Titanium Oxide Antibacterial Surfaces in Biomedical Devices

Evaluation of the antibacterial effect of titanium dioxide nanoparticles combined with acrylic laminates for functional orthodontic appliances: a randomized controlled clinical trial

BACKGROUND

The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial effect of titanium dioxide nanoparticles incorporated into the acrylic baseplates of the maxillary part of twin block appliances in orthodontic patients during the treatment period.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Twenty-six patients were selected randomly and divided into two groups(n = 13). Test group patients used orthodontic functional appliances containing 1% titanium dioxide nanoparticles in acrylic baseplates. Control group patients used orthodontic functional appliances without titanium dioxide nanoparticles in acrylic baseplates. Swap samples were taken from the palatal gingiva facing the fitting surface of the acrylic component of the maxillary part of a twin block appliance for each patient at five-time intervals (baseline sample, after one, two, four, and six months) and then cultured in blood agar plates to calculate bacterial colony count. The Mann‒Whitney U test and the Friedman test were used to compare data. Bonferroni correction (p value ≤ 0.05) was applied to detect significant differences.

THE RESULTS

showed a decrease in the bacterial colony count in the test group compared to the control group. Pairwise comparisons revealed a statistically significant difference in samples after four- and six-month groups (p values = 0.002 and 0.011, respectively) vs. the one-month test group. A higher statistically significant difference was observed in the six-month group (p-value = 0.037) vs. the baseline group in the control group.

CONCLUSION

The addition of 1% titanium dioxide nanoparticles to acrylic baseplates of orthodontic functional appliances significantly reduced the bacterial colony count under the base plate after at least four months of application.

Versatile Biodegradable Poly(acrylic acid)-Based Hydrogels Infiltrated in Porous Titanium Implants to Improve the Biofunctional Performance

This research work proposes a synergistic approach to improve implants' performance through the use of porous Ti substrates to reduce the mismatch between Young's modulus of Ti (around 110 GPa) and the cortical bone (20-25 GPa), and the application of a biodegradable, acrylic acid-based polymeric coating to reduce bacterial adhesion and proliferation, and to enhance osseointegration. First, porous commercially pure Ti substrates with different porosities and pore size distributions were fabricated by using space-holder techniques to obtain substrates with improved tribomechanical behavior. On the other hand, a new diacrylate cross-linker containing a reduction-sensitive disulfide bond was synthesized to prepare biodegradable poly(acrylic acid)-based hydrogels with 1, 2, and 4% cross-linker. Finally, after the required characterization, both strategies were implemented, and the combination of 4% cross-linked poly(acrylic acid)-based hydrogel infiltrated in 30 vol % porosity, 100-200 μm average pore size, was revealed as an outstanding choice for enhancing implant performance.

Review of Antimicrobial Nanocoatings in Medicine and Dentistry: Mechanisms of Action, Biocompatibility Performance, Safety, and Benefits Compared to Antibiotics

This review discusses topics relevant to the development of antimicrobial nanocoatings and nanoscale surface modifications for medical and dental applications. Nanomaterials have unique properties compared to their micro- and macro-scale counterparts and can be used to reduce or inhibit bacterial growth, surface colonization and biofilm development. Generally, nanocoatings exert their antimicrobial effects through biochemical reactions, production of reactive oxygen species or ionic release, while modified nanotopographies create a physically hostile surface for bacteria, killing cells via biomechanical damage. Nanocoatings may consist of metal nanoparticles including silver, copper, gold, zinc, titanium, and aluminum, while nonmetallic compounds used in nanocoatings may be carbon-based in the form of graphene or carbon nanotubes, or composed of silica or chitosan. Surface nanotopography can be modified by the inclusion of nanoprotrusions or black silicon. Two or more nanomaterials can be combined to form nanocomposites with distinct chemical or physical characteristics, allowing combination of different properties such as antimicrobial activity, biocompatibility, strength, and durability. Despite their wide range of applications in medical engineering, questions have been raised regarding potential toxicity and hazards. Current legal frameworks do not effectively regulate antimicrobial nanocoatings in matters of safety, with open questions remaining about risk analysis and occupational exposure limits not considering coating-based approaches. Bacterial resistance to nanomaterials is also a concern, especially where it may affect wider antimicrobial resistance. Nanocoatings have excellent potential for future use, but safe development of antimicrobials requires careful consideration of the "One Health" agenda, appropriate legislation, and risk assessment.

A. Ali G. Inhibitory effect of Titanium dioxide (Tio2) nanoparticles and their synergistic activity with antibiotics in some types of bacteria

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) were studied as antibacterial agents at different concentrations against clinical and environmental bacterial isolates without UV or photocatalytic activation. Five TiO2 NPs concentrations (20µg/ml,50µg/ml, 100µg/ml,500µg/ml and 1000µg/ml) were studied against 15 bacterial species:10 clinical isolates and 5 environmental isolates) compared with antibiotics Amikacin(AK)and Levloxacin(LEV).Only500µg/ml concentration of TiO2 NPs was active against 7 bacterial isolates (3 clinical and 4 environmental), and 1000µg/ml concentration of TiO2 NPs was effective against 9 isolates (6 clinical and 3 environmental ). These concentrations were mixed with the antibiotics Levloxacin LEV and Amikacin AK to investigate the possibility of synergistic activity against studied bacteria. Bacterial isolate's response or sensitivity to the antibiotic and TiO2 NPs mixture was varied; AK plus 500µg/ml TiO2 NPs concentration showed increased inhibitory activity against 7 isolates (3 clinical, 4 environmental) and 1000µg/ml TiO2 NPs mixed with AK showed increased inhibition activity against one environmental bacterial isolates, where Ak mixed with 500 and Ak plus 1000 µg/ml showed the same effect as the antibiotic alone or less.LEV antibiotic shows no difference in the effect on all 9 bacteria (7 clinical and 2 environmental), while LEV mixed with 500 µg/ml have increased inhibition zones on 4 bacteria (2 clinical, 2 environmental) , and LEV mixed with 1000µg/ml have higher effect than the antibiotic alone on three isolates (2 clinical,1 environmental). Development of a high-speed bioaerosol elimination system for treatment of indoor air

