Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of concentrated growth factor (CGF) membrane and collagen as barrier materials in sealing the alveolar socket in alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) in the posterior region during a one-year follow-up. METHODS A total of 24 patients who underwent ARP in the posterior region were selected for inclusion and randomly assigned to the CGF group (12 cases) and Collagen group (12 cases). The patients in both groups underwent extraction of posterior teeth. The extraction sockets were filled with a bone substitute to the level of the pre-extraction buccal and lingual or palatal alveolar bone plates. The wounds in the CGF group were closed with a fabricated CGF overlaying the upper edge of the bone substitute material, whereas those in the Collagen group were closed with Bio-Oss Collagen. The implants were placed after 6 months. The evaluation was based on implant retention, re-grafting rate, and vertical and horizontal alveolar ridge bone volume changes measured by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Data were statistically analyzed using SPSS 28.0 software. RESULTS No patient withdrew throughout the follow-up period. No implant failure and no severe peri-implant or mucosal soft tissue complications were observed. Six months after the operation, the degree of vertical alveolar ridge height resorption in the CGF group was lower than that in the Collagen group (P<0.05). There were no statistically difference between the groups at 1 year after the operation (P>0.05). The amount of bone reduction in horizontal alveolar ridge width showed no difference between the groups at 6 months and 1 year after surgery (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS CGF membrane and Bio-Oss Collagen as barrier materials for posterior ARP inhibited reduction in alveolar ridge bone mass.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES After tooth extraction, marked resorption occurs in extraction socket walls, leading to functional and esthetic problems in that area. One of the methods introduced to reduce this resorption is the use of platelet derivatives. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of leukocyte and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) on the changes following tooth extraction. MATERIALS AND METHODS The participants were 24 patients who needed to replace at least one single-rooted tooth with an implant. They were randomly divided into test and control groups. After the tooth extraction, the sockets in the test group received LPRF clots, while in the control group, the sockets were left free of any interventions. CBCT scans were obtained from the extraction site both immediately after the tooth extraction and 8 weeks later. The histologic biopsy was also obtained while the implant site was being prepared 8 weeks after the extraction. RESULTS The average vertical bone loss in the buccal crest was not significantly different between the two groups (1.67 ± 1.67 in the test group and 2.3 ± 1.36 in the control group; mean difference = - 0.36, 95% CI: - 1.65-0.93, p-value = 0.57). Nor was the difference in resorption of the palatal wall (mean difference = - 0.19, 95% CI: - 1.51.12, p-value = 0.76). The mean ridge width resorption in 25% of the coronal aspect of sockets was also measured in the test (1.30 ± 0.66) and control group (0.58 ± 0.95) (mean difference = 0.73, 95% CI: 0.03-1.42, p-value = 0.04). The new bone formation in histologic view was not statistically different between groups (p-value = 0.15). CONCLUSION The LPRF neither reduces the rate of ridge resorption in vertical or horizontal dimensions of extraction sockets nor induces more new bone formation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This study helps dentists choose the appropriate material for ridge preservation.

Abstract
This report describes the use of Self Inflating Tissue Expanders (SITEs) to rehabilitate severely atrophic edentulous mandibular ridges, enabling successful bone grafting and implant placement. The treatment resulted in stable and complication-free implants over a seven-year follow-up, demonstrating SITEs' effectiveness in providing sufficient bone volume and soft tissue coverage for dental implants.

Abstract
Calcium sulphate (plaster of Paris) has been used since 1892 to fill bone defects and as a good bone graft substitute. Calcium sulphate is an osteoconductive, inorganic substance. Following 75 years, many other authors reported variable and a better result in grafting of bone defects and in several cases of immediate and delayed dental implants for good osseointegrations, with no complications attributed to the calcium sulphate. Early results were variable, because of its conflicting crystalline structure, purity, and quality of the calcium sulphate. Apart from this, calcium sulphate also shows predictable resorption rate in vivo, presence of minimal trace elements and extremely uniform crystalline structure. Calcium sulphate is a bio-inert material and get resorbed over a period of weeks and fibrovascular tissue takes its place which eventually allows neovascularization and bone formation within the area. Use During the conventional surgical treatment addition of calcium sulphate as a bone graft of in case of placement of dental implants and pathological bony defects it improves the clinical outcome. Calcium sulphate also act as a barrier and filling material for the treatment of "through and through" bony lesions. Use of calcium sulphate as a bone graft substitute avoids the complications and morbidity associated with autograft like infection, second surgery.

