Abstract
Objectives To investigate the correlation between the treatment of spleen deficiency constipation and the typical brain and intestinal peptides. Methods A total of 18 male Kunming mice were randomly divided into three treatment groups (n = 6): normal group (CC), model group (CM), and Massa Medicata Fermentata intervention group (CG). CM and CG were used to establish a spleen deficiency constipation mouse model. After the model was finished, CG was infused with 0.15 g/mL Massa Medicata Fermentata water infusion at a dose of 4 g/(kg·day), twice a day, at 0.4 mL. An equal amount of distilled water was infused in CC and CM for 7 days. The body weight and fecal water content of the mice were monitored during the modeling. Following the intervention, 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing was used to analyze changes in the microflora in the intestinal contents, and serum substance P (SP), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) levels were determined via ELISA. Results The modeling had no significant effect on the weight of the mice, the water content of the mice's feces was greatly reduced, and the feces were dry and hard. Constipation caused by spleen deficiency can lead to a decrease in serum SP and an increase in VIP and CGRP. After treatment with Massa Medicata Fermentata, SP, VIP, and CGRP all changed. Intestinal microbiota diversity of mice with spleen deficiency constipation, and the dominant microbiota and characteristic microbiota changed, indicating that the intestinal microbiota was unbalanced. After the intervention of Massa Medicata Fermentata, the intestinal microbiota diversity of spleen deficiency constipation mice increased; the dominant microbiota became Candidatus Arthromitus, Lactobacillus, unclassified Bacilli, Bacillus, Ligilactobacillus, Muribaculaceae, Bacteroides, and Enterorhabdus; and the characteristic microbiota became Candidatus Arthromitus. Through the analysis of characteristic microbiota and serum SP, VIP, and CGRP levels, Ligilactobacillus was found to be positively correlated with SP and negatively correlated with VIP, Akkermansia and Streptococcus were negatively correlated with SP, Candidatus Arthromitus was negatively correlated with CGRP, Akkermansia and Candidatus Arthromitus were negatively correlated with VIP, and Candidatus Arthromitus was negatively correlated with CGRP. Conclusions Massa Medicata Fermentata can affect the secretion of short-chain fatty acids in the intestine by altering the microecological environment of the intestine, then affect the secretion of serum peptides in mice, and alleviate the spleen deficiency constipation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal complaints during pregnancy. Consuming fruits and vegetables is often the first line of treatment due to their fiber content. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to determine the effect of combined fig-walnut syrup on functional constipation (FC) and quality of life (QoL) in pregnant women. METHODS In this double-blind, randomized controlled clinical trial, 90 pregnant women with FC were randomly assigned to receive combined fig-walnut syrup, fig syrup, or placebo (n = 30 in each group) using block randomization. Participants received 15 ml of syrup once daily at night, half an hour before bedtime, for 14 days and were followed up for 2 weeks after the end of the intervention. The FC, quality of life-gravidity (QOL-GRAV), and food frequency questionnaires (FFQ) were used to collect data. The questionnaires were completed once before the intervention and then the FC questionnaire was completed once a week for four weeks and the QoL questionnaire was completed at the end of the fourth week. To compare the outcomes among the study groups, one-way AONOVA, ANCOVA, Mann- Whitney U test, and Kruskal- Wallis test were used. RESULTS Following the intervention, although there was no statistically significant difference in the number of defecations between the combined fig-walnut syrup group and the fig syrup group (P > 0.05) at every four weeks, there was a statistically significant difference compared to the placebo (P < 0.05). Combined fig-walnut syrup (adjusted mean difference (AMD): -3.4; 95% confidence interval: -0.7 to -6.1; P = 0.008) and fig syrup (AMD: -5.8; 95% CI: -3.1 to -8.6; P < 0.001) improved QoL compared to the placebo group and there was no statistically significant difference between the combined fig-walnut and fig syrup (AMD: 2.4; 95% CI: 5.2 to -0.3; P = 0.104). CONCLUSION The consumption of fig-walnut syrup and fig syrup may help improve constipation symptoms and enhance QoL during pregnancy. Further studies are needed to reach a conclusive determination. Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Malva sylvestris L. is rich in mucilage and is traditionally used for the management of numerous ailments including gastrointestinal disorders. Functional constipation (FC) is a gastrointestinal condition characterized by defecation anomalies such as infrequent stools, difficulty in stool passage, or both in the absence of pathological abnormalities. FC can be reduced through lifestyle factors and dietary intervention. This consumer-based survey aimed to assess the efficacy of a M. sylvestris extract-based food supplement on the improvement of FC. METHODS Healthy participants (n = 56), enrolled in a consumer-based survey, took a food supplement containing a chemically characterized M. sylvestris extract at a dose of 20 mL/day (containing 750 mg of M. sylvestris extract rich in food fiber and polyphenols) for 20 days on the advice of their pharmacist. The study evaluated bowel movement frequency (intestinal diary), stool consistency (Bristol Stool Form Scale, BSFS), and abdominal pain (Visual Analogue Scale, VAS), at baseline (T0), after 10 days (T1), and after 20 days (T2). RESULTS A significant increase in bowel movement frequency and stool consistency (p < 0.001) with a significant decrease in abdominal pain (p < 0.001) was observed. Additionally, this food supplement was well-tolerated as no adverse effects were reported by the enrolled subjects. CONCLUSION M. sylvestris-based food supplement showed promising effectiveness and satisfaction in improving FC in healthy subjects, however, randomized clinical studies are needed to confirm these preliminary results.

