Abstract
Introduction Characterized by a range of symptoms including irregular menstrual cycles, hirsutism, and infertility, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) also poses substantial metabolic challenges. Among these, dyslipidemia and obesity are particularly concerning due to their long-term implications for cardiovascular health. The present study explores the intricate relationship between lipid profile and body mass index (BMI) in patients with PCOS presenting to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, King George's Medical University, Lucknow, a tertiary care teaching hospital in Northern India. Methods The present work involves analysis of clinical characteristics of 230 premenopausal women between 18-45 years of age diagnosed with PCOS (according to Rotterdam Criteria). Patients with conditions such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia; Cushing's syndrome; uncontrolled hypertension, smoking, hypogonadism; using oral contraceptives; pregnant or lactating mothers; smoking or drug addiction; psychiatric illness; and those diagnosed with androgen-secreting tumors were excluded. For each participant, data was collected pertaining to demographics (age, marital status), clinical presentation, height, and weight (for BMI calculation), and total lipid profile comprising of total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C). The patients were stratified according to their BMI as per the WHO Asian classification, and Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated to see the correlation between lipid profile and BMI. Results The final analysis was done on 228 patients, with a mean age of 25.22 (±4.82) years, and 45.6% were currently married. Among the participants, 28.1% of the participants were overweight, and 42.5% of them classified as obese, while the remaining 29.4% had a BMI in the normal range. The mean (SD) total cholesterol was 172.26 (49.55) mg/dl, and 65 patients (28.5%) had elevated serum cholesterol (≥200 mg/dl). Triglycerides were raised (≥ 150 mg/dl) in a majority of the study participants (n=160, 70.2%). While none of the patients had high VLDL-C, LDL-C was elevated in 52 patients (22.8%). HDL-C levels were lower than the threshold value of 50 mg/dl in 152 participants (66.7%). On performing correlation analysis, a significant negative correlation was noted between HDL-C and BMI in the entire study cohort (r=-0.342, p=0.003). Overweight patients exhibited a statistically significant positive correlation between triglycerides and BMI (r=2.628, p=0.002). Participants with BMI in the overweight range demonstrated statistically significant correlations with HDL-C (r=-0.497, p=0.017) and triglycerides (r=2.628, p=0.002); and BMI of obese patients significantly correlated with total cholesterol (r=0.301, p=0.037) and triglycerides (r=0.146, p=0.028). Conclusion The findings of the study underscore the multifaceted nature of PCOS, affecting reproductive health as well as metabolic components. The significant correlations between BMI and lipid parameters, specifically, HDL-C, triglycerides, and total cholesterol, highlight the importance of weight management in reducing cardiovascular risks in women with PCOS.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a frequent disorder that affects reproductive-aged women and has reproductive, metabolic, and psychosocial effects. This research was intended to investigate the comparison between food intake and adipose tissue distribution in Saudi women suffering from PCOS and a control group. To determine the sociodemographic variables, a case-control study was performed with patients from King Fahad Medical City's Reproductive Endocrine and Infertility Medicine Department (REIMD). The case-control study comprised 42 PCOS patients (PCOS-Ps) and 63 as a control group, all aged 20-45 years. Three-day records were collected from participants to estimate the nutrient intake of cases and controls. A body composition analyzer was used to measure body mass index (BMI), body fat (BF), and visceral fat (VF). Biochemical measurements were taken to determine the lipid profile, total testosterone, and serum vitamin D-25-OH. The women's frequency distribution based on sociodemographic characteristics revealed significant differences within and between the groups. The variations in dietary intake between the PCOS-P and control groups were primarily in terms of total calories, carbohydrates, niacin, and folate, all of which were significantly higher in the PCOS-P group. Dietary fiber, unsaturated fat, vitamin A, vitamin B12, calcium, phosphorus, and selenium, on the other hand, were significantly higher in the control group. A majority of both groups had significantly higher BMI (overweight or obese) and higher BF, but normal VF. According to the findings, testosterone levels in PCOS-Ps were significantly higher than in the control group, but vitamin D-25-OH and high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were significantly lower. Age, monthly income, cholesterol, low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and testosterone were the fundamental causes impacting women's anthropometric indices. In conclusion, although both groups were overweight or obese, and differences in calorie and nutrient intake, HDL-C, testosterone, and vitamin D-25-OH levels were observed. The study advises such population groups to limit their consumption of foods high in calories.