We developed a high-speed filterless airflow multistage photocatalytic elbow aerosol removal system for the treatment of bioaerosols such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Human-generated bioaerosols that diffuse into indoor spaces are 1-10 μm in size, and their selective and rapid treatment can reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection. A high-speed airflow is necessary to treat large volumes of indoor air over a short period. The proposed system can be used to eliminate viruses in aerosols by forcibly depositing aerosols in a high-speed airflow onto a photocatalyst placed inside the system through inertial force and turbulent diffusion. Because the main component of the deposited bioaerosol is water, it evaporates after colliding with the photocatalyst, and the nonvolatile virus remains on the photocatalytic channel wall. The residual virus on the photocatalytic channel wall is mineralized via photocatalytic oxidation with UVA-LED irradiation in the channel. When this system was operated in a 4.5 m³ aerosol chamber, over 99.8% aerosols in the size range of 1-10 μm were removed within 15 min. The system continued delivering such performance with the continuous introduction of aerosols. Because this system exhibits excellent aerosol removal ability at a flow velocity of 5 m/s or higher, it is more suitable than other reactive air purification systems for treating large-volume spaces.

Strategies to Mitigate and Treat Orthopaedic Device-Associated Infections

Orthopaedic device implants play a crucial role in restoring functionality to patients suffering from debilitating musculoskeletal diseases or to those who have experienced traumatic injury. However, the surgical implantation of these devices carries a risk of infection, which represents a significant burden for patients and healthcare providers. This review delineates the pathogenesis of orthopaedic implant infections and the challenges that arise due to biofilm formation and the implications for treatment. It focuses on research advancements in the development of next-generation orthopaedic medical devices to mitigate against implant-related infections. Key considerations impacting the development of devices, which must often perform multiple biological and mechanical roles, are delineated. We review technologies designed to exert spatial and temporal control over antimicrobial presentation and the use of antimicrobial surfaces with intrinsic antibacterial activity. A range of measures to control bio-interfacial interactions including approaches that modify implant surface chemistry or topography to reduce the capacity of bacteria to colonise the surface, form biofilms and cause infections at the device interface and surrounding tissues are also reviewed.

ZnO-based antimicrobial coatings for biomedical applications

Rapid transmission of infectious microorganisms such as viruses and bacteria through person-to-person contact has contributed significantly to global health issues. The high survivability of these microorganisms on the material surface enumerates their transmissibility to the susceptible patient. The antimicrobial coating has emerged as one of the most interesting technologies to prevent growth and subsequently kill disease-causing microorganisms. It offers an effective solution a non-invasive, low-cost, easy-in-use, side-effect-free, and environmentally friendly method to prevent nosocomial infection. Among antimicrobial coating, zinc oxide (ZnO) stands as one of the excellent materials owing to zero toxicity, high biocompatibility to human organs, good stability, high abundancy, affordability, and high photocatalytic performance to kill various infectious pathogens. Therefore, this review provides the latest research progress on advanced applications of ZnO nanostructure-based antibacterial coatings for medical devices, biomedical applications, and health care facilities. Finally, future challenges and clinical practices of ZnO-based antibacterial coating are addressed.

A Review on Green Synthesis of TiO2 NPs: Synthesis and Applications in Photocatalysis and Antimicrobial

Nanotechnology is a fast-expanding area with a wide range of applications in science, engineering, health, pharmacy, and other fields. Nanoparticles (NPs) are frequently prepared via a variety of physical and chemical processes. Simpler, sustainable, and cost-effective green synthesis technologies have recently been developed. The synthesis of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂ NPs) in a green/sustainable manner has gotten a lot of interest in the previous quarter. Bioactive components present in organisms such as plants and bacteria facilitate the bio-reduction and capping processes. The biogenic synthesis of TiO₂ NPs, as well as the different synthesis methods and mechanistic perspectives, are discussed in this review. A range of natural reducing agents including proteins, enzymes, phytochemicals, and others, are involved in the synthesis of TiO₂ NPs. The physics of antibacterial and photocatalysis applications were also thoroughly discussed. Finally, we provide an overview of current research and future concerns in biologically mediated TiO₂ nanostructures-based feasible platforms for industrial applications.

Synergistic Effects Between Metal Nanoparticles and Commercial Antimicrobial Agents: A Review

Nanotechnology has expanded into a broad range of clinical applications. In particular, metal nanoparticles (MNPs) display unique antimicrobial properties, a fundamental function of novel medical devices. The combination of MNPs with commercial antimicrobial drugs (e.g., antibiotics, antifungals, and antivirals) may offer several opportunities to overcome some disadvantages of their individual use and enhance effectiveness. MNP conjugates display multiple advantages. As drug delivery systems, the conjugates can extend the circulation of the drugs in the body, facilitate intercellular targeting, improve drug stabilization, and possess superior delivery. Concomitantly, they reduce the required drug dose, minimize toxicity, and broaden the antimicrobial spectrum. In this work, the common strategies to combine MNPs with clinically used antimicrobial agents are underscored. Furthermore, a comprehensive survey about synergistic antimicrobial effects, the mechanism of action, and cytotoxicity is depicted.

Surface Modification of Titanium by Femtosecond Laser in Reducing Bacterial Colonization

In the past few decades, titanium and its alloys have been widely used in the orthopaedic field. However, because titanium is bioinert and lacks antibacterial properties, infection may happen when bacteria attach to implant surfaces and form biofilms. It has been studied that some naturally existing micron-scale topographies can reduce bacterial attachment such as cicada wings and gecko skins. The aim of this in vitro study was to find an implant with good biocompatibility and antimicrobial properties by the modification of micron-scale topographies. In this paper, a femtosecond laser was used to provide microtopography coatings on Ti substrates. The surface morphology of Ti substrates was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XPS was used to fulfil the chemical compositional analysis. The surface wettability was measured by contact angle measurement system. The effect of microtopography coatings with different surface microstructures on bacterial activities and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSC) functions was investigated. The results of in vitro study revealed that microtopography coatings restrain the adhesion of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis), which are common pathogens of orthopaedic implant infections. In addition, microtopography coatings stimulated BMSC adhesion and proliferation. Our studies suggest that a microtopography-coated sample modified by femtosecond laser showed promising antibacterial properties and favourable biocompatibility. The femtosecond laser technique provides an accurate and valid way to produce microtopography coatings with outstanding biocompatibility and antimicrobial properties, and could be widely used to modify the surface of orthopaedic metal implants with great potential.