Abstract
The objective of the study was to evaluate the long-term esthetic and radiographic results of implants placed in the anterior maxilla after ridge preservation, combining bovine xenograft with collagen matrix. Fifteen patients who required a single tooth extraction because of fracture, root resorption, or extended caries were included in the study. After extraction, all sites were grafted using Deproteinized Bovine Bone Mineral (DBBM) with collagen and covered by a resorbable collagen matrix (CM). Five months after socket grafting, implants were successfully installed. The implant diameter range was between 3.8 and 4.2 mm. All patients were monitored for over 7 years, both clinically and radiographically. Three independent observers evaluated the long-term esthetic outcome, employing the Pink Esthetic Score (PES) technique. Over a period exceeding seven years, a 100% survival rate was observed for all 15 implants, with minimal marginal bone loss. The mean PES was 11.40 (±1.44) at the first assessment and 11.38 (±1.63) at the second assessment. The difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.978), and the scores of PES measurements indicated excellent esthetic results even after seven years. Based on these preliminary results, it seems that placing collagen bovine bone in a fresh extraction socket, covered with a collagen matrix, can preserve the alveolar ridge and provide long-term stable esthetic results.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the efficacy of alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) in periodontally compromised molar extraction sites. METHODS An electronic search was performed on 10th November 2023 across five databases, seeking randomised/non-randomised controlled trials (RCTs/NCTs) that included a minimum follow-up duration of four months. The RoB2 and Robins-I tools assessed the risk of bias for the included studies. Data on alveolar ridge dimensional and volumetric changes, keratinized mucosal width, and need for additional bone augmentation for implant placement were collected. Subsequently, a meta-analysis was carried out to derive the pooled estimates. RESULTS Six studies were incorporated in the present review, and a total of 135 molar extraction sockets in 130 subjects were included in the meta-analysis. ARP was undertaken in 68 sites, and 67 sites healed spontaneously. The follow-up time ranged from 4 to 6 months. The meta-analysis of both RCTs and NCTs showed significant differences in mid-buccal ridge width changes at 1 mm level below ridge crest with a mean difference (MD) of 3.80 (95% CI: 1.67-5.94), mid-buccal ridge height changes (MD: 2.18; 95% CI: 1.25-3.12) and volumetric changes (MD: 263.59; 95% CI: 138.44-388.74) in favour of ARP, while the certainty of evidence is graded low to very low. Moreover, ARP appeared to reduce the need for additional sinus and bone augmentation procedures at implant placement with low certainty of evidence. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of this study, alveolar ridge preservation in periodontally compromised extraction sites may, to some extent, preserve the ridge vertically and horizontally with reference to spontaneous healing. However, it could not eliminate the need for additional augmentation for implant placement. Further, longitudinal studies with large sample sizes and refined protocols are needed.

Abstract
Exodontia is a painful treatment that frequently causes the alveolar bone and surrounding soft tissues to be immediately destroyed and lost. With regard to the amount of resorption taking place after extraction, various treatment protocols aimed at preventing or decreasing alveolar ridge collapse have been presented over the past three decades. Ridge preservation is a clinical technique used to prevent the socket walls' bone resorption after tooth extraction. A 43‑year‑old female patient with a non-significant medical history visited the Department of Periodontology and Implantology with a chief complaint of a decayed tooth in the upper left back region (26) for three years and wants to get it replaced. The treatment option that was given to the patient was atraumatic extraction, followed by ridge preservation. A cautious and conservative treatment strategy is necessary to preserve the oral structures as they currently exist and are intact for a successful outcome; careful case selection and thorough treatment planning are crucial. Atraumatic tooth extraction is a procedure used to delicately remove a tooth while upholding the fundamental principles of preserving the surrounding bone and gingival structure. This will ultimately maximize the success of implant placement in terms of appearance and functionality.