Abstract
This was a prospective observational study, conducted at a tertiary care health centre in Rajasthan. A total of 68 women with PCOS (Rotterdam criteria) attending OPD at Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology qualified as per inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in the study. Each participant was examined for anthropometric and biochemical parameters. The largest phenotypic group was phenotype A, (41.17%); followed by B (26.47%); C (20.58%), and D (P + O) phenotypes (11.76%). Hyperandrogenic phenotypes (A, B, C), had significantly higher prevalence of deranged serum glucose (fasting and postprandial), lipid profile and serum TSH than normoandrogenic phenotype D. BMI was strongly correlated with anthropometric (p < 0.001) and biochemical parameters (p < 0.05) in phenotype A among four phenotypes of PCOS. Phenotype A was the most common form of PCOS and a strong correlation of BMI with waist circumference (WC), dyslipidemia and Sub-clinical hypothyroidism (SCH) was observed in women of this phenotype of PCOS. These results indicate that phenotype A is at increased risk of CVD and diabetes and phenotype D has least metabolic risks.

Abstract
Background Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which affects women of reproductive age, is the most prevalent endocrine disorder. Signs of excessive androgen, irregular menses, prolonged anovulation, and infertility are characteristics of the clinical phenotype. Women with PCOS are more likely to have diabetes, obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, anxiety, and depression. PCOS affects women's health starting before conception and continuing through their post-menopausal years. Methods Ninety-six study subjects were recruited from women visiting the gynaecology clinic according to the Rotterdam criteria for PCOS. Study subjects were then divided into lean and obese groups according to their body mass index (BMI). Demographic data, and obstetrical and gynaecological history were obtained including marital status, menstrual cycle regularity, recent abnormal weight gain (in the preceding six months), and subfertility. To identify any clinical signs of hyperandrogenism such as acne, acanthosis nigricans, or hirsutism, a general and systemic examination was conducted. Data were analyzed after the clinico-metabolic profile was assessed, compared, and contrasted between the two groups. Results The findings showed a significant correlation between obese women with PCOS and the clinical profile of PCOS i.e. menstrual irregularities, acne vulgaris, acanthosis nigricans and hirsutism; the waist-hip ratio was higher in both groups. Higher levels of fasting insulin, fasting glucose: insulin ratio, postprandial sugars, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index, total testosterone, free testosterone, and luteinizing hormone/follicle-stimulating hormone (LH: FSH) ratio were seen in obese women with PCOS, whereas the levels of fasting glucose, serum triglycerides, serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) were higher in all the study subjects irrespective of BMI. Conclusion The study showed that women with PCOS have a deranged metabolic profile like abnormal blood sugar, insulin resistance (IR), and hyperandrogenemia with clinical derangements like irregular menses, subfertility, and recent weight gain more frequently with higher BMI.

Abstract
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a metabolic and hormonal condition affecting women of a reproductive age. It causes an abnormal menstrual cycle, anovulation, infertility, acne, hirsutism, obesity, hyperlipidemia, and cardiovascular disorders. Because resveratrol decreases testosterone levels, it may be of value in treating PCOS. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of resveratrol in treating women with PCOS. We searched for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) in PubMed, Cochrane CENTRAL, Scopus and Web of Science. With 95% confidence intervals, the data was retrieved and analyzed as a mean difference (MD) or a standardized mean difference (SMD). Four RCTs with 218 women were included in the analysis. Resveratrol significantly reduced testosterone (SMD = -0.40; 95% CI [-0.71, -0.10], P = 0.009), luteinizing hormone (LH) (SMD = -0.32; 95% CI [-0.62, 0.01], P = 0.04), and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) (MD = -0.85; 95% CI [-1.25, -0.45], P < 0.0001) compared with the placebo. Resveratrol is effective in treating women with PCOS due to reducing the levels of testosterone, LH, and DHEAS. In combination with other treatments, especially for hyperlipidemia, resveratrol is beneficial for women diagnosed with PCOS.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine-metabolic syndrome that involves hyperandrogenism, menstrual irregularities, and/or small cysts in one or both ovaries which might lead to infertility in women. The genetics of PCOS is heterogenous with the involvement of several genes reported in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Follicular growth and steroidogenesis regulation are both critically dependent on follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). The variants of FSHR cause abnormal folliculogenesis, steroidogenesis, and oocyte maturation at various stages of growth and may render women more susceptible to PCOS development. The present case-control study evaluated the association of FSHR rs6165 and rs6166 variants with PCOS. A total of 743 females were recruited. PCR-RFLP method was used for the genotypic analysis of FSHR polymorphisms. Obesity was examined according to the categorization of body mass index (BMI) and waist-hip ratio (WHR). Biochemical analysis, including a lipid profile, LH, FSH, and testosterone levels, was done in both PCOS women and controls. BMI and WHR revealed a statistically significant difference between PCOS cases and controls. Overall, levels of HDL were significantly lower, whereas cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, and VLDL levels were higher in PCOS women (p < 0.05). The genotypic and allelic frequencies of rs6165 and rs6166 did not demonstrate significant differences when PCOS women were compared with the control group. However, clinical features of PCOS including gonadotropic hormone (FSH), hyperandrogenism, and dyslipidemia were significantly correlated with variants of FSHR. The present study concludes that rs6165 and rs6166 were significantly related to clinical features of PCOS, regardless of providing direct disease risk.

