Synthesis and Characterization of Ferric Vanadate Nanorods for Efficient Electrochemical Detection of Ascorbic Acid

This study reports the synthesis of ferric vanadate (FeVO₄) via a facile hydrothermal method, focusing on demonstrating its exceptional electrochemical (EC) properties on detecting low-density ascorbic acid (AA). The phase purity, crystallinity, structure, morphology, and chemical compositional properties were characterized by employing X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques. EC impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry techniques were also adopted in order to assess the EC response of a FeVO₄-modified glassy carbon electrode for sensing AA at room temperature. The AA concentration range adopted in this experiment is 0.1-0.3 mM at a working electric potential of -0.13 V. The result showed functional excellence of this material for the EC determination of AA with good stability and reproducibility, promising its potentiality in connection with relevant sensing applications.

Magnitude of undernutrition and associated factors among adult tuberculosis patients attending public health facilities in Haramaya District, Eastern Ethiopia

BACKGROUND

Tuberculosis is one of the top ten causes of illness, death, and disability throughout the world. Undernutrition reduces immunity, which makes latent tuberculosis more likely to become active tuberculosis. Tuberculosis makes these conditions worse. The body of a person suffering from TB has an increased demand for energy, which often causes a TB patient to lose a significant amount of weight and this can worsen acute undernutrition. The aim of this study was to assess the magnitude of undernutrition and its associated factors among adult TB patients in public health facilities in Haramaya district, eastern Ethiopia.

METHODS

Institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 330 adult tuberculosis patients on follow-up in public health facility of Haramaya District, eastern Ethiopia from January 10, 2021 to February 20, 2021. An anthropometric assessment was done after a face-to-face interview using a pretested structured questionnaire. SPSS 24 was used to analyze the data. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression model was used to identify factors associated with undernutrition.

RESULTS

The overall prevalence of undernutrition was 43.6% (95% CI 38.2-49.1%). Proportion of severe, moderate and mild undernutrition was 11.8%, 12.4%, and 19.4%, respectively. Age group of 18-24 years (AOR = 4.12; 95% CI 1.36-12.51), not have formal education (AOR = 1.76; 95% CI 1.01-3.08), having large family size (AOR = 2.62; 95% CI 1.43-4.82), low dietary diversity (AOR = 2.96; 95% CI 1.75-4.99), lack of latrine (AOR = 2.14; 95% CI 1.26-3.65), history of TB treatment (AOR = 2.56; 95% CI 1.19-5.54) and taking intensive phase of anti-TB drugs (AOR = 3.18; 95% CI 1.62-6.25) were factors found significantly associated with under nutrition.

CONCLUSION

The prevalence of undernutrition was high. Age, educational status, family size, dietary diversity, toilet facility, history of tuberculosis medication and intensive phase of anti-TB drugs were found significantly associated with undernutrition. The nutritional derangement could call for fast nutritional intervention in the management of pulmonary tuberculosis patients.

Determinants of Undernutrition among Adult Tuberculosis Patients Receiving Treatment in Public Health Institutions in Shashemane Town, Southern Ethiopia

Background

Undernutrition and tuberculosis are the major concerns of underdeveloped regions of the world. Tuberculosis makes undernutrition worse and undernutrition weakens immunity, thereby increasing the likelihood that latent tuberculosis will develop into active disease. Nevertheless, little has been understood about undernutrition among patients with infectious disease like tuberculosis in Ethiopia. This study was conducted to determine the magnitude of undernutrition and its determinants among tuberculosis patients in Shashemane public health institutions, Southern Ethiopia.

Methods

An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted in two public hospitals and ten health centers of Shashemane Town from March 12, to April 12, 2017, among 368 adult tuberculosis patients on treatment follow-up. Sociodemographic and socioeconomic characteristics and anthropometric data were collected. Data were entered into EpiData version 3.3 computer software and analyzed using SPSS version 20. Bivariable logistic regression analyses were done to assess the association between outcome variable at bivariate analysis, and multivariable logistic regression model was used to assess factors that were independently associated with undernutrition. Odds ratios along with 95% confidence interval (CI) were estimated to measure the strength of the association, and level of statistical significance was declared at P value ≤0.05.