Abstract
Bian-Se-Tong mixture (BSTM) is an optimized formulation based on the classical prescription "Zhizhu pill", which is widely used in the clinical treatment of slow-transit constipation (STC). The potential molecular mechanism of BSTM therapy for STC was investigated by network pharmacology prediction combined with animal experiments. The active components of BSTM were screened via the TCMSP platform. The GeneCards, OMIM and DrugBank databases were used to search for STC targets. With the help of the Biogenet tool, a protein interaction network between drugs and disease targets was constructed, and the intersection network of the two was extracted to obtain the key targets of BSTM in the treatment of STC. GO and KEGG enrichment analyses of key targets were carried out with Metascape. Loperamide hydrochloride was used to establish an STC rat model, and the key targets and related pathways were preliminarily verified. The important signaling pathways included the PI3K-Akt, MAPK, IL-17, cAMP, and cell cycle signaling pathways. The experimental results showed that BSTM treatment increased the body weight of STC rats and increased the fecal particle number, fecal water content and intestinal carbon ink promotion rate within 24 h. Further pathological changes in the colon of the rats were also observed. In-depth mechanistic studies have shown that BSTM can significantly reduce the apoptosis of intestinal Cajal cells, downregulate the expression of Bax and c-Caspase 3, upregulate the expression of Bcl-2 and c-kit, and promote the phosphorylation of AKT. The results showed that BSTM can significantly relieve constipation in STC rats via a mechanism related to activating the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway and improving Cajal cell apoptosis.

Abstract
Constipation is a prevalent gastrointestinal disorder, with its prevalence showing an annual upward trend. There are many factors involved in the occurrence of constipation, such as abnormal smooth muscle contraction and disorders of gastrointestinal hormone secretion. Amomum villosum (A. villosum) has been proven to be effective in improving digestive system diseases, but there is no report on improving constipation. Therefore, we used network pharmacology prediction combined with animal experiments to explore the key active components of A. villosum and their pharmacological mechanisms. The results of network pharmacological prediction showed that β-sitosterol was the key laxative compound of A. villosum, which may play a laxative role by activating the adrenoceptor alpha 1 A-myosin light chain (ADRA1A-MLC) pathway. Further animal experiments showed that β-sitosterol could significantly shorten the time to first black stool; increase faecal weight, faecal number, and faecal water content; and promote gastrointestinal motility. β-sitosterol may promote intestinal motility by upregulating the expression of ADRA1A and myosin light chain 9 (Myl9) mRNA and protein in the colon, thereby activating the ADRA1A-MLC signalling pathway. In addition, it is possible to improve constipation symptoms by regulating serum neurotransmitters and gastrointestinal motility-related factors, such as the serum content of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and acetylcholinesterase (AchE) and the mRNA expression of 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 4 (5-HT4), stem cell factor (SCF), stem cell factor receptor (c-Kit) and smooth muscle myosin light chain kinase (smMLCK) in the colon. These results lay a foundation for the application of A. villosum and β-sitosterol in constipation.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Buzhongyiqi decoction combined with acupoint application in the treatment of functional constipation in elderly people. METHODS (1) Four Chinese databases (China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Science Periodical Database, Chinese Citation Database, China Biology Medicine) and 4 foreign databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase) were searched, excluded, and included in randomized controlled trials of Buzhongyiqi decoction combined with acupoint application for the treatment of functional constipation in elderly people. (2) Systematic evaluation and meta-analysis using the RevMan 5.3 software. (3) Harbord linear regression and sensitivity analyses were conducted to evaluate publication bias using Stata 14.0. (4) Reliability of the conclusion assessment by sequential test analysis in TSA0.9 software. (5) Quality of evidence evaluation of outcome indicators was evaluated using Gradepro 3.6 software. RESULTS Eight