Recent Advancements in Plant-Derived Nanomaterials Research for Biomedical Applications

Engineering, physics, chemistry, and biology are all involved in nanotechnology, which comprises a wide variety of multidisciplinary scientific field devices. The holistic utilization of metallic nanoparticles in the disciplines of bio-engineering and bio-medicine has attracted a great deal of attention. Medical nanotechnology research can offer immense health benefits for humans. While the advantages of developing nanomaterials have been well documented, it is precisely apparent that there are still some major issues that remain unattended to those need to be resolved immediately so as to ensure that they do not adversely affect living organisms in any manner. The existence of nanoparticles gives them particular value in biology and materials science, as an emerging scientific field, with multiple applications in science and technology, especially with numerous frontiers in the development of new materials. Presented here is a review of recent noteworthy developments regarding plant-derived nanomaterials and their use in the development of medicine and biomedical applications around the world.

Antimicrobial Efficacy of Titanium Dioxide Coating in Operating Theaters at A Tertiary Care Hospital in Arunachal Pradesh

SmartCoat is a novel technology with titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles, isopropyl alcohol, and distilled water as the active ingredients. TiO2, along with water and oxygen, generates highly reactive OH radicals that can neutralize bacteria and other microorganisms and remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Smart coat requires air circulation and a light source for its catalytic activity. The efficacy of TiO2 in industrial setups and dental devices has been documented. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of TiO2 in preventing microbial growth in an operating theater (OT) where maximum sterility is desired to prevent sepsis and nosocomial infections. Among the four operating theaters, two were selected. Periodic swab samples taken over a period of nine months from OT 3 (Smart coated) and OT 4 (Control) showed minimal variations in terms of microbial growth in the processed swabs. The findings were statistically analyzed using a paired-sample t-test. The computed value of ‘t’ i.e., 2.084 was lower than the critical value of 3.18 at 3 deg of freedom (df) and hence was not significant. The null hypothesis cannot be rejected (p=0.129>0.05) at the 5% level of significance. SmartCoat with TiO2 was not effective in preventing microbial growth on biomedical devices in the OT. The product may not be suitable for operating theaters unless it is supplemented by other sterilization procedures. However, it can be used in other healthcare settings and in public places.

Physically Switchable Antimicrobial Surfaces and Coatings: General Concept and Recent Achievements

Bacterial environmental colonization and subsequent biofilm formation on surfaces represents a significant and alarming problem in various fields, ranging from contamination of medical devices up to safe food packaging. Therefore, the development of surfaces resistant to bacterial colonization is a challenging and actively solved task. In this field, the current promising direction is the design and creation of nanostructured smart surfaces with on-demand activated amicrobial protection. Various surface activation methods have been described recently. In this review article, we focused on the "physical" activation of nanostructured surfaces. In the first part of the review, we briefly describe the basic principles and common approaches of external stimulus application and surface activation, including the temperature-, light-, electric- or magnetic-field-based surface triggering, as well as mechanically induced surface antimicrobial protection. In the latter part, the recent achievements in the field of smart antimicrobial surfaces with physical activation are discussed, with special attention on multiresponsive or multifunctional physically activated coatings. In particular, we mainly discussed the multistimuli surface triggering, which ensures a better degree of surface properties control, as well as simultaneous utilization of several strategies for surface protection, based on a principally different mechanism of antimicrobial action. We also mentioned several recent trends, including the development of the to-detect and to-kill hybrid approach, which ensures the surface activation in a right place at a right time.

Effects of nano metal oxide particles on activated sludge system: Stress and performance recovery mechanism

Nano metal oxide particles (NMOPs) are widely used in daily life because of their superior performance, and inevitably enter the sewage treatment system. Pollutants in sewage are adsorbed and degraded in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) depending on the microbial aggregates of activated sludge system to achieve sewage purification. NMOPs may cause ecotoxicity to the microbial community and metabolism due to their complex chemical behavior, resulting in a potential threat to the safe and steady operation of activated sludge system. It is of great significance to clarify the influencing mechanism of NMOPs on activated sludge system and reduce the risk of WWTPs. Herein, we first introduce the physicochemical behavior of six typical engineering NMOPs including ZnO, TiO₂, CuO, CeO₂, MgO, and MnO₂ in water environment, then highlight the principal mechanisms of NMOPs for activated sludge system. In particular, the performance recovery mechanisms of activated sludge systems in the presence of NMOPs and their future development trends are well documented and discussed extensively. This review can provide a theoretical guidance and technical support for predicting and evaluating the potential threat of NMOPs on activated sludge systems, and promoting the establishment of effective control strategies and performance recovery measures of biological wastewater treatment process under the stress of NMOPs.

PEEK vs Titanium Cage for Anterior Column Reconstruction in Active Spinal Tuberculosis: A Comparative Study

Background

Posterolateral decompression and debridement in patients with TB spine led to defect in the anterior column which makes the spinal column unstable, thus making anterior column reconstruction an important step in surgical management.

Objective

Through the study, authors sought to answer the following questions: 1) What are the differences in clinical outcomes between patients with TB spine undergoing anterior column reconstruction using titanium mesh cage versus PEEK cage? 2) What are the differences in radiological outcomes between these two groups of patients?

Methods

This is a retrospective comparative study including patients with TB spine undergoing surgical management. The included subjects were divided into groups A and B depending on the implantation of PEEK or titanium mesh cage respectively for anterior column reconstruction. Outcome criteria analyzed included clinical criteria like VAS and ODI scores, radiological criteria like kyphosis correction, loss of kyphosis at follow-up, cage subsidence, and bony fusion on a 2D CT scan.

Results

The study population included 14 patients in Group A and 15 patients in Group B. Improvement in VAS and ODI scores was comparable between groups. There was no significant difference in radiological outcome measures between the two groups, however, two patients from group B showed implant-related complications needing revision. All patients showed good bony fusion at the final follow-up.

Conclusion

PEEK and titanium cages have comparable clinico-radiological outcomes for anterior column reconstruction in patients with active TB spine. Its advantages for being radiolucent and its ease of use may make it a choice of implant.

