Abstract
BACKGROUND Infertility caused by drugs that inhibit serotonin reuptake has been attributed to serotonin toxicity. Serotonin has been linked to cause a rise in prolactin and cortisol. This study examined the effects of meperidine, sertraline, tianeptine and combinations on female rat reproductive function. METHODS Female rats were split into 8 groups (n=7): healthy control (HG), meperidine (MG), sertraline (SG), tianeptine (TG), meperidine+sertraline (MSG), meperidine+tianeptine (MTG), sertraline+tianeptine (STG), meperidine+sertraline+tianeptine (MSTG). Meperidine (20 mg/kg, 2×1) was injected intramuscularly. Sertraline (30 mg/kg, 1×1) and tianeptine (5 mg/kg, 1×1) were given orally. The HG received distilled water as solvent. Treatments continued for 20 days. Then, adult males were added to the rat groups and drug treatment continued for another five days. Blood samples were collected on day 26 for biochemical tests. RESULTS Total oxidant status (TOS) and total antioxidant status (TAS) were not statistically significant between groups (p>0.05). Meperidine (p<0.001) and sertraline (p<0.001) alone increased prolactin levels in comparison to HG and tianeptine inhibited the increase (p<0.001). While meperidine increased corticosterone levels versus HG (p<0.001), sertraline and tianeptine were close to HG (p>0.05). Number of infertile animals was 6 for meperidine, 3 for sertraline, and none for tianeptine. While the duration of pregnancy in MG (15 days) and SG (15 days) was longer compared to HG (2.86 days), no change was observed in TG (2.5 days). CONCLUSION Tianeptine and other serotonin re-uptake stimulants may be useful in the treatment of reproductive dysfunction and infertility due to serotonin re-uptake inhibitor treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Systemic inflammation causes several organ damage by activating the intracellular signaling mechanisms. Heart and aorta tissues are the structures mostly affected by this situation. By examining underlying processes, this study sought to determine whether cannabidiol (CBD) may have protective effects against the cardiovascular damage brought on by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 32 female rats were randomly allocated to one of four groups: control, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (5 mg/kg, i.p., single dose), LPS + CBD (5 mg/kg, i.p., single dose), and CBD groups. The rats were killed six hours after receiving LPS, and tissues from the heart and aorta were taken. Histopathological and immunohistochemical analyzes were performed. Oxidative stress was evaluated biochemically by spectrophotometric method. Expression levels of genes were studied by RT-qPCR method. RESULTS Histopathological analysis of the LPS group showed moderate hyperemia, hemorrhages, edema, inflammation, and myocardial cell damage. There was a slight to moderate increase in Cox-1, G-CSF, and IL-3 immunoexpressions, along with enhanced expressions of IL-6, Hif1α, and STAT3 genes, and decreased expressions of eNOS genes. Additionally, there were increased levels of TOS and decreased TAS levels observed biochemically. CBD treatment effectively reversed and improved all of these observed changes. CONCLUSIONS CBD protects the heart and aorta against systemic inflammation through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity via regulating IL-6, Hif1α, STAT3, and eNOS intracellular pathways.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is known that the increase in oxidants and proinflammatory cytokines, as well as the decrease in antioxidants, play a role in ovarian ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of ramipril have been studied in various diseases. This study aims to investigate the effect of ramipril on I/R-induced ovarian damage in rats. METHODS Rats were divided into healthy (HG), sham (SG), ovary I/R (OIR), and ramipril + ovary I/R (ROIR) groups (n = 6/each group). One hour before the surgical procedures, ROIR was given 2 mg/kg ramipril. The lower abdomen of the SG, OIR, and ROIR was surgically opened. Right ovarian tissues of OIR and ROIR were subjected to 2 hours of ischemia and 6 hours of reperfusion. Then, all animals were euthanized, and their right ovaries were removed. Ovarian tissues were examined for oxidants (malondialdehyde), antioxidants (total glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase), and proinflammatory cytokines (nuclear factor kappa-B, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin 1 beta, and interleukin-6) analysis was performed. Tissues were examined histopathologically. RESULTS The ovarian tissue of the OIR, which underwent the I/R procedure, exhibited a significant increase in oxidant and proinflammatory cytokine levels, along with a decrease in antioxidant levels (P < .001). Ramipril suppressed the I/R-induced increase in oxidants and pro-inflammatory cytokines and the decrease in antioxidants (P < .001). Ramipril also attenuated I/R-induced histopathological damage in ovarian tissue (P < .05). CONCLUSION Ramipril treatment may be a treatment strategy to protect ovarian tissue against oxidative and inflammatory damage of I/R.

Abstract
The role of oxidants and proinflammatory cytokines in the pathogenesis of pneumonia caused by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) has been demonstrated. The present study aims to investigate the protective effect of ethyl acetate extract (EtOAc) obtained from Usnea longissima (UL) against acute oxidative and inflammatory lung damage due to S. aureus infection in rats. Albino Wistar-type male rats were divided into three groups: Healthy (HG), S. aureus inoculated (SaG), and S. aureus inoculated + ULEtOAc administered (SUL). SaG (n = 6) and SUL (n = 6) group rats' left nostrils (excluding HG) were inoculated with 0.1 ml bacterial mixture. After 24 hours, ULEtOAc (50 mg/kg) was administered orally to the SUL group, and the same volume of normal saline was administered orally to the HG (n = 6) and SaG groups. This procedure was performed once a day for seven days. Levels of oxidant and antioxidant parameters such as malondialdehyde (MDA) and total glutathione (tGSH), as well as pro-inflammatory cytokine levels such as nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-one beta (IL-1β), were measured in removed lung tissues. Tissues were also examined histopathologically. Biochemical results showed that ULEtOAc significantly suppressed the increase of MDA, NF-κB, TNF-α, and IL-1β levels and the decrease of tGSH caused by S. aureus in lung tissue. S. aureus inoculation caused severe mononuclear cell infiltration in interstitial areas, severe lymphoid hyperplasia in bronchial-associated lymphoid tissue and severe alveolar edema, histopathologically. Treatment with ULEtOAc had an attenuating effect on these histopathological findings. Experimental results from this study suggest that ULEtOAc may be beneficial in treating S. aureus-induced oxidative and inflammatory lung damage.

