Color Appearance of Various Provisional Restorative Materials for Rehabilitation Upon Aging

OBJECTIVES

 Color stability of provisional restoration is crucial for full mouth reconstruction, which is probably influenced by aging. Therefore, this study evaluated the effect of aging on the color appearance of different provisional materials.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

 Rectangular specimens (10 × 10 × 2 mm) were fabricated from computer-aided design-computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) (Vita CAD-Temp [VC], TelioCAD [TC], artBloc [RC]), autopolymerized (ProtempIV [PA], Luxatemp [LA], UnifastTrad [UA]), and heat-polymerized polymer (Major C&B [MH]). Each was divided into aging (AG, 5,000 thermocycles of 5°/55°C) and non-aging group (n = 21/group). Color parameters were determined using a spectrophotometer through the CIELAB system. The L*, a*, and b* data were calculated for color appearance (∆E), translucency parameter (TP), contrast ratio (CR), and opalescence parameter (OP) for each.

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

 An analysis of variance and multiple comparisons were determined for a significant difference in color appearance alteration of materials upon aging (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

 Statistically significant differences of L*, a*, b*, ∆E, TP, CR, and OP due to the effect of types of material (p < 0.05), aging effect (p < 0.05), and their interactions (p < 0.05) were indicated. Aging affects the color appearance, lightness, chromaticity, translucency, contrast, and opalescence of various types of provisional materials. Color appearance alteration of provisional materials was significantly indicated upon aging (p < 0.05) but within the perceivable limit of clinical acceptance (∆E diff < 3.0), except for PA and MH. Color stability of CAD-CAM-based poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA) and autopolymerized PMMA upon aging were better than bis-acryl resin and heat-polymerized PMMA. The TP, CR, and OP alterations of tested materials upon aging were within the perceivable limit.

CONCLUSION

 Color appearance of provisional restorative materials was influenced by aging. The CAD-CAM-based PMMA and autopolymerized PMMA materials showed better color stability than bis-acryl provisional resin and heat-polymerized PMMA upon aging. Therefore, they were suggested as provisional materials for oral rehabilitation.

Marginal and internal fit and fracture resistance of three-unit provisional restorations fabricated by additive, subtractive, and conventional methods

OBJECTIVES

To compare the marginal and internal fit and fracture resistance of three-unit provisional fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) fabricated by additive, subtractive, and conventional methods.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Eighty 3-unit FDPs were fabricated on metal dies of the maxillary right second premolar and second molar by four different techniques (n = 20): The direct method by using autopolymerizing polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), indirect method by the compression molding technique, subtractive manufacturing by using PMMA blocks, and additive manufacturing by using digital light processing technology. The adaptation of restorations at the marginal, axial, cuspal, and fossa areas was assessed by using the silicone replica technique. After thermocycling and cyclic loading, the fracture resistance was measured by a universal testing machine. Data were analyzed by a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), ANOVA, and Tukey test (α = .05).

RESULTS

The mean gap measured in the additive group was lower than that in all other groups at all points (p < .05); however, the difference in the marginal gap with the subtractive group was not significant (p = .995). The mean marginal and axial gaps in the subtractive group were significantly lower than the corresponding values in both conventional groups (p < .05). A significant difference existed between all groups regarding the mean cuspal and fossa gaps (p < .05). The mean fracture resistance of the additive group was significantly higher than that of indirect (p = .018) and direct (p < .001) groups, and the fracture resistance of the subtractive group was significantly higher than that of the direct group (p = .020).

CONCLUSION

The digitally fabricated provisional FDPs showed superior marginal and internal fit and higher fracture resistance than the conventionally fabricated FDPs. Between the digital methods, the additive technique yielded superior internal fit.

