Qualitative variability of lima bean's VOC bouquets and its putative ecological consequences

Manipulation of VOC emissions with methyl jasmonate and carrageenan in the evergreen conifer Pinus sylvestris and evergreen broadleaf Quercus ilex

Plant defence can be induced by exposing plants to the plant hormone jasmonic acid (JA) or its volatile ester, methyl jasmonate (MeJA). Carrageenans (Carr) - sulphated D-galactans extracted from red algae - can also induce plant defences. In this study, the effects of exogenous MeJA and Carr application (concentration 300 and 12.7 μmol, respectively) on volatile emissions from two widespread evergreen woody species, Pinus sylvestris (nine Turkish and one Finnish provenance) and Quercus ilex (Italian provenance) were investigated. We collected headspace samples from seedlings and analysed the quality and quantity of volatile compounds emitted by treated and control plants. In total, 19 monoterpenes, 10 sesquiterpenes, 10 green leaf volatiles (GLVs) and two aromatic compounds were emitted by P. sylvestris from all the provenances studied. Foliar MeJA application clearly affected the volatile profiles of trees from all the provenances. Effects of Carr were genotype specific. In Q. ilex, emissions of sesquiterpenes, GLVs and the homoterpene (E)-DMNT were all induced by MeJA application. However, emissions of most constitutively emitted monoterpenes were significantly reduced. Carr application also led to a significant reduction in monoterpene emissions, but without corresponding increases in other emissions. Our results indicate that exogenously applied MeJA and Carr can both significantly modify the volatile profiles of P. sylvestris and Q. ilex, but also that there are important provenance- and species-specific differences in the overall degree of elicitation and compositions of elicited compounds.

Within-plant distribution of phenolic glycosides and extrafloral nectaries in trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides; Salicaceae)

Expression of foliar secondary compounds and extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) within the same leaves may be incompatible if secondary compounds repel beneficial insects that might otherwise be attracted to EFNs. This study examined the within-plant distributions of phenolic glycosides and EFNs in trembling aspen, Populus tremuloides, and their relationships to herbivore damage. Populus tremuloides expresses extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) on a subset of its leaves. We studied short and tall naturally occurring aspen ramets across multiple sites in interior Alaska. Contrary to our expectations, foliar phenolic glycoside concentrations were approximately 30% greater on leaves bearing EFNs than on leaves without EFNs. The mean concentration of foliar phenolic glycosides in short ramets was nine times that in tall ramets. Phenolic glycoside concentration was negatively related to leaf mining damage by Phyllocnistis populiella (Lepidoptera; Gracilliadae) at concentrations greater than 27 mg/g, whereas the presence of EFNs was unrelated to mining damage. The positive association of chemical defensive compounds and EFNs in leaves suggests that, for species with variation in EFN expression, negative correlations between herbivory and EFN expression may arise indirectly from associated effects of other, correlated types of defense.

Analyzing plant defenses in nature

A broad range of chemical plant defenses against herbivores has been studied extensively under laboratory conditions. In many of these cases there is still little understanding of their relevance in nature. In natural systems, functional analyses of plant traits are often complicated by an extreme variability, which affects the interaction with higher trophic levels. Successful analyses require consideration of the numerous sources of variation that potentially affect the plant trait of interest. In our recent study on wild lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) in South Mexico, we applied an integrative approach combining analyses for quantitative correlations of cyanogenic potential (HCNp; the maximum amount of cyanide that can be released from a given tissue) and herbivory in the field with subsequent feeding trials under controlled conditions. This approach allowed us to causally explain the consequences of quantitative variation of HCNp on herbivore-plant interactions in nature and highlights the importance of combining data obtained in natural systems with analyses under controlled conditions.
