Abstract
AIM This study assessed the prevalence and etiological factors of maxillary midline diastema (MMD) in students attending different colleges and universities in Al-Hodeidah governorate, Yemen. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS A total of 1,661 participants from different universities in Al-Hodeidah governorate were assessed, analyzed, and screened for the presence or absence of MMD. Only 246 had positive MMD and were divided five age-groups. Maxillary midline diastema width was assessed, and three groups were established: groups I (0.5-1 mm), II (1.1-2 mm), and III (over 2 mm). Associations of MMD with gender, family history, and etiology of MMD were documented. The data were recorded and statistically analyzed. RESULTS Out of the total students from different colleges, 1,107 were males (66.6%). The 19-20-year age-group was the largest (712; 42.9%), and 264 participants had positive MMD (15.9%). A significant difference in MMD was found between genders (p = 0.002), but no significant differences were found among different age-groups (p = 0.511). Highly attached labial frenum attachment was the most frequent cause of MMD. Males were larger in number and had higher percentages for all different causes, and a significant difference was observed between genders in terms of highly attached labial frenum and generalized spacing parameters (p = 0.004, 0.009). The Chi-squared test showed significant differences in family history and presence of MMD between genders (p = 0.016). Large MMD widths were recorded in groups I, II, and III (1.00, 1.5, and 2.1 mm, respectively), which were together 108 (83.1%), 60 (87.0%), and 16 (53.3%), respectively. CONCLUSION The prevalence of MMD can be considered high in the participants and slightly higher in males. Among the causative factors of MMD, a highly attached labial frenum was the most common cause. Group II recorded the highest number of participants with large MMD widths, followed by group I. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Addressing the prevalence and causes of MMD can result in proper planning to minimize further esthetic appearances and functional complications. Abstract
Management of lateral incisor agenesis is a real challenge and needs a strong collaboration between surgical, aesthetic, and orthodontic dentistry. This case report managed upper lateral incisor agenesis with an orthodontic treatment leading to open spaces and placement of cuspids in lateral incisor area to avoid implant placement in maxillary anterior region. Temporary rehabilitation phase, using resin injected tray and removable partial denture, has been placed to maintain mesiodistal dimensions and restore aesthetic during pre-implant analysis and osseointegration. Once osseointegration was fully obtained, keratinized tissue augmentation has been obtained using connective tissue graft. Then, temporary implant fixed crowns allowed soft tissue modeling during interim rehabilitation. Finally, screw-retained permanent crowns were placed to fully restore aesthetic and function. This case goal was to optimize final results and reach patient complete satisfaction using orthodontic treatment combined with implant rehabilitation, and coupled with interdisciplinary management and well-time sequencing treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sex dimorphism has been implicated in oral health differences and the pathogenesis of oral diseases, such as tooth agenesis, periodontal disease, dental caries, and tooth loss. Tooth agenesis (TA) is one of the most common developmental anomalies in humans, and its prevalence and patterns are different across ethnic groups. The aim of this study was to investigate the phenotypes and sex-associated patterns of nonsyndromic tooth agenesis (TA) in Thai dental patients. METHODS One thousand ninety panoramic radiographs were examined. One hundred and one subjects (37 males, 64 females, 15-20 years-old) with nonsyndromic TA were evaluated. Differences in TA prevalence between groups were analyzed using the chi-square or Fisher exact test. RESULTS The TA prevalence, excluding third molars, was 9.3% and more frequently found in the mandible compared with the maxilla. The maxilla demonstrated a higher prevalence of first premolar agenesis than the mandible (P = 0.012), while the mandible had a higher prevalence of second premolar agenesis than the maxilla (P = 0.031). There were significantly more males missing one tooth than females, however, there were more females missing two or more teeth than males (P = 0.042). A missing maxillary left lateral incisor was significantly more frequent in males (P = 0.019), while a missing mandibular right lateral incisor was more frequent in females (P = 0.025). In females, the pattern of two mandibular lateral incisors agenesis was the most common and significantly present in females more than males (P = 0.015). In contrast, the pattern of one mandibular left lateral incisor agenesis was only observed in males and significantly found in males more than females (P = 0.047). CONCLUSIONS We demonstrate sex-associated differences in nonsyndromic tooth agenesis. The prevalence of single tooth agenesis was higher in males, while that of two or more teeth agenesis was higher in females. We found different patterns of lateral incisor agenesis between males and females.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of the study was to evaluate the cephalometric and dentoalveolar characteristics of maxillary lateral incisor agenesis patients, and to compare the findings to a matched control group without tooth agenesis, excluding third molars, from the same population. METHODS The pre-orthodontic records of 72 non-growing patients, who were treated at the Orthodontic Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Alexandria University, were used to address the aim of this retrospective study. Patients having unilateral or bilateral maxillary lateral incisor agenesis, with no history of previous orthodontic treatment, congenital craniofacial malformations, facial trauma, or surgeries were divided into two test groups based on the pattern of maxillary lateral incisors agenesis (group I: unilateral (UMLIA), group II: bilateral (BMLIA)). A control group (group III (CTRL)) having a complete set of permanent dentition (excluding third molars), and having no dental anomalies was age-matched with the test groups. Measurements were performed on the pre-orthodontic lateral cephalometric radiographs and the pre-orthodontic digital dental casts. The measured variables were compared between the groups using one-way ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis tests according to the normality of the variable. In case of significant results, both tests were followed by multiple pairwise comparisons using Bonferroni adjusted significance level. Significance level was set at P < 0.05. RESULTS BMLIA group showed a smaller SNA angle and maxillary length, a more negative ANB angle and Wits appraisal, and a larger Maxillo-mandibular differential than UMLIA and/or CTRL group. The dental and soft tissue cephalometric measurements did not show any significant differences between the groups. Dentoalveolar cast measurements showed that BMLIA patients presented with significantly smaller maxillary inter-canine width than UMLIA and CTRL patients. CONCLUSIONS Cephalometric analysis has shown that subjects with BMLIA have a statistically significant reduced ANB and maxillary length. Tooth eruption may play a role in the development of the maxillary arch.

