Evaluation of Nitrogen Oxide Reduction Performance in Permeable Concrete Surfaces Treated with a TiO2 Photocatalyst

Fine dust, recently classified as a carcinogen, has raised concerns about the health effects of air pollution. Vehicle emissions, particularly nitrogen oxide (NOx), contribute to ultrafine dust formation as a fine dust precursor. A photocatalyst, such as titanium dioxide (TiO2), is a material that causes a catalytic reaction when exposed to light, has exceptional characteristics such as decomposition of pollutants, and can be used permanently. This study aimed to investigate NOx reduction performance by developing ecofriendly permeable concrete with photocatalytic treatment to reduce fine dust generated from road mobile pollution sources. Permeable concrete specimens containing an activated loess and zeolite admixture were prepared and subjected to mechanical and durability tests. All specimens, including the control (CTRL) and admixture, met quality standard SPS-F-KSPIC-001-2006 for road pavement. Slip resistance and permeability coefficient also satisfied the standards, while freeze-thaw evaluation criteria were met only by CTRL and A1Z1 specimens. NOx reduction performance of the permeable concrete treated with TiO2 photocatalyst was assessed using ISO standard and tank chambers. NOx reduction efficiency of up to 77.5% was confirmed in the permeable concrete specimen with TiO2 content of 7.5%. Nitrate concentration measurements indirectly confirmed photolysis of nitrogen oxide. Incorporating TiO2 in construction materials such as roads and sidewalks can improve the atmospheric environment for pedestrians near roads by reducing NOx levels through photocatalysis.

Virtual Reality Exercise Program Effects on Body Mass Index, Depression, Exercise Fun and Exercise Immersion in Overweight Middle-Aged Women: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Background: This study explored the effects of a virtual reality exercise program on overweight middle-aged women. Methods: This randomized controlled trial included women 40−65 years of age with a body mass index (BMI) of 23 kg/m2 or more living in Daejeon City. The virtual reality environment was set up by attaching an IoT sensor to an indoor bicycle and linking it with a smartphone, enabling exercise in an immersive virtual reality through a head-mounted display. Results: In the virtual reality exercise group, the BMI was significantly decreased after the 8-week intervention compared with the baseline value (F = 59.491, p < 0.001). The depression scores were significantly different among the three groups, with the intervention effect being more significant in the virtual reality exercise group than in the indoor bicycle exercise and control groups (F = 3.462, p < 0.001). Furthermore, the levels of exercise fun (F = 12.373, p < 0.001) and exercise immersion (F = 14.629, p < 0.001) were significantly higher in the virtual reality exercise group than in the indoor bicycle exercise and control groups. Conclusions: The virtual reality exercise program positively affected the BMI and the levels of depression, exercise fun, and exercise immersion in overweight middle-aged women. It is an effective home exercise program for obesity management in this population.

Association between exposure to particulate matter and school absences in Korean asthmatic adolescents

Background

Because particulate matter (PM) and asthma are closely related, the prevalence of school absence among adolescents with asthma can be affected by the concentration of PM. We aimed to investigate the relationship between school absences due to asthma and the total number of days that the PM concentration exceeded the standard.

Methods

We used the data from the 16th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey and the PM levels of 17 metropolitan cities and provinces gathered from the AirKorea. Information on the characteristics of asthmatic adolescents and the prevalence of school absence was obtained using a questionnaire, while the PM levels based on the total number of days with poor and very poor PM grades were collected from the AirKorea website. Both χ² test and logistic regression analysis were performed using the weights presented in the original dataset.

Results

In the case of particulate matter of 10 microns in diameter or smaller (PM₁₀), the odds ratio (OR) after adjusting for confounders (sex, school year, body mass index, smoking history, diagnosis of allergic rhinitis, diagnosis of atopic dermatitis and city size) was 1.07 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.01–1.13) for absents due to asthma when the total days of poor and very poor grades of PM₁₀ (81 μg/m³ or higher) increased by 1 day. In the analysis of particulate matter of 2.5 microns in diameter or smaller (PM_2.5), the OR after adjusting for confounders was 1.01 (95% CI: 1.00–1.03) for absents due to asthma when the total number of days with poor and very poor PM_2.5 grades (36 μg/m³ or higher) increased by 1 day.

Conclusions

A significant association was observed between the total number of days of poor and very poor PM₁₀ and PM_2.5 grades and school absence due to asthma; PM can cause asthma exacerbation and affect the academic life.