Abstract
Purpose : Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) plays an important role in the pathophysiology of acute limb ischemia, leading to damage to distant organs, including the lungs. A complex mechanism is involved in the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), release of inflammatory mediators, and neutrophil activation. One strategy to reduce the damage is administering selenium, an antioxidant enzyme component that can bind ROS and protect cells. This study aimed to compare the degree of lung injury due to limb IRI in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats with selenium administration versus those without selenium treatment. Materials and Methods : Fifteen male SD rats were divided into three groups: the control group (Group A), the ischemia-reperfusion with pre-reperfusion selenium (Group B), and the ischemia-reperfusion with post-reperfusion selenium (Group C). All animals underwent two hours of limb ischemia and three hours of reperfusion. Selenium was given intravenously at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg body weight. After reperfusion, lung specimens were histopathologically examined. Results : The median degree of lung injury was severe in Group A, mild in Group B, and moderate in Group C (P=0.01). Post hoc analysis revealed a significant difference in the degree of lung injury between Groups A and B (P=0.01), while a comparison between Groups A and C (P=0.06) and Groups B and C (P=0.31) revealed no significant difference. Conclusion : The administration of pre-reperfusion selenium significantly decreases lung injury induced by limb ischemia-reperfusion in SD rats.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to investigate possible preventive effect of ATP on optic nerve damage caused by amiodarone in rats. MATERIAL AND METHOD Thirty albino male Wistar rats weighing between 265 and 278 g were used in the study. Before the experiment, the rats were housed at 22 °C in a 12-h light/dark cycle under appropriate condition. The rats were equally divided into five groups of six animals each: healthy group, 50 mg/kg amiodarone (AMD-50), 100 mg/kg amiodarone (AMD-100), 25 mg/kg ATP + 50 mg/kg amiodarone (ATAD-50), and 25 mg/kg ATP + 100 mg/kg amiodarone (ATAD-100). At the end of 14th day, the animals were sacrificed using cardiac puncture under deep thiopental anaesthesia, and optic nerve tissues were harvested to measure superoxide dismutase (SOD), total glutathione (tGSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), and catalase (CAT) levels. RESULTS The MDA levels were found to be significantly higher in the AMD-50 and AMD-100 groups compared to the healthy group (p ˂ 0.001). There was also a significant difference between the AMD-50 and ATAD-50 groups, and between the AMD-100 and ATAD-100 groups regarding MDA levels (p ˂ 0.001). tGSH, SOD, and CAT levels were significantly lower in the AMD-50 and AMD-100 groups compared to the healthy group (p ˂ 0.001). ATP was found to partially inhibit amiodarone-induced optic neuropathy. CONCLUSION The biochemical and histopathological results of this study demonstrated that amiodarone at high doses caused more severe optic neuropathy inducing oxidative damage, but ATP could relatively antagonise these negative effects on the optic nerve. Therefore, we believe that ATP may be beneficial in preventing amiodarone-induced optic neuropathy.

Abstract
STUDY QUESTION What is the role of iron in the pathophysiology of endometriosis? SUMMARY ANSWER Iron excess is demonstrated wherever endometriotic tissues are found and is associated with oxidative stress, an inflammatory micro-environment, and cell damage; the iron-mediated oxidative stress is independently linked to subfertility, symptom severity, and malignant transformation. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Iron is found in excess in endometriotic tissues, and multiple mechanisms have been studied and posited to explain this. It is clear that iron excess plays a vital role in promoting oxidative stress and cell damage. The evidence base is large, but no comprehensive reviews exist to summarize our understanding and highlight the overarching themes to further our understanding and suggest future directions of study for the field. STUDY DESIGN SIZE DURATION This systematic review with a thematic analysis retrieved studies from the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases and searches were conducted from inception through to August 2022. Human and animal studies published in the English language were included and identified using a combination of exploded MeSH terms ('Iron' and 'Endometriosis') and free-text search terms ('Iron', 'Ferric', 'Ferrous', 'Endometriosis', 'Endometrioma'). PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS SETTING METHODS This review was reported in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. All studies reporting original data concerning the role of iron or iron complexes in the pathophysiology of endometriosis were included. Studies that did not report original data or provided a review of the field were excluded. Bias analysis was completed for each included study by using the Newcastle-Ottawa scoring system. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE There were 776 records identified and these were screened down to 53 studies which met the eligibility criteria, including 6 animal and 47 human studies, with 3556 individual participants. Iron excess is demonstrated in various tissues and fluids, including ovarian endometriomas, ovarian follicles, ectopic endometriotic lesions, and peritoneal fluid. Markers of oxidative stress are strongly associated with high iron levels, and aberrant expression of iron-transport proteins has been demonstrated. Abnormal resistance to ferroptosis is likely. Iron-mediated oxidative stress is responsible for a pro-inflammatory micro-environment and is linked to subfertility, symptom severity, and, possibly, malignant transformation. LIMITATIONS REASONS FOR CAUTION A minority of the included studies were of objectively low quality with a high risk of bias and may lead to misleading conclusions. Additionally, multiple studies failed to appropriately characterize the included patients by known confounding variables, such as menstrual cycle phase, which may introduce bias to the findings. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS Current literature depicts a central role of aberrant iron mechanics and subsequent oxidative stress in endometriosis. It is likely that iron excess is at least partly responsible for the persistence and proliferation of ectopic endometriotic lesions. As such, iron mechanics represent an attractive target for novel therapeutics, including iron chelators or effectors of the iron-oxidative stress pathway. There are significant gaps in our current understanding, and this review highlights and recommends several topics for further research. Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of NSAIDs have caused stomach injury by inhibiting endogenous mucosal prostaglandin production. Cucumis melo is reported to possess antiulcer potential. This study investigates the mechanism underlying the antiulcer potentials of Cucumis melo (CUM). METHODS Thirty-five male Wistar rat were randomly assigned to each of seven groups; A(control given water and rat pellets), B(gastric ulcer induced with ibuprofen 400 mg/kg), C (Misoprotol 200 μg/kg), D to G (pretreated with different variation of CUM extract; 25 %, 50 %, 75 % and 100 % at a dose of 1 ml/kg for 3 weeks prior to gastric ulcer induction). Ulcer score, ulcer index and percentage inhibition, total gastric acidity was measured. Antioxidant activities, Malondialdehyde, H+/K+ ATPase, PGE2, TNF-α was done by spectrophotometry. Molecular docking investigation of Cucumis melo compounds against Prostaglandin E2 was carried out. Level of significance was tested at P ≤ 0.05 using Tukey post hoc. RESULT Total gastric acidity, ulcer score, ulcer index, MDA, TNF-α significantly decreased after CUM treatment when compared to group B. The percentage inhibition, antioxidant activities, PGE2 concentration was significantly increased in all treatment groups compared to group B. Interactions of selected compounds of CUM with Prostaglandin E2 at various docking pockets showed folic acid has highest binding affinity followed by delta7-avenasterol and codisterol to PGE2 receptor. this study shows that one of the mechanisms by which CUM exhibits its antiulcer potential by enhancing Prostaglandin synthesis and antioxidant capacity. Therefore, Cucumis melo can therefore be explored as novel antiulcer agents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In women, agents used in chemotherapy treatment have side effects such as accelerating follicular depletion and early menopause. Thus, cytotoxic treatments may cause various effects ranging from partial damage to the ovary to premature ovarian failure (POI) and infertility. This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of carvacrol on cisplatin (CIS)-induced reproductive toxicity in female rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS The animals were divided to four groups; a healthy group (HG), administered only cisplatin 2.5 mg/kg (CIS); cisplatin 2.5 mg/kg + carvacrol mg/kg (CC-50), and cisplatin 2.5 mg/kg + carvacrol 100 mg/kg (CC-100). In this study, the CC-50 and CC-100 groups were injected with carvacrol at 50 and 100 mg/kg intraperitoneally (IP). The CIS and HG groupswere administered normal saline as a solvent in the same way. One hour afterwardthe CC-50 and CC-100 groups were injected with cisplatin at 2.5 mg/kg IP. This procedure was continued once a day for 14 days. At the end of this period, six rats from each group were euthanized with high-dose anaesthesia. Biochemical (oxidant-antioxidant and proinflammatory cytokines) and histopathological examinations were performed on the right ovarian tissue removed from the dead rats. The remaining (n = 6 in each group) animals were kept in the laboratory with mature male rats for two months for breeding. Rats that didn't give birth within two months were considered infertile. A one-way ANOVA test was used for the biochemical analysis, the a Kruskal Wallis test was used for the histopathological analysis. RESULTS It has been observed that cisplatine causes oxidative stress and inflammatory damage in the ovarian tissue of animals and ultimately causes infertility due to this oxidative stress. While carvacrol significantly suppressed cisplatin-related oxidative stress in ovarian tissue at the 50 and 100 mg/kg doses, it could suppress proinflammatory cytokine increase only at thecytokine increase only at the 100 mg/kg dose. In addition, carvacrol significantly reduced the development of cisplatin-related infertility (from 0 to 83.3%) at a dose of 100 mg/kg. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that carvacrol at high doses can reduce the harmful effects of cisplatin on the ovary and improve ovarian reserve in rats.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The role of oxidative stress, as well as inflammation in the pathogenesis of methotrexate (MTX)-induced oral mucositis, is a known fact. The anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties of taxifolin-the effect we tested against MTX-induced oral mucosal damage-are well known. OBJECTIVE Evaluating biochemically and histopathologically the effects of taxifolin on methotrexate-induced oral mucosal damage in rats. METHODOLOGY In the taxifolin+MTX (TMTX) group, 50 mg/kg taxifolin was orally administered to rats by gavage. In the MTX and healthy (HG) groups, normal saline was applied to rats as solvent by the same method. One hour after administration of taxifolin and solvent, 5 mg/kg MTX was orally administered to rats in the MTX and TMTX groups. Taxifolin and methotrexate were administered once a day for 30 days. Macroscopic, biochemical, and histopathological evaluations were performed on the inner cheek and tongue tissues of rats. These parts were removed after rats were killed with a high-dose anesthesia. RESULTS Taxifolin with MTX prevented the increase in oxidant and pro-inflammatory parameters, such as malondialdehyde (MDA), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β), interleukin 6 (IL-6), on the inner cheek and tongue tissues of rats. Moreover, taxifolin antagonized the decrease in total glutathione (tGSH). Taxifolin decreased MTX-induced histopathological damage. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that taxifolin may be useful to treat MTX-associated oral mucositis.

