Abstract
Listeria monocytogenes is a concerning foodborne pathogen incriminated in soft cheese and meat-related outbreaks, highlighting the significance of applying alternative techniques to control its growth in food. In the current study, eco-friendly zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) were synthesized using Rosmarinus officinalis, Punica granatum, and Origanum marjoram extracts individually. The antimicrobial efficacy of the prepared ZnO-NPs against L. monocytogenes was assessed using the agar well diffusion technique. Data indicated that ZnO-NPs prepared using Origanum marjoram were the most effective; therefore, they were used for the preparation of gelatin-based bionanocomposite coatings. Furthermore, the antimicrobial efficacy of the prepared gelatin-based bionanocomposite coatings containing eco-friendly ZnO-NPs was evaluated against L. monocytogenes in Talaga cheese (an Egyptian soft cheese) and camel meat during refrigerated storage at 4 ± 1 oC. Talaga cheese and camel meat were inoculated with L. monocytogenes, then coated with gelatin (G), gelatin with ZnO-NPs 1% (G/ZnO-NPs 1%), and gelatin with ZnO-NPs 2% (G/ZnO-NPs 2%). Microbiological examination showed that the G/ZnO-NPs 2% coating reduced L. monocytogenes count in the coated Talaga cheese and camel meat by 2.76 ± 0.19 and 2.36 ± 0.51 log CFU/g, respectively, by the end of the storage period. Moreover, G/ZnO-NPs coatings controlled pH changes, reduced water losses, and improved the sensory characteristics of Talaga cheese and camel meat, thereby extending their shelf life. The obtained results from this study indicate that the application of gelatin/ZnO-NPs 2% bionanocomposite coating could be used in the food industry to control L. monocytogenes growth, improve quality, and extend the shelf life of Talaga cheese and camel meat.

Abstract
Due to their high water, lipid, and protein content, meat and meat products are highly perishable. The principal spoilage mechanisms involved are protein and lipid oxidation and deterioration caused by microbial growth. Therefore, efforts are ongoing to ensure food safety and increase shelf life. The development of low-cost, innovative, eco-friendly approaches, such as nanotechnology, using non-toxic, inexpensive, FDA-approved ingredients is reducing the incorporation of chemical additives while enhancing effectiveness and functionality. This review focuses on advances in the incorporation of natural additives that increase the shelf life of meat and meat products through the application of nanosystems. The main solvent-free preparation methods are reviewed, including those that involve mixing organic–inorganic or organic–organic compounds with such natural substances as essential oils and plant extracts. The performance of these additives is analyzed in terms of their antioxidant effect when applied directly to meat as edible coatings or marinades, and during manufacturing processes. The review concludes that nanotechnology represents an excellent option for the efficient design of new meat products with enhanced characteristics.

Abstract
Foodborne pathogens are the main cause of human foodborne diseases and pose a serious threat to food safety. The control of them has always been a significant issue in food industry. With good biocompatibility and stability, nanomaterials display excellent bactericidal properties against many kinds of bacteria. In this review, the generation and application of nanostructures as antibacterial in the control of foodborne pathogens was summarized. The antibacterial effects of photocatalytic and contact bacteriostatic nanomaterials agents were mainly introduced. The influence factors and mechanisms of nanomaterials on the inactivation of foodborne pathogens were displayed. The photocatalytic nanostructured bacteriostatic agents can produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lead to charge transfer, which result in damaging of cell wall and leakage of small molecules under light irradiation. In addition, metals and metal oxide nanoparticles can kill bacterial cells by releasing metal ions, forming ROS and electrostatic interaction with cell membrane. Besides, the synergistic action of nanoparticles with natural antibacterial agents can improve the stability of these agents and their bactericidal performance. These current researches provided a broader idea for the control of microorganisms in food.