randomized controlled trials including 658 case sample sizes were included. Compared with the control group, the intervention group showed improved clinical cure rate and effective rate of functional constipation in elderly people, reduced recurrence rate, and efficacy regulated the levels of defecation-related indices and indices of gastrointestinal function. In addition, trial sequential analysis indicated that the total clinical efficacy rate was conclusive, which showed that the therapeutic efficacy of the intervention group was superior to that of the control group. However, the incidence of adverse effects in intervention group was comparable to that of control group, and trial sequential analysis suggests that this result needs to be supported by additional research. CONCLUSION Buzhongyiqi decoction combined with acupoint application has potential value in the treatment of functional constipation in elderly people. Currently, there is insufficient clinical evidence to objectively evaluate safety grades for this combination therapy.

Factors Associated with Functional Constipation among Students of a Chinese University: A Cross-Sectional Study. Nutrients 2022; 14:nu14214590. Abstract
Functional constipation (FC) is prevalent worldwide and is an increasingly prominent problem among university students. However, there is a paucity of research on FC in university students. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of FC among Chinese university students by the Rome III criteria and investigate its associated factors. This cross-sectional study was conducted by online questionnaires among 929 university students at a Chinese university. Food consumption was assessed with the Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQFFQ) and dietary patterns were analyzed using factor analysis. A binary logistic regression model was applied to clarify FC-associated factors. The prevalence of FC among university students was 5.1%. Interestingly, among university students, the prevalence of FC with “complex” dietary pattern was significantly higher than those with “vegetable, fruit, egg and milk-based” and “livestock and aquatic product-based” dietary pattern (9.9% vs. 3.1% vs. 2.8%, p < 0.001). The prevalence of FC was significantly higher among university students with moderate to severe sleep disorders than those with the other sleep status (χ2 = 18.100, p < 0.001). Furthermore, after adjusting the covariates, “complex” dietary pattern (OR = 4.023, p < 0.001), moderate to severe sleep disorders (OR = 3.003, p = 0.006), overeating (OR = 2.502, p = 0.032), long mealtime (>30 min) (OR = 6.001, p = 0.007), and poor defecation habits (OR = 3.069, p = 0.042) were positively associated with FC among university students. Based on the above-associated factors for FC, improving dietary patterns and sleep status and developing good bowel and dietary habits are essential to prevent and alleviate university students’ FC.

Abstract
The aim of our study was to determine the prevalence, distribution, and risk factors for constipation in peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis (HD) patients in our center. In this cross-sectional study, 858 dialysis patients over 18 years of age (681 HD cases and 177 PD cases from our hospital) were enrolled. A constipation assessment scale (CAS) questionnaire was used to evaluate constipation status. Logistic regression analysis was performed to define independent risk factors for CAS scores. The prevalence of constipation in HD and PD patients was 52.7% and 77.4%, respectively. The mean CAS score in HD and PD patients was 1.73 ± 2.31 and 2.42 ± 2.34, respectively. Age ≥ 65 and diabetic kidney disease for renal failure were independent risk factors associated with constipation in the HD population (OR = 1.67, 95% CI: 1.15-2.90, P = .019; OR = 3.31, 95% CI: 1.65-6.11, P < .001, respectively). In the PD population, only serum prealbumin was independently associated with constipation (OR = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.79-0.96, P = .007). The multivariable logistic regression analysis demonstrated that PD modality, age ≥ 65 and diabetic kidney disease for renal failure were independent risk factors for constipation (OR = 2.15, 95% CI: 1.41-3.32, P < .001; OR = 1.65, 95% CI: 1.13-2.33, P = .003; OR = 3.19, 95% CI: 1.76-5.093, P < .001, respectively). The prevalence of constipation in PD patients was higher than that in HD patients in our center. PD modality for renal replacement therapy, age ≥ 65 and diabetic kidney disease for renal failure were closely associated with constipation in dialysis patients.

