Abstract
The rate of perceived effort (RPE) is a subjective scale widely used for defining training loads. However, the subjective nature of the metric might lead to an inaccurate representation of the imposed metabolic/mechanical exercise demands. Therefore, this study aimed to predict the rate of perceived exertions during running using biomechanical parameters extracted from a commercially available running smartwatch. Forty-three recreational runners performed a simulated 5-km race on a track, providing their RPE from a Borg scale (6-20) every 400 m. Running distance, heart rate, foot contact time, cadence, stride length, and vertical oscillation were extracted from a running smartwatch (Garmin 735XT). Machine learning regression models were trained to predict the RPE at every 5 s of the 5-km race using subject-independent (leave-one-out), as well as a subject-dependent regression method. The subject-dependent method was tested using 5%, 10%, or 20% of the runner's data in the training set while using the remaining data for testing. The average root-mean-square error (RMSE) in predicting the RPE using the subject-independent method was 1.8 ± 0.8 RPE points (range 0.6-4.1; relative RMSE ~ 12 ± 6%) across the entire 5-km race. However, the error from subject-dependent models was reduced to 1.00 ± 0.31, 0.66 ± 0.20 and 0.45 ± 0.13 RPE points when using 5%, 10%, and 20% of data for training, respectively (average relative RMSE < 7%). All types of predictions underestimated the maximal RPE in ~ 1 RPE point. These results suggest that the data accessible from commercial smartwatches can be used to predict perceived exertion, opening new venues to improve training workload monitoring.

Abstract
Background: Acute ingestion of ketone supplements alters metabolism and potentially exercise performance. No studies to date have evaluated the impact of co-ingestion of ketone salts with caffeine and amino acids on high intensity exercise performance, and no data exists in Keto-Adapted individuals.Methods: We tested the performance and metabolic effects of a pre-workout supplement containing beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) salts, caffeine, and amino acids (KCA) in recreationally-active adults habitually consuming a mixed diet (Keto-Naïve; n = 12) or a ketogenic diet (Keto-Adapted; n = 12). In a randomized and balanced manner, subjects consumed either the KCA consisting of ∼7 g BHB (72% R-BHB and 28% S-BHB) with ∼100 mg of caffeine, and amino acids (leucine and taurine) or Water (control condition) 15 minutes prior to performing a staged cycle ergometer time to exhaustion test followed immediately by a 30 second Wingate test.Results: Circulating total BHB concentrations increased rapidly after KCA ingestion in KN (154 to 732 μM) and KA (848 to 1,973 μM) subjects and stayed elevated throughout recovery in both groups. Plasma S-BHB increased >20-fold 15 minutes after KCA ingestion in both groups and remained elevated throughout recovery. Compared to Water, KCA ingestion increased time to exhaustion 8.3% in Keto-Naïve and 9.8% in Keto-Adapted subjects (P < 0.001). There was no difference in power output during the Wingate test between trials. Peak lactate immediately after exercise was higher after KCA (∼14.9 vs 12.7 mM).Conclusion: These results indicate that pre-exercise ingestion of a moderate dose of R- and S-BHB salts combined with caffeine, leucine and taurine improves high-intensity exercise performance to a similar extent in both Keto-Adapted and Keto-Naïve individuals.

Abstract
This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between nausea level and lactic acidosis during recovery from sprinting. In all, 13 recreationally active males completed a 60 s bout of maximal intensity cycling. Prior to and for 45 min following exercise, blood pH, pCO2 , and lactate levels were measured together with nausea. In response to sprinting, nausea, lactate, and H+ concentrations increased and remained elevated for at least 10 min (p < .001), whereas pCO2 increased only transiently (p < .001) before falling below pre-exercise levels (p < .001), with all these variables returning toward pre-exercise levels during recovery. Both measures of nausea adopted for analyses (nausea profile, NP; visual analogue scale, VAS), demonstrated significant repeated measures correlation (rmcorr) post-exercise between nausea and plasma lactate (VAS and NPrrm > 0.595, p < .0001) and H+ concentrations (VAS and NPrrm > 0.689, p < .0001), but an inconsistent relationship with pCO2 (VAS rrm = 0.250, p = .040; NP rrm = 0.144, p = .248) and bicarbonate levels (VAS rrm = -0.252, p = .095; NP rrm = -0.397, p = .008). Linear mixed modeling was used to predict the trajectory of nausea over time, with both lactate and H+ concentrations found to be key predictors of nausea (p < .0001). In conclusion, this study reveals a strong positive relationship between nausea and both H+ and lactate concentrations during recovery from sprinting, a finding consistent with H+ and lactate being potential mediators of nausea post-sprinting. However, as the timing of the recovery of both H+ and lactate was delayed, compared to that of nausea, further research is required to confirm these findings and investigate other potential mechanisms.
