Abstract
INTRODUCTION Different influences of ovarian hormones in schizophrenia (SCZ) have been reported, but no study to date has assessed their effects on the brain dynamics at rest. The present study aimed to examine the hormonal and clinical changes related to the menstrual cycle and alterations in the resting-state functional connectivity (RS-FC) depending on cycle phase and/or hormonal fluctuations in SCZ. METHOD This study was conducted based on both between- and within-subject experimental designs, including 13 clinically stable female patients with SCZ (32 ± 7.7 years) and 13 healthy women (30 ± 7.3 years). RS-functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanning, as well as hormonal and clinical assessments, was applied to each participant twice during two cycle phases: early follicular and mid-luteal. RESULTS A difference in mid-luteal progesterone levels was found between groups, with a large effect size (Cohen's d) of 0.8 (p < 0.05). Also, the estradiol levels negatively correlated with the negative symptom severity of the patients during their mid-luteal phase. In the patients, estrogen positively correlated with the auditory network connectivity in the left amygdala during the early follicular phase. In the controls, progesterone had positive correlations with the connectivity of the posterior default mode and the left frontoparietal networks in the bilateral precuneus during the early follicular phase and had a negative correlation with the executive control network connectivity in the mid-luteal phase. CONCLUSION The present study showed hormonal differences between groups and suggested that the levels of cycle-dependent hormones might be associated with the changes in clinical symptom severity and the RS-FC in the groups. Our RS-fMRI findings warrant further investigation.

Abstract
Introduction An estimated 60%–90% of people with schizophrenia smoke, compared with 15%–24% of the general population, exacerbating the already high morbidity and mortality rates observed in this population. Aims and Methods This study aimed to assess the feasibility of using a new-generation high strength nicotine e-cigarette to modify smoking behavior in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders who smoke cigarettes. A single-arm pilot study was conducted with 40 adults with schizophrenia spectrum disorders who smoked and did not intend to reduce or quit smoking. Participants were given a 12-week supply of a JUUL e-cigarette loaded with a 5% nicotine pod. The primary outcome was smoking cessation at week 12. Additional outcomes included: smoking reduction, continuous abstinence at week 24, adoption rate, adherence to the e-cigarette, feasibility, acceptability, and subjective effects. Results Sixteen (40%) participants quit by the end of 12 weeks. For the whole sample, we observed an overall, sustained 50% reduction in smoking or smoking abstinence in 37/40 (92.5%) of participants and an overall 75% reduction in median cigarettes per day from 25 to six was observed by the end of the 12 weeks (p < .001). Conclusions A high strength nicotine e-cigarette has the potential to help people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders to quit or reduce smoking. Further research with a larger sample and a comparator group is needed. The results provide useful information and direction to augment the existing body of knowledge on smoking cessation for people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Implications Considering that most people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders continue smoking, alternative and efficient interventions to reduce or prevent morbidity and mortality are urgently needed. This study showed that adults who smoke and were not motivated to quit, when provided a new-generation e-cigarette with high nicotine content, demonstrated substantially decreased cigarette consumption without causing significant side effects. Although not specifically measured in this study, nicotine absorption in new-generation devices has been shown to be consistently superior compared with the first generation of e-cigarette devices, and this may help explain the lower quit rates in studies using earlier generation devices.

Abstract
Smoking prevalence remains high among people with a mental health condition compared to those without. Understanding people's motivation to quit and their views of smoking cessation support may help to develop future interventions. We conducted a qualitative study to explore the perceptions of 30 people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders who were current smokers, about smoking traditional cigarettes, the appeal of licensed medicines and e-cigarettes for smoking cessation or smoking reduction. The experiences of participants who were motivated to quit were compared with those who were not motivated to quit. Findings suggest traditional cigarettes were pleasurable and licensed cessation aids and e-cigarettes unappealing to participants who were unmotivated to quit. Whereas nicotine replacement products and e-cigarettes may be an appealing smoking cessation or reduction strategy for those motivated to quit. There is a need to find ways of making traditional cigarettes less appealing and alternative less harmful nicotine products (licensed and unlicensed) more appealing and accessible to this group of high risk smokers.