Abstract
Background: Pterostilbene (PTE) is a natural polyphenol compound that has been proven to improve intestinal inflammation, but its laxative effect on slow transit constipation (STC) has never been studied. This study aims to investigate the laxative effect of PTE on loperamide (LOP)-induced STC mice and its influence on intestinal microbes through a combination of network pharmacological analysis and experimental verification.Material and Methods: PTE was used to treat LOP-exposed mice, and the laxative effect of PTE was evaluated by the total intestinal transit time and stool parameters. The apoptosis of Cajal interstitial cells (ICCs) was detected by immunofluorescence. The mechanism of PTE’s laxative effect was predicted by network pharmacology analysis. We used western blot technology to verify the predicted hub genes and pathways. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and GSH-Px were tested to reflect oxidative stress levels and the changes of gut microbiota were detected by 16S rDNA high-throughput sequencing.Results: PTE treatment could significantly improve the intestinal motility disorder caused by LOP. Apoptosis of ICCs increased in the STC group, but decreased significantly in the PTE intervention group. Through network pharmacological analysis, PTE might reduce the apoptosis of ICCs by enhancing PI3K/AKT and Nrf2/HO-1 signaling, and improve constipation caused by LOP. In colon tissues, PTE improved the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway and upregulated the phosphorylation of AKT. The level of MDA increased and GSH-Px decreased in the STC group, while the level of oxidative stress was significantly reduced in the PTE treatment groups. PTE also promoted the secretion of intestinal hormone and restored the microbial diversity caused by LOP.Conclusion: Pterostilbene ameliorated the intestinal motility disorder induced by LOP, this effect might be achieved by inhibiting oxidative stress-induced apoptosis of ICCs through the PI3K/AKT/Nrf2 signaling pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Semen pharbitidis can be used for the treatment of constipation; however, the specific pharmacological effect and mechanism of its main pharmacological active ingredient pharbitis nil extract (PN) on functional constipation (FC) are still not clear.
AIM To investigate the regulatory effect of PN on constipation symptoms, intestinal motility, colonic myoelectric activity, colonic tissue morphology, intestinal microflora and neurotransmitters in FC rats.
METHODS A rat model of FC was established by intragastric administ-ration of loperamide (Lop) and then treated with PN. The number of fecal pellets within 6 h, fecal water content, intestinal transit rate, and colonic myoelectric activity were observed and recorded. The alteration of intestinal flora was measured by polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE). Hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining was used to detect the morphological changes of colon tissues. The expression levels of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), substance P (SP), and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) were determined by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
RESULTS PN could significantly increase the fecal pellet count and water content within 6 h, accelerate the intestinal ink propelling rate, and decrease the frequency and amplitude variation of colon myoelectric activity in FC rats. H&E staining showed that PN improved the colon histological changes induced by Lop. PCR-DGGE demonstrated that PN rectified the abundance of Bacteroidetes and Verrucomicrobia and increased the abundance of Lactobacillaceae and Bifidobacteriaceae in FC rats. ELISA showed that PN significantly increased the SP and 5-HT expression and decreased the expression of VIP in colon tissues of FC rats.
CONCLUSION PN alleviates FC caused by Lop and improves intestinal microflora and intestinal nervous system.

Abstract
Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs), such as irritable bowel syndrome, functional constipation, and functional dyspepsia, have had a high prevalence over the past few years. Recent evidence suggests that functional foods and bioactive compounds, such as probiotics and phytochemicals, may have a positive effect in treating the symptoms of the above diseases. In this systematic review study, 32 published studies were selected with the use of comprehensive scientific databases, according to PRISMA guidelines, with emphasis on recent interventional studies that reflect the effect of probiotics and selected phytochemicals on the improvement of FGID symptoms. The bioactive compounds in the selected studies were administered to patients either in capsule form or in enriched food products (yogurt, juice, etc.). According to the results, there is a correlation between the consumption of probiotics and phytochemicals, such as polyphenols, and the relief of symptoms in selected gastrointestinal disorders. Enriching foods that are regularly consumed by the population, such as fruit juices, yogurt, and cheese, with ingredients that may have a positive effect on gastrointestinal disorders, could be a possible novel goal for the management of these diseases. However, further evidence is required for the role of probiotics and phytochemicals in FGIDs to be fully understood.

