Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study compared the tooth morphology, internal fit, occlusion, and proximal contacts of dental crowns automatically generated via two deep learning (DL)-based dental software systems with those manually designed by an experienced dental technician using conventional software. METHODS Thirty partial arch scans of prepared posterior teeth were used. The crowns were designed using two DL-based methods (AA and AD) and a technician-based method (NC). The crown design outcomes were three-dimensionally compared, focusing on tooth morphology, internal fit, occlusion, and proximal contacts, by calculating the geometric relationship. Statistical analysis utilized the independent t-test, Mann-Whitney test, one-way ANOVA, and Kruskal-Wallis test with post hoc pairwise comparisons (α = 0.05). RESULTS The AA and AD groups, with the NC group as a reference, exhibited no significant tooth morphology discrepancies across entire external or occlusal surfaces. The AD group exhibited higher root mean square and positive average values on the axial surface (P < .05). The AD and NC groups exhibited a better internal fit than the AA group (P < .001). The cusp angles were similar across all groups (P = .065). The NC group yielded more occlusal contact points than the AD group (P = .006). Occlusal and proximal contact intensities varied among the groups (both P < .001). CONCLUSIONS Crowns designed by using both DL-based software programs exhibited similar morphologies on the occlusal and axial surfaces; however, they differed in internal fit, occlusion, and proximal contacts. Their overall performance was clinically comparable to that of the technician-based method in terms of the internal fit and number of occlusal contact points. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE DL-based dental software for crown design can streamline the digital workflow in restorative dentistry, ensuring clinically-acceptable outcomes on tooth morphology, internal fit, occlusion, and proximal contacts. It can minimize the necessity of additional design optimization by dental technician.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Functional jaw orthopaedics, produces a radical change in the occlusal scheme and the masticatory apparatus, particularly in patients with Class II malocclusion. It remains to be seen how the changes brought about by a functional appliance alter the masticatory ability of a growing child, who needs the necessary nutrition to properly grow the craniofacial region. MATERIALS AND METHODS Pretreatment and Post-treatment values of masticatory efficiency and the distribution of the occlusal load at centric occlusion were evaluated and compared for 20 patients with Class II division 1 malocclusion undergoing functional jaw orthopaedics. RESULTS Significant increase in the masticatory efficiency was seen during and after treatment (p < 0.5) There was an increase in the anterior distribution of occlusal load associated with a concomitant decrease in the posterior region at centric occlusion. CONCLUSION Improvement in the masticatory efficiency was observed after treatment of a retrognathic mandible with functional jaw orthopaedics in the adolescent participants with Class II malocclusion. This highlights the importance of treatment with functional jaw orthopaedics, which apart from providing esthetic and functional improvement also improves the ability of a growing child to extract proper nutrition from his/her diet.

Abstract
The present systematic review was done to assess the available literatures on changes in the number of occlusal contacts (NOC), occlusal contact surface areas, and occlusal force distribution (OFD) with vacuum-formed retainers (VFRs) or clear overlay retainers during retention and to compare them with other retainers. Six electronic databases (Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Lilacs, and Google Scholar) were searched. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and controlled clinical trials (CCTs) reporting on occlusal contact changes with VFRs were included. A total of nine articles were included in this review: three RCTs, five prospective controlled trials (PCTs), and one CCT. The Cochrane risk of bias tool and ROBINS-I tool were used for risk of bias assessment. The three RCTs showed moderate risk of bias, and out of five CCTs, four showed low risk of bias, and one showed moderate risk of bias. One CCT showed a low risk of bias in the ROBINS-I tool. Two out of four studies reported improved occlusal surface area (OSA) with VFRs when assessed at the end of six months and 12 months; one out of four studies reported improved NOC; and one study reported a decrease in OFD anteriorly and an increase in OFD posteriorly after two months of retention. On comparison between the groups, the other retainer groups showed more NOCs compared to VFRs. The limited available evidence suggests an increase in OSA and no change in NOCs and OFD with VFRs during retention. No significant differences between VFRs and other retainers for OSA and OFD were noted, and more NOCs were noted for other retainer groups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study was conducted to detect the overall performance of both static and dynamic occlusion in post-orthodontic patients using quantified methods, and to ascertain the correlation between the two states of occlusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 112 consecutive patients evaluated by ABO-OGS were included in this study. Based on the pre-treatment Angle's classification of the malocclusion, samples were divided into four groups. After removing orthodontic appliances, each patients underwent the American Board of Orthodontic objective grading system (ABO-OGS) and T-Scan evaluations. All the scores were compared within these groups. Statistical evaluation included reliability tests, multivariate ANOVA, and correlation analyses (p < 0.05 was considered significant). RESULTS The mean ABO-OGS score was satisfactory and did not differ by Angle classifications. The indices making substantial contributions to ABO-OGS were occlusal contacts, occlusal relationships, overjet, and alignment. Disocclusion time in post-orthodontic patients was longer than normal. Occlusion time, disocclusion time, and force distribution during dynamic motions were considerably influenced by static ABO-OGS measurements, especially occlusal contacts, buccolingual inclination, and alignment. CONCLUSION Post-orthodontic cases that passed the static evaluation of clinicians and ABO-OGS may nevertheless be left with dental casts interference in dynamic motions. Both static and dynamic occlusion should be extensively evaluated before ending orthodontic treatment. Further research is needed on dynamic occlusal guidelines and standards.