The prospects of antimicrobial coated medical implants

The implants are increasingly being a part of modern medicine in various surgical procedures for functional or cosmetic purposes. The progressive use of implants is associated with increased infectious complications and prevention of such infections always remains precedence in the clinical settings. The preventive approaches include the systemic administration of antimicrobial agents before and after the surgical procedures as well as the local application of antibiotics. The relevant literature and existing clinical practices have highlighted the role of antimicrobial coating approaches in the prevention of implants associated infections, although the applications of these strategies are not yet standardized, and the clinical efficacy is not much clear. The adequate data from the randomized control trials is challenging because of the unavailability of a large sample size although it is compulsory in this context to assess the clinical efficacy of preemptive practices. This review compares the efficacy of preventive approaches and the prospects of antimicrobial-coated implants in preventing implant-related infections.

Are photocatalytic processes effective for removal of airborne viruses from indoor air? A narrative review

A wide variety of methods have been applied in indoor air to reduce the microbial load and reduce the transmission rate of acute respiratory diseases to personnel in healthcare sittings. In recent months, with the occurrence of COVID-19 pandemic, the role of portable ventilation systems in reducing the load of virus in indoor air has received much attention. The present study delineates a comprehensive up-to-date overview of the available photocatalysis technologies that have been applied for inactivating and removing airborne viruses. The detection methods for identifying viral particles in air and the main mechanisms involving in virus inactivation during photocatalysis are described and discussed. The photocatalytic processes could effectively decrease the load of viruses in indoor air. However, a constant viral model may not be generalizable to other airborne viruses. In photocatalytic processes, temperature and humidity play a distinct role in the inactivation of viruses through changing photocatalytic rate. The main mechanisms for inactivation of airborne viruses in the photocatalytic processes included chemical oxidation by the reactive oxygen species (ROS), the toxicity of metal ions released from metal-containing photocatalysts, and morphological damage of viruses.

Functionalized Mesoporous Thin Films for Biotechnology

Mesoporous materials bear great potential for biotechnological applications due to their biocompatibility and versatility. Their high surface area and pore interconnection allow the immobilization of molecules and their subsequent controlled delivery. Modifications of the mesoporous material with the addition of different chemical species, make them particularly suitable for the production of bioactive coatings. Functionalized thin films of mesoporous silica and titania can be used as scaffolds with properties as diverse as promotion of cell growth, inhibition of biofilms formation, or development of sensors based on immobilized enzymes. The possibility to pattern them increase their appeal as they can be incorporated into devices and can be tailored both with respect to architecture and functionalization. In fact, selective surface manipulation is the ground for the fabrication of advanced micro devices that combine standard micro/nanofluids with functional materials. In this review, we will present the advantages of the functionalization of silica and titania mesoporous materials deposited in thin film. Different functional groups used to modify their properties will be summarized, as well as functionalization methods and some examples of applications of modified materials, thus giving an overview of the essential role of functionalization to improve the performance of such innovative materials.

Cellular and Molecular Dynamics during Early Oral Osseointegration: A Comprehensive Characterization in the Lewis Rat

OBJECTIVE

There is a need to improve the predictability of osseointegration in implant dentistry. Current literature uses a variety of in vivo titanium (Ti) implantation models to investigate failure modes and test new materials and surfaces. However, these models produce a variety of results, making comparison across studies difficult. The purpose of this study is to validate an oral osseointegration in the Lewis rat to provide a reproducible baseline to track the inflammatory response and healing of Ti implants.

METHODS

Ti screws (0.76 mm Ø × 2 mm length) were implanted into the maxillary diastema of 52 adult male Lewis rats. Peri-implant tissues were evaluated 2, 7, 14, and 30 days after implantation (n = 13). Seven of the 13 samples underwent microtomographic analysis, histology, histomorphometry, and immunohistochemistry to track healing parameters. The remaining six samples underwent quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) to evaluate gene expression of inflammation and bone remodeling markers over time.

RESULTS

This model achieved a 78.5% success rate. Successful implants had a bone to implant contact (BIC)% of 68.86 ± 3.15 at 30 days on average. Histologically, healing was similar to other rodent models: hematoma and acute inflammation at 2 days, initial bone formation at 7, advanced bone formation and remodeling at 14, and bone maturation at 30. qPCR indicated the highest expression of bone remodeling and inflammatory markers 2-7 days, before slowly declining to nonsurgery control levels at 14-30 days.

CONCLUSION

This model combines cost-effectiveness and simplicity of a rodent model, while maximizing BIC, making it an excellent candidate for evaluation of new surfaces.

Additive manufacturing of Ti6Al4V alloy via electron beam melting for the development of implants for the biomedical industry

Additive Manufacturing (AM) or rapid prototyping technologies are presented as one of the best options to produce customized prostheses and implants with high-level requirements in terms of complex geometries, mechanical properties, and short production times. The AM method that has been more investigated to obtain metallic implants for medical and biomedical use is Electron Beam Melting (EBM), which is based on the powder bed fusion technique. One of the most common metals employed to manufacture medical implants is titanium. Although discovered in 1790, titanium and its alloys only started to be used as engineering materials for biomedical prostheses after the 1950s. In the biomedical field, these materials have been mainly employed to facilitate bone adhesion and fixation, as well as for joint replacement surgeries, thanks to their good chemical, mechanical, and biocompatibility properties. Therefore, this study aims to collect relevant and up-to-date information from an exhaustive literature review on EBM and its applications in the medical and biomedical fields. This AM method has become increasingly popular in the manufacturing sector due to its great versatility and geometry control.