Abstract
The dangerous effects of oxidative stress can be alleviated by antioxidants—substances with the ability to prevent damage caused by reactive oxygen species. The adsorption of antioxidants onto nanocarriers is a well-known method that might protect them against rough environ-mental conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate the adsorption and desorption of gallic acid (GA), protocatechuic acid (PCA), chlorogenic acid (CGA), and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (4-HBA) using commercially available mesoporous silica materials (MSMs), both parent (i.e., SBA-15 and MCM-41) and surface functionalized (i.e., SBA-NH2 and SBA-SH). The MSMs loaded with active compounds were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermoporometry (TPM), and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC-CAD) was used to evaluate the performance of the adsorption and desorption processes. The antioxidant potential was investigated using the Folin−Ciocalteu (FC) spectrophotometric method. Among the studied MSMs, the highest adsorption of GA was observed for amine-modified SBA-15 mesoporous silica. The adsorption capacity of SBA-NH2 increased in the order of PCA, 4-HBA < GA < CGA. Different desorption effectiveness levels of the adsorbed compounds were observed with the antioxidant capacity preserved for all investigated compounds.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to investigate the possible protective effects of rutin, also called vitamin P1, against pulmonary contusion induced by blunt chest trauma in a rat model. METHODS Thirty male albino Wistar rats were separated into three equal groups as healthy group, trauma group, and trauma+rutin group. After anesthesia provided by intraperitoneal administration of 60 mg/kg ketamine and xylazine by inhalation at appropriate intervals, 200 g weight was dropped from 1 m height to the anterior chest wall of the animals in the trauma group (n=10) and trauma+rutin group (n=10) and pulmonary contusion was created. Thirty min after the trauma, 50 mg/kg of rutin was administered into the stomach of trauma+rutin group animals orally with gavage. The rats received rutin once daily for two days and were sacrificed 48 h later. Their lung tissues were removed and examined biochemically and histopathologically. RESULTS Nuclear factor-kappa B, cyclooxygenase-2, and malondialdehyde levels increased in the trauma group compared to the healthy group, and rutin administration prevented this increase. Total glutathione levels decreased in the trauma group, and rutin administration also prevented this decrease. The histopathological findings were compatible with the biochemical findings. CONCLUSION Our study results suggest that rutin has a protective effect on contused lung tissue in rats.

Abstract
Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH) are widely used worldwide. Their negative impact on human health is a matter of debate by regulatory bodies and the public. The present study sought to determine the impact of a GBH on the vital organs; and the potential protective effects of vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) supplementation. Sixty white Swiss mice were randomly assigned to five treatment groups, each containing twelve mice. Group one represented the normal control; Group two mice were treated with 375 mg/kg of GBH for 56 days; Group three mice received 10 mg/kg of cyanocobalamin for 56 days; Group four mice were administered with 375 mg/kg of GBH and 10 mg/kg cyanocobalamin for 56 days and Group five received 10 mg/kg cyanocobalamin first for 7 days, then continued thereafter co-administered together with 375 mg/kg of GBH for 56 days). Oral administration of GBH induced severe anemia in mice, which was attenuated by cyanocobalamin. Moreover, GBH resulted in a very significant alteration of platelets, WBCs, and its sub-types. Once again, cyanocobalamin stabilized the levels of platelets and WBCs in the presence of GBH. GBH-induced elevation of triglycerides and HDL was nullified by the administration of cyanocobalamin. Further studies showed evidence for GBH-induced inflammation represented by an imbalance in serum levels of the TNF-α: IL-10 and IFN-γ ratios. The GBH severely depleted GSH levels in the liver. A GBH-induced rise in GSH in the kidney, lungs and brain was noted; and is an indicator of antioxidant capacity enhancement in response to a GBH-induced oxidant challenge. Moreover, cyanocobalamin supplementation abrogated GBH-induced oxidative stress as depicted by stabilized GSH levels in the liver, kidney, lungs, and brain. In the presence of cyanocobalamin, the GBH-induced liver injury depicted by elevation of AST, ALT, and bilirubin, was attenuated. From the results, we conclude that the capacity of cyanocobalamin to assuage GBH-induced inflammatory responses, hepatotoxicity, and hematological alteration as well as oxidative stress may be attributable to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The current findings provide a solid foundation for further scrutiny of this phenomenon, with vital implications in GBH exposure and the role of potent antioxidant supplementation in the management of GBH-induced toxicity.

Abstract
The methanol metabolite that causes hepatotoxicity is formic acid, generating reactive oxygen radical formation and cell damage. Carvacrol is an antioxidant monoterpenic phenol produced from Thymus vulgaris. This study aimed to investigate the effects of carvacrol on methanol-induced oxidative liver damage in rats. Eighteen rats were divided into three groups. Methotrexate was administered orally for 7 days to methotrexate+methanol (MTM) and methotrexate+methanol+carvacrol (MMC) groups. Methotrexate was given before methanol to cause methanol poisoning. Distilled water was given to the healthy group (HG) as a solvent. At the end of the 7th day, 20% methanol was administered orally at a dose of 3 g/kg to the MTM and MMC groups. Four hours after methanol administration, 50 mg/kg carvacrol was injected intraperitoneally into the MMC group. Animals were sacrificed 8 h after carvacrol injection. Biochemical markers were studied in the excised liver tissue and blood serum samples, and histopathological evaluations were made. Severe hemorrhage, hydropic degeneration, pycnosis, and mononuclear cell infiltration were observed in the liver of the MTM group. Additionally, the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), total oxidant status (TOS), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were significantly higher, and total glutathione (tGSH) and total antioxidant status (TAS) were significantly lower in the MTM group compared to HG (P<0.001). Carvacrol prevented the increase in MDA, TOS, ALT and AST levels with methanol and the decrease in tGSH and TAS levels (P<0.001), and alleviated the histopathological damage. Carvacrol may be useful in the treatment of methanol-induced liver damage.

