Abstract
Introduction Feeding infants a sub-optimal diet deprives them of critical nutrients for their physical and cognitive development. The objective of this study is to describe the intake of foods of low nutritional value (junk foods) and identify the association with growth and developmental outcomes in infants up to 18 months in low-resource settings. Methods This is a secondary analysis of data from an iron-rich complementary foods (meat versus fortified cereal) randomized clinical trial on nutrition conducted in low-resource settings in four low- and middle-income countries (Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guatemala, Pakistan, and Zambia). Mothers in both study arms received nutritional messages on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months with continued breastfeeding up to at least 12 months. This study was designed to identify the socio-demographic predictors of feeding infants' complementary foods of low nutritional value (junk foods) and to assess the associations between prevalence of junk food use with neurodevelopment (assessed with the Bayley Scales of Infant Development II) and growth at 18 months. Results 1,231 infants were enrolled, and 1,062 (86%) completed the study. Junk food feeding was more common in Guatemala, Pakistan, and Zambia than in the Democratic Republic of Congo. 7% of the infants were fed junk foods at 6 months which increased to 70% at 12 months. Non-exclusive breastfeeding at 6 months, higher maternal body mass index, more years of maternal and paternal education, and higher socioeconomic status were associated with feeding junk food. Prevalence of junk foods use was not associated with adverse neurodevelopmental or growth outcomes. Conclusion The frequency of consumption of junk food was high in these low-resource settings but was not associated with adverse neurodevelopment or growth over the study period.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the time trends and socio-economic inequalities in infant and young child feeding practices in accordance with the Brazilian deprivation index (BDI). DESIGN This time-series study analysed the prevalence of multiple breast-feeding and complementary feeding indicators based on data from the Brazilian Food and Nutrition Surveillance System, 2008-2019. Prais-Winsten regression models were used to analyse time trends. Annual percent change (APC) and 95 % CI were calculated. SETTING Primary health care services, Brazil. PARTICIPANTS Totally, 911 735 Brazilian children under 2 years old. RESULTS Breast-feeding and complementary feeding practices differed between the extreme BDI quintiles. Overall, the results were more favourable in the municipalities with less deprivation (Q1). Improvements in some complementary feeding indicators were observed over time and evidenced such disparities: minimum dietary diversity (Q1: Δ 47·8-52·2 %, APC + 1·44, P = 0·006), minimum acceptable diet (Q1: Δ 34·5-40·5 %, APC + 5·17, P = 0·004) and consumption of meat and/or eggs (Q1: Δ 59·7-80·3 %, APC + 6·26, P < 0·001; and Q5: Δ 65·7-70·7 %, APC + 2·20, P = 0·041). Stable trends in exclusive breast-feeding and decreasing trends in the consumption of sweetened drinks and ultra-processed foods were also observed regardless the level of the deprivation. CONCLUSIONS Improvements in some complementary food indicators were observed over time. However, the improvements were not equally distributed among the BDI quintiles, with children from the municipalities with less deprivation benefiting the most.

Abstract
Food insecurity affects more than 40 million individuals in the United States and is linked to negative health outcomes due, in part, to poor dietary quality. Despite the emergence of metabolomics as a modality to objectively characterize nutritional biomarkers, it is unclear whether food security is associated with any biomarkers of dietary quality. This scoping review aims to summarize studies that examined associations between nutritional biomarkers and food security, as well as studies that investigated metabolomic differences between people with and without food insecurity. PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and AGRICOLA were searched through August 2022 for studies describing food insecurity and metabolic markers in blood, urine, plasma, hair, or nails. The 78 studies included consisted of targeted assays quantifying lipids, dietary nutrients, heavy metals, and environmental xenobiotics as biochemical features associated with food insecurity. Among those biomarkers which were quantified in at least five studies, none showed a consistent association with food insecurity. Although three biomarkers of dietary quality have been assessed between food-insecure versus food-secure populations, no studies have utilized untargeted metabolomics to characterize patterns of small molecules that distinguish between these two populations. Further studies are needed to characterize the dietary quality profiles of individuals with and without food insecurity.