Result

The overall magnitude of undernutrition among adult tuberculosis patients in this study was 28.8% (95% CI = 0.25–0.34). Patients in the age group of forty-five and above ((AOR = 3.39, 95% CI = (1.6–7.18)), residents in rural area ((AOR = 1.95, 95% CI = (1.07–3.54)), those with problem with eating ((AOR = 2.361, 95% CI = (1.332–4.185)), and those who are not on food supplementation ((AOR = 2.21, 95% CI = (1.06–4.58)) were significantly at higher risk of undernutrition.

Conclusion

The magnitude of undernutrition in the study setting was found to be significantly higher. Age greater than forty-five, living in rural area, and lack of nutritional care and support were identified as the factors associated with undernutrition. Thus, relevant actors should give attention to fast nutritional intervention together with standard therapeutic regimen in the management of pulmonary tuberculosis patients to curb their nutritional derangement.

Protective effect of vitamin C on chronic carbamazepine-induced reproductive toxicity in male wistar rats

The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of vitamin C on chronic carbamazepine-induced reproductive toxicity in male Wistar rats. Four groups of 10 rats were respectively exposed to distilled water (2 ml/kg), vitamin C (100 mg/kg), carbamazepine (20 mg/kg) and vitamin C followed by CBZ, after 30 min.. The regimens were given by gavage once daily for 15 weeks. The pituitary glands and testicular tissues were assayed for oxidative stress parameters, sperm characteristics, relative weight and histological changes. Sera samples were also assayed for concentration of sex hormones. The results showed that treatment with vitamin C protected against the alteration in parameters measuring oxidative changes, sex hormones, sperm characteristics, relative pituitary and testicular weight and histological changes. The study concluded that protection against CBZ-induced alteration in reproductive parameters by vitamin C was partly due to its antioxidant effect.

An ancestral human genetic variant linked to an ancient disease: A novel association of FMO2 polymorphisms with tuberculosis (TB) in Ethiopian populations provides new insight into the differential ethno-geographic distribution of FMO2*1

The human FMO2 (flavin-containing monooxygenase 2) gene has been shown to be involved in innate immunity against microbial infections, including tuberculosis (TB), via the modulation of oxidative stress levels. It has also been found to possess a curious loss-of-function mutation (FMO2*1/FMO2*2) that demonstrates a distinctive differentiation in expression, function and ethno-geographic distribution. However, despite evidences of ethnic-specific genetic associations in the inflammatory profile of TB, no studies were done to investigate whether these patterns of variations correlate with evidences for the involvement of FMO2 in antimicrobial immune responses and ethnic differences in the distribution of FMO2 polymorphisms except for some pharmacogenetic data that suggest a potentially deleterious role for the functional variant (FMO2*1). This genetic epidemiological study was designed to investigate whether there is an association between FMO2 polymorphisms and TB, an ancient malady that remains a modern global health concern, in a sub-Saharan Africa setting where there is not only a relatively high co-prevalence of the disease and the ancestral FMO2*1 variant but also where both Mycobcaterium and Homo sapiens are considered to have originated and co-evolved. Blood samples and TB related clinical data were collected from ascertained TB cases and unrelated household controls (n = 292) from 3 different ethnic groups in Ethiopia. Latent Mtb infection was determined using Quantiferon to develop reliable TB progression phenotypes. We sequenced exonic regions of FMO2.We identified for the first time an association between FMO2 and TB both at the SNP and haplotype level. Two novel SNPs achieved a study-wide significance [chr1:171181877(A), p = 3.15E-07, OR = 4.644 and chr1:171165749(T), p = 3.32E-06, OR = 6.825] while multiple SNPs (22) showed nominal signals. The pattern of association suggested a protective effect of FMO2 against both active and latent TB with distinct genetic variants underlying the TB-progression pathway. The results were robust for population stratification. Haplotype-based tests confirmed the SNP-based results with a single haplotype bearing the ancestral-and-functional FMO2*1 "C" allele ("AGCTCTACAATCCCCTCGTTGCGC") explaining the overall association (haplotype-specific-p = 0.000103). Strikingly, not only was FMO2*1 nominally associated with reduced risk to "Active TB" (p = 0.0118, OR = 0.496) but it also does not co-segregate with the 5'-3' flanking top high-TB-risk alleles. The study provides an evidence for the existence of an evolutionary adaptation to an ancient disease based on an ancestral genetic variant acting in a haplotypic framework in Ethiopian populations.