Abstract
The concept of extraction socket healing has been severally researched and reported over the years, since tooth extraction remains one of the most common procedures performed in the dental clinic. Understanding this healing process is of utmost importance because the outcome has a direct bearing on future prosthetic rehabilitation and, by extension, on patients' esthetics and masticatory function, among others. This mini review, therefore, summarized the current knowledge on the different stages of socket healing, including the biologic and clinical events that occur following tooth extraction up until the complete closure of the socket. Additionally, the modeling of the alveolar bone/process post extraction, and the resultant dimensional changes that, altogether, shape the bone, were reviewed and documented. The effects of various socket preservation interventions to mitigate these dimensional changes, and therefore preserve the alveolar process in a condition suitable for future prosthetic rehabilitation, were highlighted. Finally, a review of some of the factors that influence the entire process was also carried out.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A patient had lost the first left maxillary incisor in the esthetic zone. METHODS The defect in the alveolar ridge was reconstructed for an implant-supported restoration using a new xenogeneic bone substitute containing hyaluronate, which was used in combination with allogeneic bone granules. RESULTS After three years of follow-up, the dental implant was stable and showed no signs of infection. CONCLUSIONS This is the first case report with a long-term follow-up time of three years of a successful clinical application of a xenograft-allograft combination (cerabone® plus combined with maxgraft®) for alveolar ridge augmentation before dental implantation. Cerabone® plus offers volume stability, provides reliable and efficient structural support of the oral soft tissues in the augmented region (particularly crucial in the aesthetic zone), and preserves the alveolar ridge shape.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate clinically and radiographically at 4 months post-operatively the outcomes of mixing demineralized bovine bone material (DBBM) with cross-linked hyaluronic acid in alveolar ridge preservation. MATERIAL AND METHODS Seven patients presenting bilateral hopeless teeth (14 teeth) were enrolled in the study, the test site contained demineralized bovine bone material (DBBM) mixed with cross-linked hyaluronic acid (xHyA) while the control site contained only DBBM. 4 months post-operatively prior to implant placement a Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan was recorded and compared to the initial scan to assess the volumetric and linear bone resorption that occurred in both sites. Clinically, sites that needed further bone grafting at the implant placement stage were recorded. Differences in volumetric and linear bone resorption between both groups were assessed using Wilcoxon signed rank test. McNemar test was also used to evaluate difference in bone grafting need between both groups. RESULTS All sites healed uneventfully, volumetric and linear resorption differences between the baseline and 4 months post-operatively were obtained for each site. The mean volumetric and linear bone resorption were respectively 36.56 ± 1.69%, 1.42 ± 0.16 mm in the controls sites and 26.96 ± 1.83%; 0.73 ± 0.052 mm in the tests sites. The values were significantly higher among controls sites (P=0.018). No significant differences were observed in the need for bone grafting between both groups. CONCLUSION Cross-linked hyaluronic acid (xHyA) appears to limit the post-extractional alveolar bone resorption when mixed with DBBM.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the present randomized controlled trial (RCT) was to evaluate the efficacy of different alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) techniques on dimensional alterations after tooth extraction, based on clinical measurements. BACKGROUND Alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) is a common procedure in every day clinical practice, when dental implants are involved in treatment planning. In ARP procedures, a bone grafting material is combined with a socket sealing (SS) material in order to compensate the alveolar ridge dimensional alterations after tooth extraction. Xenograft and allograft are the most frequently used bone grafts in ARP, while free gingival graft (FGG), collagen membrane, and collagen sponge (CS) usually applied as SS materials. The evidence comparing xenograft and allograft directly in ARP procedure is scarce. In addition, FGG is usually combined with xenograft as SS material, while the evidence combing allograft with FGG is absent. Moreover, CS could probably be an alternative choice in ARP as SS material, since it has been used in previous studies but more clinical trials are required to evaluate its effectiveness. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-one patients were randomly assigned in four treatment groups: (A) freeze-dried bone allograft (FDBA) covered with collagen sponge (CS), (B) FDBA covered with free gingival graft (FGG), (C) demineralized bovine bone mineral xenograft (DBBM) covered with FGG, and (D) FGG alone. Clinical measurements were performed immediately after tooth extraction and 4 months later. The related outcomes pertained to both vertical and horizontal assessment of bone loss. RESULTS Overall, groups A, B, and C presented significantly less vertical and horizontal bone resorption compared to group D. No statistically significant difference was observed between allograft and xenograft, except for the vertical bone resorption at the buccal central site, where xenograft showed marginally statistically significantly reduced bone loss compared to allograft (group C vs group B: adjusted β coef: 1.07 mm; 95%CI: 0.01, 2.10; p = 0.05). No significant differences were observed in hard tissue dimensions when CS and FGG were applied over FDBA. CONCLUSIONS No differences between FDBA and DBBM could practically be confirmed. In addition, CS and FGG were equally effective socket sealing materials when combined with FDBA, regarding bone resorption. More RCTs are needed to compare the histological differences between FDBA and DBBM and the effect of CS and FGG on soft tissue dimensional changes. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Xenograft and allograft were equally efficient in ARP 4 months after tooth extraction in horizontal level. Xenograft maintained the mid-buccal site of the socket marginally better than the allograft, in vertical level. FGG and CS were equally efficient as SS materials regarding the hard tissue dimensional alterations. TRIAL REGISTRATION Clinical trial registration Number: NCT04934813 (clinicaltrials.gov).