Abstract
Background. Globally, anemia is a widespread public health problem associated with increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Under 5 children have greater risk of anemia. The level of burden and the risk factors for anemia vary in different settings. Identifying local factors will have important implications for health intervention programs aimed to tackle the burden. Our study aims to investigate the determinants of anemia among under 5 children in the study area. Methods. Facility based unmatched case control study was conducted among 413 (137 cases and 276 controls) children of Dilla town. Cases were children who had hemoglobin level of less than 11 g/dl and controls were children aged 6 to 59 months with hemoglobin ≥11 g/dl. Quota and simple random sampling was used for cases and controls respectively. Data on socio-demographic, dietary diversity score, food security, anthropometry, hemoglobin level, malaria infection and intestinal parasites were collected. Data were analyzed with SPSS version 25. Bi-variate and multivariate binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify independent determinants of anemia. P-value less than .05 were used to declare statistical significance. Result. In the multivariate analysis, having more than 1 under 5 children in the households (AOR = 3.03, 95%CI = 1.35-6.81), intestinal parasitosis (AOR = 4.42, 95%CI = 2.07-9.44), food insecurity (AOR = 2.75, 95% CI = 1.39-5.45), and stunting (AOR = 6.09, 95% CI = 2.53-14.67) were determinants of anemia among children aged 6 to 59 months. Conclusion. Some of the identified factors are modifiable that could be targeted to reduce childhood anemia. Family planning education, provision of anti-helminthic drugs and ensuring household food security will be beneficial to tackle anemia.

Abstract
Poor nutrition is the underlying cause of child death. However, comprehensive data showing the relationships between dietary-practices, food security, and nutritional status are scant. The present study aimed to examine the association of inappropriate feeding practices and household-hunger with anthropometric measures in children aged 6-23 months. A cross-sectional survey was conducted on randomly selected 525-households. Semi-structured interviewer-administered questionnaires were used to gather data on socio-demographic, child health, dietary-practices and household-hunger. Weight and height/length of the children were measured and analyzed using the new World Health Organization (WHO) Growth Standards. The prevalence of stunting, wasting and underweight as well as composite index of anthropometric failure (CIFA) were used to indicate under-nutrition. The overall prevalence of inappropriate feeding practices was 22.9%, rate of moderate households-hunger was 12.4%, and the prevalence of stunting, underweight and wasting was 16.2%, 6.9% and 6.3%, respectively, while the CIAF was 21.3%. The prevalence was significantly higher in young children aged 12-23 months than in infants aged 6-11 months. Children from households experiencing moderate hunger had significantly higher risk of being stunting (OR: 10.20; 95%CI: 2.00-51.50), underweight (OR:3.89; 95%CI: 1.40-10.90), wasting (OR: 1.97; 95%CI: 0.99-3.90), and CIAF (OR: 1.90; 95%CI: 1.05-3.45), than those residing in households experiencing no or mild hunger. Multi-disciplinary approaches are required to improve household food-security and child dietary practices, thus the nutritional status among young children.