Abstract
Background Functional constipation (FC) is one of the prevalent gastrointestinal disorders that affect people of all ages. Long-term FC has significant effects on the quality of life of patients. Although commonly used drugs have reliable short-term effects, they are easily addictive and have side effects. Therefore, pursuing a convenient drug-food homogenous program is critical for FC patients. Maxing Xianchang Su is a functional food based on traditional Chinese medicine. To investigate the efficacy and safety of Maxing Xianchang Su in FC treatment, we conducted a randomized controlled trial. Methods We carried out a prospective multicenter randomized parallel controlled study in three hospitals in Jiangsu Province, China, from January 2020 to March 2021, which included 206 FC patients. All patients were arbitrarily assigned into a treatment group and a control group at a ratio of 1 : 1; 103 cases in each group. The treatment group was given oral Maxing Xianchang Su, whereas the control group was treated with lactulose oral solution. The course of treatment was two weeks. The two groups of patients were evaluated after six weeks for symptom improvement before and after taking the drug. Furthermore, the safety of Maxing Xianchang Su was assessed. Results Both groups of patients successfully completed the study without shedding cases. The effective rates of the treatment group and control group after two weeks were 90.6% and 67.0%, respectively. The treatment group had a better curative effect than the control group (P < 0.05). The symptom score of the two groups improved compared with that before the treatment. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P < 0.05). During the treatment process, neither group experienced abnormal changes in blood lipid, blood glucose, routine hematuria, or liver and kidney functions. There were no adverse reactions in both groups. Conclusion Maxing Xianchang Su has a positive effect on FC treatment with reliable mid-term effect and a high level of safety.

Abstract
Chronic constipation is a common gastrointestinal disorder that occurs in the elderly and in women. Psyllium husk is widely used to treat this condition. Recent studies have shown that psyllium husk can improve the clinical symptoms of constipation by regulating gut microbiota, but its clinical effects and potential mechanisms in constipated women of reproductive age have not been previously investigated. We compared fecal microbiota after treatment with placebo (n = 29) and psyllium husk (n = 25) using 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) gene sequencing analysis. Psyllium husk relieved the symptoms of constipated women of reproductive age. Sequencing results showed that the psyllium husk group exhibited a different gut microbiota composition compared to that of the placebo group. Moreover, network analysis indicated more significant correlations and clustering of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in the psyllium husk group. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) annotation analysis showed that the relative abundances of metabolism-related KEGG pathways were enriched in the psyllium husk group. In conclusion, these findings suggest that the composition of gut microbiota was altered and that symptoms of constipation were alleviated via psyllium husk intervention. The changes in metabolic function might be related to constipation. Furthermore, these studies are warranted to elucidate the potential metabolic mechanisms contributing to chronic constipation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Functional constipation is a prevalent, burdensome gastrointestinal disorder whose treatment remains challenging. Combined therapy uniting multiple treatments may be promising. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) which tends to be an etiological treatment has been increasingly investigated in its management. Meanwhile, laxatives are widely used to relieve constipation temporarily, but their overall efficacy is poor. Therefore, we performed meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials to evaluate the joint efficacy of FMT and laxatives in functional constipation. METHODS We performed a systematic literature search of 6 electronic databases as of August 11, 2020. Randomized controlled trial of FMT together with laxatives vs laxatives alone in functional constipation in adults were included. Two reviewers independently performed the screening, data extraction, and bias assessment. Dichotomous outcome data were synthesized by risk ratio, and measurement data by weighted mean difference (WMD). RESULTS A total of 1400 records were identified, of which 5 were eligible (409 patients). Overall, compared to laxatives alone, combined therapy of FMT and laxatives more significantly improved total effective rate (risk ratio: 1.35; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.14, 1.60; I2 = 13%), Bristol stool form scale score (WMD: 1.04; 95% CI: 0.57, 1.51; I2 = 76%), reduce Wexner score (WMD: -3.25; 95% CI: -5.58, -0.92; I2 = 92%), Knowles-Eccersley-Scott-Symptom (KESS) score (WMD: -5.65; 95% CI: -7.62, -3.69; I2 = 0%) and patient assessment of constipation quality of life