Abstract
This narrative review focuses on the topic of tobacco smoking amongst people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. We searched PubMed, PsycInfo and Scopus databases for schizophrenia spectrum disorders and smoking and included articles about the epidemiology of tobacco smoking in people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders, examining the relationship between smoking and mental health. This narrative review describes that a higher prevalence, frequency and impact of both high nicotine dependence and its harmful effects in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders compared with those in the general population. Despite several existent theories, the reasons for high smoking rates, the high dependence on nicotine and severity of nicotine withdrawal symptoms are not fully understood. The main aim of this paper is to inform mental health personnel and particularly clinical and health psychologists about the impact and role of tobacco smoking for smokers with schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

Abstract
Schizophrenia is a disabling illness that is typically first diagnosed during late adolescence to early adulthood. It has an unremitting course and is often treatment-resistant. Many clinical aspects of the illness suggest that sex steroid-nervous system interactions may contribute to the onset, course of symptoms and the cognitive impairment displayed by men and women with schizophrenia. Here, we discuss the actions of oestrogen and testosterone on the brain during adolescent development and in schizophrenia from the perspective of experimental studies in animals, human post-mortem studies, magnetic resonance imaging studies in living humans and clinical trials of sex steroid-based treatments. We present evidence of potential beneficial, as well as detrimental, effects of both testosterone and oestrogen. We provide a rationale for the necessity to further elucidate sex steroid mechanisms of action at different ages, sexes and brain regions to more fully understand the role of testosterone and oestrogen in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. The weight of the evidence suggests that sex steroid hormones influence mammalian brain function, including both cognition and emotion, and that pharmaceutical agents aimed at sex steroid receptors appear to provide a novel treatment avenue to reduce symptoms and improve cognition in men and women with schizophrenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Schizophrenia has been defined as a dysconnection syndrome characterized by aberrant functional brain connectivity. Using task-based fMRI, we assessed to what extent the nature of the cognitive context may further modulate abnormal functional brain connectivity. METHODS We analyzed data matched for motion in patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls who performed 3 different tasks. Tasks 1 and 2 both involved emotional processing and only slighlty differed (incidental encoding v. memory recognition), whereas task 3 was a much different mental rotation task. We conducted a connectome-wide general linear model analysis aimed at identifying context-dependent and independent functional brain connectivity alterations in patients with schizophrenia. RESULTS After matching for motion, we included 30 patients with schizophrenia and 30 healthy controls in our study. Abnormal connectivity in patients with schizophrenia followed similar patterns regardless of the degree of similarity between cognitive tasks. Decreased connectivity was most notable in the medial prefrontal cortex, the anterior and posterior cingulate, the temporal lobe, the lobule IX of the cerebellum and the premotor cortex. LIMITATIONS A more circumscribed yet significant context-dependent effect might be detected with larger sample sizes or cognitive domains other than emotional and visuomotor processing. CONCLUSION The context-independence of functional brain dysconnectivity in patients with schizophrenia provides a good justification for pooling data from multiple experiments in order to identify connectivity biomarkers of this mental illness.

