Kinematics and dynamics of the pelvis in the process of submarining using PMHS sled tests

Frontal-Crash Occupant Protection in the Rear Seat: Submarining and Abdomen/Pelvis Response in Midsized Male Surrogates

Frontal-crash sled tests were conducted to assess submarining protection and abdominal injury risk for midsized male occupants in the rear seat of modern vehicles. Twelve sled tests were conducted in four rear-seat vehicle-bucks with twelve post-mortem human surrogates (PMHS). Select kinematic responses and submarining incidence were compared to previously observed performance of the Hybrid III 50th-percentile male and THOR-50M ATDs (Anthropomorphic Test Devices) in matched sled tests conducted as part of a previous study. Abdominal pressure was measured in the PMHS near each ASIS (Anterior Superior Iliac Spine), in the inferior vena cava, and in the abdominal aorta. Damage to the abdomen, pelvis, and lumbar spine of the PMHS was also identified. In total, five PMHS underwent submarining. Four PMHS, none of which submarined, sustained pelvis fractures and represented the heaviest of the PMHS tested. Submarining of the PMHS occurred in two out of four vehicles. In the matched tests, the Hybrid III never underwent submarining while the THOR-50M submarined in three out of four vehicles. Submarining occurred in vehicles having both conventional and advanced (pretensioner and load limiter) restraints. The dominant factors associated with submarining were related to seat pan geometry. While the THOR-50M was not always an accurate tool for predicting submarining in the PMHS, the Hybrid III could not predict submarining at all. The results of this study identify substantive gaps in frontal-crash occupant protection in the rear seat for midsized males and elucidates the need for additional research for rear-seat occupant protection for all occupants.

Kinematic and Injury Response of Reclined PMHS in Frontal Impacts

Frontal impacts with reclined occupants are rare but severe, and they are anticipated to become more common with the introduction of vehicles with automated driving capabilities. Computational and physical human surrogates are needed to design and evaluate injury countermeasures for reclined occupants, but the validity of such surrogates in a reclined posture is unknown. Experiments with post-mortem human subjects (PMHS) in a recline posture are needed both to define biofidelity targets for other surrogates and to describe the biomechanical response of reclined occupants in restrained frontal impacts. The goal of this study was to evaluate the kinematic and injury response of reclined PMHS in 30 g, 50 km/h frontal sled tests. Five midsize adult male PMHS were tested. A simplified semi-rigid seat with an anti-submarining pan and a non-production threepoint seatbelt (pre-tensioned, force-limited, seat-integrated) were used. Global motions and local accelerations of the head, pelvis, and multiple vertebrae were measured. Seat and seatbelt forces were also measured. Injuries were assessed via post-test dissection. The initial reclined posture aligned body regions (pelvis, lumbar spine, and ribcage) in a way that reduced the likelihood of effective restraint by the seat and seatbelt: the occupant's pelvis was initially rotated posteriorly, priming the occupant for submarining, and the lumbar spine was loaded in combined compression and bending due to the inertia of the upper torso during forward excursion. Coupled with the high restraining forces of the seat and seatbelt, the unfavorable kinematics resulted in injuries of the sacrum/coccyx (four of five PMHS injured), iliac wing (two of five PMHS injured), lumbar spine (three of five PMHS injured), and ribcage (all five PMHS suffered sternal fractures, and three of five PMHS suffered seven or more rib fractures). The kinematic and injury outcomes strongly motivate the development of injury criteria for the lumbar spine and pelvis, the inclusion of intrinsic variability (e.g., abdomen depth and pelvis shape) in computational simulations of frontal impacts with reclined occupants, and the adaptation of comprehensive restraint paradigms to predicted variability of occupant posture.