Abstract
Ovarian ischemia-reperfusion (I-R) injury may damage remote organs, including the lungs. We investigated whether apocynin, a NADPH oxidase inhibitor, might protect against ovarian I-R induced apoptosis in the lungs of rats. Bilateral ovarian I-R was induced for 3 h, then apocynin was applied at two concentrations. Lung tissue was evaluated using spectrophotometric and immunohistochemical methods. We found that I-R increased total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) levels, and immunostaining of nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), light chain 3B (LC3B), interleukin 1-beta (IL-1β), caspase-3 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), but decreased superoxide dismutase (SOD) values. Apocynin application to I-R injured rats enhanced recovery of lung tissue oxidants and improved both histology and frequency of apoptosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ischemia is a condition in which blood flow to tissues is decreased or entirely stopped for various reasons. The reperfusion process exacerbates damage caused by ischemia in the organs and tissues. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are mainly responsible for ischemia-reperfusion (IR) damage. ROS increase results in lipid peroxidation (LPO) and oxidative stress. In the literature, taxifolin reportedly suppresses ROS production. This study aimed to determine the effect of taxifolin, which is a flavonoid, on IR injury of the sciatic nerve in rats. METHODS This study divided 30 albino Wistar rats into 3 groups: IR without medication (IR) group, taxifolin applied IR (TAX+IR) group, and only dissection made to the sciatic nerve sham group (SHAM). Sciatic nerve injury was induced by applying 2 hours of ischemia and 3 hours of reperfusion to the abdominal aorta and iliolumbar arteries. Biochemical and histopathologic investigations then were performed on sciatic nerve tissues. Malondialdehyde, total glutathione, glutathione reductase, and glutathione peroxidase were analyzed as oxidative stress markers, and tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β levels were evaluated as inflammatory stress markers in biochemical tests. RESULTS The IR group has statistically significantly high oxidant and cytokine levels and low antioxidant levels compared with the TAX+IR group. Taxifolin treatment was also shown to cause significant histopathologic improvement. CONCLUSIONS We suggest that taxifolin may be effective in preventing IR injury of the sciatic nerve.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We investigated, the effects of aprepitant (APRE) on the lung tissues of rats with an experimental polymicrobial sepsis model (CLP: cecal ligation and puncture) biochemically, molecularly and histopathologically. METHODS A total of 40 rats were divided into 5 groups with 8 animals in each group. Group 1 (SHAM), control group; Group 2 (CLP), cecal ligation and puncture; Group 3 (CLP + APRE10), rats were administered CLP + 10 mg/kg aprepitant; Group 4 (CLP + APRE20), rats were administered CLP + 20 mg/kg aprepitant; and Group 5 (CLP + APRE40), rats were administered CLP + 40 mg/kg aprepitant. A polymicrobial sepsis model was induced with CLP. After 16 h, lung tissues were taken for examination. Tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and nuclear factor-kappa b (NFK-b) messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) expressions were analysed by real-time PCR (RT-PCR), biochemically antioxidant parameters such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH) and oxidant parameters such as malondialdehyde (MDA) and lung damage histopathologically. KEY FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS The GSH level and SOD activity increased while the MDA level and the expressions of TNF-α and NFK-b were reduced in the groups treated with APRE, especially in the CLP + APRE40 group. The histopathology results supported the molecular and biochemical results.

Abstract
Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2) is a transcriptional activator of the cell protection gene that binds to the antioxidant response element (ARE). Therefore, Nrf2 protects cells and tissues from oxidative stress. Normally, Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1) inhibits the activation of Nrf2 by binding to Nrf2 and contributes to Nrf2 break down by ubiquitin proteasomes. In moderate oxidative stress, Keap1 is inhibited, allowing Nrf2 to be translocated to the nucleus, which acts as an antioxidant. However, under unusually severe oxidative stress, the Keap1-Nrf2 mechanism becomes disrupted and results in cell and tissue damage. Oxide-containing atmospheric environment generally contributes to the development of respiratory diseases, possibly leading to the failure of the Keap1-Nrf2 pathway. Until now, several studies have identified changes in Keap1-Nrf2 signaling in models of respiratory diseases, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)/acute lung injury (ALI), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and asthma. These studies have confirmed that several Nrf2 activators can alleviate symptoms of respiratory diseases. Thus, this review describes how the expression of Keap1-Nrf2 functions in different respiratory diseases and explains the protective effects of reversing this expression.

Abstract
AIM In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effect of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) on cisplatin-induced oxidative retinal damage in rats biochemically and histopathologically. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty male Wistar albino rats were divided into 3 groups randomly: untreated control (C group), only 2.5 mg/kg cisplatin daily administrated group for 2 weeks (CP group), 2.5 mg/kg cisplatin + 20 mg/kg orally CoQ10 daily administrated group for 2 weeks (CoQC group). At the end of experimental period, blood samples obtained before sacrification for the biochemical examination of serum malondialdehyde (MDA), total glutathione (tGSH), total oxidant system (TOS), total antioxidant systemic (TAS) levels and after eyes were removed for examined histopathology. RESULTS As a result of our study, severe histopathological damage was detected in the retinal tissue of the cisplatin group with serum malondialdehyde (MDA) and total oxidant system (TOS) levels were high and total glutathione (tGSH) and total antioxidant systemic (TAS) levels were low. However, it was observed that the histopathological damage associated with cisplatin was decreased in the retinal tissue of the CoQ10 group, which inhibited the increase in blood serum MDA/TOS levels and decrease in tGSH/TAS levels. CONCLUSION The biochemical and histopathological results of our study were compatible with each other, so we concluded that the damage to the rat retinal tissue caused by cisplatin may be reversible with coenzyme.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Neuropathic pain and neuropathy is commonly seen after ischemia-reperfusion injuries. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of lutein on ischemia-reperfusion (I/R)-induced vasculitic neuropathic pain and neuropathy in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS An hour before anesthesia, 6 Albino Wistar male rats with I/R were orally administered with 1 mg/kg lutein (LIR group). Two groups of 6 such rats who underwent surgery were provided with 0.5 ml distilled water (as solvent) either via oral administration (SIR group) or by gavage (sham group or SG). One hour following the administration, the later femoral arteries of the LIR and SIR rats were closed using a sterile silk thread and ischemia was induced in the sciatic nerve for 4 h, followed by reperfusion for 24 h. The femoral artery of the SG group was not closed with suture. Next, 1 mg/kg lutein was re-administered only to the LIR group for 1 h, followed by measurement of the paw pain thresholds by the Basile Algesimeter. The levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), total glutathione (tGSH), nuclear factor-kB (NF-κB), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in the sciatic nerve tissues were measured, and the tissues were histopathologically examined. RESULTS We found that the MDA, NF-κB, and TNF-α levels were higher and the tGSH level was lower in the SIR group relative to those in the LIR group, and the differences were statistically significant. Significant histopathological damage was noted in the SIR group, whereas the LIR group demonstrated protection from oxidative damage. CONCLUSION Lutein is potentially useful in the treatment of I/R-related neuropathy and neuropathic pain.

