Correlation between the arm-span and the standing height among males and females of the Khasi tribal population of Meghalaya state of North-Eastern India

Outcomes after bilateral implantation of AcrySof IQ PanOptix trifocal intraocular lens: a prospective interventional study

Background

Implantation of multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) is becoming increasingly popular for the treatment of visual demands at various distances in patients undergoing phacoemulsification cataract surgery. We aimed to assess the visual performance and rates of photic phenomena, posterior capsule opacification (PCO), and spectacle independence in patients with bilateral implantation of the AcrySof® IQ PanOptix® multifocal IOL model TFNT00 at one and six months postoperatively.

Methods

This prospective interventional cohort study included adult patients who underwent uneventful phacoemulsification cataract surgery with bilateral implantation of AcrySof® IQ PanOptix® IOL. Uncorrected and corrected visual acuities at far, intermediate, and near distances were measured preoperatively and at the one- and six-month postoperative follow-up examinations. The rates of photic phenomena, postoperative need for near and distance spectacles, and PCO were also recorded.

Results

We included 164 eyes of 82 patients with a male-to-female ratio of 38 (46.3%) to 44 (53.7%) and a mean (standard deviation [SD]) age of 52.37 (7.62) years. There were statistically significant improvements in the visual acuities of both eyes across all distances at the one- and six-month follow-up examinations compared to the preoperative values (all P < 0.001), except for corrected near visual acuity in the right eye (P > 0.05) at six-month. We also detected significant postoperative improvements in visual acuities of both eyes across all distances at the six-month follow-up compared to values at the one-month follow-up (all P < 0.05), except for corrected near visual acuity in the right eye (P > 0.05). The photic phenomenon was reported by 12 (14.6%) of the 82 patients at the six-month postoperative follow-up. Five (6.1%) and eight (9.8%) of the 82 patients reported using spectacles for distance and near, respectively. Additionally, PCO developed in 19 (11.6%) of the 164 included eyes, although it was not clinically significant at six months.

Conclusions

The AcrySof® IQ PanOptix® IOL model TFNT00 is recommended for use, given its excellent performance in all ranges of vision, a high rate of spectacle independence, and a good safety profile. Future comparative studies with longer follow-up periods are warranted to verify superiority of its performance over that of other available multifocal IOLs.

Impact of Prolonged Cessation of Organized Team Training Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Body Composition of Japanese Elite Female Wheelchair Basketball Athletes

Studies on the effects of training confinement on athletes with physical impairments are limited. Hence, in this retrospective cohort study, we aimed to investigate the impact of prolonged cessation of organized team training due to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic on the body composition of elite female Japanese basketball athletes. Fourteen female wheelchair basketball athletes (aged ≥20 years) were enrolled. The primary outcomes were lean and adipose indices measured using whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The impact of prolonged organized team training cessation on body composition was investigated by comparing the body composition at baseline and post-training confinement. A reduced whole-body lean mass (p = 0.038) and percent lean mass (p = 0.022), as well as an increased percent body fat (p = 0.035), were observed after the confinement period. The regional analysis revealed reduced percent lean and increased percent fat masses in the trunk (p = 0.015 and p = 0.026, respectively) and upper limbs (p = 0.036 and p = 0.048, respectively). In conclusion, prolonged organized team training cessation reduced lean mass and increased body fat percentage, primarily in the trunk and upper limbs. Individualized training programs targeting these body regions should be implemented to improve body composition and physical conditions in athletes during and after prolonged cessation of organized team training.

An Anatomical Study on the Measurement of Stature From Ulnar Length in the Adult Ethnic Khasi Tribal Population of the North Eastern Region of India

Introduction

The stature of an individual is an important parameter for establishing identification. The height of an individual can be indirectly estimated from different parts of the skeleton and such measurements are of great use in forensic science, anatomy, and anthropometry. This study was an attempt to formulate a linear regression equation for estimation of stature by measuring the ulnar length in the living adult Khasi population.

Methods

The study population consists of 164 subjects (Male: 118; Female: 46) between 25 and 45 years of age. The left and right ulnar lengths were measured from the tip of the olecranon process to the tip of the styloid process with the elbow flexed and palm spread over the opposite shoulder by a spreading caliper. The measurements of the stature of the volunteers were done in the standard anatomical standing position with a bared foot with the head in the Frankfort plane. The documented data were calculated by the standard statistical software.

Results

The height and ulnar length in males (160.85 ± 6.34 cm and 24.41 ± 1.10 cm, respectively) were found to be significantly (p < 0.001) higher than females (149.56 ± 2.95 cm and 22.58 ± 0.47 cm, respectively). Significant positive correlation coefficient (r) between height (cm) and ulnar length (cm) were observed in both males (r = 0.955, P < 0.001) and females (r = 0.915, P < 0.001), respectively.

Conclusion

The length of the ulna provides an accurate and reliable means in estimating the height of an individual; being almost a percutaneous bone, its length can be measured easily. The regression formulae that were derived in this study will be useful for clinicians, human anatomists, archeologists, anthropologists, and forensic experts.