Geometrical and Mechanical Characterization of the Abdominal Fold of Obese Post Mortem Human Subjects for Use in Human Body Modelling

Obese vehicle occupants sustain specific injury patterns in case of accidents in which the interaction between the seat belt and the abdomen may play a role. This study aimed to collect geometrical characteristics and to investigate the mechanical responses of the abdomen of obese subjects. Four Post Mortem Human Subjects (PMHS) with BMI ranging from 31 to 46 kg/m² were collected. CT-scans performed in the seated position revealed that the antero-posterior depth of the abdominal fold (from the inguinal region to the most anterior point of the abdominal surface) was much greater (170 mm max., 127 mm average) than the thickness of subcutaneous adipose tissues (85 max., 38 mm in average). Each PMHS was subjected to three infra-injurious antero-posterior belt pulls in a seated posture with a lap belt positioned (C1) superior to the umbilicus, (C2) inferior to the umbilicus, (C3) inside the abdominal fold between the abdomen and the thigh. During the C1 and C2 tests, the belt moved cranially, and the abdominal fold opened widely especially in C2. Forces remained below 1800 N, for maximum applied displacements ranging from 89 to 151 mm for C1 and C2, and 37 to 66 mm for C3. Finally, sled tests were conducted on two PMHS seated on a semi-rigid seat and restrained by a three-point belt equipped with pretensioners and a 3.5 kN force limitation at the shoulder. The first PMHS (BMI 39 kg/m²) was tested at 49 km/h (39 g peak) and sustained severe injuries (AIS 4 pelvis dislocation, AIS 3 bilateral femur fractures) attributed to the combined loading of the seat and lap belt force (about 11 kN and 7 kN, respectively). The second PMHS (BMI 46 kg/m²) was subjected to a 29 km/h test (8 g plateau) and sustained no injury. The lap belt slid inside the abdominal fold in the first case and deformed the lower abdomen in the second, providing limited restraint forces during that interaction and leading to a large body excursion for the first test. The results highlight the possible relevance of the abdominal fold at the abdomen thigh junction to model and study the restraint conditions of obese occupants using Human Body Models (HBM).

Frontal crash seat belt restraint effectiveness and comfort accessories used by older occupants

Objective: Around a quarter of older occupants use some type of comfort or orthopedic aftermarket accessory on the vehicle seat while traveling in a vehicle. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of comfort accessories on the performance of the seat belt restraint system in a frontal crash in terms of potential injury implications for older occupants.Methods: Eight frontal sled tests (43 km/h, 32 g) were carried out on a deceleration sled fitted with a three-point lap-sash seat belt and a front passenger seat from a common Australian passenger car for each test. A 5^th percentile Hybrid III anthropometric test device (ATD) was positioned in the seat and measurements were recorded for head center of gravity acceleration, chest acceleration, neck forces and moments and sternal deflection. Tests were carried out in a baseline condition and with seven comfort accessories. Each comfort accessory was inserted between the ATD and vehicle seat as it is intended to be used, with the ATD otherwise positioned as close as possible to the baseline test position.Results: Initial distance between the seat belt anchor and ATD hip was associated with a statistically significant decrease in Head Injury Criterion and increase in sternal deflection. Submarining was related to the ATD torso recline angle and angle of the lap belt from the seat belt anchor.Conclusions: Accessories placed between the seat back and the lumbar region of an occupant have the potential to increase the risk of submarining due to a change in posture and should be avoided if such a change in posture when seated with an accessory is excessive. Sitting on seat cushions resulted in the greatest increase in seat belt anchor to hip distances and hence largest increase in sternal deflection. Given the fragility, frailty and particular importance of chest injuries among older vehicle occupants, further investigation is needed to determine whether these changes in ATD sternal deflection observed with seat cushion use results in injury threshold limits being exceeded and whether pretensioners and load limiters would ameliorate these effects without causing other negative changes in occupant response or kinematics.