Abstract
A complex mixture of organic contaminants and metals is associated with neuron-fertility disorders and studies have demonstrated that phenolic antioxidants from herbal origin, possesses a strong protective potential. This study aimed to investigate the protection of phenolic croton zambesicus (C-ZAMB) leaves against neuro-ovarian damage in rats exposed to chronic mixture of anthropogenic toxicants (EOMABRSL). The animals were divided into five groups (n = 10): Group I was given 0.5 ml of distilled water only; Group II received 0.5 ml of EOMABRSL for 98 days; Group III received 0.5 ml of EOMABRSL for 70 days and withdrew for 28 days; Group IV received 0.5 ml of EOMABRSL for 70 days +400 mg/kg phenolic C-ZAMB for 28 days; Group V received 400 mg/kg C-ZAMB only for 28 days via oral route. Both non-withdrawal and withdrawal EOMABRSL-exposed animals exhibited neuro-ovarian impairment by up-regulating neuronal 51 eco-nucleotidase (51ENT), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butrylcholinesterase (BuChE), synaptosomal monoamine oxidase-A (MAO-A) with altered cerebral antioxidants. Similarly, exposure to EOMABRSL for 98 and 70 days caused ovarian injury by amplifying the activity of 51ENT with corresponding decline of fertility index, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and Δ5 17β-hydroxyl steroid dehydrogenase (Δ517β-HSD). EOMABRSL intoxication also increased the neuro-ovarian MDA content with reduced numbers of neonates. Phenolic antioxidants from C-ZAMB leaves identified by High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) ameliorated the chronic EOMABRSL intoxication. The treatment also prevented ovarian lesions by depleting MDA content and improved antioxidant status. Thus, confirming its neuro-ovarian protection.

Abstract
It is known that the combined use of antibiotics, such as isoniazid and rifampicin, in the treatment of tuberculosis causes oxidative kidney damage. The aim of this study was to biochemically and histopathologically investigate the effect of lycopene on oxidative kidney damage due to the administration of isoniazid and rifampicin in albino Wistar male rats. Lycopene at a dose of 5 mg/kg was orally administered to lycopene+isoniazid+rifampicin (LIR) rats, and normal sunflower oil (0.5 mL) was orally administered to isoniazid+rifampicin (IR) and healthy control (HG) rats as vehicle by gavage. One hour after the administration of lycopene and vehicle, 50 mg/kg isoniazid and rifampicin were given orally to the LIR and IR groups. This procedure was performed once a day for 28 days. Rats were sacrificed by a high dose of anesthesia at the end of this period, and oxidant-antioxidant parameters were measured in the removed kidney tissues. Creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels were measured in blood samples, and kidney tissues were also evaluated histopathologically. The combined administration of isoniazid and rifampicin changed the oxidant-antioxidant balance in favor of oxidants, and it increased blood urea nitrogen and creatinine levels, which are indicators of kidney function. Co-administration of isoniazid and rifampicin also caused oxidative kidney damage. Lycopene biochemically and histopathologically decreased oxidative kidney damage induced by isoniazid and rifampicin administration. These results suggested that lycopene may be beneficial in the treatment of nephrotoxicity due to isoniazid and rifampicin administration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acrolein is a reactive aldehyde that forms during burning of wood and other fuels. It is also a product of lipid peroxidation (LPO) reactions and is present in cigarette smoke. Acrolein is known to cause oxidative stress and inflammatory nerve tissue damage. Lutein is a tetraterpenoid molecule with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. There appear to be no studies on the effect of lutein on vestibulocochlear nerve damage induced by acrolein. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of lutein on vestibulocochlear nerve damage induced by acrolein in rats using biochemical and histopathological methods. METHODS The rats were divided into three groups (n = 6, for each group) a healthy control group (HG), an acrolein (ACR) group and a lutein and acrolein (LACR) group. In the LACR group, lutein was administered (1 mg/kg) via oral gavage. The ACR and HG groups received saline via oral gavage. Then, 1 h after the administration of lutein and saline, the LACR and ACR groups were treated with 3 mg/kg of acrolein via oral gavage. This procedure was repeated once a day for 30 days. RESULTS The results of biochemical experiments showed that in the vestibulocochlear nerve tissues of the animals treated with acrolein, the levels of malondialdehyde, total oxidants, nuclear factor kappa b, tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin 1 beta significantly increased, whereas the levels of total glutathione and total antioxidants decreased as compared to those in the HG and LACR groups. In addition, severe histopathological damage was observed in vestibulocochlear nerve tissue of the acrolein group, whereas this damage was alleviated in the lutein group. CONCLUSION Lutein protected vestibulocochlear nerve tissue from acrolein-associated oxidative and proinflammatory damage. This suggests that lutein might be useful in preventing or treating acrolein-induced ototoxicity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND X-rays are defined as ionizing radiation and hydrolyze the water, causing free radical formation. Oxidative stress is the damage that occurs in cells due to the lack of antioxidants, which detoxifies them, with the increased production of free radicals that occur during normal cellular metabolism. PURPOSE To examine the acute effects of computed tomography (CT), i.e. ionizing radiation, on oxidative stress and antioxidant defense mechanisms. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included a total of 53 patients that were selected among the patients that underwent non-contrast full-body CT. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities were investigated in blood samples taken from patients. RESULTS The post-scan levels of MDA increased significantly while the post-scan levels of GSH, SOD, and CAT decreased significantly compared to their pre-scan levels. CONCLUSION CT, which is a widely used X-ray imaging technique and has numerous known side effects, was found to increase the levels of MDA, which is an indicator of oxidative stress, and to decrease the levels of some antioxidants including GSH, SOD, and CAT.

Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the protective effect of dexmedetomidine on gastric injury
induced by ischemia reperfusion (I/R) in rats. Methods: A total of 18 male albino Wistar rats were divided groups as: gastric
ischemia reperfusion (GIR), gastric ischemia reperfusion and 50 μg/kg
dexmedetomidine (DGIR) and sham operation (HG) group. After the third hour
of reperfusion, the biochemical and histopathological examinations were
performed on the removed stomach tissue. Results: Malondialdehyde (MDA) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) levels were found to be
significantly higher in GIR compared to HG (p < 0.05). A statistically
significant decrease was observed at the DGIR compared to the GIR for
oxidants levels. Total glutathione (tGSH) and superoxide dismutase (SOD)
levels were statistically significantly decreased at the GIR, and
antioxidants levels were found to be significantly higher in the DGIR (p
< 0.05) There was no significant difference between HG and DGIR in terms
of SOD (p = 0.097). The DGIRs’ epitheliums, glands and vascular structures
were close to normal histological formation. Conclusions: Dexmedetomidine is found to prevent oxidative damage on the stomach by
increasing the antioxidant effect. These results indicate that
dexmedetomidine may be useful in the treatment of
ischemia-reperfusion-related gastric damage.