score (WMD: -18.56; 95%; CI: -26.43, -10.68; I2 = 78%). No serious adverse events were reported. The majority of included studies had poor methodological quality. CONCLUSION Combined therapy of FMT and laxatives may be a reasonably effective and safe treatment for people with functional constipation. However, caution is needed with the interpretation of these data due to the small sample size, high heterogeneity, and low quality of the studies. Besides, we expect that more studies will be performed exploring the efficacy and safety of combined therapy for functional constipation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Functional constipation is a common functional problem of the digestive system that has a negative impact on physical, mental health of patients and quality of life. At present, acupoint herbal patching as an adjuvant therapy is currently undergoing clinical trials in different medical centers. However, no relevant systematic review or meta-analysis has been designed to evaluate the effects of acupoint herbal patching on functional constipation. There is also a lack of systematic evaluation and analysis of acupoints and herbs. METHODS We will search the following 8 databases from their inception to November 15, 2020, without language restrictions: the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PubMed, Embase, the Web of Science, the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, the Chinese Scientific Journal Database, the Wan-Fang Database and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure. The primary outcome measures will be clinical effective rate, functional outcomes, and quality of life. Data that meets the inclusion criteria will be extracted and analyzed using RevMan V.5.3 software. Two reviewers will evaluate the studies using the Cochrane Collaboration risk of bias tool. We will use the GRADE approach to assess the overall quality of evidence supporting the primary outcomes. We will also use Spass software (Version19.0) for complex network analysis to explore the potential core prescription of acupoint herbal patching for functional constipation. RESULTS This study will analyze the clinical effective rate, functional outcomes, quality of life, improvement of clinical symptoms of functional constipation, and effective prescriptions of acupoint herbal patching for patients with functional constipation. CONCLUSION Our findings will provide evidence for the effectiveness and potential treatment prescriptions of acupoint herbal patching for patients with functional constipation. Abstract
BACKGROUND A variety of medical and non-medical treatments have been introduced for functional constipation relief. Here, we aimed to compare the efficacy of a combination of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and abdominal massage with each one of the treatments alone. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients with functional constipation based on Rome IV criteria were randomly assigned into the three treatment groups: group A (abdominal massage for 15 min daily), group B (PEG 20 g daily), and group C (PEG 20 g plus abdominal massage for 15 min daily) for 14 days. PAC-QOL questionnaire, Bristol stool scale were evaluated at baseline and two weeks after treatment. Constipation-associated symptom scores were recorded at baseline, two weeks and four weeks after treatment beginning. Descriptive statistics were provided as the mean ± standard deviation or number and percentage. P-value<0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS Forty eight, 47 and 48 patients in group A, B, and C completed the study, respectively. PAC-QOL, Bristol and Constipation-associated symptom scores showed a significant improvement in all study groups two weeks after the treatment compared to the baseline. At the end of treatment, the rate of straining, incomplete evacuation sensation, finger evacuation and the number of defecation was significantly lower in the group C (P < 0.04). Bristol score were significantly improved in group B (P = 0.029) in compare to other groups. The total quality of life score was also significantly improved in the group C (P = 0.028). CONCLUSION A combination of abdominal massage and PEG is safe, tolerable and more effective than each one of the treatments alone.

Abstract
Aim: To identify intestinal microbiota compositions in elderly functional constipation (FC) patients. Materials & methods: Fecal samples from 61 FC patients and 48 healthy age-matched volunteers were analyzed through 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Results: The intestinal microbiota compositions of FC patients were significantly different from healthy controls. Additionally, the species diversity of healthy controls was greater than that of FC patients. Indeed, the abundance of Firmicutes and Proteobacteria was significantly decreased, whereas that of Bacteroides, Prevotella, Lactococcus, Ruminococcus and Butyricimonas was remarkably increased in FC patients. Conclusion: Elderly FC patients appear to have a unique intestinal microbiota profile. Our findings should provide insight regarding the pathogenic mechanism of FC and evidence for exploring new therapeutic strategies in elderly FC patients.