Abstract
Background
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a reproductive disorder associated with several endocrine and metabolic alterations. The mechanism underlying this syndrome is controversial. On the other hand, drugs used for the treatment are associated with several side effects and poor in controlling PCOS phenotype. l-Carnitine (LC) has been reported to have a significant regulatory function on the redox and metabolic status of female reproductive system. Nevertheless, its regulatory pathways to regulate PCOS are still under investigation. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of LC on the steroidogenic pathways, oxidative stress markers and metabolic profile in letrozole (LTZ)-induced PCOS rat model.
Methods
For this aim, animals were divided into four groups (n = 6). Control group, untreated letrozole-induced PCOS group (1 mg/kg bwt) for 21 days, PCOS group treated with l-Carnitine (100 mg/kg bwt) for 14 days and PCOS group treated with clomiphene citrate (2 mg/kg bwt) for 14 days. Finally, body and ovarian weight, metabolic state(glucose and lipid profile), hormonal assays (testosterone, 17 β estradiol, LH and FSH levels), intraovarian relative gene expression (CYP17A1, StAR, CYP11A1 and CYP19A1 genes), ovarian redox state (malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione content (GSH) and catalase enzyme activity (CAT)) as well as serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were detected. Also, histomorphometric ovarian evaluation (number and diameter of cystic follicles, granulosa cell thickness and theca cell thickness) as well as immune expression of caspase-3 of granulosa cells of cystic follicles were determined.
Results
LC significantly improved ovarian redox state (GSH, MDA and CAT), steroidogenic pathways gene expression (CYP17A1, StAR, CYP11A1 and CYP19A1 genes), hormonal profile (Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone and estradiol), metabolic state (Glucose and lipid profile) histomorphometric alterations and decreased caspase 3 immune reaction of granulosa cells.
Conclusion
l-Carnitine supplementation can ameliorate the PCOS phenotype through its energetic, antioxidant and antiapoptotic functions as well as steroidogenesis regulatory role. This protocol could be modified to produce the best therapeutic benefits, and it could be regarded as a prospective therapeutic intervention for PCOS.

Abstract
Background The increased secretion of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) by the growing follicles has been supposed as a determinative feature of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The diagnostic performance of AMH in PCOS is superior compared to the free androgen index (FAI) and luteinizing hormone (LH)/follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) quotient. We established age-dependent reference ranges to further improve the diagnostic performance of AMH. Methods In a cross-sectional study, in samples of 4712 reproductive age patients, ranging from 14 to 50 years, BMI, AMH and other reproductive hormones were determined by immunoassay or tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to calculate age-specific reference ranges and the diagnostic performance. Results Age-specific diagnostic performances for Elecsys® AMH, FAI and LH/FSH ratio were established in the reference group. No significant difference in BMI was found between the groups. AMH values were significantly negatively correlated with age (r = -0.628, p < 0.001) in patients with normal ovarian function, but there was no correlation between age and AMH levels in PCOS patients (r = - 0.041, p < 0.174). In all the study groups, AMH showed a weak correlation between FAI and LH/FSH ratio (r = 0.302, p < 0.001 and r = 0.434, p < 0.001, respectively). The sensitivity/specificity for AMH, FAI and LH/FSH ratio were 89/96%, 71/69% and 75/72%, respectively, according to the Youden index. Conclusions We determined the age-dependent reference ranges for serum AMH levels in a large population-based study and calculated the age-specific diagnostic performance of FAI and LH/FSH ratio, which allows physicians to evaluate patients with PCOS who have normal AMH levels. AMH is suggested as the strongest diagnostic marker in patients with PCOS compared to FAI and LH/FSH ratio.