Abstract
Objective: Ischemic stroke is one of the leading causes of disability in adults worldwide. The present study was aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Narirutin-rich fraction (NRF), obtained from grape fruit peel, on cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury in rats.Methods: Male Wistar rats (180-200 g) were subjected to bilateral carotid artery occlusion for 30 min followed by reperfusion for 24 h to induce cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury. NRF (150, 300 mg/kg, oral) was administered for 7 days continuously before animals were subjected to ischemia/reperfusion injury. Various behavioral tests (for measurement of motor coordination, locomotor activity, and spatial memory), biochemical parameters (lipid peroxidation, superoxide dismutase, and catalase activity), and histopathological alterations were assessed.Results: Seven-day NRF (150 and 300 mg/kg) pretreatment significantly improved neurobehavioral alterations and histological findings as compared to the disease control group. Further NRF treatment significantly reduced oxidative damage as indicated by improved lipid peroxidation, superoxide dismutase, and catalase activity as compared to disease control animals.Conclusion: The present study demonstrated the protective effect of NRF against cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury in rats. The results suggest that NRF can be a potential pretreatment option against cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury.

Abstract
Objective
The aim of our study was to evaluate the effect of two different doses of lycopene, an antioxidant, on experimentally induced ovarian ischemia/reperfusion (IR) injury in rat model.
Materials and Methods
Twenty-four female rats were randomly divided into four groups: sham operation (group 1), 3-hour ischemia, 3-hour reperfusion (IR) (group 2), and IR + 100 mg/kg lycopene (PO) (group 3), IR + 200 mg/kg of lycopene (group 4). The rats’ superoxide dismutase (SOD), myeloperoxidase (MPO) activities, malondialdehyde (MDA), and glutathione (GSH) levels were calculated. Ovarian tissue damage was assessed using a histopathological scoring system.
Results
Serum parameter levels and histological scores showed that treatment with lycopene may be conservative approach to prevent IR injury after the ovarian detorsion procedure.The improvement with lycopene was higher at 200 mg than at 100 mg. The MPO and MDA values were significantly lower in groups 3 and 4 as compared with group 2 (

< 0.05), whereas the MPO and MDA values were lower in group 4 as compared with group 3.The SOD and GSH values were significantly higher in groups 3 and 4 as compared with group 2 (

< 0.05), whereas the SOD and GSH values were higher in group 4 as compared with group 3.Tissue damage scores were elevated in the IR group compared with the sham group, but the treatment with different lycopene doses after reperfusion improved the histopathological tissue damage scores.
Conclusion
The results showed that lycopene treatment reduced ovarian IR damage. Antioxidant activity was found to increase in a dose-dependent manner. Lycopene treatment may be conservative approach for ovarian torsion patients after the detorsion procedure to prevent IR damage.

Abstract
The study aimed to investigate the potential attenuation effect of chitosan in liver ischemia/reperfusion injury (I/R), and its relevant protective mechanisms. Chitosan (200 mg/kg) has been administered orally for 30 days, later animals underwent liver 45 min ischemia and reperfusion for 60 min. Following treatment with chitosan, the levels of serum aminotransferases and lactate dehydrogenase were significantly reduced. Similarly, hepatic (GSH, SOD, CAT, GST and GPx) were enhanced, and the level of tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) was decreased. In addition, inflammatory cytokinesis (TNF-α and TGF-β) have recorded a significant decrease in their mRNA expression and protein levels using qPCR and ELISA respectively. Marked reduction of apoptosis has been indicated by the elevation in BCL2, and decreasing in BAX, Caspace-3 and Cytochrome-c expression levels, which furthermore confirmed by DNA fragmentation assay. The enhancement of the previous parameters resulted in a marked improvement in the liver architectures after chitosan administration. In conclusion, chitosan has proved its efficiency as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agent through its inhibitory effect of cytokines and reducing ROS respectively. In addition, chitosan could modulate the changes in histological structure and alleviate apoptosis induced by liver I/R, which recommend it as an efficient agent for protection against liver I/R injury.

Abstract
Introduction Cisplatin is one of the most frequently used chemotherapeutics, which is known to cause both tumor and normal lung tissue damage through the generation of free radicals and cells apoptosis/necrosis. Melatonin is a neurohormone that regulates numerous physiological processes in the body both through receptor pathways and by maintaining tissue redox homeostasis. Material and methods The extent of rat lung damage induced by cisplatin and the effects of melatonin on this process was determined based on the pathohistological changes and biochemical disturbances in tissue lipid peroxidation, protein carbonyl modification and in the activity of xanthine oxidase (XO), caspase-3 and DNases. Results Histopathological analysis of rat lung tissue obtained from animals that received cisplatin found them to be edematous, with significant deterioration of alveolar epithelium. These morphological changes are accompanied by a significant increase in all studied oxidative stress-related parameters, as well as with the activity of apoptosis-related enzymes. A five-day treatment with melatonin completely prevented a cisplatin-induced increase in oxidative stress-related parameters and in the activity of XO, caspase-3 and alkaline DNase. Also, the histopathological changes observed during microscopic analysis were much less pronounced than in the group that received cisplatin only. Conclusions These results can potentially be connected with the ability of melatonin to inhibit the activity of XO, caspase-3 and alkaline DNase and/or its ability to scavenge free radicals, thus preventing lung damage induced by cisplatin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The balance between oxidants and antioxidants is known as oxidative balance, which is impaired in many disease conditions such as osteoarthritis (OA). In this study, we aimed to evaluate this balance in OA patients through the evaluation of the oxidant to the antioxidant ratio. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 62 knee OA patients and 20 age, sex, and BMI-matched healthy controls were included in this cross-sectional study. Serum total oxidant status (TOS) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were evaluated using the oxidation-reduction colorimetric assay. The TOS to TAC ratio (TOS/TAC) was evaluated as an estimate of the oxidant to antioxidant balance. RESULTS The mean TOS was 14.2 ± 2 μM in the healthy controls and 23.3 ± 7 μM in the OA patients (p < 0.001). The mean TAC was 38.8 ± 6.6 μM in the healthy subjects and 35.8 ± 12 μM in the OA patients (p = 0.33). The mean TOS/TAC was 0.38 ± 0.09 in the healthy subjects and 0.72 ± 0.3 in the OA patients (p < 0.0001). TOS/TAC value was capable of distinguishing OA patients from healthy controls with the sensitivity and specificity of 87.1% and 80%, respectively (p < 0.001). At the cutoff value of 0.46, positive TOS/TAC (>0.46) was identified in 100% of grade I patients, whereas it was negative in 27.3%, 16.7%, and 16.7% of grades II, III, and IV, respectively (p = 0.039). CONCLUSION In the knee OA, an equation of the serum TOS to TAC could be a good representative of oxidative balance than each component individually.

Abstract
Cytarabine is effectively used in the treatment of adult acute leukemia, but it has a dose-limiting side effect of fatal pulmonary oedema because it increases the vascular permeability of the alveolar capillaries. The aim of the present study was to conduct a radiological, biochemical and histopathological investigation of the effect of rutin on cytarabine-associated pulmonary oedema in rats. Rats were treated with a combination of rutin+cytarabine by administering oral rutin at a dose of 50 mg/kg; other rat groups were orally administered the same volume of physiological saline. One hour after administration of rutin or saline, the rutin+cytarabine and cytarabine groups received an intraperitoneal injection of cytarabine (200 mg/kg). This administration procedure was repeated once a day for 14 days. Radiologically, 50% of the animals given cytarabine alone showed lung oedema, but the rutin+cytarabine group showed no oedema. The inclusion of rutin decreased the amounts of cytarabine-associated malondialdehyde, tumour necrosis factor-α, and nuclear factor-κB in the lung tissue. Rutin also inhibited the reduction of total glutathione by nitric oxide. These findings suggest that rutin may be a beneficial adjunct that can minimise the development of cytarabine-associated pulmonary oedema.

