Abstract
BACKGROUND In Italy, cultural and professional nursing improvements are reached thanks to the university-based education which marks the clinical competency and the professional autonomy in nursing decision-making. OBJECTIVE To highlight how Italian nurses perceived their nursing autonomy level in the main action-points highlighted in the Italian regulation law according to sex, age, work experience, education, shift and ward. METHODS A cohort explorative study was carried out from September 2022 to January 2023 to highlight how Italian nurses perceived their nursing autonomy levels in the main action-points highlighted in the Italian regulation law for the nursing profession according to demographic characteristics, like: gender, age, work of experience, education, shift, ward employment. RESULTS A total of 403 nurses were enrolled. Significant differences were recorded in: decision-making authority in patient care and shift (p≤0.001) and ward employment (p = 0.045); ability to initiate nursing interventions and education (p < 0.001) and ward employment (p = 0.011); collaboration and communication with healthcare team members and education (p < 0.001) and ward employment (p = 0.010); independence in clinical judgment and critical thinking and shift (p < 0.001); responsibility for the planning and evaluation of nursing care and education (p = 0.005) and shift (p = 0.002) and ward employment (p = 0.013); autonomy in professional development and continuing education and shift (p < 0.001) and ward employment (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The results highlighted the intricate world both of the healthcare surrounding and the abilities to act autonomously within the multiprofessional staff. Future studies will develop qualitative and phenomenological designs in order to better define in which fields nurses will act their professional autonomy.

Abstract
Intensive care unit (ICU) nurses' professional autonomy is a critical factor affecting their ability to sustainably provide high-quality care to patients who are critically ill and to their families. However, in the absence of a systematic or scoping review of ICU nurses' professional autonomy, limited information and evidence are available on this topic. The aim of this scoping review was to clarify the extent and type of evidence on ICU nurses' professional autonomy. This scoping review was conducted in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews. The following research questions were addressed: (1) Which areas of interest and trends regarding ICU nurses' professional autonomy have been explored in studies published in scientific journals? And (2) What is known about ICU nurses' professional autonomy? The data sources included MEDLINE, CINAHL Ultimate, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, and Ichushi-Web of the Japan Medical Abstracts Society databases. Identified studies were mapped based on their aim, design, methodology, and key findings and categorized according to their focus areas. Of the 734 identified studies, 16 were analyzed. The identified categories were as follows: "relationship between professional autonomy and mental issues," "experiences and processes of exercising professional autonomy," "relationship between professional autonomy and nurse-physician collaboration," "relationship between professional autonomy and demographic characteristics," "concept of professional autonomy," "barriers to professional autonomy," and "team approach to improve professional autonomy." Most studies have focused on the relationship between professional autonomy and mental health issues and nurse-physician collaboration and few included interventions to enable or promote the exercise of professional autonomy, highlighting a research gap. Future research should identify factors that inhibit the professional autonomy of ICU nurses and that can be changed through interventions and should develop educational and organizational change-based interventions to modify the factors.

Abstract
RATIONALE AND KEY POINTS Small group teaching sessions are commonly used in healthcare to deliver education, provide practice updates and support continuing professional development. Such sessions can provide opportunities for participants to acquire new knowledge, foster peer relationships, consolidate learning and develop skills. This article provides a step-by-step guide for nurses and other healthcare professionals on designing and delivering a small group teaching session. • A small group teaching session requires considered, detailed and methodical preparation. • When designing a small group teaching session, it is important to determine its aims, learning outcomes, group characteristics, location and timeframe. • A well-planned small teaching session includes learning activities that are constructively aligned to the aims and intended learning outcomes. • Assessing participant learning and addressing gaps in their understanding is essential during the delivery of small group teaching. REFLECTIVE ACTIVITY: 'How to' articles can help to update your practice and ensure it remains evidence based. Apply this article to your practice. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Radiographers' profession is constantly evolving, which demands adaptation of education and training programs to build up medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals (MIRTPs) that provide healthcare to improve patient experience and outcomes. This study aimed to map radiographers' practices, competences, and autonomy level in Western Switzerland. METHODS Data was collected by 2 cross-sectional online surveys targeting Alumni, radiographers, clinical placement tutors and medical imaging equipment specialists from industry, with opened and closed-end questions. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were used to analyse the data. RESULTS 81 Alumni and 93 Chief-Radiographers, clinical tutors, practitioner-radiographers and industry answered the questionnaires. The competences considered as the most "acquired or completely acquired" by the Alumni were: adopt a reflective posture on practice (90.1 %; 73/81), adopt ethical behaviour (90.1 %; 73/81), carrying out and providing radiological services for diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive purposes (81.5 %; 68/81), adapting communication to the other surrounding persons (81.5 %; 66/81), and check compliance of procedures with standards (69.1 %; 56/81). Similar results were referred by Employers. The autonomy of the participant radiographers was considered as average, and it focuses only the preparation of the patient and the protocol optimisation. The development and integration of research is weak as well as the application of competences regarding professionalism. CONCLUSIONS A better link between educational institutions and clinical practice can help on the integration of research and evidence-based on practice, necessary to progress the radiographers' profession in Western Switzerland. The autonomy needs to be further developed and leadership courses must be integrated in the curricula to facilitate the implementation of new approaches to reinforce radiographer's profession. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Practice must be revised to integrate evidence-based; to facilitate research development, the managers need to increase support.