Abstract
Alveolar ridge preservation is routinely indicated in clinical practice with the purpose of attenuating postextraction ridge atrophy. Over the past two decades numerous clinical studies and reviews on this topic have populated the literature. In recent years the focus has primarily been on analyzing efficacy outcomes pertaining to postextraction dimensional changes, whereas other relevant facets of alveolar ridge preservation therapy have remained unexplored. With this premise, we carried out a comprehensive evidence-based assessment of the complications associated with different modalities of alveolar ridge preservation and modeled the cost-effectiveness of different therapeutic modalities as a function of changes in ridge width and height. We conclude that, among allogeneic and xenogeneic bone graft materials, increased expenditure does not translate into increased effectiveness of alveolar ridge preservation therapy. On the other hand, a significant association between expenditure on a barrier membrane and reduced horizontal and vertical ridge resorption was observed, though only to a certain degree, beyond which the return on investment was significantly diminished.

Abstract
The loss of thickness and height of the alveolar process after tooth extraction is a significant impediment to implant placement, which limits the aesthetic results of many restorative treatments. Alveolar ridge preservation can reduce bone resorption. Knowing how beneficial this procedure is can help clinicians decide if it is worth doing. The purpose of this article is to present a contemporary review of the different approaches to preserving the dimensions of the alveolar ridge. We analyze the alveolar healing process, atraumatic extraction techniques, graft materials, and controversies.

Abstract
Background: The technique of socket preservation after tooth extraction allows for less volumetric decrease after tooth extraction. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate differences between alveolar socket preservation performed with deproteinized bovine bone graft and autologous particulate bone graft taken from the mandibular ramus. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study enrolled a total of 21 consecutive patients. A total of 11 patients underwent socket preservation with deproteinized bovine bone graft and collagen matrix (group A), and 10 patients underwent socket preservation performed with particulate autologous bone taken from the mandibular ramus and collagen matrix (group B). All patients received cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) before socket preservation and after four months. Alveolar bone width (ABW) values and alveolar bone height (ABH) values were measured at the first and second CBCT, and the reduction of the values in the two groups was compared. Statistical analysis was performed using Student’s t-test for independent variables, and p values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between ABW reduction of group A and ABW reduction of group B (t-test value p = 0.28). There were no statistically significant differences between ABH reduction of group A and ABH reduction of group B (t-test value p = 0.10). Conclusions: In this retrospective study, no statistical differences were found between the group that received autologous particulate bone compared to the group that received deproteinized bovine bone in socket preservation.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a chronic infectious disease worldwide that can cause damage to periodontal supporting tissues including gingiva, bone, cementum and periodontal ligament (PDL). The principle for the treatment of periodontitis is to control the inflammatory process. Achieving structural and functional regeneration of periodontal tissues is also essential and remains a major challenge. Though many technologies, products, and ingredients were applied in periodontal regeneration, most of the strategies have limited outcomes. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are membranous particles with a lipid structure secreted by cells, containing a large number of biomolecules for the communication between cells. Numerous studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of stem cell-derived EVs (SCEVs) and immune cell-derived EVs (ICEVs) on periodontal regeneration, which may be an alternative strategy for cell-based periodontal regeneration. The production of EVs is highly conserved among humans, bacteria and plants. In addition to eukaryocyte-derived EVs (CEVs), a growing body of literature suggests that bacterial/plant-derived EVs (BEVs/PEVs) also play an important role in periodontal homeostasis and regeneration. The purpose of this review is to introduce and summarize the potential therapeutic values of BEVs, CEVs and PEVs in periodontal regeneration, and discuss the current challenges and prospects for EV-based periodontal regeneration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the effects of bone grafting materials, collagen-infused grafting materials, and no grafting materials on the soft and hard tissue outcomes when an immediate implant is placed. MATERIALS AND METHODS In addition to hand searching, electronic searches were performed in Pubmed, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL). Only RCTs were included in our review. The Cochrane ROB 2.0 tool was used to assess the risk of bias (ROB). Two subgroups were used to evaluate implant failure rate, buccal bone resorption, soft tissue thickness, and esthetic scores. In the meta-analysis, both the fixed-effects model and the random-effects model were employed. RESULT 7 RCTs were selected after screening 580 studies, and 205 patients were included in the review, with 279 implants. Two RCTs were at low bias of risk, three were at moderate bias, and two were deemed at high risk of bias. The failure rate (95% CI: 0.17 to 11.84) and soft tissue thickness were not significantly different between collagen with bone grafting materials and without bone grafting materials. On the basis of the failure rate and buccal bone thickness, there was no significant difference between collagen with bone grafting materials and bone grafting materials. While we found collagen with bone grafting materials could have a significant advantage on the buccal bone thickness (MD: -0.43,95% CI -0.72 to -0.41) and esthetic outcome (MD: -1.23,95% CI -1.90 to -0.55). CONCLUSION In the statement of immediate implant implantation, the thickness of the buccal bone and esthetic outcomes did significantly benefit from bone grafting materials with collagen inserted in the "jumping gap".