Abstract
Background: Primary alveolar bone grafting inhibits craniofacial growth. However, its effect on craniofacial growth in one-stage cleft lip and palate protocols is unknown. This study investigated whether primary alveolar bone grafting performed during one-stage unilateral cleft lip and palate repair negatively affects growth up to 6–11 years old. Methods: The craniofacial growth, dental arch relationship and palatal morphology at 6–11 years old in children with unilateral cleft lip and palate were compared retrospectively. Two cohorts after a one-stage protocol without (Group A) and with (Group B) primary bone grafting at the same center were compared. Further, cephalometric measurements for growth were compared with an external cohort of a one-stage protocol and a heathy control. Results: Group A comprised 16 patients assessed at 6.8 years (SD 0.83), and Group B comprised 15 patients assessed at 9 years (SD 2.0). Cephalometric measurements indicated similar sagittal maxillary growth deficits and a significant deviation in maxillary inclination in both groups compared to the healthy group. Moderate to severe changes in palatal morphology were observed in 70% of the members in both groups. Conclusion: Omitting primary alveolar bone grafting under the one-stage protocol with two-flap palatoplasty studied did not improve growth at 6–11 years. The results implicate two-flap palatoplasty with secondary healing as having greater adverse effects on growth than primary alveolar bone grafting. Dental and palatal morphology was considerably compromised regardless of primary alveolar bone grafting.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature regarding the prevalence of malocclusion and different orthodontic features in children and adolescents. Methods: The digital databases PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, Open Grey, and Web of Science were searched from inception to November 2021. Epidemiological studies, randomized controlled trials, clinical trials, and comparative studies involving subjects ≤ 18 years old and focusing on the prevalence of malocclusion and different orthodontic features were selected. Articles written in English, Dutch, French, German, Spanish, and Portuguese were included. Three authors independently assessed the eligibility, extracted the data from, and ascertained the quality of the studies. Since all of the included articles were non-randomized, the MINORS tool was used to score the risk of bias. Results: The initial electronic database search identified a total of 6775 articles. After the removal of duplicates, 4646 articles were screened using the title and abstract. A total of 415 full-text articles were assessed, and 123 articles were finally included for qualitative analysis. The range of prevalence of Angle Class I, Class II, and Class III malocclusion was very large, with a mean prevalence of 51.9% (SD 20.7), 23.8% (SD 14.6), and 6.5% (SD 6.5), respectively. As for the prevalence of overjet, reversed overjet, overbite, and open bite, no means were calculated due to the large variation in the definitions, measurements, methodologies, and cut-off points among the studies. The prevalence of anterior crossbite, posterior crossbite, and crossbite with functional shift were 7.8% (SD 6.5), 9.0% (SD 7.34), and 12.2% (SD 7.8), respectively. The prevalence of hypodontia and hyperdontia were reported to be 6.8% (SD 4.2) and 1.8% (SD 1.3), respectively. For impacted teeth, ectopic eruption, and transposition, means of 4.9% (SD 3.7), 5.4% (SD 3.8), and 0.5% (SD 0.5) were found, respectively. Conclusions: There is an urgent need to clearly define orthodontic features and malocclusion traits as well as to reach consensus on the protocols used to quantify them. The large variety in methodological approaches found in the literature makes the data regarding prevalence of malocclusion unreliable.