Abstract
Professionalism is a fundamental concept in nursing and a central aspect of nursing care. The review aimed to synthesize evidence presented in qualitative studies related to the perception of professionalism in nursing practice. Six main analytical themes were generated from primary studies included in the literature review: everyday practice, ethical aspects of nursing care, nurses' identity, nurses' professional growth, achieving autonomy, complexity of relationships. Presented themes are considered key elements of nursing professionalism, are closely interconnected, and support the multidimensional structure of professionalism in nursing. Nursing professionalism means providing high-quality care while upholding the values of integrity, accountability, and respect.

Abstract
Nurse managers play a vital role in healthcare organizations, wielding the ability to substantially enhance work environments, foster nurses' autonomy, and bolster retention within workplaces. In this context, this study focuses on the Nurse Manager Actions scale, aiming to evaluate its items' scalability as well as the scale's validity and reliability among nurses and nurse managers operating within the Italian healthcare context. The study protocol was not registered. To ensure linguistic and cultural alignment, an iterative and collaborative translation process was undertaken. Subsequently, a multi-center cross-sectional design was adopted. Using a web-survey approach, data were collected among 683 nurses and 188 nurse managers between August 2022 and January 2023. The Nurse Manager Actions scale was found to be a valid and reliable instrument in Italian after a Mokken Scale Analysis. For nurses (HT= 0.630, Molenaar-Sijtsma rho = 0.890), the scale included 6 items, while 11 items were confirmed for nurse managers (HT= 0.620, Molenaar-Sijtsma rho = 0.830). Nurse Manager Actions scale scores were correlated with increased satisfaction and decreased intention to leave for both nurses and nurse managers. The employed validation process enhanced the scale validity for use in Italy and provided a model for other researchers to follow when assessing similar measures in different populations. Measuring and empowering nurse manager actions in work contexts is essential to improve the general well-being and retention of nurses, especially in the current nursing shortage.