Surface Chemistry, Crystal Structure, Size and Topography Role in the Albumin Adsorption Process on TiO2 Anatase Crystallographic Faces and Its 3D-Nanocrystal: A Molecular Dynamics Study

TiO2 is widely used in biomaterial implants. The topography, chemical and structural properties of titania surfaces are an important aspect to study. The size of TiO2 nanoparticles synthetized by sol–gel method can influence the responses in the biological environment, and by using appropriate heat treatments different contents of different polymorphs can be formed. Protein adsorption is a crucial step for the biological responses, involving, in particular, albumin, the most abundant blood protein. In this theoretical work, using molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics methods, the adsorption process of an albumin subdomain is reported both onto specific different crystallographic faces of TiO2 anatase and also on its ideal three-dimensional nanosized crystal, using the simulation protocol proposed in my previous theoretical studies about the adsorption process on hydrophobic ordered graphene-like or hydrophilic amorphous polymeric surfaces. The different surface chemistry of anatase crystalline faces and the nanocrystal topography influence the adsorption process, in particular the interaction strength and protein fragment conformation, then its biological activity. This theoretical study can be a useful tool to better understand how the surface chemistry, crystal structure, size and topography play a key role in protein adsorption process onto anatase surface so widely used as biomaterial.

Understanding the structure, bonding and reactions of nanocrystalline semiconductors: a novel high-resolution instrumental method of solid-state synchronous luminescence spectroscopy

This Perspective Article describes the recent advancements in studies of nanocrystalline metal oxides using a novel ultra-high resolution method, solid-state synchronous luminescence spectroscopy (SS-SLS). Semiconductors notably include titanium dioxide and these studies shed light on the detailed electronic structure, composition, and their reactions. First, we critically discuss the limitations of the major existing non-spectroscopic and spectroscopic methods of characterization of electronic structure of nanocrystalline semiconductors and insulators. Second, we describe the foundations and the setup of SS-SLS as an enhanced-resolution, facile, non-contact, non-destructive, and highly capable method of studies of nanomaterials. Third, the following insights are featured which are obtained by SS-SLS, but are not available by other methods: (a) detection of traps of electric charge (specific mid-gap states); (b) discrimination between "surface" and "bulk" sites; (c) in situ studies of composite nanomaterials and mechanisms of reactions, (d) the derivative SS-SLS for accurate determination of energies of absorption and emission. The specific advantages of SS-SLS versus other methods and in direct comparison with "conventional" photoluminescence spectroscopy are highlighted. Finally, new opportunities and challenges of SS-SLS are presented. SS-SLS is an advanced spectroscopic method with significant potential to aid academia and industry in studies of chemo-sensing, photocatalysis, optoelectronic materials, applied surface science, development of instrumental analysis, and studies of mechanisms of surface and "bulk" chemical reactions.

Effect of UV Irradiation and TiO2-Photocatalysis on Airborne Bacteria and Viruses: An Overview

Current COVID-19 pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has put a spotlight on the spread of infectious diseases brought on by pathogenic airborne bacteria and viruses. In parallel with a relentless search for therapeutics and vaccines, considerable effort is being expended to develop ever more powerful technologies to restricting the spread of airborne microorganisms in indoor spaces through the minimization of health- and environment-related risks. In this context, UV-based and photocatalytic oxidation (PCO)-based technologies (i.e., the combined action of ultraviolet (UV) light and photocatalytic materials such as titanium dioxide (TiO2)) represent the most widely utilized approaches at present because they are cost-effective and ecofriendly. The virucidal and bactericidal effect relies on the synergy between the inherent ability of UV light to directly inactivate viral particles and bacteria through nucleic acid and protein damages, and the production of oxidative radicals generated through the irradiation of the TiO2 surface. In this literature survey, we draw attention to the most effective UV radiations and TiO2-based PCO technologies available and their underlying mechanisms of action on both bacteria and viral particles. Since the fine tuning of different parameters, namely the UV wavelength, the photocatalyst composition, and the UV dose (viz, the product of UV light intensity and the irradiation time), is required for the inactivation of microorganisms, we wrap up this review coming up with the most effective combination of them. Now more than ever, UV- and TiO2-based disinfection technologies may represent a valuable tool to mitigate the spread of airborne pathogens.

A review: non-antibacterial, non-antifungal and non-anticancer properties of nanoparticles the forgotten paradigm

The review highlights the need of non-antibacterial, non-antifungal and non-anticancer characters of metal or metal oxide nanoparticles. The usage of nanoparticles as a part of therapeutic measures results in certain unfavourable effects. The nanoparticles can disturb healthy gut microorganisms that may bring about some health damages regarding pathogenic diseases, obesity, and inflammation likewise. Even the nonspecific interactions of nanoparticles with healthy cells and tissues can cause altered expressions of various pro-inflammatory factors and stress related genes. This review indicates and prospect about the demand of nanoparticles with non-antibacterial, non-antifungal and non-anticancer properties. Such nanoparticles will be effective in various remedial and diagnostic purposes.

Green biomimetic synthesis of Ag-TiO2 nanocomposite using Origanum majorana leaf extract under sonication and their biological activities

BACKGROUND

Studies of plant extract-mediated synthesis of nanoparticles is extensively explored and studied in recent time due to eco-friendly, cost-effectiveness and minimal use of toxic chemicals for synthesis. In this study, the synthesis of Ag-TiO2 nanocomposites (NCs) was carried out using Origanum majorana leaf extract under ultrasound irradiation. Origanum majorana leaf extract plays an important role as reducing and capping agent in synthesis of Ag-TiO2 nanocomposites (NCs). The antimicrobial activities of synthesised Ag-TiO2 NCs have been studied against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. In addition to this, the antioxidant activity of green Ag-TiO2 NCs was also evaluated on the basis of free radical scavenging activity against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), and hydrogen peroxide free radicals.

RESULTS

Green-synthesised Ag-TiO2 NCs were successfully characterised on the basis of UV-Vis spectrophotometer, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results revealed the spherical shape of nanocomposite with an average size 25-50 nm. The synthesised Ag-TiO2 NCs have showed significant antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Aspergillus niger in comparison to TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs). The antioxidant evaluation of biomimetic synthesised Ag-TiO2 NCs also exhibited strong activity than TiO2 NPs and comparable to standard.

CONCLUSION

Green-synthesized Ag-TiO2 NCs provide a promising approach that can satisfy the requirement of large-scale industrial production bearing the advantage of low cost, eco-friendly and reproducible.