Abstract
This systematic review aimed to critically assess the available evidence regarding the effectiveness and efficiency of clear aligners in the comprehensive treatment of complex cases accompanied by premolars extraction. An electronic literature search by two reviewers was independently done on 27 February 2023 in the following databases without time and language limitations: Pubmed®, Scoups®, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library database, Web of Science™, and Proquest Database Open. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of any type, non-randomized clinical trials (CCT), cohort studies, and prospective, retrospective, and cross-sectional studies were reviewed. The risk of bias in included studies was assessed using the Risk of Bias (RoB 2.0) tool for randomized trials and the Risk of Bias in Non-randomized Studies (ROBINS-I) tool for non-randomized studies. After carefully searching the literature, six trials were included in this systematic review, three RCTs, two retrospective cohort studies, and one CCT. Two hundred eighty-three patients were included (186 females, 97 males). Three studies found that there were no differences between the clear aligners and fixed appliances when evaluations were done using the American Board of Orthodontists Objective Grading System (ABO-OGS) or the Peer Assessment Rating (PAR) index. Two studies found that there were some differences between predicted and achieved tooth movements when clear aligners were used in premolars extraction cases. Based on the included studies, the duration of treatment was shorter with fixed appliances than the clear aligners when applied to orthodontic extraction cases. Both clear aligners and fixed appliances were found effective in the orthodontic treatment of premolar extraction-based cases. Fixed appliances have the advantage of achieving better buccolingual inclination and occlusal contacts in a shorter treatment duration. Treatment with clear aligners might be associated with differences between predicted and achieved tooth movements. Therefore, the characteristics of these techniques should be considered when making a treatment decision.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study utilised an Artificial Intelligence (AI) method, namely 3D-Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Network (3D-DCGAN), which is one of the true 3D machine learning methods, as an automatic algorithm to design a dental crown. METHODS Six hundred sets of digital casts containing mandibular second premolars and their adjacent and antagonist teeth obtained from healthy personnel were machine-learned using 3D-DCGAN. Additional 12 sets of data were used as the test dataset, whereas the natural second premolars in the test dataset were compared with the designs in (1) 3D-DCGAN, (2) CEREC Biogeneric, and (3) CAD for morphological parameters of 3D similarity, cusp angle, occlusal contact point number and area, and in silico fatigue simulations with finite element (FE) using lithium disilicate material. RESULTS The 3D-DCGAN design and natural teeth had the lowest discrepancy in morphology compared with the other groups (root mean square value = 0.3611). The Biogeneric design showed a significantly (p < 0.05) higher cusp angle (67.11°) than that of the 3D-DCGAN design (49.43°) and natural tooth (54.05°). No significant difference was observed in the number and area of occlusal contact points among the four groups. FE analysis showed that the 3D-DCGAN design had the best match to the natural tooth regarding the stress distribution in the crown. The 3D-DCGAN design was subjected to 26.73 MPa and the natural tooth was subjected to 23.97 MPa stress at the central fossa area under physiological occlusal force (300 N); the two groups showed similar fatigue lifetimes (F-N curve) under simulated cyclic loading of 100-400 N. Designs with Biogeneric or technician would yield respectively higher or lower fatigue lifetime than natural teeth. SIGNIFICANCE This study demonstrated that 3D-DCGAN could be utilised to design personalised dental crowns with high accuracy that can mimic both the morphology and biomechanics of natural teeth.