Abstract
Introduction: Achieving a successful reconstruction of alveolar bone morphology still remains a challenge because of the irregularity and complex microenvironment of tooth sockets. Biological materials including hydroxyapatite and collagen, are used for alveolar ridge preservation. However, the healing effect is often unsatisfactory. Methods: Inspired by superwetting biomimetic materials, we constructed a 3D actively-spreading bone repair material. It consisted of photocurable polyether F127 diacrylate hydrogel loaded with mixed spheroids of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and vascular endothelial cells (ECs). Results: Biologically, cells in the spheroids were able to spread and migrate outwards, and possessed both osteogenic and angiogenic potential. Meanwhile, ECs also enhanced osteogenic differentiation of MSCs. Mechanically, the excellent physical properties of F127DA hydrogel ensured that it was able to be injected directly into the tooth socket and stabilized after light curing. In vivo experiments showed that MSC-EC-F127DA system promoted bone repair and preserved the shape of alveolar ridge within a short time duration. Discussion: In conclusion, the novel photocurable injectable MSC-EC-F127DA hydrogel system was able to achieve three-dimensional tissue infiltration, and exhibited much therapeutic potential for complex oral bone defects in the future.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of concentrated growth factor (CGF) membrane for the sealing of alveolar socket in alveolar ridge preservation (ARP). A total of 22 patients with 24 alveolar sockets were recruited and divided randomly into CGF group and Bio-Gide collagen membrane group. The soft tissue wound healing rate was calculated using intraoral scanner at 3, 7, and 14 days after ARP, and the bone resorption volume at 1, 3, and 5 mm below the alveolar ridge was measured by CBCT at 6 months postoperation. The keratinized gingival width was also measured before and 6 months after ridge preservation. In terms of soft tissue healing rate, the CGF group exhibited significant higher than that of Bio-Gide group at both 7 and 14 days after surgery (P < 0.05). However, there was no significantly different in bone resorption rate and the width of keratinized gingival after 6 months (P > 0.05). Therefore, the use of CGFs membranes for wound closure in ARP is a reliable method, but more clinical data are needed to prove it.