Abstract
The most common multifactorial endocrine disorder in females of reproductive age is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), affecting about 5-10% of females worldwide and 9.3% of females in India. Androgen excess in PCOS is caused as a result of defects in steroidogenesis genes. CYP11A1 is an imperative marker in the steroid synthesis pathway, and the altered expression of CYP11A1 has been reported to disrupt the synthesis of steroids and hence conferring risk for the development of PCOS. The present study aimed to analyze genetic variants (rs11632698, rs4077582, rs4887139) of CYP11A1 with PCOS from North India. The study included 270 PCOS females diagnosed according to Rotterdam 2003 criteria and 270 age-matched healthy non-PCOS females. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) was used for the genotypic analysis of the selected genetic variants. Association analysis of biochemical parameters (cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein) and anthropometric measurements with PCOS cases was done. The genetic variants of CYP11A1 (rs11632698, rs4077582, and rs4887139) demonstrated significant association with PCOS cases (p=1.0E-12, p=3.0E-3, p=1.0E-2, respectively). Binary logistic regression revealed that the dominant model of rs11632698 conferred 2.0 risk, and dominant as well as the co-dominant model of rs4887139 conferred risk of 2.2 and 2.4 fold, respectively, towards the progression of PCOS. The overall mean triglyceride levels were elevated, and mean HDL levels were lower in PCOS cases as compared to threshold values. The significant association of studied genetic variants suggested the important role of CYP11A1 in susceptibility to PCOS. The study was the first of its kind from our region and provided baseline data of genetics of PCOS.

Abstract
PURPOSE There is a relationship between polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and adipose tissue dysfunction (ADD), but this relationship is not clear. It has been recently shown that iron accumulation in adipose tissue is among the causes of adipose tissue dysfunction. Data on adipose tissue dysfunction in women with PCOS are insufficient. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between serum ferritin levels (iron accumulation biomarker) and visceral adiposity index (an indicator of adipose tissue dysfunction). METHODS The study is a case-control study. Women with diagnosed PCOS with 2003 Rotterdam Diagnostic Criteria (n = 40) were compared with non-PCOS group (n = 40). In this study, the cholesterol ratios, the homeostatic model evaluation index for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and the quantitative insulin sensitivity control index were calculated using biochemical parameters, and the visceral adiposity index (VAI) and the lipid accumulation product (LAP) were calculated using both anthropometric and biochemical parameters. In this study, insulin resistance was evaluated by HOMA-IR and adipose tissue dysfunction was evaluated by VAI index. RESULTS According to the results of this study, women with PCOS have a worse metabolic status than women without PCOS. However, this has been shown only in overweight and obese women, not in women with normal weight. CONCLUSION As a result, the presence of obesity in women with PCOS exacerbates metabolic status. Abstract
BACKGROUND Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and hypothyroidism are the most common endocrinological disorders among women of reproductive age. Since hypothyroidism occurs more frequently in PCOS patients, it is vital to explain its clinical impact. AIM To evaluate the impact of subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) and its treatment on the metabolic profile of patients with PCOS. METHODS 190 women with PCOS phenotype A were enrolled in the case-control study. They were divided into three groups: 38 women with PCOS and subclinical hypothyroidism, 76 women with PCOS and SCH under thyroid replacement therapy, and 76 women with PCOS and normal thyroid function (control group). Serum lipids, fasting glucose, and insulin, as well as oral glucose tolerance tests were performed. RESULTS In the analyzed parameters, there were no statistic differences between the groups in relation to thyroid function. BMI turned out to be the main factor dividing the patients in terms of serum lipids, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, and oral glucose tolerance test. TSH was associated with total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels, whereas BMI has a dominant impact on HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, and insulin resistance. CONCLUSIONS SCH is associated with mild lipid serum alterations in women with PCOS, but it is BMI to have a dominant impact on glucose and insulin. It seems that treatment of SCH in PCOS does not significantly alter lipid and glucose metabolism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bisphenol A (BPA), a widespread industrial substance is recognized as endocrine disrupting chemical and therefore could be associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) related metabolic disturbances. PATIENTS In this study 29 women of reproductive age with diagnosed PCOS were enrolled. METHODS BPA in urine samples was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. RESULTS BPA was detected in urines of 48.28% participants. The waist-to-height ratio (WtHR) was statistically significant higher in PCOS BPA+ in comparison to PCOS BPA- women (p = 0.046). PCOS BPA+ women had 6.88 times (95%Cl 1.3481-35.0600, z = 2.319, p = 0.020) higher risk for waist circumference above 80 cm and 4.95 odds (95%Cl 1.0169-24.096, z = 1.981, p = 0.048) to have WtHR over 0.5 when compared to PCOS BPA-. Statistically significant positive association between BPA urine concentrations and insulin serum levels (p = 0.038) was obtained. BPA urine values were associated with elevated HOMA-IR values and reduced HDL levels with moderate significance (p = 0.079 and p = 0.061, respectively). Also, there was 3.75 times (95%Cl 0.7936-17.7203, z = 1.668, p = 0.095) higher risk for PCOS BPA+ women to have testosterone levels above reference values. CONCLUSION The obtained results suggested that the BPA exposition in PCOS women was followed by increased metabolic risk through promotion of obesity, especially the visceral type, hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and elevated androgen levels.