Abstract
Introduction The importance of disocclusion in maintaining the health of the stomatognathic system is well established. However, the quantification of the same is limited. This study aimed to determine the amount of posterior teeth disocclusion in protrusive and laterotrusive movements to establish the desired disocclusion in occlusal treatments. Materials and methods Twenty dentate subjects with Angles Class I occlusion, 18-30 years, were included in the study. Direct and indirect techniques measured disocclusion at the mesiobuccal cusp tip of the mandibular first molar. In the direct technique, the protrusive and working and nonworking records were made intraorally at the edge-to-edge position of maxillary and mandibular central incisors and canines, respectively. For the indirect technique, putty indices were made on a semi-adjustable articulator at 2 millimeters (mm) eccentric movements and the disocclusion records were then made intraorally using indices at the predetermined excursions. The records were trimmed, and the disocclusion was measured using an optical microscope (ZEISS Axio Imager 2; Carl Zeiss Microscopy Deutschland GmbH, Oberkochen, Germany). The comparison of disocclusion by both techniques was done by paired t-test. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to analyze the statistical correlation between the disocclusion obtained during different excursive movements. Results The mean disocclusion obtained by direct technique was 1.72 ± .49 mm in protrusion, 1.19 ± .50 mm for the working side, and 2.54 ± .70 mm for the nonworking side. For the indirect technique, the disocclusion obtained was 1.22 ± .37 mm in protrusion, 8.57 ± .33 mm for the working side, and 1.71 ± .61 mm for the nonworking side. On comparison, there was a statistically significant difference (p<0.05) seen for the values between the groups for direct and indirect subgroups except for the left working subgroup (p>0.05) with higher values in the direct group. Conclusions The disocclusion obtained by the direct technique was higher than that obtained by the indirect technique. For both techniques, as the working side disocclusion increased, the nonworking side disocclusion also increased.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is necessary to analyze and monitor the facial growth of orofacial cleft patients. The documentation should therefore begin before and after primary surgeries. Technological evolution has transformed plaster models into 3D images through scanners that allow rational storage, manipulation, and rotation without the possibility of breakage or damage. Based on this fact, this narrative review aims to provide a feature on the three-dimensional tools available for the assessment of dental arches in children with orofacial cleft and mixed dentition. MATERIAL AND METHODS Three databases were chosen (PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Scopus) and keywords were used to select papers. RESULTS During the database screening, 292 potentially relevant papers were found. After removing duplicates, titles, and abstracts, 32 papers presented qualifications for analysis. Through evaluating each document by reading it one by one, 24 papers fulfilled the eligibility criteria. CONCLUSIONS It was concluded that digital tools-i.e., benchtop scanners which evaluate the dental arches of children with cleft lip, palate, and mixed dentition-are reproducible and reliable, without the use of ionizing radiation, allow storage, manipulation with sustainability, and help preserve the environment.

Abstract
Introduction The current gold standard is a conventional impression made with various impression materials and trays and results in a gypsum cast. With the development of milling and printing materials in dentistry, especially zirconia, a digital model has become increasingly important. Objectives To compare the accuracy of the conventional impression scan (CIS), gypsum cast scan (GCS), and digital impression scan (DIS) to obtain a full-arch digital model. Materials and methods A resin reference cast was fabricated. It was scanned by an extra-oral scanner to measure its accuracy as a reference scanner. Eight conventional impressions of the reference cast were taken by polyvinyl siloxane and scanned. After that, they were poured with type IV dental stones and scanned too. The reference cast was scanned by an intraoral scanner eight separate times. Digital models within each group were superimposed individually to measure precision. In addition, each model from each group was superimposed on one model from the reference scanner precision group to measure trueness. Results The reference scanner showed the highest accuracy among groups with a precision of 1.5±0.8 µm and a trueness of 5.5±1.9 µm (P<0.006), while precision values of gypsum cast were 8.1±1.7 µm and trueness values were 9.3±2.6 µm (P<0.012). Conventional impressions showed a precision of 14.06±2.01 µm and a trueness of 16.15±2.07 µm (P<0.012). Digital impressions were the least accurate among the groups, as precision values were 38.22±15.23 μm and trueness values were 35.19±8.7 μm (P<0.006). Conclusion The gypsum cast scans showed the highest accuracy, followed by the conventional impression scans, and finally the digital impression scans, with no clinical significance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze bite force distribution in subjects with different occlusal characteristics. METHODS This prospective study included 132 candidates (50 males, 82 females) seeking orthodontic treatment, who were divided into four groups based on Angle's classification of malocclusion. T-Scan® III Version 7.0 was used to record their relative distribution of bite forces, which were compared using gender, Angle's occlusal classification, overjet, overbite, space analysis, sagittal, and transverse skeletal relations variables. RESULTS ANOVA revealed significant differences in posterior/anterior bite force ratios between sagittal dental and skeletal relationships, overjet, and overbite groups (p < 0.05). No significant difference was found between different space analysis and transverse relationship groups (p > 0.05) or between genders (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION Subjects with Class III, decreased overjet and decreased overbite displayed higher bite force in posterior teeth compared to other groups. This feature must be considered when evaluating patients with dental and periodontal pathologies that might be affected by excessive tooth stress, especially in subjects with oral parafunctions and bruxism.