Abstract
After tooth extraction, dimensional changes affect the alveolar socket, leading to loss in alveolar bone height and width. Histological modifications also occur, with initial formation of a blood clot that is replaced with granulation tissue and subsequently with a provisional connective tissue matrix. Spontaneous healing ends with socket filling with woven bone, which is gradually replaced with lamellar bone and bone marrow. Adequate alveolar ridge dimensions and bone quality are required to assure optimal stability and osseointegration following dental implant placement. When a tooth is extracted, alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) procedures are an effective method to prevent collapse of the post-extraction socket. Heterologous bone is widely chosen by clinicians for ARP, and anorganic bone xenografts (ABXs) made bioinert by heat treatment represents the most used biomaterial in clinical applications. Collagen-preserving bone xenografts (CBXs) made of porcine or equine bone are fabricated by less invasive chemical or enzymatic treatments to remove xenogenic antigens, and these are also effective in preserving post-extraction sites. Clinical differences between anorganic bone substitutes and collagen-preserving materials are not well documented in the literature but understanding these differences could clarify how processing protocols influence biomaterial behavior in situ. This systematic review of the literature compares the dimensional changes and histological features of ABXs versus CBXs in ridge preservation procedures to promote awareness of different bone xenograft efficacies in stimulating the healing of post-extraction sockets.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to longitudinally evaluate changes in alveolar bone crest (ABC) levels and differences in resorption rates (RR) between the tested grafting materials following alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) after tooth extraction after 1, 2, and 3 years (T1-T8) of clinical function. METHODS Patients were randomly assigned to two different bone allografts (group 1 maxgraft®, group 2 Puros®) for ARP. Non-restorable teeth were minimal traumatically extracted. Sockets were augmented with the tested materials and covered with a pericardium membrane. After 4 months of healing, 36 implants were placed and sites were clinically and radiographically monitored in the mesial (ABC-M), the distal (ABC-D, T1-T8), the bucco-lingual (ABC-BL), buccal (ABC-B) and oral (ABC-O) aspect (T1-T4). RESULTS Changes in (ABC-M), (ABC-D), (ABC-BL), (ABC-B), and (ABC-O) levels showed statistically highly significant differences between T1 and T2 for both bone allografts (p < 0.001). Changes at the ABC-M and ABC-BL levels between T2 and T3 of group 1 showed a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001). Both groups achieved and maintained increased ABC levels without statistically significant differences throughout the monitoring periods of 1-3 years (T6-T8) of clinical function. No failures or adverse events were observed. CONCLUSIONS To the best of our knowledge, this study is within its limitations the first study to directly compare ABC-changes and differences in RR of two different allogeneic grafting materials for a period of 3 years after ARP. It was demonstrated to be, despite significant differences in RR, a successful method of preserving increased ABC levels through 1, 2, and 3 years of clinical function. Abstract
Background: Alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) can successfully reduce volumetric ridge changes. However, there is still no consensus on what technique is the most advantageous for each specific clinical scenario. Hence, the aim of the present paper was to provide a treatment decision tree to guide the choice of predictable ARP procedures based on extraction socket buccal bone morphology and integrity. Material and Methods: Three socket types (ST) are proposed and discussed based on buccal bone morphology (intact, dehiscence or fenestration). Results: A decision tree for ARP was developed in order to merge ST classification with suitable treatment modalities. In the decision tree, the issue of when to allow unassisted healing or ARP was discussed. Described methods included bone grafting and collagen plug, and absorbable membrane or non-resorbable membrane, with or without flap elevation. Conclusion: A decision tree for ARP procedures was provided to guide clinicians towards the most conservative and predictable treatment approach based on remaining socket anatomical structures after extraction.

Abstract
Introduction Several techniques and methods have been proposed to cover alveolar bone after tooth extraction when soft tissue is lacking. Some authors recommend soft tissue flap techniques, and others advocate different types of materials for socket covering. In this article, the authors use a modified buccal inversion technique for adequate coverage of the alveolar ridge to ensure its preservation and to minimize soft tissue shrinkage and loss of keratinized gingiva after tooth extraction. This local mucogingival-periosteal plastic procedure was named by the authors the “Buccal Periosteal Inversion technique” or simply BUPI. Materials and Methods After extraction of a fractured, endodontically compromised lower right first molar, the BUPI technique was performed to cover the alveolus. After reflecting the two-sided full-thickness flap, the periosteum was split in the cranial direction. The inverted periosteum is used to provide tension-free defect closure of the postextractional defect. Detailed technique implementation and patient postoperative healing are presented here in detail. Results Postoperative evaluation at six weeks was presented with photos showing adequate surgical site healing, no signs of infection or dehiscence, and no crestal shift of the keratinized gingiva. Conclusion The buccal periosteal inversion (BUPI) technique is a modified technique that allows full socket coverage, avoiding a keratinized gingiva shift in the crestal direction using only the periosteum as a cover material. By inverting the buccal ridge periosteum alone from its normal position, the osteoclastic effect on the buccal bony wall will be eliminated, and this procedure abolishes the need for additional alveolar coverage materials.

Abstract
The aim of this overview was to assess the methodological quality of systematic reviews of randomized clinical trials on alveolar ridge preservation after a tooth extraction. During March 2020, two independent reviewers performed an electronic search of the PubMed (MEDLINE), Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases to identify all relevant systematic reviews including randomized clinical trials on alveolar ridge preservation. A manual search of articles in renowned journals was also conducted. The methodological quality of the included reviews was determined using the AMSTAR-2 tool. From the 53 initially retrieved studies, 11 were finally included: three systematic reviews and eight systematic reviews with meta-analyses. The methodological quality of the included reviews was low or critically low. Higher quality clinical studies should be conducted prior to performing further reviews and these should meet the methodological requirements that are fundamental to this type of research.