The Effects of Inboard Shoulder Belt and Lap Belt Loadings on Chest Deflection

Chest injuries occur frequently in frontal collisions. During impact, tension in the lap belt is transferred to the inboard shoulder belt, which compresses the lower ribs of the occupant. In this research, inboard shoulder belt and lap belt geometries and forces were investigated to reduce chest deflection. First, the inboard shoulder belt geometry was changed by the lap/shoulder belt (L/S) junction for the rear seat occupant in sled tests using Hybrid III finite element simulation, sled tests and THOR simulation. As the L/S junction was closer to the ASIS (anterior superior iliac spine), chest deflection of the Hybrid III was smaller. The L/S junction around the ilium has the potential to reduce chest deflection without significant increase of head excursion. For THOR, although the chest deflection reduction effect due to closer L/S junction to the ASIS was observed, chest deflection was still substantially large since the lap belt overrode the ASIS. Second, measures to hook the ASIS of the THOR by the lap belt were examined. Sled tests at 30 and 50 km/h were conducted with THOR in the rear seat, and it was demonstrated that the outboard lap belt and buckle pretensioners improved the lap belt and ASIS interaction, and were also useful in reducing the deflection at the inboard-side of the lower chest. Finally, the lap belt overlap with the ASIS was compared among 10 volunteers, Hybrid III, and THOR. Some volunteers had the ASIS located at the torso-thigh junction, and the lap belt did not overlap the ASIS sufficiently. However, although the ASIS location of THOR is also at the torso-thigh junction, the lap belt overlapped the ASIS because of the abdomen's and femur's shape. In the future, it will be necessary to consider that the outboard lap belt and buckle pretensioners are also effective for the ASIS restraint of all human car occupants.

Reference PMHS Sled Tests to Assess Submarining of the Small Female

In the last decade, extensive efforts have been made to understand the physics of submarining and its consequences in terms of abdominal injuries. For that purpose, 27 Post Mortem Human Subject (PMHS) tests were performed in well controlled conditions on a sled and response corridors were provided to assess the biofidelity of dummies or human body models. All these efforts were based on the 50th percentile male. In parallel, efforts were initiated to transfer the understanding of submarining and the prediction criteria to the THOR dummies. Both the biofidelity targets and the criteria were scaled down from the 50th percentile male to the 5th percentile THOR female. The objective of this project was to run a set of reference PMHS tests in order to check the biofidelity of the THOR F05 in terms of submarining. Three series of tests were performed on nine PMHS, the first one was designed to avoid submarining, the second and third ones were designed to result in submarining. In the first configuration, no submarining was observed in 3 cases out of 4 and only one iliac wing fracture occurred in one subject. In the second and third configurations, all subjects but one sustained submarining. In addition, two subjects out of three in the third configuration sustained substantial iliac wing fractures. Nevertheless, all configurations can be represented by at least one or several cases without any pelvis fracture. Corridors were constructed for the external forces and the PMHS kinematics. They are provided in this paper as new experimental references to assess the biofidelity of small female human surrogates in different configurations where submarining did or did not occur.

Reference PMHS Sled Tests to Assess Submarining

Sled tests focused on pelvis behavior and submarining can be found in the literature. However, they were performed either with rigid seats or with commercial seats. The objective of this study was to get reference tests to assess the submarining ability of dummies in more realistic conditions than on rigid seat, but still in a repeatable and reproducible setup. For this purpose, a semi-rigid seat was developed, which mimics the behavior of real seats, although it is made of rigid plates and springs that are easy to reproduce and simulate with an FE model. In total, eight PMHS sled tests were performed on this semirigid seat to get data in two different configurations: first in a front seat configuration that was designed to prevent submarining, then in a rear seat configuration with adjusted spring stiffness to generate submarining. All subjects sustained extensive rib fractures from the shoulder belt loading. No pelvis fractures and no submarining were observed in the front seat configuration, but two subjects sustained lumbar vertebrae fractures. In the rear seat configuration, all subjects sustained pelvic fractures and demonstrated submarining. Corridors were constructed for the external forces and the PMHS kinematics. They are provided in this paper as new reference tests to assess the biofidelity of human surrogates in different configurations that either result in submarining or do not. In future, it is intended to analyze further seat and restraint system configurations to be able to define a submarining predictor.
