Construction of a Drug Delivery System via pH-Responsive Polymeric Nanomicelles Containing Ferrocene for DOX Release and Enhancement of Therapeutic Effects

We report an amphiphilic block copolymer via poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether-D_labile-poly(caprolactone)-ferrocene (mPEG-D_labile-PCL-Fc) to deliver anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX). Lipase Novozyme-435 was used as a catalyst for ring-opening polymerization with ε-caprolactone, and an acid-sensitive Schiff base was used to connect the hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts; the ferrocene provided ferrous ions and was introduced at the end of the amphiphilic copolymer. The resulting copolymers were characterized by ¹H NMR/¹³C NMR and could be self-assembled in an aqueous solution to form nanomicelles with PCL-Fc as a hydrophobic core and mPEG as a hydrophilic shell. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the micelles were spherical and nanosized before and after DOX loading. The blank micelles also showed good biocompatibility. The drug-loaded polymeric nanomicelles exhibited a positive anticancer effect relative to the copolymers without ferrocene; the therapeutic effect of drug-loaded micelles containing ferrocene was more obvious. In vitro drug release results also showed that the polymer had a good pH response. Confocal microscopy also showed that polymeric micelles can effectively deliver and release the drug; the polymer containing ferrocene also leads to significantly improved ROS levels in tumor cells. Ferrocene can effectively and synergistically inhibit tumor cells with DOX.

Green Design of Novel Starch-Based Packaging Materials Sustaining Human and Environmental Health

A critical overview of current approaches to the development of starch-containing packaging, integrating the principles of green chemistry (GC), green technology (GT) and green nanotechnology (GN) with those of green packaging (GP) to produce materials important for both us and the planet is given. First, as a relationship between GP and GC, the benefits of natural bioactive compounds are analyzed and the state-of-the-art is updated in terms of the starch packaging incorporating green chemicals that normally help us to maintain health, are environmentally friendly and are obtained via GC. Newer approaches are identified, such as the incorporation of vitamins or minerals into films and coatings. Second, the relationship between GP and GT is assessed by analyzing the influence on starch films of green physical treatments such as UV, electron beam or gamma irradiation, and plasma; emerging research areas are proposed, such as the use of cold atmospheric plasma for the production of films. Thirdly, the approaches on how GN can be used successfully to improve the mechanical properties and bioactivity of packaging are summarized; current trends are identified, such as a green synthesis of bionanocomposites containing phytosynthesized metal nanoparticles. Last but not least, bioinspiration ideas for the design of the future green packaging containing starch are presented.

Starch-Based Fishing Composite Fiber and Its Degradation Behavior

The starch-based fishing composite fibers were prepared by one-step reactive extrusion and melt spinning. The effects of starch contents on the microstructural, thermal, dynamic mechanical, and mechanical properties of starch-based composite fibers were studied. And the degradation behaviors in soil of the fibers were also investigated. The compatibility between starch and HDPE is improved significantly by grafting maleic anhydride (MA) using one-step reactive blending extrusion. As the starch content increased, the melting temperature and the crystallinity of the fibers gradually decreased due to fluffy internal structures. Dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the transition peak α in the high-temperature region was gradually weakened and narrowed with increasing starch content; moreover, a shoulder appeared on the low-temperature side of the α peak was assigned to the β-relaxation related to starch phase. In addition, the mechanical results showed the significant decrease in the breaking strength and increase in the elongation at break of the starch-based composite fibers as the starch content increased. After degradation in soil for 5 months, the surface of the composite fibers had been deteriorated, while flocculent layers were observed and a large number of microfibers appeared. And the weight loss rate of the starch-based composite fibers (5.2~34.8%) significantly increased with increasing starch content (50~90 wt%).
