis in MI rats. Conclusions Euterpe oleracea treatment of MI rats prevented the development of exercise intolerance, cardiac hypertrophy, fibrosis, and dysfunction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present study was carried out to investigate the phytochemical constituents, In vitro antioxidant potential and anthelmintic activities of Flacourtia sepiaria Roxb leaves. METHODS The dried powdered leaves of Flacourtia sepiaria were extracted using petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol by a soxhlet extractor and preliminary phytochemical screening was performed using standard protocols. All the extract was evaluated for their potential antioxidant activities using test such as DPPH, superoxide anion radical, hydroxyl radical, nitric oxide radical scavenging abilities, ferrous chelating ability and total phenolic and flavanoid content. Anthelmintic activity of extract was screened in adult Indian earthworm model. RESULTS Preliminary screening revealed the presence of bioactive compounds especially phenolics, tannins and terpenoids in all extracts. The phenolic and flavanoid content was highest in methanolic extract and lowest in petroleum ether extract. The paralytic (9.46±0.212) and death time (31.43±0.148) of methanolic extract was found to be significant (P<0.05) when compared with paralytic (7.33±0.206) and death time (18.60±0.229) of standard piperazine citrate at 100 mg/mL concentration. CONCLUSIONS The results of the present study indicate that the leaf extracts of Flacourtia sepiaria exhibited strong antioxidant activity and possess significant anthelmintic activity and thus it is a good source of antioxidant and anthelmintic constituents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypericum elegans is used in Bulgarian folk medicine for treatment of wounds, depression, gastrointestinal and bacterial diseases. OBJECTIVE RECENTLY, NEW NATURAL BENZOPHENONES: Elegaphenone and O-glycosides: Hypericophenonoside, Neoannulatophenonoside and Elegaphenonoside as well as already known 7-Epiclusianone were isolated from the titled species. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antioxidant and acetyl cholinesterase inhibitory potential of the isolated compounds. MATERIALS AND METHODS 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) di-ammonium salt (ABTS) free radicals, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay as well as inhibition of lipid peroxidation in linoleic acid system were used for determination of antioxidant activity. Modified Ellman's colorimetric method was carried out to assess the acetyl cholinesterase inhibition potential. Hyperoside and Galantamine hydrobromide were used as positive controls. RESULTS Hypericophenonoside was found to possess the strongest DPPH radical scavenging activity (IC50 = 181.85 ± 6.82 μM), while Neoannulatophenonoside showed the highest ABTS (IC50 = 0.25 ± 0.005 μM) and lipid peroxidation inhibitor activity. FRAP activity was demonstrated only by prenylated aglycones - Elegaphenone [942.16 ± 4.03 μM Trolox Equivalent (TE)] and 7-Epiclusianone (642.95 ± 3.95 μM TE) and was stronger compared to the control Hyperoside (421.75 ± 9.29 μM TE). Elegaphenone and 7-Epiclusianone were found to possess moderate acetyl cholinesterase inhibitory potential with IC50 values of 192.19 ± 3.54 μM and 142.97 ± 4.62 μM, respectively. CONCLUSION The results obtained revealed that H. elegans is a potential natural source of bioactive compounds and benzophenones could be useful in therapy of free radical pathologies and neurodegenerative disorders.

Abstract
The present study was designed to evaluate the cardioprotective effects of methanolic extract of Litsea deccanensis (MELD) against isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarction in rats by studying cardiac markers, lipid peroxidation, lipid profile, and histological changes. Male Wistar rats were treated orally with MELD (100 and 200 mg/kg) daily for a period of 21 days. After 21 days of pretreatment, isoproterenol (100 mg/kg) was injected subcutaneously to rats at an interval of 24 h for 2 days to induce myocardial infarction. Isoproterenol-induced rats showed significant (P < 0.05) increase in the levels of serum creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, and lipid hydro peroxides. The serum lipid levels were altered in the isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarcted rats. The histopathological findings of the myocardial tissue evidenced myocardial damage in isoproterenol-induced rats. The oral pretreatment with MELD restored the pathological alterations in the isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarcted rats. The MELD pretreatment significantly reduced the levels of biochemical markers, lipid peroxidation and regulated the lipid profile of the antioxidant system in the isoproterenol-induced rats. An inhibited myocardial necrosis was evidenced by the histopathological findings in MELD pretreated isoproterenol-induced rats. Our study shows that oral pretreatment with MELD prevents isoproterenol-induced oxidative stress in myocardial infarction. The presence of phenolic acid and flavonoid contents were confirmed by preliminary phytochemical tests. The reducing power and free radical scavenging activities of the MELD may be the possible reason for it pharmacological actions.

Abstract
Background: A decoction prepared with barks of Adenanthera pavonina and Thespesia populnea is a herbal formulation which has been prescribed in Sri Lanka in the treatment of cancer patients for many years. This study was designed to investigate its phytochemical and antioxidant properties. Materials and Methods: The total phenolics and flavonoids were determined using Folin–Ciocalteau and aluminum chloride colorimetric methods, respectively. Gallic acid content in the decoction was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography. The antioxidant properties were evaluated by 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical assay, nitric oxide scavenging assay, deoxyribose method, and the reducing power of the decoction. Results: The concentration of total phenols, flavonoids, and gallic acid of the decoction were 34.13 ± 3.54 w/w % gallic acid equivalents, 41.37 ± 0.57 w/w % of (-)-Epigallocatechin gallate equivalents, and 0.58 ± 0.24 mg/g, respectively. The EC50 for DPPH, nitric oxide scavenging, and deoxyribose assays were 7.24 ± 0.50, 14.02 ± 0.66, and 53.21 ± 2.82 μg/ml, respectively. Reducing power of the decoction increased with the concentration. Conclusion: These investigations suggested that the decoction prepared with A. pavonina and T. populnea can be a potential source of nutraceuticals with antioxidant activity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fissistigma polyanthum is a liane belonging to the Annonaceae family and it is one of the most important crude drugs in traditional Chinese medicine. OBJECTIVE The objective was to describe the structural elucidation and the free-radical-scavenging activities of the isolated compounds from Fissistigma polyanthum. MATERIAL AND METHODS The chemical constituents were isolated and purified by normal, reverse column chromatography and HPLC. Their structures were identified by spectroscopic methods ((1)H NMR and (13)C NMR) and by comparison with literature values, and the free-radical-scavenging activities of these two compounds were also evaluated through three in vitro model systems (DPPH, trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) and Co (II) EDTA-induced luminol chemiluminescence by flow injection). RESULTS Two known compounds, named kanakugiol (1) and teutenone A (2), were isolated from the stem of Fissistigma polyanthum for the first time, and compound 1 exhibited moderate free-radical-scavenging activity. CONCLUSION Fissistigma polyanthum, which has traditionally been used as an important Chinese medicine, showed a certain free-radical-scavenging activity.