Abstract
Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of trimetazidine (TMZ) and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) on cisplatin-induced cardiotoxicity in rat cardiomyocytes. Methods: Rat cardiomyocytes were isolated and subjected to cisplatin (200 µM) treatment with and without TMZ (200 µM) and CoQ10 (200 mg/L) pretreatment. The cell viability, apoptosis, oxidant and antioxidant indicators, and mitochondrial dysfunction were examined. Results: TMZ or CoQ10 significantly attenuated cisplatin-induced cell viability inhibition (p<0.01) and apoptosis (p<0.001), and the combined use of TMZ and CoQ10 pretreatment exerted a pronounced effect compared to the effects of using each of these agents individually (p<0.05). TMZ or CoQ10 inhibited the levels of reactive oxidative species (ROS, p<0.01) and malondialdehyde (MDA, p<0.001 and p<0.01, respectively), elevated the activities of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD, p<0.01) and catalase (CAT, p<0.01 and p<0.05, respectively), evidently enhanced nuclear translocation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2, p<0.05), alleviated mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) loss (p<0.05), and down-regulated the release of cytochrome c (cyto-c) into the cytosol (p<0.01) in cisplatin-treated cells. The combined use of TMZ and CoQ10 treatment was more effective than using either agent alone (p<0.01 for ROS, MDA, CAT, and cytosolic cyto-c; p<0.05 for SOD, nuclear Nrf2, and ΔΨm loss). Conclusion: TMZ and CoQ10 showed protective effects against cisplatin-induced cardiotoxicity via attenuating oxidative stress.

Abstract
The present study was aimed to determine the protective effects of Plantago major L (PM) leaf extracts on the testicular torsion/detorsion (T/D)-induced ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in rats. Twenty-four mature male Sprague-Dawley rats, weighing 200-220 g, were selected. They were randomly divided into four groups of six animals each: Sham (sham-operated rats; all the surgical steps were performed but T/D was not induced), TDC (Control group; T/D was induced and the right testicular torsion of 720° lasting two hours was followed by detorsion), TDP50 (T/D-operated rats received 50.00 mg kg-1 of PM extract daily for seven days intraperitoneally after detorsion) and TDP100 (T/D-operated rats received 100 mg kg-1 of PM extract daily for seven days intraperitoneally after detorsion). After seven days of treatment, the right testicles were collected. Histopathological and biochemical analyses including levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and catalase (CAT) and peroxidase activities were determined in testicular tissues of the rats. Tissue sections were taken from testis, Hematoxylin-Eosin staining was done, and the slides were examined by a light microscope. The level of MDA was significantly increased in the testes of the TDC group. The CAT activity levels were decreased significantly after I/R. The post-torsion treatment with PM, particularly at 100 mg kg-1, prevented the increase in lipid peroxidation and reduced the CAT activity levels. The PM also prevented I/R-induced cellular damage and histological changes in the testicular tissues. According to the results of the current study, PM leaf extracts had significant positive effects on the testicular T/D-induced I/R injury. The possible mechanism of reduction in biochemical and histological injuries by PM extracts could be due to antioxidant property.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS This study aimed to investigate the effect of lutein on methotrexate (MTX)-induced pulmonary toxicity in rats biochemically and histopathologically. METHODS The rats in the MTX + lutein (MTXL, n = 6) group were given 1 mg/kg of lutein orally. A 0.9% NaCl solution was administered orally to the MTX (n = 6) group and the healthy group (HG, n = 6). One hour later, a single 20 mg/kg dose of MTX was injected intraperitoneally in the MTXL and MTX. Lutein or 0.9% NaCl solution was administered once a day for 5 days. At the end of this period, malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase (MPO), total glutathione (tGSH), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) were measured in the lung tissues from the animals euthanized with 50 mg/kg thiopental sodium anesthesia. Subsequently, histopathological examinations were performed. RESULTS The levels of MDA, MPO, IL-1β, and TNF-α in the lung tissue of the MTX were significantly higher than those of the MTXL and HG groups (p < 0.0001), and the amount of tGSH was lower. The histopathological findings in the MTX group, in which the oxidants and cytokines were higher, were more severe. CONCLUSION Lutein prevented the MTX-induced oxidative lung damage biochemically and histopathologically. This result indicates that lutein may be useful in the treatment of MTX-induced lung damage.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the effect of taxifolin on I/R induced gastric injury in rats using biochemical and histopatholohical methods. METHODS Eighteen albino Wistar male rats equally grouped as; gastric I/R (I/R), 50 mg/kg taxifolin + gastric I/R (TAX+ I/R) and sham operation applied (SHAM). Ischemia induced for 1 hour, and reperfusion induced for 3 hours. RESULTS Oxidant parameters like, Malondialdehyde (MDA) and Hydroxyguanine (8-OHdG) were higher, whereas total glutathione (tGSH) was lower in the I/R group according to SHAM group, histopathological findings such as marked destruction, edema, and proliferated dilated congested blood vessels were observed severely in the I/R group, whereas there was not any pathological finding except mild dilated congested blood vessels in the TAX+ I/R group. CONCLUSION The taxifolin can be clinically beneficial in the treatment of gastric injury due to I/R procedure.

Abstract
Saccharicterpenin is a new green additive agent that is derived from the extract of Theaceae plants and has the ability to improve immunity and meat quality, increase the digestive enzyme activity, and enhance the intestinal development and growth of animals. However, the antioxidant status and systematic changes in metabolic biochemistry associated with saccharicterpenin supplementation in animals are still unknown. This study examined the effects of saccharicterpenin on the antioxidant status and urinary metabolic profile of rats. Sixteen rats were randomly distributed to 2 groups. One group was treated with 400 mg/kg body weight of saccharicterpenin, and the other group was treated with equal amount of saline. Results revealed that saccharicterpenin significantly increased the capacities of anti-hydroxyl radical (13.18%) and anti-superoxide anion (14.36%), the total antioxidant capacity (48.27%), and the activities of total superoxide dismutase (3.68%), catalase (21.52%), glutathione peroxidase (5.83%) and glutathione S-transferase (29.59%) (P < 0.05). By contrast, the contents of malondialdehyde and glutathione were not significantly affected by saccharicterpenin (P > 0.05). Saccharicterpenin supplementation significantly increased the urinary levels of bile acids, ethanol, α-ketoglutarate, and α-hydroxybutyrate but decreased the level of N-acetylglutamate (P < 0.05). In summary, saccharicterpenin can enhance the antioxidant capacity and modulate the metabolism in rats.