Abstract
The aim of the present study is to assess the clinical and histological healing of a post-extractive alveolus following the procedure for socket preservation, in a patient receiving oral bisphosphonates for more than 6 years. After the extraction, enzymatically-deantigenated horse bone granules and an equine pericardium membrane were used to preserve the tooth socket. The patient was placed on a monthly follow-up in order to monitor the healing process. A 3 mm trephine bur was used to drill the bone for implant site preparation and to collect the bone sample. No signs and symptoms related to osteonecrosis of the jaws were reported. Histological data showed that, after 5 months, the mean percentages of trabecular bone, bone marrow and residual bone graft were respectively 45.74 ± 0.09%, 48.09 ± 0.08%, and 6.16 ± 0.01%. The residual graft material appeared to be osteointegrated and none of the particles appeared to be encapsulated. The present case report supports the guidelines that assume that patients undergoing oral bisphosphonate therapy can be eligible for surgical therapy. More clinical studies with larger sample sizes are needed to support this clinical evidence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to evaluate the dimensional changes in alveolar bone and soft tissue after dental extraction/postextraction in alveoli filled/grafted with collagen (Collacone) compared with those left empty/ungrafted. STUDY DESIGN Twenty-three patients with a single maxillary incisor to be extracted were included in the study. The patients were randomized into either the treatment group, receiving a collagen sponge, or into the control group with an empty alveolus. All participants were examined and followed with cone beam computed tomography and 3-dimensional soft tissue scanning procedures during the healing process. The outcomes were statistically evaluated with Mann-Whitney U tests. RESULTS Seventeen patients were available for follow-up. The radiographic outcome showed an average loss of bone in the bucco-palatal width of 1.15 mm (range, 0.2-2.2) in the test group and 0.57 mm (range, 0-1.6) among the controls. There was no significant difference between the 2 groups (P = .092). The soft tissue topography height measurements revealed an average decrease of 1.737 mm (range, 0.118-2.872) in the test group and 1.899 mm (range, 0.454-3.014) in the control group. The difference was not significant (P = .847). CONCLUSION The use of a Collacone collagen sponge does not enhance the bone and soft tissue healing outcome after extraction of an incisor in the maxilla compared with leaving the alveolus empty.

Abstract
When a tooth is extracted, a bone remodeling of the alveolar process occurs irretrievably. Various techniques have emerged over time to maintain the thickness of the bone crest in fixed prosthetics on teeth and implants. The socket shield and pontic shield techniques are aimed at minimizing buccal bone remodeling, especially in the aesthetic area. We present a case of an aesthetic sector rehabilitated with partial fixed denture using the socket shield and pontic shield techniques.