Inactivation of Human Coronavirus by Titania Nanoparticle Coatings and UVC Radiation: Throwing Light on SARS-CoV-2

The newly identified pathogenic human coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, led to an atypical pneumonia-like severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak called coronavirus disease 2019 (abbreviated as COVID-19). Currently, nearly 77 million cases have been confirmed worldwide with the highest numbers of COVID-19 cases in the United States. Individuals are getting vaccinated with recently approved vaccines, which are highly protective in suppressing COVID-19 symptoms but there will be a long way before the majority of individuals get vaccinated. In the meantime, safety precautions and effective disease control strategies appear to be vital for preventing the virus spread in public places. Due to the longevity of the virus on smooth surfaces, photocatalytic properties of "self-disinfecting/cleaning" surfaces appear to be a promising tool to help guide disinfection policies for controlling SARS-CoV-2 spread in high-traffic areas such as hospitals, grocery stores, airports, schools, and stadiums. Here, we explored the photocatalytic properties of nanosized TiO₂ (TNPs) as induced by the UV radiation, towards virus deactivation. Our preliminary results using a close genetic relative of SAR-CoV-2, HCoV-NL63, showed the virucidal efficacy of photoactive TNPs deposited on glass coverslips, as examined by quantitative RT-qPCR and virus infectivity assays. Efforts to extrapolate the underlying concepts described in this study to SARS-CoV-2 are currently underway.

Current Challenges and Innovative Developments in Hydroxyapatite-Based Coatings on Metallic Materials for Bone Implantation: A Review

Biomaterials are in use for the replacement and reconstruction of several tissues and organs as treatment and enhancement. Metallic, organic, and composites are some of the common materials currently in practice. Metallic materials contribute a big share of their mechanical strength and resistance to corrosion properties, while organic polymeric materials stand high due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and natural availability. To enhance the biocompatibility of these metals and alloys, coatings are frequently applied. Organic polymeric materials and ceramics are extensively utilized for this purpose due to their outstanding characteristics of biocompatibility and biodegradability. Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is the material from the ceramic class which is an ultimate candidate for coating on these metals for biomedical applications. HAp possesses similar chemical and structural characteristics to normal human bone. Due to the bioactivity and biocompatibility of HAp, it is used for bone implants for regenerating bone tissues. This review covers an extensive study of the development of HAp coatings specifically for the orthopaedic applications that include different coating techniques and the process parameters of these coating techniques. Additionally, the future direction and challenges have been also discussed briefly in this review, including the coating of HAp in combination with other calcium magnesium phosphates that occur naturally in human bone.

Polyetheretherketone and Its Composites for Bone Replacement and Regeneration

In this article, recent advances in the development, preparation, biocompatibility and mechanical properties of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and its composites for hard and soft tissue engineering are reviewed. PEEK has been widely employed for fabricating spinal fusions due to its radiolucency, chemical stability and superior sterilization resistance at high temperatures. PEEK can also be tailored into patient-specific implants for treating orbital and craniofacial defects in combination with additive manufacturing process. However, PEEK is bioinert, lacking osseointegration after implantation. Accordingly, several approaches including surface roughening, thin film coating technology, and addition of bioactive hydroxyapatite (HA) micro-/nanofillers have been adopted to improve osseointegration performance. The elastic modulus of PEEK is 3.7-4.0 GPa, being considerably lower than that of human cortical bone ranging from 7-30 GPa. Thus, PEEK is not stiff enough to sustain applied stress in load-bearing orthopedic implants. Therefore, HA micro-/nanofillers, continuous and discontinuous carbon fibers are incorporated into PEEK for enhancing its stiffness for load-bearing applications. Among these, carbon fibers are more effective than HA micro-/nanofillers in providing additional stiffness and load-bearing capabilities. In particular, the tensile properties of PEEK composite with 30wt% short carbon fibers resemble those of cortical bone. Hydrophobic PEEK shows no degradation behavior, thus hampering its use for making porous bone scaffolds. PEEK can be blended with hydrophilic polymers such as polyglycolic acid and polyvinyl alcohol to produce biodegradable scaffolds for bone tissue engineering applications.

Formation of carbon-added anatase-rich TiO2 layers on titanium and their antibacterial properties in visible light

OBJECTIVE

To avoid risk of infections associated with dental implants, thermal oxidation processes for practical dental Ti alloys were studied for both high bonding strength and antibacterial properties in visible light.

METHODS

Two-step thermal oxidation, comprising carburization (first step of treatment: in Ar-1%CO gas) and subsequent oxidation (second step of treatment: in air), was conducted on commercially pure (CP) Ti, Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64), and Ti-6Al-7Nb (Ti67) alloys to form TiO₂ layers. Their bonding strengths and antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli (E. coli) in visible light (λ ≥ 400 nm) were evaluated.

RESULTS

TiO₂ layers formed on each metal were composed of anatase and/or rutile. Anatase fraction and carbon concentration in the layers decreased with increasing temperature in the second step of treatment. Antibacterial properties of the TiO₂ layers were dependent on the temperature in the second step of treatment. An approximate antibacterial activity value of 2 (killing ∼99% bacteria) was obtained when the temperatures in the second step of treatment were 673 and 773 K for CP Ti, 773 K for Ti64, and 773 and 873 K for Ti67. It was found that the TiO₂ layer must contain carbon and be anatase-rich to exhibit excellent antibacterial properties. Bonding strength between the substrate and TiO₂ layers formed at 773 K in the second step of treatment exceeded 80 MPa and was independent of substrate type.

SIGNIFICANCE

TiO₂ layers, possessing both high bonding strength and excellent antibacterial properties, were successfully formed on practical dental Ti alloys via two-step thermal oxidation.

Effects of TiO2-Coated Stainless Steel Orthodontic Wires on Streptococcus mutans Bacteria: A Clinical Study

Introduction

The aim of this study was to clinically evaluate Streptococcus mutans adhesion on titanium dioxide–coated stainless steel orthodontic wires to decrease white-spot formation.

Methods

In this study, four groups of 17 patients each (n=68) aged 12–25 years participated. A titanium dioxide coating layer was deposited on 0.4572 mm stainless steel orthodontic wires using physical vapor deposition. The coated wires were randomly assigned to one jaw, and the opposite jaw received an uncoated wire as control. Patients were divided into groups according to the duration that wires were in their mouths: A) 1 week, B) 2 weeks, C) 3 weeks, and D) 4 weeks. Block randomization was used to assign patients to each group. At the end of the experiment, 20 mm of each wire (canine-to-canine area) was cut and cultured in S. mutans–specific medium. The culture plates were placed in an incubator containing 5% CO₂ for 72 hours at 37°C, and then colonies were counted. MTT was used to test the biocompatibility of the coated and uncoated wires. To evaluate the stability of the coated titanium dioxide layer on the wires, titanium concentration on the saliva was determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy.