Abstract
PURPOSE Nurses are susceptible to unfavorable effects of workplace accidents and injuries, therefore, perceived management commitment to safety and psychological empowerment can help nurses to participate in safety measures and adhere to safety performance. Thus, this study aimed to examine the relationship between perceived management commitment to safety, psychological empowerment, and safety performance among emergency nurses in Jordan. METHODS A cross-sectional, descriptive correlational design was used and 306 registered nurses working in the emergency department in Jordanian governmental hospitals were recruited. A self-structured questionnaire consisting of the perceived management commitment to safety scale, psychological empowerment scale, and safety performance scale was used to collect data during the period from July 2022 to August 2022. RESULTS The findings demonstrated that the levels of study variables revealed as follows: the perceived management commitment to safety mean was 3.1 (SD = 0.66) out of 5, which indicated an acceptable level, the mean score of psychological empowerment was 5.37 (SD = 0.94) out of 7, which reflected that the nurses perceived the work environment to be psychologically empowered, and the mean score for safety performance was 4.02 (SD = 0.56) out of 5, which indicated an acceptable level of safety performance among the participants, and the mean for subscales (safety compliance and participation) was 4.07 (SD = 0.57) and 3.93 (SD = 0.69) out of 5, respectively. Also, there was a positive correlation between safety performance and perceived management commitment to safety (r = 0.334, p < 0.001), and psychological empowerment (r = 0.592, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION It is necessary to implement continuous interventions centered on empowering emergency nurses psychologically, which has a positive effect on safety performance. Given management's commitment to safety as a priority topic of discussion at group meetings creating a work environment that encourages nurses' safety performance should be encouraged.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To add to the body of evidence regarding nurse engagement and related factors from a non-US sample of nurses. BACKGROUND Leadership has a positive impact on nurses' autonomy and engagement experiences. It is necessary to explore the factors that explain the relationships between leadership, autonomy, and engagement level. METHODS Nurses (n = 4393) from 9 hospitals participated in a survey in March 2020. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to identify engagement and autonomy predictors. RESULTS Of the respondents, 9% were engaged, 28% content, 29% ambivalent, and 34% disengaged. Respondents' separate background variables were not significant predictors in multivariate models, whereas the leadership- and autonomy-related variables were. CONCLUSIONS A manager's responsiveness, an organization's readiness to follow nurse suggestions for performance improvement, and receiving recognition and regular feedback promote engagement. Furthermore, engagement is enhanced when nurses have an active role in decision-making and their contributions are respected. Visible nurse managers and leaders who are effective advocates for nurses strengthen nurses' autonomy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinical learning opportunities (CLO) are vital educational encounters occurring in various clinical areas to provide the student nurses with clinical knowledge and experiences to develop their competencies for professional practice. However, CLO is a broad concept with varied characteristics that allow ambiguity, limiting its understanding and use. Its ambiguous nature leads to uncertainties and poor development of the required clinical attributes of successful theory to practice integration, higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) and clinical competencies. AIM The aim of the study was to explore and describe the conceptual meaning of CLO, have a clear understanding and insight into the concept and identify the antecedents and consequences for pragmatic purposes. SETTING The study took place in a public academic hospital in Gauteng. METHODS The eight steps of concept analysis by Walker and Avant were followed. Multiple data sources not limited to nursing were explored and critically analysed for the definitions, characteristics, nature and uses of CLO from different fields of study. RESULTS The defining attributes of CLO were identified, namely the context, antecedents, processes, consequences and outcomes. The context within which CLO occurs was dynamic, multidimensional, real-life healthcare settings; antecedents included planning of clinical placement, provision of learning outcomes and consideration of the cognitive level of the students. Engagement and active participation in collaborative, problem-based learning activities, community-based research and the use of emerging technologies were the processes identified. The outcomes were autonomous, confident, competent professional nurses with critical thinking, clinical reasoning, judgement, critical decision making and problem-solving skills. CONCLUSION A theoretical and operational definition of CLO was developed. The findings and results of concept analysis identified and specified the defining attributes of clinical learning opportunity. The findings can assist nurse educators, Clinical Education and Teaching Unit (CETU) personnel and operational managers to enhance CLO for student nurses to achieve their clinical learning goals and outcomes. The evaluation tools that may be adopted to assess the acquired clinical skills were also identified. CONTRIBUTION An increase in the existing body of knowledge in nursing education, considering that enhancing the CLO exposes students to various clinical experiences contributing to their development of clinical competencies to solve complex problems. The strategies to enhance the CLO will be developed, which may also provide vital information for policy development. Conceptualisation of the findings to nursing practice and quality patient care will be integrated into relevant literature.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Autonomy is an essential factor in the nursing profession. Nurses' autonomy can improve care quality, decrease mortality in patients, and attenuate job stress. This study aimed to investigate professional autonomy and its relationship with job stress among nurses working in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). MATERIALS AND METHODS This descriptive correlational study was conducted at Urmia nursing school in Iran in 2020. Three hundred ninety-eight nurses working at the ICUs entered the study. Data was collected using the Dempster Practice Behavior Scale (DPBS) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) questionnaire. Independent t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to examine the relationship between demographics and study variables. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to investigate the relationship between professional autonomy and job stress of nurses. RESULTS The mean (SD) of total professional autonomy and job stress score of nurses was, respectively, 102. 11(91. 88), and 115. 53(12. 42), indicating moderate autonomy and job stress. Professional autonomy had a significant positive correlation with job stress (r = 0.51, p < 0.001). It also had a significant positive correlation with work experience in ICU (r = 0.12, p = 0.014). CONCLUSIONS ICU nurses have moderate autonomy and job stress, and their autonomy is a significant positive predictor of their job stress. University authorities are recommended to develop practical strategies to enhance nurses' autonomy and eliminate factors that cause job stress in ICU nurses in order to preserve nurses' health, improve the quality of nursing care, and increase patient safety.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE WORK Nurses underline the importance of implementing organizational and managerial practice through observance of standard procedures and that this system acts as a guarantor for himself and for the patients themselves. On the contrary, an unsafe environment determines high levels of stress among the staff that will inevitably affect users. This study aimed to validate a short version of the QISO, so that it can be more easily applied in the workplace and nurses, already struggling with the multiple activities, can respond quickly, outlining an easy photograph and above all fast of their working environment. METHODS The QISO questionnaire has been administered to nurses who work in the hospital, both surgical, medical and outpatient setting. To the same interviewers were asked to fill in the QISOsv later. RESULTS Cronbach's α of the QISOsv is .878. The cut off value was also calculated for the reduced version which turns out to be 2.25. No significant differences existed between the two version in their results. CONCLUSIONS The results obtained showed that the nurses interviewed were satisfied with their organizational context.