Abstract
AIM To analyse the evidence pertaining to post-extraction dimensional changes in the alveolar ridge after unassisted socket healing. MATERIALS AND METHODS The protocol of this PRISMA-compliant systematic review (SRs) was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42020178857). A literature search to identify studies that fulfilled the eligibility criteria was conducted. Data of interest were extracted. Qualitative and random-effects meta-analyses were performed if at least two studies with comparable features and variables reported the same outcome of interest. RESULTS Twenty-eight articles were selected, of which 20 could be utilized for the conduction of quantitative analyses by method of assessment (i.e. clinical vs radiographic measurements) and location (i.e. non-molar vs molar sites). Pooled estimates revealed that mean horizontal, vertical mid-facial and mid-lingual ridge reduction assessed clinically in non-molar sites was 2.73 mm (95% CI: 2.36-3.11), 1.71 mm (95% CI: 1.30-2.12) and 1.44 mm (95% CI: 0.78-2.10), respectively. Mean horizontal, vertical mid-facial and mid-lingual ridge reduction assessed radiographically in non-molar sites was 2.54 mm (95% CI: 1.97-3.11), 1.65 mm (95% CI: 0.42-2.88) and 0.87 mm (95% CI: 0.36-1.38), respectively. Mean horizontal, vertical mid-facial and mid-lingual ridge reduction assessed radiographically in molar sites was 3.61 mm (95% CI: 3.24-3.98), 1.46 mm (95% CI: 0.73-2.20) and 1.20 mm (95% CI: 0.56-1.83), respectively. CONCLUSION A variable amount of alveolar bone resorption occurs after unassisted socket healing depending on tooth type.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinical data on the restorative designs affecting the early progression of peri-implantitis are scarce. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the influence of several restorative factors (e.g., restoration emergence angle, and internal screw length/diameter) on the marginal bone loss around implants with peri-implantitis. METHODS Implants diagnosed with peri-implantitis having 1- (T1) and 2-year (T2) follow-ups were included. In addition, within 6 months pre-diagnosis (Tb), all cases required to have full documentation in which no evidence of peri-implantitis was not indicated. Changes in marginal bone levels (MBLs) from Tb to T1 and from T1 to T2 were evaluated. The effect of several variables on MBLs changes was assessed via univariate and multivariate generalized estimating equations. RESULTS Eighty-three bone-level implants from 65 patients were selected. The mean follow-up before peri-implantitis diagnosis was 99.47 ± 47.93 months. The radiographic mean marginal bone loss was 1.52 ± 1.33 mm (Tb to T1) and 0.58 ± 0.52 mm (T1 to T2). Restoration emergence angle and frequency of maintenance visits significantly affected MBLs from Tb to T1. Besides, 66.3% of the included implants' bone levels were in a zone within 1 mm of the apical end of the internal screw at T1 and remained in this zone during the second follow-up year. CONCLUSIONS Significant marginal bone loss occurred in the early post-diagnosis period of peri-implantitis, which could be affected by the restoration emergence angle. Peri-implant MBLs were frequently located in a zone within 1 mm of the apical end of the internal screw.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of the present study was to examine the influence of a combination material of a collagen cone and a collagen membrane on the healing process of extraction sockets with regard to histological, histochemical, and immunohistochemical parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS In a prospective randomized clinical study, 10 patients (test group) received a collagen combination material after tooth removal. The extraction sockets of 10 other patients (control group) were left to heal without further intervention. Eleven ±1 weeks after tooth extraction, histological biopsies were performed in both groups at the time of implant placement. Subsequently, the biopsies were evaluated semiquantitatively in terms of histological, histochemical, and immunohistochemical parameters for the identification of factors of bone metabolism and vascularization. RESULTS No significant difference between test and control group were found for any parameter. According to the descriptive data, the use of a collagen combination material seems to result in slightly higher values of the osteogenic Runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2) and vascularization. CONCLUSION The histological, histochemical, and immunohistochemical analysis of ARP with a collagen cone combined with a collagen membrane showed no significant differences in terms of bone metabolism and vascularization.

Abstract
Tooth fusion is a developmental dental anomaly that may affect both the deciduous and permanent dentition. Such anomalies may cause problems such as caries, periodontal disease or even esthetic impairments, which will require intervention. In the present case, a young patient was referred to the periodontal clinic for management of bilateral mandibular fused teeth as part of the orthodontic treatment. On the lower right, the teeth involved were incompletely fused involving only the cervical region. On the lower left, the two teeth were completely fused from the crown to the apex. A surgical resection was carried out on the fused teeth on the right, while the fused teeth on the left was undisturbed. Orthodontic treatment was later carried out to align both the upper and lower arch. The patient was satisfied with treatment outcome.

Abstract
Introduction The task of Group II was to review and update the existing data concerning extraction socket preservation with or without membranes and soft tissue influence on post-extraction alveolar ridge preservation; extraction socket preservation using different biomaterials as bone grafts, growth factors, and stem cells. Special interest was paid to the dental implant placement outcomes within grafted sockets. Material and Methods The main areas evaluated by this group were as follows: quantitative and qualitative assessment of the effect of different alveolar preservation techniques performed immediately after tooth extraction, with or without membranes and/or soft tissue grafting, and the use of different bone substitutes, stem cells or growth factors in the postextraction socket. Evaluation of the treatment outcomes of dental implants placed in the grafted sockets in terms of primary and secondary outcomes were assessed. The systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses were registered in PROSPERO, an international prospective register of systematic reviews: http://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/. TThe literature in the corresponding areas of interest was screened and reported following the PRISMA guidelines (Preferred Reporting Item for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis) Statement: http://www.prisma-statement.org/. Method of preparation of the systematic reviews, based on comprehensive search strategies, was discussed and standardized. The summary of the materials and methods employed by the authors in preparing the systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses is presented in the Preface chapter. Results The results and conclusions of the review process are presented in the respective papers. Three systematic reviews and one systematic review and meta-analysis were performed. The group's general commentaries, consensus statements, clinical recommendations and implications for research are presented in this article.