Results

The Kruskal–Wallis test showed that there was no significant difference in colony counts among the coated wires during 1–4 weeks (p<0.48). In the uncoated-wire groups, colonys count at week 1 were higher than weeks 24 –(p<0.022). Wilcoxon’s test showed that the number of colonies was significantly different in groups A and C, but there was no significant difference in groups B or D. MTT-assay results showed that there was not a significant difference between cell viability in the coated-wire group and the control. The Kruskal–Wallis test showed that there was no significant difference in titanium concentration in the studied groups (p<0.834).

Conclusion

Application of titanium dioxide coating is effective in reducing bacterial adhesion at wire insertion.

Materials for Orthopedic Bioimplants: Modulating Degradation and Surface Modification Using Integrated Nanomaterials

Significant research and development in the field of biomedical implants has evoked the scope to treat a broad range of orthopedic ailments that include fracture fixation, total bone replacement, joint arthrodesis, dental screws, and others. Importantly, the success of a bioimplant depends not only upon its bulk properties, but also on its surface properties that influence its interaction with the host tissue. Various approaches of surface modification such as coating of nanomaterial have been employed to enhance antibacterial activities of a bioimplant. The modified surface facilitates directed modulation of the host cellular behavior and grafting of cell-binding peptides, extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, and growth factors to further improve host acceptance of a bioimplant. These strategies showed promising results in orthopedics, e.g., improved bone repair and regeneration. However, the choice of materials, especially considering their degradation behavior and surface properties, plays a key role in long-term reliability and performance of bioimplants. Metallic biomaterials have evolved largely in terms of their bulk and surface properties including nano-structuring with nanomaterials to meet the requirements of new generation orthopedic bioimplants. In this review, we have discussed metals and metal alloys commonly used for manufacturing different orthopedic bioimplants and the biotic as well as abiotic factors affecting the failure and degradation of those bioimplants. The review also highlights the currently available nanomaterial-based surface modification technologies to augment the function and performance of these metallic bioimplants in a clinical setting.

Investigation of the early healing response to dicationic imidazolium-based ionic liquids: a biocompatible coating for titanium implants

Dicationic Imidazolum-based ionic liquids with amino acid anions (IonL) have been proposed as a multifunctional coating for titanium dental implants, as their properties have been shown to address multiple early complicating factors while maintaining host cell compatibility. This study aims to evaluate effects of this coating on host response in the absence of complicating oral factors during the early healing period using a subcutaneous implantation model in the rat. IonLs with the best cytocompatibility and antimicrobial properties (IonL-Phe, IonL-Met) were chosen as coatings. Three different doses were applied to cpTi disks and subcutaneously implanted into 36 male Lewis rats. Rats received 2 implants: 1 coated implant on one side and an uncoated implant on the contralateral sides (n=3 per formulation, per dose). Peri-implant tissue was evaluated 2 and 14 days after implantation with H&E staining and IHC markers associated with macrophage polarization as well as molecular analysis (qPCR) for inflammatory and healing markers. H&E stains revealed the presence of the coating, blood clots and inflammatory infiltrate at 2 days around all implants. At 14 days, inflammation had receded with more developed connective tissue with fibroblasts, blood vessels in certain doses of coated and uncoated samples with no foreign body giant cells. This study demonstrated that IonL at the appropriate concentration does not significantly interfere with and healing and Ti foreign body response. Results regarding optimal dose and formulation from this study will be applied in future studies using an oral osseointegration model.

Optimisation of preparation conditions for Ti nanowires and suitability as an antibacterial material

Ultrafine titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanowires were synthesised using a hydrothermal method with different volumes of ethylene glycol (EG) and annealing temperatures. It shows that sodium titanate nanowires synthesised using 5 and 10 ml EG, which annealed at 400°C produced TiO₂ nanowires that correspond to a photochemically active phase, which is anatase. The influences of annealing temperatures (400-600°C) on the morphological arrangement of TiO₂ nanowires were evident in the field emission scanning electron microscopy. The annealing temperature of 500°C led to agglomeration, which formed a mixture of TiO₂ nanoparticles and nanowires. High thermal stability of TiO₂ nanowires revealed by thermogravimetric analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectrum showed the presence of the Ti-O-Ti vibrations as evidenced due to TiO₂ lattices. An antibacterial study using TiO₂ nanowires toward Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae showed large zones of inhibition that indicated susceptibility of the microbe toward TiO₂. Growth kinetic analysis shows that addition of TiO₂ has reduced optical density (OD) suggesting an inhibition of the growth of bacteria. These results indicate TiO₂ nanowires can be effectively used as an antimicrobial agent against gram-bacteria. The TiO₂ nanowires could be exploited in the medical, packaging and detergent formulation industries and wastewater treatment.

The Influence of Surface Wettability and Topography on the Bioactivity of TiO2/Epoxy Coatings on AISI 316L Stainless Steel

Epoxy/TiO₂/epoxy and epoxy/FAS-TiO₂/epoxy coatings were applied to the surface of AISI 316L stainless steel with the aim to improve the biocompatibility and antibacterial properties. Contact-angle measurements were used to evaluate the wetting properties of the epoxy, epoxy/TiO₂/epoxy and epoxy/FAS-TiO₂/epoxy coatings. The epoxy and epoxy/TiO₂/epoxy coatings were hydrophilic compared with the strongly hydrophobic epoxy/FAS-TiO₂/epoxy coating. The average surface roughness (S_a) of the epoxy/FAS-TiO₂/epoxy coating was higher than that of the epoxy/TiO₂/epoxy coating due to the formation of agglomerates. The biocompatibility evaluation revealed that the cell attachment was significantly higher on the epoxy/FAS-TiO₂/epoxy and epoxy/TiO₂/epoxy coatings compared with the pure epoxy coating. We also observed improved antibacterial properties for the epoxy coatings with the addition of both TiO₂ and FAS-TiO₂ nanoparticles.