Abstract
AIM Recent studies have shown that sex hormones play a role in the development of schizophrenia and the severity of disease symptoms. However, study results have been inconsistent. This study compares the relationship between severity of disease symptoms and levels of estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA-S, prolactin and cortisol in male schizophrenia patients and a matched group of healthy controls. METHODS The study sample included 38 men diagnosed with schizophrenia according to DSM-IV TR criteria, and matched by age with 38 healthy controls. All subjects were between 18 and 55years old, 22 of them had been treated with olanzapine and 16 with quetiapine. Their symptom severity was evaluated by administering the Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms (SAPS) and Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS). Hormone levels for schizophrenia patients and healthy controls were evaluated using a chemiluminescence immunoassay method. The hormone profiles of schizophrenia patients and healthy controls were compared statistically. We examined the relationship between subjects' and controls' hormone levels and their scores on the SANS and SAPS scales. RESULTS This study found statistically significant elevated levels of serum DHEA-S, cortisol, and prolactin (p=0.012, p=0.009, and p=0.021 respectively), in schizophrenia patients as compared to a control group. Subjects' serum estradiol and progesterone levels (p=0.005 and p<0.001 respectively), were significantly lower than controls' levels. There was a positive correlation between subjects' SANS scores, estradiol (p=0.001) and progesterone levels (p=0.027). No relationship was found between subjects' hormone levels and their SAPS scores. CONCLUSION There may be a relationship between progesterone, estradiol, cortisol and DHEA-S, and the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. These hormones can be used as biological markers for the disorder of schizophrenia. More studies with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
The early conceptualizations of schizophrenia have noted some sex/gender differences in epidemiology and clinical expression of the disorder. Over the past few decades, the interest in differences between male and female patients has expanded to encompass brain morphology and neurocognitive function. Despite some variability and methodological shortcomings, a few patterns emerge from the available literature. Most studies of gross neuroanatomy show more enlarged ventricles and smaller frontal lobes in men than in women with schizophrenia; finding reflecting normal sexual dimorphism. In comparison, studies of brain asymmetry and specific corticolimbic structures, suggest a disturbance in normal sexual dimorphism. The neurocognitive findings are somewhat consistent with this picture. Studies of cognitive functions mediated by the lateral frontal network tend to show sex differences in patients which are in the same direction as those observed in the general population, whereas studies of processes mediated by the corticolimbic system more frequently reveal reversal of normal sexual dimorphisms. These trends are faint and future research would need to delineate neurocognitive differences between men and women with various subtypes of schizophrenia (e.g., early versus late onset), while taking into consideration hormonal status and gender of tested participants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a well-established neurotrophin that plays a role in the pathophysiology of numerous psychiatric disorders. Many studies have investigated the serum BDNF levels in patients with schizophrenia. However, there are restricted data in the literature that compare the serum BDNF levels in patients with deficit and nondeficit syndromes. In this study, we aimed to compare the serum BDNF levels between schizophrenic patients with deficit or nondeficit syndrome and healthy controls. METHODS After fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 58 patients with schizophrenia and 36 healthy controls were included in the study. The patients were grouped as deficit syndrome (N=23) and nondeficit syndrome (N=35) according to the Schedule for the Deficit Syndrome. Three groups were compared in terms of the sociodemographic and clinical variants and serum BDNF levels. RESULTS The groups were similar in terms of age, sex, body mass index, and smoking status. The serum BDNF levels in patients with deficit syndrome were significantly lower than those in healthy controls. In contrast, the serum BDNF levels in patients with nondeficit syndrome were similar to those in healthy controls. CONCLUSION This study suggests that decreased BDNF levels may play a role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenic patients with deficit syndrome. Nonetheless, additional studies using a larger patient sample size are needed to investigate the serum BDNF levels in schizophrenic patients with deficit syndrome.

While overall more men than women smoke cigarettes, women and girls take less time to become dependent after initial use and have more difficulties quitting the habit. One of the factors contributing to these differences may be that women crave cigarettes more than men and that their desire to smoke is influenced by hormonal fluctuations across the menstrual cycle. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was twofold: (a) to examine potential sex/gender differences in functional neuroanatomy of craving and to (b) delineate neural correlates of cigarette cravings in women across their menstrual cycle. Fifteen tobacco-smoking men and 19 women underwent a functional MRI during presentation of neutral and smoking-related images, known to elicit craving. Women were tested twice: once during early follicular phase and once during midluteal phase of their menstrual cycle. The analysis did not reveal any significant sex differences in the cerebral activations associated with craving. Nevertheless, the pattern of activations in women varied across their menstrual cycle with significant activations in parts of the frontal, temporal, and parietal lobe, during follicular phase, and only limited activations in the right hippocampus during the luteal phase.