Abstract
Conventional methods of food preservation have demonstrated several disadvantages and limitations in the efficiency of the microbial load reduction and maintain food quality. Hence, non-thermal preservation technologies (NTPT) and alternative chemical compounds (ACC) have been considered a high promissory replacer to decontamination, increasing the shelf life and promoting low levels of physicochemical, nutritional and sensorial alterations of meat and fish products. The combination of these methods can be a potential alternative to the food industry. This review deals with the most critical aspects of the mechanisms of action under microbial, physicochemical, nutritional and sensorial parameters and the efficiency of the different NTPT (ultrasound, high pressure processing, gamma irradiation and UV-C radiation) and ACC (peracetic acid, bacteriocins, nanoparticles and essential oils) applied in meat and fish products. The NTPT and ACC present a high capacity of microorganisms inactivation, ensuring low alterations level in the matrix and high reduction of environmental impact. However, the application conditions of the different methods as exposition time, energy intensity and concentration thresholds of chemical compounds need to be specifically established and continuously improved for each matrix type to reduce to the maximum the physicochemical, nutritional and sensorial changes. In addition, the combination of the methods (hurdle concept) may be an alternative to enhance the matrix decontamination. In this way, undesirable changes in meat and fish products can be further reduced without a decrease in the efficiency of the decontamination.

Abstract
Drug-resistant bacteria are becoming an increasingly widespread problem in the clinical setting. The current pipeline of antibiotics cannot provide satisfactory options for clinicians, which brought increasing attention to the development and application of non-traditional antimicrobial substances as alternatives. Metal ions, such as iron and zinc ions, have been widely applied to inhibit pathogens through different mechanisms, including synergistic action with different metabolic enzymes, regulation of efflux pumps, and inhibition of biofilm formation. Compared with traditional metal oxide nanoparticles, iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) display stronger bactericidal effect because of their smaller ion particle sizes and higher surface energies. The combined utilization of metal NPs (nanoparticles) and antibiotics paves a new way to enhance antimicrobial efficacy and reduce the incidence of drug resistance. In this review, we summarize the physiological roles and bactericidal mechanisms of iron and zinc ions, present the recent progress in the research on the joint use of metal NPs with different antibiotics, and highlight the promising prospects of metal NPs as antimicrobial agents for tackling multidrug-resistant bacteria.

Abstract
Background and Aim Nanosized inorganic antibacterial materials have received increasing attention in recent years. The present study aimed to determine the antimicrobial activity of silver (Ag) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles alone and in combination with antibiotics against reference strains of pathogenic microorganisms as Staphylococcus aureus (Staph. aureus), Salmonella enterica subsp. Bukuru, Escherichia coli (E.coli) and Candida albicans ( C. albicans). Methods The antimicrobial effect of metal-nanoparticles (AgNPs and ZnONPS) and in combination with antibiotics was studied using the normal disc-diffusion method. Results Both AgNPs and ZnONPs had increased antibacterial activity with an increase in their concentration against Gram-positive bacterium (Staph. aureus), Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli and Salmonella spp) and no effect on C. albicans. The synergistic effect of antibiotics (azithromycin, cefotaxime, cefuroxime, fosfomycin and chloramphenicol) against E. coli was significantly increased in the presence of AgNPs compared to antibiotic only. However, all antibiotics had a synergistic effect in the presence of AgNps against Salmonella spp. On the other hand, the antibacterial action of AgNPs with oxacillin and neomycin antibiotics against Staph. aureus was significantly decreased in comparison with antibiotics only. The synergistic effect of antibiotics (azithromycin, oxacillin, cefotaxime, cefuroxime, fosfomycin and oxytetracycline) against E. coli was significantly increased in presence of ZnONPs compared to antibiotic only and also the synergistic effect of antibiotics (azithromycin, cefotaxime, cefuroxime, fosfomycin, chloramphenicol and oxytetracycline) against Staph. aureus was significantly increased in the presence of ZnONPs compared to antibiotics only. On the other hand, most antibiotics had an antagonistic effect in presence of ZnONps against Salmonella spp. Conclusion AgNPs and ZnONPs demonstrate a good synergistic effect with antibiotics and this may open the door for a future combination therapy against pathogenic bacteria.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the retention efficiency of three types of temporary zinc oxide cement trademarks on forced eruption using intracranal wire device. METHODS An in vitro evaluation included intracanal wire device displacement and detachment at 50g load force for 120 days and then the retention resistance at maximum load force. RESULTS All groups of temporary zinc oxide cements were efficient to support 50g load forces after 120 days. None statistical differences were found between groups. Zinc oxide cements supported a maximum retention load force, which exceeded in more than 84 times the lowest value obtained in controls (420g). CONCLUSION Zinc oxide cements are efficient to retain intracanal wire devices on forced eruption processes in vitro and allows removal of both when necessary (wire device and cement, respectively).