An Interdisciplinary Study Regarding the Characteristics of Dental Resins Used for Temporary Bridges

Background and Objectives: The surface condition of the materials that are used for temporary prostheses influences their microbial colonization, with a direct impact on the oral tissues. This study aims at a comparative analysis of three types of resins for temporary bridges using conventional and digital technologies. The attention was focused on the analysis of the surface characteristics and mechanical strength of these materials. Materials and Methods: The surface condition was assessed for three distinct materials both before and after polishing- heat-curing resin Superpont C + B (SpofaDental, Jicin, Czech Republic) used unconventional technology, Zotion dental milling polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) block (Zotion, Chongqing, China) for provisional crowns/bridges used in digital subtractive technologies and Freeprint Temp (Detax GmbH & Co. KG, Ettlingen, Germany) resin for temporary crowns and bridges that are used in 3D printing technologies. The two-way ANOVA analysis indicated that polishing leads to a statistically significant increase in roughness coefficients for all the three resins that were tested (p < 0.001). While the highest roughness coefficients were displayed in the 3D cured sample, the largest decrease was reported by the milled sample Results: The results revealed that surface roughness was significantly influenced by both the type of resin that was used (p < 0.001) and the treatment that was induced by finishing and polishing (p < 0.001). Similar p-values were obtained for each of the three resins. Conclusions: The results demonstrated a significant optimization of the surfaces after finishing and polishing and statistically significant differences between the surface parameters and the mechanical properties of the samples. The low values of the roughness and the acceptable values of the mechanical resistance for the conventional samples indicate these materials for the long-term temporary bridge’s realization, allowing the correct restoration of the functions and the rehabilitation at the oral level.

Shear bond strength of different luting agents to polyether ether ketone

Background

Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) was recently introduced to dentistry. However, difficulty in provision of a strong durable bond is its main drawback. Thus, precise surface treatment and use of a suitable luting agent are imperative for bonding of PEEK restorations. This study aimed to assess the effect of type of luting agent on shear bond strength (SBS) of PEEK.

Materials and Methods

In this in vitro study, 60 square-shaped PEEK samples were fabricated and sandblasted with 110 μm Al₂O₃ particles. The samples were then divided into four groups based on the type of cement used (n = 15): zinc phosphate cement, Panavia F2, Panavia V5, and resin-modified glass-ionomer (RMGI) cement. After bonding, the samples were thermocycled for 5000 cycles. The SBS was measured by a universal testing machine. The surface of samples was inspected under a video measuring machine to determine the mode of failure. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test via SPSS version 24 (α = 0.05).

Results

RMGI did not bond to PEEK. The SBS values were 4.02 ± 2.87 megapascals (MPa) for Panavia V5, 10.84 ± 6.05 MPa for Panavia F2, and 10.50 ± 2.88 MPa for zinc phosphate. The SBS in the Panavia V5 group was significantly lower than that in the Panavia F2 (P = 0.001) and zinc phosphate (P < 0.001) groups. No significant difference existed between the Panavia F2 and zinc phosphate groups in this respect (P > 0.05).

Conclusion

Panavia F2 resin cement and zinc phosphate conventional cement provided the highest bond strength to PEEK, while RMGI did not bond to PEEK.

Flexural Strength of Various Provisional Restorative Materials for Rehabilitation After Aging

PURPOSE

Durability of provisional restoration is crucial for full-mouth reconstruction, which may be influenced by aging. This study evaluated the effect of aging on the flexural strength of provisional materials for oral rehabilitation.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Bar specimens (2×2×25 mm) were fabricated from CAD-CAM [Vita CAD-Temp^® (VC), Telio^® CAD (TC), artBloc^® (RC)], autopolymerized [Protemp™IV (PA), Luxatemp^® (LA), Unifast™Trad (UA)], and heat-polymerized polymer [Major^® C & B; (MH)]. Each was divided into aging (AG, 5000 thermocycles of 5°/55°C) and nonaging groups (NG, n = 15/group). Flexural strength (σ, MPa) was determined in a universal testing machine at 1 mm/min crosshead speed. An analysis of variance and multiple comparisons were determined for significant difference (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

TCNG indicated the highest mean of σ (133.49 ±4.32), whereas VCNG indicated the lowest mean of σ (84.62 ±3.73) for nonaging. Upon aging process, TCAG revealed the highest mean of σ (123.11 ±4.55), while VCAG possessed the lowest mean of σ (84.05 ±6.39). Significant differences among various provisional materials were indicated (p = 0.001). Aging significantly affected flexural strength (p = 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The CAD-CAM provisional material possessed higher flexural strength than heat-polymerized PMMA and autopolymerized PMMA, which was suggested as a provisional material for rehabilitation. Aging reduced strength for all materials tested.