New Materials Based on Cationic Porphyrins Conjugated to Chitosan or Titanium Dioxide: Synthesis, Characterization and Antimicrobial Efficacy

The post-functionalization of 5,10,15-tris(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl)-20-(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin tri-iodide, known as a highly efficient photosensitizer (PS) for antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT), in the presence of 3- or 4-mercaptobenzoic acid, afforded two new tricationic porphyrins with adequate carboxylic pending groups to be immobilized on chitosan or titanium oxide. The structural characterization of the newly obtained materials confirmed the success of the porphyrin immobilization on the solid supports. The photophysical properties and the antimicrobial photodynamic efficacy of the non-immobilized porphyrins and of the new conjugates were evaluated. The results showed that the position of the carboxyl group in the mercapto units or the absence of these substituents in the porphyrin core could modulate the action of the photosensitizer towards the bioluminescent Gram-negative Escherichia coli bacterium. The antimicrobial activity was also influenced by the interaction between the photosensitizer and the type of support (chitosan or titanium dioxide). The new cationic porphyrins and some of the materials were shown to be very stable in PBS and effective in the photoinactivation of E. coli bacterium. The physicochemical properties of TiO2 allowed the interaction of the PS with its surface, increasing the absorption profile of TiO2, which enables the use of visible light, inactivating the bacteria more efficiently than the corresponding PS immobilized on chitosan.

Daylight Bactericidal Titania Textiles: A Contribution to Nosocomial Infections Control

: Daylight bactericidal cotton (100% cotton) textiles are presented and proposed for future hospital use. Amorphous titania (a-TiO2) and amorphous titania/chitosan complexes (a-TiO2//CS) were the selected bactericidal agents. Nanoparticles (NPs) and films were the two paths designed. Cotton textiles were impregnated with a-TiO2-based NPs or coated with a-TiO2 films. Industrial impregnation/coating will be implemented during the textile finishing treatments. A novel (room temperature and base-catalyzed), green (hydrothermal water as a catalyst), time-saving, and easy scale-up sol-gel process was established to produce the a-TiO2-based NPs. Amorphous-TiO2 films were produced by a dip-in (acid catalyzed) sol-gel solution. The daylight bactericidal performance (without the need of an external ultraviolet light source) of a-TiO2 NPs, films, and impregnated/coated textiles was proven according to AATCC 100 and ASTM E2149, using Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC®6538TM) as the bacterial indicator strain. A bacterial reduction of 99.97% was achieved for the a-TiO2 films and of 99.97% for the a-TiO2/CS NPs. Regarding the impregnated textiles, a bacterial reduction of 91.66% was achieved with a-TiO2/CS NPs, and 99.97% for cotton textiles coated with an a-TiO2 film.

Two-Stage Osseointegrated Reconstruction of Post-traumatic Unilateral Transfemoral Amputees

A new technique called osseointegration was introduced recently by intimately connecting the artificial limb prosthesis to the residual bone, eliminating the problematic socket-residuum interface. The objective here is to describe the two-stage strategy for the osseointegrated reconstruction of amputated limbs and discuss the clinical outcomes of the procedure. This is a prospective case series of 37 post-traumatic unilateral transfemoral amputees with a minimum 2-yr follow-up. Outcome measures included the Questionnaire for persons with a Transfemoral Amputation (Q-TFA), the Short Form Health Survey 36 (SF-36), the 6 Minute Walk Test (6MWT), and Timed Up and Go (TUG) tests. Adverse events including infection, revision surgery, fractures, and implant failures were reported. Clinical outcomes for all outcome measures were significantly improved at follow-up. Twelve participants were wheelchair bound pre-operatively; however, all 12 were able to ambulate after osseointegrated reconstruction. Sixteen patients experienced infection episodes but were managed successfully without the need for implant removal. One periprosthetic fracture occurred due to increased activity, which was revised successfully. These results confirm that the procedure is a suitable alternative for post-traumatic unilateral transfemoral amputees experiencing socket-related discomfort, with the potential to reduce recovery time compared with other treatment protocols.

Subchronic and chronic toxicity evaluation of inorganic nanoparticles for delivery applications

Inorganic nanoparticles provide the opportunity to localize bioactive agents to the target sites and protect them from degradation. In many cases, acute toxicities of inorganic nanoparticles used for delivery applications have been investigated. However, little information is available regarding the long-term toxicity of such materials. This review focuses on the importance of subchronic and chronic toxicity assessment of inorganic nanoparticles investigated for delivery applications. We have attempted to provide a comprehensive review of the available literature for chronic toxicity assessment of inorganic nanoparticles. Where possible correlations are made between particle composition, physiochemical properties, duration, frequency and route of administration, as well as the sex of animals, with tissue and blood toxicity, immunotoxicity and genotoxicity. A critical gap analysis is provided and important factors that need to be considered for long-term toxicology of inorganic nanoparticles are discussed.

A Precautionary Approach to Guide the Use of Transition Metal-Based Nanotechnology to Prevent Orthopedic Infections

The increase of multidrug-resistant bacteria remains a global concern. Among the proposed strategies, the use of nanoparticles (NPs) alone or associated with orthopedic implants represents a promising solution. NPs are well-known for their antimicrobial effects, induced by their size, shape, charge, concentration and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. However, this non-specific cytotoxic potential is a powerful weapon effective against almost all microorganisms, but also against eukaryotic cells, raising concerns related to their safe use. Among the analyzed transition metals, silver is the most investigated element due to its antimicrobial properties per se or as NPs; however, its toxicity raises questions about its biosafety. Even though it has milder antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity, TiO₂ needs to be exposed to UV light to be activated, thus limiting its use conjugated to orthopedic devices. By contrast, gold has a good balance between antimicrobial activity as an NP and cytocompatibility because of its inability to generate ROS. Nevertheless, although the toxicity and persistence of NPs within filter organs are not well verified, nowadays, several basic research on NP development and potential uses as antimicrobial weapons is reported, overemphasizing NPs potentialities, but without any existing potential of translation in clinics. This analysis cautions readers with respect to regulation in advancing the development and use of NPs. Hopefully, future works in vivo and clinical trials will support and regulate the use of nano-coatings to guarantee safer use of this promising approach against antibiotic-resistant microorganisms.
