Abstract
BACKGROUND Various medical conditions and the drugs used to treat them have been shown to impede or complicate dental implant surgery. It is crucial to carefully monitor the medical status and potential post-operative complications of patients with systemic diseases, particularly elderly patients, to minimize the risk of health complications that may arise. AIM The purpose of this study was to review the existing evidence on the viability of dental implants in patients with systemic diseases and to provide practical recommendations to achieve the best possible results in the corresponding patient population. METHODS The information for our study was compiled using data from PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases and searched separately for each systemic disease included in our work until October 2023. An additional manual search was also performed to increase the search sensitivity. Only English-language publications were included and assessed according to titles, abstracts and full texts. RESULTS In total, 6784 studies were found. After checking for duplicates and full-text availability, screening for the inclusion criteria and manually searching reference lists, 570 articles remained to be considered in this study. CONCLUSION In treating patients with systemic conditions, the cost-benefit analysis should consider the patient's quality of life and expected lifespan. The success of dental implants depends heavily on ensuring appropriate maintenance therapy, ideal oral hygiene standards, no smoking and avoiding other risk factors. Indications and contraindications for dental implants in cases of systemic diseases are yet to be more understood; broader and hardcore research needs to be done for a guideline foundation.

Abstract
The early detection of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) poses significant challenges, especially if it mimics a benign condition. This report presents a case of a 79-year-old nonsmoker Saudi male patient with an alveolar lesion that initially resembled an implant-induced reaction but upon biopsy revealed dysplastic squamous epithelium indicative of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). This case highlights that lesion mimicry, the absence of pain, and low cancer awareness can cause diagnostic delays. Treatment options for OSCC include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, with surgery being the primary treatment modality. This case emphasizes the need for heightened vigilance among healthcare providers, regular follow-ups, and enhanced cancer awareness to promote early detection and intervention. Recognizing the diverse clinical presentations of OSCC remains essential for effective management and improved patient outcomes, despite the complexities of its etiology and diagnostic challenges.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To perform a retrospective, descriptive, histopathological study of peri-implant tissue pathologies associated with titanium dental implants (TDI), and to evaluate the presence of metallic particles in samples from a single diagnostic center. METHODS Sixty-eight cases of TDI-associated lesions were retrieved from the Surgical Pathology Laboratory archives, School of Dentistry, University of Buenos Aires (UBA) (1990-2018). The study included re-examining the histopathological features of the biopsy samples, analyzing the inflammatory infiltrate, and examining the samples to detect metallic particles whose chemical composition was determined spectrophotometrically (EDS). Available clinical and radiographic data were also reviewed. RESULTS The retrieved cases ranged from lesions of inflammatory origin to neoplastic lesions. Metallic particles were observed in 36 cases (52.9%), all of which showed inflammation. Particle length ranged from 2 to 85µm. EDS analysis of the particles/deposits observed in the tissues showed the presence of aluminum, titanium, iron, and nickel, among other elements. CONCLUSIONS A significant number of TDI-associated lesions, including cases not reported to date and diagnosed at a single diagnostic center, are shown here. Cases showing particles exhibited an inflammatory response, irrespective of the histopathological diagnosis. The role of metallic particles in the development of TDI-associated lesion is yet to be established.

Abstract
Introduction: The massive diffusion of dental implant treatments in the last decades leads to the appearance of complications, most of them inflammatory, although important complications have been described as malignant lesions in the vicinity of dental implants. The objective of this article is to describe the cases described in the literature of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) or clinical variants and metastases, in the vicinity of dental implants and to analyze the possible etiological agents involved. Material and methods: The criteria used were those described in the PRISMA® Declaration for performing systematic reviews. An electronic search was performed on MEDLINE (via PubMed) using the terms MeSH: “dental implants” AND “squamous cell carcinoma” OR “dental implant complications” AND “squamous cell carcinoma”. Results: Thirty-eight articles describing a total of 76 cases of OSCC or clinical variants, as well as metastasis in the vicinity of dental implants, were included. Conclusions: It is not possible to establish a cause-effect relationship between dental implants and the development of OSCC. Its clinical appearance can be confused with periimplantitis, so that, in cases of sudden onset, which do not respond to conventional treatment and/or have associated alterations in sensitivity, a biopsy should be performed.

Abstract
Background: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic disease without any definitive treatment. Local corticosteroids are often prescribed, but their efficacy has been questioned by many studies. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of nano-based triamcinolone acetonide gel (NT) and compare it with conventional triamcinolone gel (CT) on OLP. Materials and Methods: In this triple-blind randomized clinical trial study, 40 patients with Erosive OLP were divided into two groups receiving (CT) and (NT). The patients were requested to apply them four times a day for 2 weeks. The severity of pain was evaluated through visual analog scale, the size of lesions was measured with paper lace, and the appearance of lesions was examined adopting Thongprasom scale . Findings will be significant via independent t-test or Chi-square test with P < 0.05. Results: The severity of pain in NT group was 4.9 ± 0.7 cm before the treatment and 1.5 ± 0.9 after that, whereas in CT group, it was 4.9 ± 0.8 and 1.8 ± 0.9, respectively . The mean size of the lesions in NT group was 2.1 ± 1.1 cm before the treatment and 0.8 ± 1.1 afterward, whereas in CT group, was 2.2 ± 1.1 and 1.3 ± 1.1, respectively. The OLP appearance before and after the study in NT group was 4.5 ± 0.5 and 0.8 ± 0.6, respectively, whereas in CT group was 4.6 ± 0.5 and 0.9 ± 0.7 (P = 0.3). Among these variables, only Thongprasom scale on the 6th and 14th days had a significant reduction in NT group in comparison with CT group. Conclusion: NT has a better impact on OLP in comparison with CT, but this difference is not statistically significant.

Abstract
This retrospective study aims to investigate the proportion and characteristics of patients who perceive dental treatment (DT) as a cause of oral mucosal lesions (OMLs). A total of 2,302 patients with OMLs visited the Oral Medicine Department of Pusan National University Dental Hospital. The patients were divided into a study group (280 patients who perceived DT as a cause of OMLs) and a control group (300 randomly selected patients). Percentages of DT types, clinical characteristics, and the frequencies of diagnoses and chief complaint (CC) sites were analyzed in both groups. Among the patients with OMLs, 12.2% attributed OMLs to DT. Among the diagnoses, allergic reaction (AR) and traumatic ulcer/irritation (TU) were significantly more frequent in the study group. The DT types most frequently perceived as the cause of OMLs were implants. According to patients, TU and candida occurred most frequently following denture placement (68-79%), whereas oral lichen planus and AR occurred most commonly following implant treatment (52-53%). The gingiva was significantly more frequent as the CC site in the study group than in the control group (P < 0.05 for all outcomes). It is important to inform patients of the potential complications of DT and the importance of regular check-ups.