Abstract
PURPOSE Reconstructing the occlusal morphology of posterior teeth in definitive dental prosthesis can be challenging. The use of the correlation technique enables replication of the information and occlusal anatomy of interim dental prostheses to the definitive ones. The purpose of this controlled clinical trial was to compare the static and dynamic contacts (SDC) of monolithic zirconia crowns designed with correlation and library techniques. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-four patients were included in the study for a total of 28 molars. For each abutment tooth, an interim crown was fabricated and two digital scans, with and without the interim crown in place were made. Two single crowns were designed using correlation and library techniques. Fifty-six monolithic zirconia crowns were milled. The interim and definitive crowns were evaluated intraorally for SDC by using a 24-μm-thick blue articulating foil. After removing the interim and definite crowns, extraoral photographs were taken to calculate the SDC area using software (ImageJ) and analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis test. RESULTS The average and ± standard deviation (SD) of area of the occlusal marks on interim crowns was 32.27 ± 3.45 mm2 . Definitive crowns designed by using the correlation technique had an area of 31.01 ± 3.73 mm2 ; the area in the library technique was 36.85 ± 5.78 mm2 . No statistically significant difference was found (p = 0.091) between the occlusal mark areas of the interim and definitive crowns designed by using the correlation technique. Whereas, there were significant differences between the areas of occlusal marks of the interim and definitive crowns designed by using the library technique, and between the areas of occlusal marks of definitive crowns designed by using the correlation and library techniques (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION The average area of the SDC of monolithic zirconia crowns designed by using the correlation technique was similar to that of interim crowns. The library technique was less effective when replicating the SDC compared to the correlation technique.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To analyse occlusion time, occlusal balance and lateral occlusal scheme in subjects with various dental and skeletal characteristics. METHODS A total of 132 subjects (50 males and 82 females) seeking orthodontic treatment were included in this prospective study. Using the T-Scan III version 7.0 (Tekscan Inc, South Boston, MA, USA), the occlusion time, occlusal balance and lateral occlusal schemes were recorded and compared with gender, Angle's occlusal classification, overjet, overbite, space analysis, skeletal and transverse relations. ANOVA, t test and contingency tables analyses were performed. Statistical significance was set at P < .05. RESULTS Occlusion time was significantly shorter in subjects with balanced occlusion (0.18 seconds, P < .001), Class I normal occlusion (0.35 seconds, P = .028) and Class I skeletal profile (0.37 seconds, P = .002). Occlusion time was significantly longer in subjects with decreased overjet (0.60 seconds, P = .003). There were significant associations between the distribution of occlusal balance and Angles' classes of occlusion, skeletal relationship, overjet, overbite and space analysis (P < .05). Lateral occlusal schemes were only associated with Angle's classes of occlusion and skeletal relationship (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS Patients with Class I occlusion showed the least occlusion time, the most balanced occlusion and a higher frequency of canine guidance. Nonetheless, potentially balanced occlusion and group function were highly prevalent in all groups; therefore, ideal occlusion must be considered an ideal to inspire and aim for, but cannot be considered an essential requirement of every dental treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE In the definition of an occlusal scheme, clinicians should choose between conventional and computerised methods based on a careful appraise of the advantages and limitations. This study aims to assess the correlation between the two approaches in a clinical setting. METHODS Twenty-four patients were included to compare different methods of occlusal contacts assessment on the posterior surfaces of flat mandibular appliances. In supine position, they were asked to clench with maximum strength, in the maximum intercuspation position with a 24 μm articulating paper positioned between the teeth and the appliance surface. An extra-oral photograph of the marks was taken (total N = 2082). They were visually classified based on a pre-defined scale (ie, conventional assessment) and with ImageJ analysis software (ie, photographic software assessment). Additionally, a computerised occlusal analysis was performed (ie, computerised assessment). Correlation analysis of the data achieved with conventional, photographic and computerised assessments was performed. RESULTS Correlation between conventional and computerised assessments was weak (r = .265), whilst it was moderate between conventional and photographic assessments (r = .633), as well as between photographic and computerised assessments (r = .476). CONCLUSIONS This investigation showed a weak-to-moderate correlation between different methods (ie, conventional, photographic and computerised) to assess occlusal marks. None of the three can actually be considered the standard of reference, but based on their specific features, it can bet suggested that the conventional method may be enough for most clinical purposes, unless otherwise proven.