Abstract
AIMS To determine nurses' job stress and its relationship with professional autonomy and nurse-physician collaboration in intensive care unit (ICU). BACKGROUND Low professional autonomy, high job stress and lack of nurse-physician collaboration can affect nursing care in ICU and the main reasons ICU nurses leave the occupation or transfer to other clinical units. METHODS A cross-sectional, correlational study was conducted on 398 nurses in teaching hospitals in Urmia, Iran, in 2020. Data were collected using the Dempster Practice Behaviors Scale, the Health and Safety Executive tool and the Jefferson Scale of Attitudes toward Physician-Nurse Collaboration. RESULTS The mean job stress (115.53 ± 12.42) and professional autonomy (102.19 ± 11.88) of ICU nurses were 'moderate', and nurse-physician collaboration (74.25 ± 5.10) was 'good'. There was a positive relationship between professional autonomy and job stress (r = .506) and nurse-physician collaboration (r = .242). Professional autonomy was a predictor of job stress in nurses (p < .000), and work experience in ICU can cause job stress in nurses (p = .024). CONCLUSION Increasing nurses' professional autonomy causes an increase in job stress and improves nurse-physician collaboration in ICU. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT Nursing managers should implement practical strategies to improve nurses' autonomy, enhance nurse-physician collaboration and decrease their job stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The current literature indicates that intensive care (ICU) patients' sleep quality is generally poor, which is associated with serious physical and psychological consequences. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To describe the practices nurses use to provide good-quality sleep to adult ICU patients and assess nurses' perceptions of patients' sleep quality and nurses' professional autonomy in sleep management. DESIGN A descriptive-correlational, cross-sectional study. METHODS A total of 232 ICU nurses from four hospitals in Poland were recruited. Data were collected between May and August 2019 using a previously developed questionnaire and analysed using descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests. RESULTS A total of 119 nurses took part in the study (response rate: 51%). On average, nurses rated patients' sleep quality as moderate (4.44 ± 2.23, scale 0-10). Most of the respondents (95.8%) said they did not use any sleep protocol. Various strategies to improve patients' sleep were used sporadically (2.64 ± 1.55, scale 1-5). The use of sleep quality assessment methods was positively correlated with patients' sleep quality (rho = 0.22, P = .02). Nurses' professional autonomy regarding sleep management was assessed as average (4.34 ± 2.43, scale 0-10) and was correlated with the patients' sleep quality (rho = 0.25, P < .01). Nurses who rated their autonomy in patients' sleep management more highly (rho = 0.29, P < .01) and more often influenced patients' sleep decisions (rho = 0.24, P < .01) used more methods to improve patients' sleep. CONCLUSIONS Strengthening the professional autonomy of ICU nurses and creating a reliable sleep assessment and improvement tool, which would describe strategies nurses can implement independently could increase sleep quality among ICU patients. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Addressing organizational problems, which hamper the patients' sleep management by ICU nurses could result in using more strategies to provide good-quality sleep to ICU patients. There is a need for clinical guidelines regarding patients' sleep management to help educate and guide nurses how to independently use sleep improvement methods.