Abstract
Background Despite mixed reports, food insecurity emerges as a predictor of nutritional status, assumably limiting the quantity and quality of dietary intake. In Ethiopia, the prevalence of childhood undernutrition and food insecurity is highly pronounced. However, whether household food insecurity predicts undernutrition in children was not yet well established. Thus, the aim of the present study was to identify the link between household food access and undernutrition in children aged 6-23 months in West Oromia zones, Ethiopia. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 525 households during June-October 2016. Food access was measured as Household Food Insecurity Access Scale. Semistructured interviewer-administered questionnaires were employed to collect data on sociodemographics, child health, child dietary practices, household food security, and anthropometrics. The height and weight of children aged 6-23 months in each household were measured. Multivariate logistic regression models were constructed to assess the association between household food insecurity and child nutritional status measured from undernutrition indicators. Results Overall, more than two-thirds (69%) of households were classified as food insecure (had insufficient access to adequate food), with a mean (SD) household food access score of 7.9 (7.7). The respective prevalence of mild and moderate food-insecure households was 56.6% and 12.4%. Higher proportions of children in food-insecure households were stunted (41.8% vs. 15.5%), underweight (22.0% vs. 6.1%), and wasted (14.9% vs. 6.1%). Overall, the prevalence of child undernutrition was 21.3% in the target population, with 16.2% stunted, 6.9% underweight, and 6.3% wasted. The present finding shows food-secure households were 54% protective (OR: 0.46, 95% CI: 0.25-0.84) for child undernutrition. Compared to children in food-secure households, children who were reportedly living in moderately food-insecure households were over twice more likely stunted (OR: 2.09, 95% CI: 1.02-4.28) and over 4 times more likely underweight (OR: 4.73, 95% CI: 1.81-12.35). However, household food insecurity was not a correlate for acute malnutrition (wasting) in children. Conclusions The prevalence of household's food insecurity situation is very common and more pronounced among households with undernourished children aged 6-23 months in Ethiopia. The analysis of this work shows that moderately food-insecure households are a salient predictor for composite undernutrition, stunting, and underweight, but not for wasting. Thus, this finding informs the need for multisectoral strategies and policies to combat household's food insecurity and multiple forms of child undernutrition, beyond the socioeconomic wellbeing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Increasing evidence has suggested an association between food insecurity and the risk of anaemia. Therefore, a systematic review and meta-analysis were performed to examine the associations between food insecurity and anaemia risk. SETTING Pertinent studies were identified by searching PubMed and EMBASE databases up to August 2017. Data were available from nineteen studies; seventeen studies were cross-sectional and two studies were longitudinal. Risk ratios of 95993 individual participants from twelve different countries in these studies were pooled for the meta-analysis. RESULTS The results showed that there was an overall positive relationship between food insecurity and anaemia risk (OR=1·27; 95 % CI 1·13, 1·40). Similar results were observed for Fe-deficiency anaemia (OR=1·45; 95 % CI 1·04, 1·86). These results revealed that food insecurity at two levels, including mild food insecurity (OR=1·15; 95 % CI 1·00, 1·31) and moderate food insecurity (OR=1·36; 95 % CI 1·23, 1·48), increased the risk of anaemia. In addition, it was found that age had an impact on the associations between food insecurity and anaemia risk (OR=1·22; 95 % CI 1·09, 1·36). Age subgroup analysis indicated that food insecurity significantly increased the risk of anaemia among infants/toddlers (OR=1·17; 95 % CI 1·05, 1·29) and adult women (OR=1·35; 95 % CI 1·16, 1·54). CONCLUSIONS It seems that infants, toddlers and adult women in food-insecure households are at a higher risk of anaemia. To prevent anaemia in food-insecure households, these age groups may require more nutritional support.

Abstract
Background Anemia affects a significant part of the population in nearly every country in the globe. Iron requirements are greatest at ages 6-23 months when growth is extremely rapid and critically essential in critical times of life. Even though infants and toddlers are highly at risk, they are not considered as separate populations in the estimation of anemia. Despite this, the prevalence of anemia among under 24 months of age is still at its highest point of severity to be a public health problem in Ethiopia. There is no study that documented the magnitude of the problem and associated factors in the study area. The main aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of anemia and to identify associated factors among children 6-23 months of age. Methods A community-based cross-sectional study was carried out among 485 children of Damot Sore, South Ethiopia from March to April 2017. Data on socio-demographic, dietary, blood samples for hemoglobin level and malaria infection were collected. Both descriptive and bivariate analyses were done and all variables having a p-value of 0.25 were selected for multivariable analyses. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to isolate independent predictors of anemia at a p-value less than 0.05. A principal component analysis was used to generate household wealth score, dietary diversity score. Results Out of 522 sampled children, complete data were captured from 485 giving a response rate of 92.91%. For altitude and persons smoking in the house adjusted prevalence of anemia was 255(52.6%). The larger proportion, 128(26.4%) of children had moderate anemia. On multivariable logistic regression analyses, household food insecurity (AOR = 2.74(95% CI: 1.62-4.65)), poor dietary diversity (AOR = 2.86(95% CI: 1.73-4.7)), early or late initiation of complementary feeding (AOR = 2.0(95% CI: 1.23-3.60)), poor breastfeeding practice (AOR = 2.6(95% CI: 1.41-4.62)), and poor utilization of folic acid by mothers (AOR = 2.75(95% CI: 1.42-5.36)) were significantly associated with anemia. Conclusion Prevalence of anemia among children (6-23 months) was a severe public health problem in the study area. Most important predictors are suboptimal child feeding practices, household food insecurity, and poor diet. Multi-sectoral efforts are needed to improve health and interventions targeting nutrition security are recommended.