Abstract
Objective: Cisplatin is an anticancer drug used for treating childhood solid tumors. Symptoms related to cisplatin-induced cardiovascular adverse effects may be mild or severe. Rutin (vitamin P1) has many properties, including as antioxidant, anticancer, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, antiulcer, and tissue renewal properties. Therefore, we aimed to biochemically, histopathologically, and immunohistochemically demonstrate the effect of rutin on cisplatin-induced cardiotoxicity in rats. Methods: The rats included in our study were divided into four groups: Healthy group (HE), 5-mg/kg cisplatin group (CP), 50 mg/kg rutin+5-mg/kg cisplatin (CR-50), 100-mg/kg rutin+5-mg/kg cisplatin (CR-100) group. Results: CP group administered cisplatin had significantly increased blood, serum, and cardiac tissue malondialdehyde (MDA), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), troponin I, creatine kinase (CK), and CK-MB levels compared to the HE group, whereas there was a significant decrease in the total glutathione (tGSH) levels. Rutin was observed to prevent the increase in MDA, IL-1β, TNF-α, troponin I, CK, and CK-MB levels as well as prevent the decrease in tGSH levels more significantly when administered at a 100-mg/kg dose than at a 50-mg/kg dose. Histopathologically, cardiac necrosis, dilated/congested blood vessels, hemorrhage, polymorphonuclear leukocyte, edema, and cells with pyknotic nuclei were observed in the CP group. Rutin was shown to prevent cisplatin-induced cardiac damage more effectively when used at a100-mg/kg dose than at a 50-mg/kg dose. Conclusion: These results suggest that rutin is useful for preventing cisplatin-related cardiovascular damage

Abstract
The effect of taxifolin on cisplatin-induced oxidative pulmonary damage was investigated biochemically and histopathologically in male albino Wistar rats. There were four groups, with six animals in each group: 50 mg/kg of taxifolin plus 2.5 mg/kg of cisplatin (TC) group, 2.5 mg/kg of cisplatin only (CIS) group, 50 mg/kg of taxifolin only (TG) group, and a healthy control group (HG). In terms of the experimental procedure, the animals in the TC and TG groups were first treated via oral gavage. The CIS and HG groups received distilled water as solvent, respectively. One hour later, the TC and CIS groups received cisplatin at a dose of 2.5 mg/kg (injected intraperitoneally). Taxifolin, cisplatin, and the distilled water were administered at the indicated dose and volume, using the same method daily for 14 d. At the end of this period, the animals were killed with a high dosage of thiopental anaesthesia (50 mg/kg). Blood and lung tissue samples were taken for biochemical (malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase (MPO), total glutathione (tGSH), and 8-hydroxy-2 deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG)) analyses and histopathological examinations. The biochemical and histopathological results in the TC and HG groups were then compared with those in the CIS group. Cisplatin increased the levels of MDA, myeloperoxidase, and 8-OHdG, a marker of oxidative DNA damage, and reduced the amount of tGSH in the lung tissue. Moreover, severe alveolar damage, including oedema and extensive alveolar septal fibrosis, in addition to infiltration of polymorphic nuclear leucocytes and haemorrhagic foci, was observed in the CIS group. These histopathological findings demonstrate that taxifolin provides protection against pulmonary oxidative stress by preventing increases in oxidant parameters and decreases in antioxidants.

Abstract
Alcohol is a severe hepatotoxicant that causes a variety of liver disorders. Rosmarinic acid (RA), a natural phenol, shows some biological activities, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. We investigated the effects of RA (10 mg/kg) against ethanol-induced oxidative damage and hepatotoxicity in rats. Animals received ethanol (4 g/kg, i.g.) and (or) RA (10 mg/kg, i.g.) daily for 4 weeks. At the end of the treatment period, rats were weighed and use for biochemical, molecular, and histopathological examinations. Ethanol increased hepatic lipid peroxidation (P < 0.001) and decreased hepatic levels of reduced glutathione (P < 0.01), catalase (P < 0.05), and superoxide dismutase (P < 0.001) compared with control group. RA prevented the prooxidant and antioxidant imbalance induced by ethanol in liver. Furthermore, RA ameliorated the increased liver mass, serum levels of ALT, AST, LDH, TNF-α, and IL-6 in ethanol group. Necrosis and infiltration of inflammatory cells in liver parenchyma were attenuated by RA treatment. Our findings showed that RA prevents ethanol-induced oxidant/antioxidant imbalance and liver injury in an experimental model of ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity. Therefore, RA may be a good candidate to protect against ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity; this deserves consideration and further examination.

Abstract
Etoricoxib features antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties concomitantly, suggesting that it may be beneficial in testicular ischemia reperfusion (I/R) damage. Our aim is to investigate the effects of etoricoxib on testicular I/R damage induced with torsion-detorsion (TD). The etoricoxib + torsion-detorsion (ETD) groups of animals were given etoricoxib in 50 and 100 mg/kg of body weight (ETD-50 and ETD-100), while the testes torsion-detorsion (TTD) and sham operation rat group (SOG) animals were given single oral doses of distilled water as a solvent. TTD, ETD-50 and ETD-100 groups were subjected to 720° degrees torsion for four hours, and detorsion for four hours. The SOG group was not subjected to this procedure. Biochemical, gene expression and histopathological analyses were carried out on the testicular tissues. The levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase (MPO), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) were significantly higher, and the levels of total glutathione (tGSH) and glutathione reductase (GSHRd) were significantly lower in the TTD group, compared to the ETD-50, ETD-100 and SOG groups. Etoricoxib at a dose of 100 mg/kg better prevented I/R damage than the 50 mg/kg dose. Etoricoxib may be useful in clinical practice in the reduction of I/R damage on testes caused by torsion-detorsion.

Abstract
Purpose: Information is lacking on the protective effects of thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) against hyperglycemia-induced retinopathy in rats. This study investigated the biochemical and histopathological aspects of the effect of TPP on hyperglycemia-induced retinopathy induced by alloxan in rats. Materials and Methods: The rats were separated into a diabetic TPP-administered group (DTPG), a diabetes control group (DCG) and a healthy group (HG). While the DTPG was given TPP, the DCG and HG were administered distilled water as a solvent at the same concentrations. This procedure was repeated daily for 3 months. At the end of this period, all of the rats were euthanized under thiopental sodium anesthesia, and biochemical and histopathological analyses of the ocular retinal tissues were performed. The results of the DTPG were compared with those of the DCG and HG. Results: TPP prevented hyperglycemia by increasing the amount of malondialdehyde and decreasing endogen antioxidants, including total glutathione, glutathione reductase, glutathione S-transferase and superoxide dismutase. In addition, the amounts of the DNA oxidation product 8-hydroxyguanine were significantly lower in the retinas of the DTPG compared to the DCG. In the retinas of the DCG, there was a marked increase in vascular structures and congestion, in addition to edema. In contrast, little vascularization and edema were observed in the DTPG, and there was no congestion. The results suggest that TPP significantly reduced the degree of hyperglycemia-induced retinopathy. Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that TPP may be useful for prophylaxis against diabetic retinopathy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Oxidative stress is one of the major causes of methotrexate induced lung injury (MILI). Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), which occurs naturally in human food, has antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activities. The aim of this study was to research the potential protective role of ALA on MILI in rats. METHODS Twenty one rats were randomly subdivided into three groups: control (group I), methotrexate (MTX) treated (group II), and MTX+ALA treated (group III). Lung injury was performed with a single dose of MTX (20 mg/kg) to groups 2 and 3. On the sixth day, animals in all groups were sacrificed by decapitation and lung tissue and blood samples were removed for histological examination and also measurement the levels of interleukin-1-beta (IL-1β), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), myeloperoxidase (MPO), and sodium potassium-adenosine triphosphatase (Na+/K+ATPase). RESULTS In MTX group tissue GSH, Na+/K+ATPase activities were lower, tissue MDA, MPO and plasma IL-1?, TNF-? were significantly higher than the other groups. Histopathological examination showed that lung injury was less severe in group 2 according to group 3. CONCLUSIONS Oxidative damage of MTX in rat lung is partially reduced when combined with ALA.