Abstract
Background Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common and chronic disorder of endocrine glands where genetic factors play a major role in the susceptibility to the disease. The cytochrome (CYP) 17 enzyme is essential for androgens biosynthesis. Also, the CYP19 enzyme converts the androgens to the aromatic estrogens. Objective We aimed to investigate the association of CYP 17 MSP AI (T-34C) and CYP 19A1 (Trp39Arg) variants with the pathogenesis of PCOS in a population from Western Iran with Kurdish ethnic background. Materials and Methods The present case-control study consisted of 50 patients with PCOS and 109 controls. The CYP17 T-34C and CYP19A1 (Trp39Arg) polymorphisms were identified by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. The serum lipid and lipoprotein profile were detected by the Bionic Diagnostic Kits. Estradiol, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) levels were measured using the chemiluminescent method. Results The serum levels of estradiol and SHBG in PCOS patients were lower than controls (p < 0.001 and p = 0.06, respectively). However, the level of DHEA was higher (p = 0.01) in patients compared to controls. The higher frequency of CYP17 TC genotype in patients (30%) compared to controls (15.6%) was associated with 2.31-fold susceptibility to PCOS (p = 0.038). The frequency of CYP19 TC genotype was 6.4% in controls and 10% in patients (p = 0.42).
Conclusion The present study suggests that CYP17 TC genotype could be associated with the risk of PCOS. Also, the study indicated the sex steroid hormones level alteration and the lower level of SHBG in PCOS patients compared to healthy individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To evaluate the relationship of body composition indexes with altered metabolic analytical parameters that show higher risk of cardiovascular disease in young adults. MATERIAL AND METHODS A cross-sectional study. Sample of 1351 young adults, different body composition parameters were obtained such as Waist Circumference (WC), Hip Circumference (HC), Body Mass Index (BMI), Body Fat% (BF%), Waist-to-height Ratio (WHtR), and Waist-Hip Ratio (WHR), conicity index (C-Index), body surface area (BSA), abdominal volume index (AVI) and deep abdominal adipose-tissue (AT). Areas under receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs) and odds ratios for the parameters were analyzed and their optimal cut-offs. Separately a MANOVA was applied to altered metabolic analytical parameters and two body composition indexes (BMI and BSA) and their interaction. RESULTS BMI correlate significantly with metabolic analytical parameters (FPG r=0.08, TCh r=0.14, TGL r=0.23, HDL-C r=-0.23, LDL-C r=0.2, UA r=0.22, All P<0.01), BSA correlate with all (All P<0.001) except FPG. BMI and BSA correlate significantly with all metabolic analytical parameters (All P<0.001). The BMI individually predicts the changes of the six metabolic analytical parameters as a set [Wilk's λ=0.89, F(18,1570)=3.4, P<0.0001], but not BSA [Wilk's λ=0.98, F(6,555)=1.4, P=0.18], the interaction between these two indexes (BMI and BSA altered in the same individual) significantly predicts changes of the six metabolic analytical parameters of cardiovascular disease risk [Wilk's λ=0.97, F(6,555)=2.3, P=0.03]. CONCLUSIONS BMI and BSA correlate with cardiovascular disease risk factor. They are superior to WC, WHtR, WHR, BF%, C-index, AVI and AT.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Several studies have been designed to investigate the beneficial effects of probiotic supplementation on metabolic parameters and inflammation status in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), but results have been inconsistent. Herein, we perform a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate the effects of probiotic supplementation on glycemia control, lipidic profiles, weight loss and C-reactive protein (CRP) in women with PCOS. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION MELINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library were searched for RCTs that investigated the effects of probiotic in women with PCOS. Two investigators independently performed the screening, data extraction, and methodological quality assessment. Data were pooled as mean differences (MDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The statistical heterogeneity was assessed with the I2 test. Sensitivity analyses were performed by the leave-one-out approach. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS From the literature search, 26 publications were screened and 6 RCTs involving 406 PCOS participants (aged 25-28.5 years) with follow-up period between 8-12 weeks were included. The pooled results showed that probiotic supplement significantly affected the levels of fasting blood insulin (FBI), quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI), triglycerides (TG), and very low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (VLDL-C). However, no significant changes were found in other markers, including fasting plasma glucose, homeostatic model assessment-insulin resistance, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, body weight, CRP, and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate levels. The pooled result was robust after the sensitivity analysis. CONCLUSIONS Our finding provides evidence that daily probiotic consumption has beneficial effects on decreasing FBI, TG, and VLDL-C, and increasing the QUICKI score in PCOS patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study prepregnancy serum lipid levels and the association with the number of children. DESIGN Prospective, population-based cohort. SETTING Linked data from the Cohort of Norway and the Medical Birth Registry of Norway. PARTICIPANTS 2645 women giving birth to their first child during 1994-2003 (488 one-child mothers and 2157 women with ≥2 births) and 1677 nulliparous women. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES ORs for no and one lifetime pregnancy (relative to ≥2 pregnancies) obtained by multinomial logistic regression, adjusted for age at examination, education, body mass index (BMI), smoking, time since last meal and oral contraceptive use. RESULTS Assessed in quintiles, higher prepregnant triglyceride (TG) and TG to high-density lipoprotein (TG:HDL-c) ratio levels were associated with increased risk of one lifetime pregnancy compared with having ≥2 children. Compared with the highest quintile, women in the lowest quintile of HDL cholesterol levels had an increased risk of one lifetime pregnancy (OR 1.7, 95% CI 1.2 to 2.4), as were women with the highest low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, TG and TG:HDL-c ratio quintiles (compared with the lowest) (OR 1.2, 95% CI 0.8 to 1.7; OR 2.2, 95% CI 1.5 to 3.2; and OR 2.2, 95% CI 1.5 to 3.2, respectively). Similar effects were found in women with BMI≥25 and the highest LDL and total cholesterol levels in risk of lifetime nulliparity. CONCLUSION Women with unfavourable prepregnant lipid profile had higher risk of having no or only one child. These findings substantiate an association between prepregnant serum lipid levels and number of children. Previously observed associations between low parity and increased cardiovascular mortality may in part be due to pre-existing cardiovascular disease lipid risk factors.

Abstract
Background The aim of present study was to clarify the role of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)
γ Pro12Ala and C161T polymorphisms in the pathogenesis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and their influence
on lipid and lipoprotein profiles of patients. Materials and Methods The present cross-sectional study consisted of 50 women with PCOS, who referred to the
Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences Clinic between April and October 2015, and 233 unrelated age-matched
healthy women from the same region (West Iran). The PPARγ Pro12Ala and PPARγ C161T polymorphisms were gen-
otyped using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method. Fasting blood sugar
(FBS), serum triglycerides (TG), cholesterol, low density lipoprotein- cholesterol (LDL-C), high density lipoprotein-
cholesterol (HDL-C) and estradiol levels were measured. Results The serum level of estradiol was significantly lower in PCOS patients compared to healthy women. The PPARγ
Pro12Ala (CG) genotype increased the risk of PCOS 2.96-fold. The frequency of the PPARγ T allele (at C161T) was 21%
in patients and 17.2% in controls with no significant difference (P=0.52). In all studied individuals, the PPARγ CG geno-
type was associated with significantly higher levels of TG. However, significantly lower levels of total cholesterol and
LDL-C were observed in PPARγ TT individuals compared with those with the CC genotype. Within the PCOS group, the
PPARγ CG genotype was significantly associated with lower levels of estradiol compared with the CC genotype. Also,
the CG genotype was significantly associated with higher levels of TG when compared with the CC genotype. Conclusion Our study shows that, unlike PPARγ C161T, PPARγ Pro12Ala is associated with the risk of PCOS. Also,
we found that the lipid and lipoprotein profiles significantly vary based on PPARγ Pro12Ala and C161T genotypes.
