Investigation of Heavy Metal Effects on the Anaerobic Co-Digestion Process of Waste Activated Sludge and Septic Tank Sludge

The effect of copper, zinc, chromium, and lead on the anaerobic co-digestion of waste activated sludge and septic tank sludge in Hanoi was studied in the fermentation tests by investigating the substrate degradation, biogas production, and process stability at the mesophilic fermentation. The tested heavy metals were in a range of concentrations between 19 and 80 ppm. After the anaerobic tests, the TS, VS, and COD removal efficiency was 4.12%, 9.01%, and 23.78% for the Cu(II) added sample. Similarly, the efficiencies of the Zn(II) sample were 1.71%, 13.87%, and 16.1% and Cr(VI) efficiencies were 15.28%, 6.6%, and 18.65%, while the TS, VS, and COD removal efficiency of the Pb(II) added sample was recorded at 16.1%, 17.66%, and 16.03% at the concentration of 80 ppm, respectively. Therefore, the biogas yield also decreased by 36.33%, 31.64%, 31.64%, and 30.60% for Cu(II), Zn(II), Cr(VI), and Pb(II) at the concentration of 80 ppm, compared to the raw sample, respectively. These results indicated that Cu(II) had more inhibiting effect on the anaerobic digestion of the sludge mixture than Zn(II), Cr(VI), and Pb(II). The relative toxicity of these heavy metals to the co-digestion process was as follows: Cu (the most toxic) > Zn > Cr > Pb (the least toxic). The anaerobic co-digestion process was inhibited at high heavy metal concentration, which resulted in decreased removal of organic substances and produced biogas.

Evaluation of a zeolite/anaerobic buffled reactor hybrid system for treatment of low bio-degradable effluents

The main objective of this work was to reduce the inhibitory effects of high contents of organics, ammonia, and heavy metals in an anaerobic buffled reactor (ABR), and to prevent the sludge wash-out using zeolites as media. In this work, a pilot scale of ABR with 8 compartments and a working volume of 14.4 L was used, and the last four ABR compartments were filled with a zeolite. The bioreactor was operated at HRTs of 3, 4, and 5 days, zeolite filling ratios of 10, 20, and 30%, and influent chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations of 10,000, 20,000, and 30,000 mg/L. The results obtained showed that the maximum removal efficiencies of COD and BOD₅ reached 78 and 68%, respectively. The maximum removal was observed at a HRT of 5 days, a 30% medium filling ratio, and a COD of 10,000 mg/L. Increasing the filling ratio in the reactor increased the removal efficiencies of COD and BOD₅ but increasing the concentration of the influent COD and decreasing HRT reduced the removal efficiency of the reactor. The initial BOD₅/COD ratio was equal to 0.36, which increased by 46% when the medium filling ratio was elevated to 30%. The maximum biogas yield was 0.23 L/g of COD_Removed, and the specific methanogenic activity test verified the toxicity effect of the leachate on the gas-producer organisms. The results of scanning electronic microscopy and EDS showed that the zeolite medium immobilized the microorganisms and a biofilm was formed. Also the zeolite, as a well-known ion exchanger, decreased the concentrations of the major inhibitors (ammonia and heavy metals) and improved the reactor efficiency.

A novel process of the isolation of nitrifying bacteria and their development in two different natural lab-scale packed-bed bioreactors for trichloroethylene bioremediation

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a carcinogenic compound that is commonly present in groundwater and has been detected in drinking water sources for Mexican towns in the Mexico-US border area. Nitrifying bacteria, such as Nitrosomonas europaea, have been shown to be capable of degrading halogenated compounds, including TCE, but it is difficult to obtain high cell concentrations of these bacteria. The aim of the present study was to generate biomass of a nitrifying bacterial consortium from the sludge of an urban wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and evaluate its capacity to biodegrade TCE in two different natural lab-scaled packed bed bioreactors. The consortium was isolated by a novel method using a continuous stirred-tank bioreactor inoculated with activated sludge from the Domos WWTP located in Cd. Obregón, Sonora, Mexico. The bioreactor was fed with specific media to cultivate ammonia-oxidizing bacteria at a dilution rate near the maximum specific growth rate reported for Nitrosomonas europaea. Optical density and suspended solids measurements were performed to determine the culture biomass production, and the presence of inorganic nitrogen species was determined by spectrophotometry. The presence of nitrifying ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) was confirmed by PCR amplification, and biofilm formation was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Batch-scale experiments confirmed the biodegradative activity of the isolated consortium, which was subsequently fixed in an inorganic carrier as zeolite and a synthetic carrier such as polyurethane to both be used as lab-scale packed-bed bioreactors, with up to 58.63% and 62.7% of TCE biodegradation achieved, respectively, demonstrating a possible alternative for TCE bioremediation in environmental and engineering systems.
